ICS - Motorola Droid Bionic

Official ICS where are you????? Still Waiting u come to my lovely bionic, oooh bionic...where's your official ICS?

My opinion is that official talk about giving more consideration to Bionic owners is mostly talk. Sure ICS will roll out someday, but what about JB?

One step at a time.

We're in line after the atrix 2. That started ota today. So now anywhere from a week to three weeks and we'll get our ota. JB is being worked on already and it will be an update to the ota ics build.

I have to disagree. Moto put in a LOT of wrench time on ICS for Bionic. It's the BEST ICS build out there for any Moto phone IMO. 11 builds to get it right for us.

.247 is on QA1, QA2 and Staging SDC200 and SDC100... I think it's coming along
I'm willing to bet it is the final version.

Once it hits qa4 it's time to celebrate.

I wouldn't get your guy's hopes up too high, given what has happened with the photon/Atrix.
But with any luck since you guys are on the big red, moto will throw at least someone a bone

That situation was just stupid. Moto should perhaps be a little more careful. That's all I'm gonna say about that. Doesn't affect the Bionic in any way.

Former Bionic owner here--I just received an email from Motorola with a soak test invite for the Bionic.

Confirmed the soak test has started. About damn time.

when they say you have to be stock and not rooted, will that really fail the update? if the ICS build is later than the current ICS build you're running (.232) do I really have to go back to GB or should it update? I'm also planning on pulling the /cache incase it doesn't work 1st time

Updates are designed to *UPDATE* one build and one build only. If you are not on 905, your phone won't even see it on the update server, let alone install it. Rooted doesn't matter.

Our hopes are justified. Why would Moto have this many ICS builds cooking up just to scrap it all?
The Photon never even got an ICS build. Motorola said to abandon hope on it. It didn't even get a leak. However, someone found a leak for the Atrix. Who knows if that'll ever see the light of day? What's even more puzzling is that the Atrix/Photon are both Tegra2 devices.
The best and brightest Android devs have picked apart these Bionic ICS leaks and, not only are these leaks legit but they indicate a Jellybean release is being worked on too. The Bionic will get what it deserves, for once.

ICS Booted on the Droid 3 -- New Poll

As some of you who follow me on Twitter (@Hashcode0f) may already know, I booted up ICS today on the Droid 3.
Almost nothing works (including touch sensor for the screen), but it's progress on that front.
The question remains.. where should I spend my time?
And you the community get to make that choice.

I don't know how good ICS is.. and also depends on how long it would take to get a functional build (everyday use). If it takes 3+ months I say finish CM7 first
I'd still like to see the LED used only for notifications. The sound, camera and 3g errors are no biggie but they're nagging imperfections in an otherwise killer ROM.
What sort of advances does ICS offer over the current Android?

I say work on CM7 Hash, if Googlerola gets us an unlocked bootloader by 2012, ICS will be way easier to work on

If it were up to Motorola only, they would probably unlock the bootloader, but Verizon has the final say.
I would love to see ICS for the Droid 3, I imagine we will see a Motorola issued update sometime next year, it would be nice if they didn't use Motoblur with ICS but I'm not getting my hopes up.
I would love to have unmolested ICS on my phone. I don't like much of Blur.
Hashcode you are our Droid3-God Thanks!
I love the task-app of Blur and that everything is black on white.

I know chevycam and i'm sure other developers are waiting for a working CM version to use as a base for their own roms. Plus getting the drivers and other assorted bugs worked out now on 7 should help when CM9 comes out later.

CM7 for sure. It will make CM9 easy. Then, we can also have MIUI and other AOSP based ROMs. It might not even be possible to get ICS working completely without a new kernel. But it is definitely possible to finish CM7. It's a waste of time to work on ICS now.
Not necessarily GoogleAndroid. Remember that he would have to make everything work since the code base for ICS is a huge change from the code base for GB. I would think that would be the case unless the CM team takes care of that.

What do you think odds are that you will have ics up on the droid 3 before motorola releases it for the bionic(would be jokes but I bet odds are super good)? Would the bionic ics source speed up your port to droid 3 or make it more stable? I guess I could think of a list of questions as a noob but honestly, the main would be which makes most sense to you? That's the box I would check in the poll.

I don't reckon most Droid 3 owners give a **** about ICS on their phones, nor do they have any clue what it even is. That is a shame though, because for Android enthusiasts like us, it is a big deal, especially when we are running ICS on it already and it makes MotoBlur look like the old LG Env interface.
Most people don't root, and Verizon isn't going to promote an OS version over a new handset. I love my D3, but it's utter nonsense that it won't get official ICS just months after Google called the version the great unifier that can and will run on every phone.

I doubt that we will ever see bootloaders unlocked on our current phones. I suspect that it could not be done without sending the phones back to Motorola and having them replace the "one time" programmable firmware. Why else would having a Dev Razr be useless for unlocking other Razrs. I think the only way we would ever be able to put anything we wanted on these phones would be if Moto released their encrypted key so that the phone would accept it. FAT chance of that happening, but I bet that hasn't crossed anyone's mind at Moto. Maybe we could suggest that to them.

OK, can someone answer a possibly dumb question for me? I've spent the last year happily rooting my original Droid and running custom roms - finally settling on Cyanogen Mod. Now, I'm no expert but I've found it pretty easy to do by just following the instructions that are available many places online. I now have my Droid 3 and so far am just running it stock - waiting for CM9 to get to a release version.
So, from the discussion I'm assuming that rooting the Device and loading Cyanogen is somehow something less than "unlocking the boot loader". But if it is, does that matter? Whatever that actually means it doesn't seem to be preventing anyone from running custom ROM's - or am I missing something?

But I used to run custom kernels on my Droid 1 too. I was running CM7.1 with a Chevy#1 (think that's what it was) kernel which was what let me use Set CPU to overclock. Is that not loading a "custom kernel"? Or was the boot loader unlocked on my Droid 2?
I'm not criticizing or saying anyone else is wrong - I'm just trying to understand what the differences are between what I have been doing and having a true "unlocked boot loader". What are the things that would allow me to do that can't be done now?
droid 1 is the only true unlocked bootloader moto phone with the exception of the atrix, which was accomplished with many many hours of work.

Which will we get: JB or $100?

The most interesting part of this for me was the upgrade promise... "If your device cannot be updated because it degrades the user's experience, Motorola will give you $100 to purchase one of their newer devices"...
Which do you think we'll get?

Soak tests are kind of a test phase for updates that may (or may not, depending on bug reports) be sent out OTA for everyone else. A few (hundred) people sign up to get the pre-release, and report bugs if any. If very few, or no bugs are reported, the software update is pushed to all users of the device.
My tab's Flyer than yours (unless this is posted in a Flyer thread... Then it's just as Flyer...)

Soak tests are pre release tests of future official software updates.
Sent from my MB886 using xda premium
Soak tests often end up being the final release that goes out over the air, so I like to think of them as release candidate testing.
The current update soak is limited to specific IMEI numbers for people who signed up and were selected to test and provide feedback to Motorola.
Is it still possible to sign up to be a tester? I somehow got into the samsung dev channel when I was researching phones but that doesn't do me any good now...
Also I would bet we see Jellybean before most other phones, but as it's focused more twards tablets it might be a while. Still nice to see updates coming via the soaks though so maybe they are more on the ball than most so maybe this year. But then again AT&T has to have their hand in it too...
I'm sure well get JB. Problem is I'm sure we wouldn't see it for at least a year or so....

Yeah it was rough. The data drops were horrible. Part of the way the soak test goes is that you cannot flash to stock or factory reset your phone after your phone id has been added to the recipient list of the OTA. I wasn't sure when that would happen so I went back to GB the day I got the invitation to join.
Now I know there will be a second announcement the day before the soak, after which you should not flash-to-stock or reset your phone anymore. Good to know for the next soak!

Yeah! My phone is getting the update now. Can't wait for JB! So glad they made that announcement. One got "stuck" on 905 for about a 3 days.
Got the OTA this morning. Phone is very sluggish. Doesn't seem to be any way to switch between 4G and 3g. My imap email is now blank and I am unable to download Chrome from the play store.
Switching from 4g/3g is a must for me as 4G causes static in my Tritton headset. I I use the native mail app for work, so basically this update was a bust.
Also I had chrome on one of the earlier leaks, why can't we download it now?

Guess its one of those gotta try it to understand it thing. Coming from my last phone being the first gen droid RAZR, I've never sat back and wished my g2 had more speed.

its alot nicer for animations, snappier, the whole kitkat look to the notification bar, fine tuning under the hood, tap and pay, cloud printing. give it a go
We probably won't see an update till after the g3 and s5 are released.

I suspected qtr1 was out of the picture when the drop date of the m8 was announced. Vzw doesn't like to have anything current impede the new baby.

Yeah I said that on another site and someone said updates don't affect phone sales... when the average consumer doesn't know of updates and Verizon and OEMs market "latest android software" many people will want it.

It's so......awesome that the phone that was never displayed in a store gets the latest update. How can anyone want the g3 when LG cares little to get phones updated.
Htc obviously did something to convince VZW to update their stuff yet the g flex is rocking 4.2.2 and the same with ours.

I don't think it's LG in this instance. I think it's Verizon, and I think it has more to do with the m8 launch than it does with whether or not the update is ready. They don't like to have anything mess with the new revenue stream.

Agreed... Think about it: would the company make more money by keeping everyone's android system slick and up-to-date, or by enticing those with outdated devices to pine over the newest phone, with the NEWEST OS? Having worked customer service for a VZW contractor in the past, I personally know that making their customers happy (with no direct profit) is at the bottom of their list.

Such as? Maybe I'm ignorant and the signs are right in front of me, but I haven't seen anything that makes me excited to receive it.
I'm aware once the radio sources are dropped and they are put to work a bit then the sod and random reboot issues should be taken care of, but that's about all I've seen being said.

Not sure why everyone is all fired up about it. Not like 4.4 is much different than 4.2
They didn't even give us art.

Bluetooth LTE will be nice to have. I've been waiting for it so I can connect to my Garmin watch and do live tracking. I need at least Android 4.3 to do this. (which VZW skipped )
I can't believe Verizon still hasn't pushed 4.4 update,this is ridiculous :banghead:

I've given up hope. Its the usual state of mind one arrives at when dealing with VZW. You go though denial, anger and rage (quite a lot of rage) before reaching acceptance

You are not far off the mark. It is also possible that they are not going to update the phone to 4.4.2. Just because LG stated they would be for all variants does not mean Verizon will do it. I came from an LG revolution which at point LG said would get ICS, needless to say that phone is still only running 2.3.6. We guessed that VZW cancelled the update. LG support stated that it was working on a upgrade and that it was in testing and then nothing...
I hope I am not reliving things again. If I am, at least the base phone and stock OS are really good.

I don't think so because there's already a stock leak build that works 100 percent. I think they're just waiting and they're gonna merge the knock code in and release it as one build rather than releasing 2 separate ones
