[Q] Howto Disable OTA O/S Updates? - Motorola Droid 4

I received an invention to test the coming Jelly Bean update. I declined.
I am pretty happy with my D4 with ICS. I am rooted, have successfully removed all the bloatware, and I have everything set up just the way I like it. So, I really have no desire to start all over again, with JB.
Is there a way to disable the upcoming general VZW OTA update to JB? I still remember the constant and irritating nag popup back with the OTA update from GB to ICS. I really don't want to deal with that again.
So....
Is there a way? I have searched, but all I could find, are older methods for GB and even older versions of Android. And even then, I found contradictory methods where one person says they found such, and later, another post by someone else reporting such doesn't work permanently.
As mentioned, I am rooted. So, possibly, all I need to know what are the appropriate .apk, .odex, or .zip files to "hide".

Rename /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.apk to BlurUpdater_VZW.apk.bak. Rename /system/app/BlurUpdater_VZW.odex to
BlurUpdater_VZW.odex.bak.
reboot, wipe cache

Also FOTA.apk and odex should be frozen/removed.

Thanks for this guys.
I tried renaming system/etc/security/otacerts.zip and removing the downloaded update from the cache folder, but was still getting notified about "the update could not be properly validated"

Which app did you use to rename the files? I have no desire of updating to JB either.

Phone needs to be rooted, then use any root browser or file manager with root options.

Yea, your phone needs to be rooted.
I used the "NoBloat" app to disable the mentioned programs.
Seems to have worked well (thanks!). I haven't yet be asked to update to JB.

safe to install 1.6mb update?

Just receive notification for an update for flash player. I am running rooted 2.2 stock from rom. Manager. Does updating broke anything?
Depends on how you are rooted the flash/others update breaks some of the root methods
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
From what I have been seeing it breaks the "1 click" type roots you got from installing an app. You can get root back but until a new exploit is found you will have to do it the "hard" way (push custom recovery and then root via update.zip)
This update also enables Exchange Policies, allowing your Exchange server to be set as a Device Admin and force policies down. It is a non-event if you do not link to a corporate email system.
Thanks for the info. But is there any way to stop it poping up every other minute.?
Ok i have a droid1 and the x...this morning i received this notification in mu droid1 so i didn't install..my question is maybe is dumb question but i will ask it... is there official froyo for droid1 cause i using froyo but i install leaked version a while ago...so is there is better than the leaked one..???? Stock Apps

Not sure how but this topic keeps getting missed in the failed update mayhem. One thing seems obvious bloatware are needed for update to succeed. TB cannot restore these. Is it possible for someone to share them so we can install. Wothout flashong ising oden

Just use Odin.
Odin will delete everything though. Was hoping not to do that.

Also it seems ppl who used odin are the ones having problems updating. Does anyone have the att apk files and how can they be installed.

Look at the survey in general you have been pointed to in other posts. You don't need bloat to have a successful update. Designgears has made an update. You can get the apk's off a system dump in dev.
Please look around and read. I'm not trying to come down on you, but all the questions and concerns you have, all legitimate, have been addressed.

To root or not to root

Does anyone understand or have any more information about the DRM restrictions if you root your device.
Are the DRM restrictions built into some apps or into Android itself? It would be terrible to pay for content and then to loose access to it, because someone uses some intelligence' by rooting their device.
If I root my Nexus 7, will I be prevented from accessing the material which i've purchased.
Is there a workaround for this ?
I saw a comment from a 'rootKepper' type app which summons this up well :
"Vote with your dollars: Don't accept being a customer of companies restricting your freedom with defective and and inefficient technical measures."
Cheers
I've rooted (but still on stock) and not have come across any apps that have restricted my access of using them because I was rooted. If worse comes to worse you can just unroot your device to use the app.
What would be sweet though is if you can sorta "hide" root and then make it only visible for a specific app that you want to use that uses root access.

Cool thanks for sharing your experience. I feel motivated to give it a go.
I've never had the need to "hide" root, but I'm pretty sure that Voodoo OTA Rootkeper offers this exact functionality.

Oh neither have I but now that I am thinking about it, I remember CynogenMod having a feature once upon a time (I havent flashed a rom of theirs in a while so I dont know if they still have it) but they were able to turn root off and on in the settings I guess maybe for situations like this.
Never faced any DRM issue on any unrooted device. Both my Galaxy S3 and Nexus 7 are rooted and never faced any problem. Reason? Because this problem does not exist. I remember Google Play movies used to complain about rooted device and it does not play movie on rooted device but it has changed since version 2.09c and we are on version 2.21 now. Google has officially stopped caring about root and now they rather support the root and hacking.

I rooted just because the process requires you to wipe your device completely (even SD card data). So better do it ASAP then later and fight moving data.
Root is just admin rights with regards to the file system. Having Root access allows you to backup system files (App data) using awesome backup programs like Titanium Backup and DataSync. Having root also allows custom recoveries to be installed with apps like ClockWorkMod and Goo.IM
I think the only thing that you won't be able to do is rent movies with a rooted phone. Doesn't it block you if your rooted?
Also sharp2G, what did you use to change the screen? Trinity app?

Actually. You don't need to be rooted to backup app data anymore.
The latest SDK from Google allows you to use a backup command to backup your app data and settings as well as restore them. No root required. It will even encrypt your backup as well if you want.
I for one am glad to see Google implementing this feature. It's about time.

Just curious as to why root then? I too love stock JB but it feels so weird to me to not be rooted. I feel like stock has everything I need though. Just wondering what things you needed to be root for if your running the stock ROM. I'd be interested!

Titanium Backup, USB OTG, changing to tablet UI, etc.
Root!
Root! It has great expansion options for your tablet. When you root, try using ModaCo's ROM and see how little things change. When you are done using and learn a little more about rooting and the abilities that it enforces you to use, switch over to moles Parandroid ROM. Its great and requires a little bit more expertise in the rooting world, but before you know it you will be an expert!
Cheers,
Vanka
Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but Skype did give me some sort of a message about not running on modified versions of android, but it worked anyway. Running stock ROM, trinity kernel in tablet ui.

What does tablet ui mean ? Is it about changing the screen density to a certain setting or is there more to it ?

[Q] Removing Google Now

Like most people, I jumped at the chance to have Google Now w/ voice on my HTC Vivid running ICS. Worked well until the newer version came out which was JB only. I got tired of the 'newer version is available' nag so I removed Google Now using StockGoogleSearch.zip but apparently it left behind voicesearch.apk version 3.0.1 which would force close. I downloaded version 2.1.4, replaced it in the system/app folder and changed the permissions to be the same (rw user, r system) and it works well until I reboot. When I reboot it re-installs version 3.0.1 and I have to install 2.1.4 and it works again. I know I'm missing something obviously but I don't know what. Any ideas?
Just reflash your ROM without wiping should remove whatever Google now added

correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you have to run an RUU
You know you could have just swiped away the card notifying you of the new version, and it wouldn't have nagged you anymore. As far as removing it, you should have made a backup before flashing it, as is advised multiple times in the OP of the Google Now for ICS thread... just flashing whatever ROM you're running should get you back, but you may end up having to full wipe/reflash

[Q] Possibly Bricked Stock ROM??

Hey all,
Got sort of an odd problem. I recently upgraded my Droid 4 with the Jelly Bean OTA update, and it was running great. But today, I ran across 1% Battery Mod for JB users (located at the link below), and thought I'd try it. But, I think I misread it. Looks like it's for a "Leaked" OTA, which I'm guessing is different from the official one...whoops
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2132420
Stupid me, I flashed it over the stock ROM using Safestrap 3.11, and got a boot animation loop (constant red Droid Eye - no boot). Well, I did make a backup of the stock ROM before I flashed it, and figured I could just restore it. But, when I did, it still wouldn't boot. Just a blank black screen...not good
I'm guessing Safestrap isn't meant to be used like that. But anyway, I actually tried restoring the same backup that I made of the Stock ROM to a ROM Slot, and wouldn't you know it, it worked. It booted up fine and I can use it. I'm glad I'm not screwed in that regard, but anyway I was wondering if there's a way I can fix the Stock ROM slot. I'm not too terribly worried since I can use the ROM slot that I created, but just wanted to know.
Am I gonna have to wait for the fastboot files to come out? Thanks in advance.

Wow, I didn't know that the jb xml was found already, either. I guess I didn't look hard enough. Just for future reference, if I needed to flash it, how would I go about doing it? Would I need to use RSD Lite? And is it just self explainatory? I've used the ICS Utility once, and I'm assuming that RSD Lite is similar. Thanks again guys.
