[Q] Downgrading from official 4.1.2? - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, just today I received the official update to Android 4.1.2, and thinking it might actually be a good thing I updated it (oh silly me).
So, update went ok and... I absolutely HATED it.
Is there any way I can go back to my previous Android version? Which I believe was either 4.0.3 or 4.0.4.
Any help would be appreciated.

Whats wrong with 4.1.2 ?

Indeed, what could be so bad?
I wouldn't know where to start. The Lock Screen now has new icons for sound/vibrate and a new horrible distorted font for the time. Which is, you know, allright, I can get past that. Right on my Home Screen they changed several widgets - to worse - like the google search toolbar and the calendar, the ones I use the most. The calendar no longer has the option to display a tiny calendar instead of displaying my next events.
What else can I say? The interface in general has gotten a lot worse - and I don't just say this as a spoiled consumer but as a programmer. Lots of new icons are now much much uglier than before, and some almost seem like they were from a previous version instead of a new upgraded one (like the On/Off swich). Some applications are so bad I'm embarassed FOR them, like the new People application. It used to be pretty, dark background, contacts' pictures displayed nicely, etc... now its a white and baby-blue almost "metro" style app, contacts' pictures distorted... so disapointing. Looks like something someone did it as their fisrt android application and Google by mistake put it here.
Some new stuff that I didn't care about - new app for managing Files, but I already had QuickOffice, so it's just a waste of space.
When you slide the notification bar it now dims the screen progressively - also didn't care for that, I kinda liked the way it used to be.
The new Galery IMHO is SO much worse than the other one. I liked having the little bar in the bottom of the screen to fast foward through the pictures, now I don't have it anymore.
After all of this I have avoided using my phone at all. But the one thing I can not get past is the new keyboard. I have absolutely NO idea how this one is so ****ty. I used to type everything so fast and it would autocorrect me (and correct to the right words) and the prediction system was awesome too. Now I just get autocorrected into some weird acronyms that have NO meaning at least in the language I'm using them, like BWM, TR, etc etc... So I have to type every word like 3 times until I can finally get it right.

Well, maybe it is...
People who don't have it already should upgrade with caution...

I want to downgrade too, I'm on Vodafone France 4.1.2, and I need to return to 4.0.4 Telcel Mexico, for warranty purposes, my phone speakers are useless now and I need a exchange or a new phone.

Having just come from the JB is out thread and the grumbling there I can't help but think you might be right. I have Jellybean on a Nexus 7 and aren't very excited about what it might bring to my Razr i? I'm on GB retail and may stick with ICS - more so as doubt there would be any backtracking? Not like ICS is bad anyway on the razr i. Only lag I get is with the circles widget, which I quite like. Use Nova and the lag disappears, as does the circles widget

Really? I do use the Circles widgets (also one of my favorites) and I haveno lag at all (now on JB and before on ICS).
Although I have noticed the battery is not lasting quite as much as it used to. Might update that list on why I hate JB.

hey simbad im from mexico too. in my case i killed my razr i going to ics telcel. i tooked it to telcel center. but i will be charged some money cause of the bootloader unlocked. but this monday will be shipped back to me. right now theres no way to go back to ics from jb so i guess we have to wait a little til some one knows how. good luck with ur i.

i'm at jelly bean retail brazil now, but every time i try to downgrade to ICS I had soft bricks because i'm only flashing recovery and system via fastboot, but im getting stuck at the bootloader unlocked sign... ideas? I think that the motobp and boot images are responsible of the hardbrick, maybe?

Is it lag - what happens is I either unlock the phone or during use I drop back to desktop and the desktop takes a second or two to rebuild. I have the circles widget, rain alarm pro and UK weather widget running out first page. Not a deal breaker though.

[Q] Touchscreen Lag IncS

Hey folks,
I'm experiencing with my IS, as mentioned in the title, an input lag of the touchscreen. It is not really disturbing, but the fact, that my friends Wildfire recognizes the input better, with Stock 2.1 ROM installed, bothers me really
In the moment I'm S-off on Android Revolution HD 1.1.2, which has a slightly better input than stock 2.3.3, but it is still there. Please tell me, if you are experiencing similar problems.
thanks Max
Only thing I've noticed so far is that if you drag slowly In some applications (like the browser, doesn't matter which browser I'm using) it doesn't scroll at all... but in the settings menu I can swipe downwards as slow as I want to, so I guess what I'm experiencing is software related...
What I really want to know is if I'm alone, or if there has noticed the same thing
Sent from a dumb phone
with my IcS... ive noticed that certain parts of my screen at the randomest times will stop recognizing input.... for me this happens exactly at the O and N key... after leaving it for a few seconds... it starts working again so not much of an issue to me...
there is an app in market place called touchscreen booster... maybe apply that and see if that helps u change the sensitivity...

thanks for the advice danial.aw. I tried your method, but the only touchscreen booster app i found in the market was for SGS, so that hadn't had any effect
Keeps annoying me buying a 500$ phone that has such a crappy touchscreen...
Sounds to me like you might have a faulty unit if it's bad with both stock and custom ROMs. Never had any issue with mine.

Not a clue I'm afraid. Always worth asking them I suppose.
well yes it says thats its for SGS only... but the app worked on my Atrix when i had it... so im assuming it might actually help more phones than that... try it out and see...
Doesn't make any difference no matter what i set in the app. I will drive to a store today to see if it might be subjective but I don't think so.
Edit: well it's not only subjective, I'll give the warranty a try, lets see how the will react
wooh got all of my money back, I'm moving to WP7 now. Android hasnt persuaded me...maybe again when 4.0 comes out.

God WP7 is woeful, the mango update had better fix/add a lot of features...
No I've tested the one from my sister for already two months and I'm very content with WP7. A Phone should be fast and I'm not really into Apple's politics.
You will be in microsofts politics though. WP7 is as closed down as ios. At least with apple you get a good warranty service.

ICS installed - observations and a couple questions

All,
I was able to update my locked/stock Vivid to ICS using the RUU. Everything went well after locating the appropriate Windows 7 drivers. After using it for a couple of days, here's some random thoughts and questions:
In Gingerbread I was able to download an HTC battery widget from the HTC Hub. I can't find it now in the updated (ICS) version of the HTC hub. Am I just missing it? Not a big deal since I have Beautiful Widgets installed, but the HTC version matches the overall Sense theme better.
When using static wallpaper swiping between home screens does not cause the wallpaper to scroll. I thought it did this in GB, but I might be mistaken. Is there a setting somewhere for this?
Rearranging the lock screen shortcuts isn't intuitive. After a bit of trial and error I had the light bulb moment and realized that they are using the shortcuts on the launcher for the home screen shortcuts as well.
Speed! This ROM is fast, even for an arguably bloated stock offering.
Sense 3.6 is a bit of a disappointment after seeing the clean look of the Sense 4.0 screenshots. It strikes me as odd for them to offer (and then have to support) this interim version. The hardware is capable of 4.0 (speculation on my part) so this leads me to believe HTC/AT&T just want to differentiate between the One series and not cannibalize sales.
I'm loving the new home screen folders. Much more polished looking than Gingerbread
Bluetooth is performing better under ICS than GB. My wife noted that the call quality when paired to my Pioneer AVIC Z110BT car head unit was slightly better now. Less echo, but still not great. Likely a head unit problem more than the phone - the AVIC units are notoriously bad for BT performance.
Overall a very positive upgrade! I must admit I was shocked that AT&T would get this update out so quickly. I figured they'd drag their feet until after the launch of the One series if not longer.
-Brett.
I agree with you about it being a positive upgrade but I wouldn't exactly say AT&T got it out, I think credit for that goes to PirateGhost. AT&T from what I understand has only sent it to one person that we know of. I wonder what will happen when AT&T actually does try to push the upgrade in my area?
When I run the "AT&T Software Update" from settings, I get an error message, "Server Unavailable." So, AT&T is not yet putting out the ICS update, at least not in my area. IF and when they begin, it probably will take some time to get it out to all users.
I suspect the version currently in the wild was released for a little field testing to see what happens.
The AT&T update told me that my software was up to date right before I flashed ICS, so the update definitely isn't out in my area yet. When I got my phone on 2/25 the guy at the store told me an update was coming in 'a few months.'

To answer one of your questions, GB does not scroll a static background (at lease the background that I am using on my phone).

Are you using an image that is wider than a single screen? For instance, I'm trying on of the ICS default background images as found here. It's wide enough to scroll through several home screens but for some reason it's not scrolling.

Could that be because I'm on holiraider?

What Sense version does holiraider have? If it's 3.5, then that might be a problem since the Stock GB Vivid only has 3.0.

That battery widget trashes battery life by polling the battery percentage all the time.
so far so good
I have been running on ics since the first night it was available and I think it is fairlly smooth and fast. Everything seems to work well but when i try to check for software it dosent do anything. But I am greatfull to Pirate and all who made it possible. I hate to see the devs going for sure. This seems to be a descent device for real and I hope we can get the dev's rolling again.

I hadn't considered that. Do you know if the holds true for the Beautiful Widgets battery widget? I would assume all battery widgets use a similar polling mechanism.
Does it make a difference if it's not on the main home screen? I would hope these widgets would be smart enough to only update when in view.
Thanks,
-Brett.

Good point. Was it ever determined if this was a test version or the final product? Any reports of anyone else getting the update OTA? The version number being 4.0.3 710RD does seem to sound different than other versions I've seen.
Thanks,
-Brett.
I went the RUU route and rerooted my phone to remove all of the bloat. To be quite honest I like it a bit more than gingerbread simply because it boots faster and manages the ram more efficiently. While the transitions between flipping through the sense pages is smooth, the touchscreen feels a bit "sluggish" compared to gingerbread. Sometimes it's downright not responsive and it takes an extra swipe to register my action. It might be an isolated event on my end but if it's not I'm just giving a heads up. Sense 3.5 runs well and it's still too soon to tell for battery life. I'll edit this post in a week after I give the rom some time to settle and get used to ICS a bit more.

I just checked and no. Now that you mention it I do remember a scrolling image but I can't remember the circumstances around it. Maybe it was a live wallpaper.
This seems to be the final test version sent to the carrier for approval. The official release is likely a couple of weeks away because it takes carriers about two weeks to sign off on it, unless they find something to change.

4x Display Question: Problem or normal behavior?

Hello guys,
I've noticed something, that to me, seems strange about the display in the 4x HD.
Usually in black backgrounds. What i see is some kind of "static", as if there were little waves moving when i focus on the black background. I can see that on some dark grey backgrounds too. Anyway, another easy way for me to see it is to open the notification bar. It's easy to see on the transparent part with a black background behind it.
Is this normal? I tried to look for those things in my old xperia arc, but i couldn't find it.
Neither did i find any topics on this.
This would be a bad thing for me, since i've just gotten a new 4x (the first one i got had those "particles' of dust in the screen). And it was really hard to make them give me a new one. Now it would be pretty much impossible.
I don't really think it's a big deal, i guess, but you know, just to be sure.
Thank You!

Its not a normal behavior, I already had that once or twice but, maybe because I don't care a lot with the phone, sometimes I seat on it... or it falls... I care but not like if it was made of glass...
Try to squeeze it gently when that happends, maybe some kind of bad contact of the display, if doesn't disappear take it to the service center (unless if you live in Poland of course...).
To the OP: that actually happened to mine once. All I did was a simple reboot and everything was back to normal. It was kinda weird.
I don't know if you experienced the same thing that i did. They don't seem to go away. They are always there. After reboot too. I'll update firmware cause i haven't done that yet. Then i'll post back.

If you're gonna change something that's already working, at least do it right, why create a whole new section about sound/notifications if it doesn't work?
Power control widget does the same and doesn't take a whole screen.. I like it when I first see it.... then after 2 weeks I saw it was useless

Please help - really wanna change my phone's OS ;(

I bought an HTC Desire 510 few months ago cause my Xperia ARC died (was the best phone I ever had).
Now I am very disappointed with the HTC 510, mainly cause of it's awful operating system bundled by google ALL OVER the place
The user interface is a one big disaster, so much annoying and unnecessary stuff... besides the annoying bloatware (parental control app? srsly?)
I really wanna root this phone and change it's OS to those similar of gingerbreed, cyanogen etc but I don't know how to do this with my current phone
and don't even know what custom operating systems are available for the model I have.
What annoys me about the user interface:
*Often lowers the earphone music volume without my permission then gives me this annoying warning that making it higher will damage my hearing - srsly?
*Screen tends to lower it's lighting and back again by itself while I use the phone
*A button at the bottom of the menu that looks like a "home logo" will open somekind of useless google page each time I drag that button up by mistake.
*Terrible and irremovable Gallery app, not to mention it displays images in uncomfortable way, it also features a slideshow which often plays automatically without me asking it to each time I enter a photo album.
*Poorly made irremovable alarm clock app
*Other forced google apps installed on my phone which i don't use and can't just get rid of
*Bad just bad option of organizing apps, well for me atleast, back on my Xperia ARC I used to organize my apps by "commonly used apps" feature, went great, here it's just wacky, it doesn't do it automatically after you set it to organize the following way. So I find myself surfing through all the useless apps to find the app I need at the app menu.
Can anyone give me guidance or recommendation for an alternative Operating System I could replace this horrific google product infecting my phone since I bought it?
I presume this phone would become amazing with a new custom OS, did anyone changed the OS on their HTC 510? if yes what you use and how is it?
Also I know to root this device you first need to unlock the bootloader, is there anything else important I need to know when rooting it?

Dude really. Maybe you should have checked out the forums of this model B4 you bought it. That being said, since you say you are unlocked and rooted then doing a quick search should get you everything you need to rid yourself of all that is bothering you. Depending on what you have and with whom there are some pretty good options out there to use. Check it out and start doing it.
Or you could just throw your phone in the lake, buy and Iphone and forget about it. Bam!

I actually planned to buy Galaxy 3, heard it was good but also had slow loading problems, then I was offered an alternative of this HTC for the same price and faster working system. It was a spontaneous buy.
And I thought buying an Iphone but changed my mind cause of the "itunes" thing.

Ok, how do I deal with the "menu" thing where I want to authomatically always to arrange my icons by last used but cant right now?
I tried themes, but those are so intrusive and full of advertising, well those I tried so far.. (if there are any good ones to recommend I'd give a try) and how about disabling the annoying requests of updates I don't even need? <--(forgot to mention this issue) And how about issues 1-3 I mentioned? any idea how i deal with those then? You talk as if it's so easy, show me then.
About the lake.. better to throw to those who came up with this terrible phone idea

All I can say (and I never said it was easy) is for you to subscribe to all of the HTC 510 Forums and start reading thru the threads. In your case, the most helpful one being this one..."Help & Troubleshooting" if you can not find answers to your particular questions then I would assume that means we just aren't there yet. This is a pretty new device after all. I wouldnt know about themes being I am on custom ROM and that is not an option. You should maybe go for the Unlock and root your phone method. Try out some of the ROMs available. I believe that will alleviate many of your issues since the stock ROM that came with these units have multiple issues. Many of them are the same ones you are experiencing. I wish you well and Read, Read, Read.
Good Luck

You should definitely read through the forums if you haven't so far. I have read/skimmed every thread here about our phone and I almost have no questions or concerns except for some ideas for a couple of issues that haven't been brought up yet or just not yet done.
I only use Sense Home or Dodol Launcher and they both don't have the option to sort by last used, check out Nova, Apex, or some other launcher.
As far as the update is concerned, you can follow this post by LarryBoyG, if you plan to stay on stock. I'm sure a custom ROM will be built that includes the update, unless everyone just wants to wait for Lollipop.
