You need CWM or TWRP recovery.
Download the "kernel.zip" to your phone.
Reboot to recovery and backup your current rom by go to "backup and restore"/"backup to external sd".
(If you want to go back to stock kernel you can restore boot.img by choose advanced restore and choose that boot.img in your backup.)
When backup is done, go back in menu and choose "install .zip from sd card", and then "choose zip from sdcard" or "choose zip from external sdcard" Depends on where you saved the "kernel.zip". Browse to that .zip and confirm with yes.
DONE!
Reboot phone.

For those of you having trouble with the market on the 0.6.8 by Brian here is the newb step by step. Mine works great. These are Brian's instructions with my additions. Very simple and has worked on all 3 of my Nooks. Flawlessly!!!
Instructions:
Download the zip file
Unzip the image file
Burn the image to sdcard
Shutoff your nook and insert the sdcard you just created
Boot your nook to sdcard
Under the "mounts and storage" menu, choose "format cache"
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "install zip from sdcard"
Choose "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose the zip file
After the image is installed, remove the sdcard
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "reboot system now"
Go into applications
Manage applications
Chose market
Clear cache not data
Now reboot with the 3.0.0.5 Version of clockwork
Choose mount
Reformat cache
Reboot again
After the nook has reboot
Configure the wireless, setup your google account
The market will now work
Install Flash and YouTube
BTW Brian FTW Great work, I like your setup the best
I found some similar threads but I'm a total noob with all of this. I'm hoping someone could help me out here using laymen terms (not even really sure what you guys mean when you say to "flash the zip").
I used autonooter 3.0 awhile back without knowing that clockwork recovery was also included with it. I wanted to restore back to stock and just have it back to factory settings. I foolishly tried to reboot 8 times thinking that it would revert back to factory settings, however now it gets stuck in the ClockworkMod Recovery v.3.0.0.5 everytime I boot up the nook. I saw one of the threads mention to use CWR removal zip, so I placed that on my sdcard, inserted it into my nook and tried to "install zip from sdcard" from CWR, but it keeps saying "Can't mount /sdcard/update.zip". I'm at the point where I'm completely stuck and frustrated as I can't use my nook and having trouble deciphering some of the threads here. Could someone please help with a walkthrough? Thank you so much!
Flash the zip refers to the option available on CWR (or using ADB, but nevermind that for now). You use the sound keys to go up and down, the N for enter and the power for back (if memory serves me correctly).
Also in CWR you have different options to format /data /system /cache and a bit more.
All you need is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
You can start by doing only part 2, which is to put the zip file in a uSD (root is fine, as you have to navigate to it), boot up your nook, flash that zip, and format chache partition and dalvik cache (have a look on the options of each menu in CWR). Then do the 8 times and see if it works. If not, move to doing part 1 also.
Also, read this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943956
and use the search feature of the forums. Keep reading, everything will start to make sense soon!
Thanks so much for your help. I tried adding the zip file to my sdcard, but trying to install that part is where I'm getting stuck. I'm selecting "install zip from sdcard, choose zip from sdcard" from CWM, but it keeps saying that it "failed to mount /sdcard, can't mount sdcard". I assumed that I needed to go to mounts and storage and select "mount /sdcard" but it just gives me an error mounting sdcard message. Same with selecting "format sdcard". Any other suggestions?
Unless you got the AN 3.0 image from a source other than the original thread in this forum, clockworks recovery was not installed from using AN 3.0. You, or someone else, had to go into the “ROM Manager” app and manually select to install it.
To fix the problem, go HERE and make yourself a bootable ClockworkMod SD card. Once you have made the card, put the CWM remover zip on the SD card. Turn off your NC, and then boot the device with the bootable CWM card. Then you need to install the CWM remover zip.
This worked like a charm. Thank you GM and Gun! Totally made my day.
Hello
I have a simple question, now i am on JVU (ODEX) with value pack, semaphore 2.5.0, ext4 and some various mods. What is the flashing procedure...copy to sdcard than wipe cache, dalvic cache, factory reset...than install from sdcad??? Please give me som instructions. I'm new in subject. I LOVE your ROM, and i think it's PERFECT!!!
Hi,first make a backup, download the zip.
Copy the zip file in the internal SD (SD internal phone, not the removable SD card).
Restart the phone in recovery mode CWM.
disable ext4
Select "install from sdcard zip."
Select "choose zip sdcard".
Locate and select the downloaded zip file.
Then restart the phone.
Ok. But can i flash it with my ROM??? It is not an issue??? Thx for quick respond There will be no problem that i am on ODEX??
No, no problem
but do not forget to do the backup
if you did not Titanium Backup installs to save your apps (before flashing)
take the version no wipe
If this is your first flash ... take a maximum of precautions
THX. And that is not my first flash. But first on rom without ODIN.(CMW)
With pleasure, good flash
Hi.
I have a Samsung Captivate SGH I897 and a few months ago I tried to install some custom rom dowloaded from xdadev... but I don't know what I did wrong and brick my phone. So I did some unbrick procedure and make it work again.
I have the 2.1 Android and for some reason I can't install any ROM. I think the biggest problem I have is that I can't even install the clockword mod recovery, I tried to download the app from the market and it says is unaviable for my android version.
I think I'm very stuck here.
Please help.
Thanks

I did all the procedure... but when I am in the recovery mode menu, I can't select the ROM, I select select from SD card and it only shows the folders of the internal SD card (not the removable). Stuck again.

I can't find the external SD, only the internal and has no ROMs, and the problem is that I'm stocked in the recovery mode and I don't know a way yo access to the internal SD in recovery mode.
Thank you
Select "Install zip from sdcard" , then "choose zip from sdcard" and u should see ur Rom there.
---------- Post added at 07:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:22 PM ----------
If not there...then go to "Mounts and storage", then "Mount USB storage", then connect ur phone to ur pc and copy the Rom to that. Then "Unmount". Then go back to "Install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard" and select ur Rom and "Yes-Install"

Well, I did that and it works, now I'm running an 4.0.4 custom ROM and works great.
Thank you !!
Hey guys, first of all, just let me say, thanks for reading.
Here is the thing, I got my note a while back and rooted and installed CM 10 at the time, then I just kept using its update feature to keep up to date. I did that almost a year ago and never came back to XDA Devs. So im pretty rusty on procedures and that kind of stuff.
I was looking into installing a new ROM, one that has the S-Note, S-Memo and S-Pen drawing apps, and If I'm not mistaken, this one does:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1970626
I know how to install a new ROM, but when I reboot my phone I cant access CWM recovery to install from SD card.
So my question is: What would I need to do, to get back CWM so I can install the previously mentioned ROM, if I'm running the latest nightly of CM?
Thank you in advance for your time!
Sounds like you need to do a full wipe and flash a ROM with a kernel that has cwm. Via a computer
You can flash the hydracore kernel via PC ODIN or mobile ODIN should also work. Better do a full wipe and flash with PC ODIN.
Thanks guys!
Would asking for a link to the relevant and recommended tutorials be too much?
Help Installing New ROM
Hey guys, first of all, just let me say, thanks for reading.
I am a noob wanting to install custom rom my Galaxy Note N 7000
Android version : 4.0.4
Baseband version : N7000XXLRK
Kernal version : 3.0.15 - N7000XXLRK-CL811902
I was earlier planning to factory reset my Note and then install the latest firmware by Samsung from Kies
So I hard reset my Galaxy Note.
But I had some trouble downloading the update using Kies, that's when I decided to install custom ROM.
So the following are the details I have collected over my research on how to install Custom ROM on my Galaxy Note.
I am posting this thread because I want to check, if I have gathered the right information over my search
Please reply with the steps I have to remove or steps I have to add.
1. Have to root my phone and install a Safe Kernel.
Charge the battery to 100%
Then put my Phone in Debugging Mode
I have checked this thread [Beginners Guide]How to root Samsung Galaxy Note for rooting details and found 3 links for my kernel on the thread
[03.06.2013][PhilZ-cwm6][n7000] v5.06.1 Safe Stock Kernel+CWM6+Root+exFAT+ext4-LT6
http://d-h.st/SZ2 - Filename: PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-3.1
http://d-h.st/NFY - Filename: PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-2.7
http://d-h.st/b5M - Filename: PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-2.5
I guess PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-3.1 is the latest kernel for my phone from the version details.
Please confirm if I was right in choosing the kernel.
- Copy downloaded file to Ext SD card to root directory
- Reboot into recovery (vol up+Home+power)
- Select install(update) zip from ext SD card
- Select PhilZ-cwm6-XXLRK-XEU-3.1-signed.zip' which I copied to Ext card
- Reboot device
Questions???
---> Does root directory mean I have to copy the files to external SD card when its just open?
---> How can I check if my phone is successfully rooted?
2. Backup my Phone’s IMEI
-Install Root Browser from google store
-Copy efs folder to external SD Card storage and then to my computer
3. Backup the Complete ROM
- Reboot into recovery (vol up+Home+power)
- Scroll down to the “backup and restore” option and backup the ROM to external storage using the option “backup to external sdcard” option.
Question???
---> Can I save this backup to my computer so that I can delete the back up and save space on the external SD?
4. Installing Custom ROM
I am planning to install [AOSPA 4.2.2] PARANOIDANDROID 3.60 (June 11)
- Download the latest ROM pa_n7000-3.60-11JUN2013-053741.zip using the link
- Download the latest Gapps pa_gapps-full-4.2-20130615-signed.zip from the link
- Copy ROM and Gapps to Internal SD card
- Reboot into recovery (vol up+Home+power)
- Select "wipe data/factory reset"
- Select "wipe cache partition"
- Go to advanced and select “wipe dalvik cache” and “wipe battery stats”
- Go to mounts and storage and ”format system”
- Return back to the main menu and select “install zip" and choose zip from Internal sd card” and select the ROM
- Return back to the main menu and select “install zip" and choose zip from Internal sd card” and select the Gapps
- Select "wipe cache partition"
- Go to advanced and select “wipe dalvik cache”
- Finally, go back to the main menu in Recovery and select ”reboot system now”.
Questions???
---> Doesn't wiping all the data remove the ROM and Gapps we have copied to the Internal SD card?
---> Is it really the Internal SD card where I have to copy ROM and Gapps?
---> Do I really have to wipe cache after installing ROM and Gapps?
---> After I successfully install the custom ROM how will I receive the future updates?
Thanks in advance
Hey mate, lotta questions you got there!
Firstly, you copy the PhilZ kernel .zip to your SD card and then go to recovery and flash it. You go to recovery, you'll have an option, flash .zip from SD card.
To check the root, you'll have superuser in your app drawer after you restart.
The backup you're talking about here is the nandroid backup, yes you can copy the folder to the PC later.
And when you wipe data, you don't lose your documents on the internal SD, the ROM and gapps will be still there, and you can copy the ROM and gapps .zip files to SD card too.
Yes wiping cache before flashing tje ROM is advisable. And once you root the phone, you won't get access to future updates by samsung officially, but you'll have the stock based custom ROMs on xda which solves that problem, else you can flash the official firmware anytime and update.
Hit thanks if this helped, guess it did
