The DROID 4 may be the next in line to receive Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) from Motorola, if invites to a soak test for members of the Moto Feedback Network are any indication. A number of readers of ours received invites last night to test out a “early preview of a new software release,” though the words “Jelly Bean” were not necessarily mentioned in the emails.
With that said, a newish thread at Motorola’s support forums is reminding DROID 4 owners that they should be sure their accounts have correct IMEI numbers attached because Jelly Bean is indeed on the way. More members there are also chiming in with soak test invites.
Motorola has yet to define a time frame for the DROID 4 update, but we know for sure that it is expected to receive Jelly Bean. That much they have confirmed. Should it push out some time this month (Q1), they may actually be somewhat ahead of anyone’s schedule.
Nice.. soon soon my preciousssss lol

So if I have safestrap installed, do I need to remove it before the OTA can install?
Yes. Be on your stock system, uninstall safestrap, and make sure you have all your system apps still installed to pass the OTA requirements. If you do get an OTA please share it with the community before installing. Thanks!

Verizon has approved the update and has it on their web page...

No word though of when the SOAK will be pushed but I expect any day now with the official OTA a day later

Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
A downloaded OTA is stored in the device's cache. If you're rooted, use a file explorer and navigate to "/cache" and you should find the zip there.
Alternately, the app provided here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188158
Will transfer the zip from the cache to your sd card. Just copy it to your pc and throw it up on a file hosting service.
Just be sure to nab it before you install it.

Second emails went out to SOAK invitee's stating that the update (SOAK) would start being pushed out today (3/19).
Hopefully we'll see it soon....
I just put mine back to stock with a new 4G sim card and bypassed activation (as I don't have Verizon) doing a full NVDump before the OTA for comparison (to see the supposed GSM Improvements, also to eliminate variables in our efforts to get this and the RAZR working on US GSM). Rooted, Updated Binaries, Installed VooDoo, Protected Root, Temp Unroot, Hurry up and wait.......
Push out has started......

So, I am fearless.. Where can we get the update?
Have they actually gotten the update with a stock Bionic or did they find it online and decide to install it?
As far as I've seen, the current leaked OTA is 5.5.893....5.5.892 was being tested by the Motorola Field Testers and today a small update to 5.5.893 was released so I assume the Motorola Field Testers are now testing 5.5.893.
I wouldn't install anything till we at least have confirmation that it is the actual OTA...otherwise you might not be able to get future updates.

Soak tests are kind of a test phase for updates that may (or may not, depending on bug reports) be sent out OTA for everyone else. A few (hundred) people sign up to get the pre-release, and report bugs if any. If very few, or no bugs are reported, the software update is pushed to all users of the device.
My tab's Flyer than yours (unless this is posted in a Flyer thread... Then it's just as Flyer...)

Soak tests are pre release tests of future official software updates.

Soak tests often end up being the final release that goes out over the air, so I like to think of them as release candidate testing.
The current update soak is limited to specific IMEI numbers for people who signed up and were selected to test and provide feedback to Motorola.
Is it still possible to sign up to be a tester? I somehow got into the samsung dev channel when I was researching phones but that doesn't do me any good now...
Also I would bet we see Jellybean before most other phones, but as it's focused more twards tablets it might be a while. Still nice to see updates coming via the soaks though so maybe they are more on the ball than most so maybe this year. But then again AT&T has to have their hand in it too...
I'm sure well get JB. Problem is I'm sure we wouldn't see it for at least a year or so....
I'm for one hoping you guys get jellybean but wouldn't hold your breath with anything Motorola says after what they did to us og Atrix users. Just wrong.

From what I am hearing, the OG Atrix has issues with the specific NVidia chipset. NVidia is not providing ICS compatible drivers. (hence when there are issues with ICS/JB even with the Cyanogenmod build for OG Atrix)

Updates are designed to *UPDATE* one build and one build only. If you are not on 905, your phone won't even see it on the update server, let alone install it. Rooted doesn't matter.

Our hopes are justified. Why would Moto have this many ICS builds cooking up just to scrap it all?
The Photon never even got an ICS build. Motorola said to abandon hope on it. It didn't even get a leak. However, someone found a leak for the Atrix. Who knows if that'll ever see the light of day? What's even more puzzling is that the Atrix/Photon are both Tegra2 devices.
The best and brightest Android devs have picked apart these Bionic ICS leaks and, not only are these leaks legit but they indicate a Jellybean release is being worked on too. The Bionic will get what it deserves, for once.
Motorola just announced on their Facebook page about 10-15 minutes ago that ICS for the Bionic begins rolling out today in phases.

Yeah it was rough. The data drops were horrible. Part of the way the soak test goes is that you cannot flash to stock or factory reset your phone after your phone id has been added to the recipient list of the OTA. I wasn't sure when that would happen so I went back to GB the day I got the invitation to join.
Now I know there will be a second announcement the day before the soak, after which you should not flash-to-stock or reset your phone anymore. Good to know for the next soak!

Got the OTA this morning. Phone is very sluggish. Doesn't seem to be any way to switch between 4G and 3g. My imap email is now blank and I am unable to download Chrome from the play store.
Switching from 4g/3g is a must for me as 4G causes static in my Tritton headset. I I use the native mail app for work, so basically this update was a bust.

Many people believe, since Google owns Motorola, that Motorola phone will get updates faster... Google has already stated that this is not true, they get no preferential treatment in regards to updates.
That being said, due to the limited bastardization of android on the moto x, it is fair to believe that this device has the potential to get updates quicker, whether that will play out as such, will be better known in the future.
But, the quick answer to your question is"no" this will not get updates as fast as a nexus device... Its not a nexus device. But it is understandable to believe that we will get updates more quickly than most other manufacturers devices on the market.

I will be happy if we hey an update in a reasonable amount of time... I guess that's a matter of opinion on what's a reasonable amount of time... I just traded in my HTC One XL for this phone so as long as I would get the updates faster than I did on that phone I will be happy... Also I was hoping to get support for this device for a longer period of time and keep receiving the updates... I just figured since it does not have a heavy ui like sense or touch wiz I would get updates quicker and supported longer... But I'm happy with the phone so I think I'm just going to keep it...
