2G only mode - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys/Girls,
For some strange reason I don't have an option for GSM (2G mode) only, I'm on three, anyone else have this same issue?
The problem I have is in my house my signal isn't great, I flick between 3G to browse the internet (as have no WiFi atm until Sky install it), but most of the time my phone will switch to 2G (roaming) which I have almost full signal when this happens. Though when I need to switch from 2G or 3G our visa versa the only way I can do it is search for network's then choose 3G or 2G on three, is there an alternative method?
I've downloaded tasker so I can set up my phone to switch to 2G and stay in that mode when I get home, when I get WiFi, though I'm trying to get my head around it atm. Can tasker solve my problem with a widget etc?
Thanks in advance!

Three is a 3g only network
2g used to be available as a fallback when there was no 3 network but this ended a year or 2 ago

That makes perfect sense now, not sure why I didn't think of that. Though my phone still falls back to a 2G network it just means I don't get a choice if it does it or not.

You can try to change it by entering *#*#4636#*#* in dial pad under phone information.

Awesome! That worked a treat! Now do you know if I can set tasker to run a task like that?
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2

Sorry no idea about tasker.
Sent from my C6602 using xda premium

For tasker you need to be rooted. You need to resign the rom then you can install toggle 2g by themasterbarron which gives a plug in to work with tasker

You are lucky.. Where am the fall back was totally removed so there was no 2g service of any type as there is reasonable 3g coverage. But the signal never carried into my house
3 will remove the ability country wide at some point because the 2g service is provided by another carrier by roaming agreements which obviously costs 3

Ah I thought it was root only, will look into that thanks.
Yeah well if they remove 2G from my area I will have a mega problem as signal as poor very poor! I switched from Orange recently because of poor signal in my house, just got to hope that they increase the 3G coverage first!

Is your phone from Three? If yes, if you flash one of the unbranded images with flashtool (no risk, no data loss) you'll gain many more settings.

Yes it is... When you say no risk does that mean if something goes wrong it and I have to send it to three for repair they won't know? Sorry I've only had HTCs and Samsungs.

Make an ftf backup of your firmware(there is how to in dev section),and you can flash it back when needed.

AW: 2G only mode
"Free" devices interestingly have more options, see screenshot attached.
Make sure to report back your findings in case you unbrand your device.

Your screenshot displays what I was expecting to see on mine...but once I understood that three restrict certain settings in their firmware it made sense.
I will certainly upload a screenshot once I get around to following those instructions

This has been known for awhile. They affect the behavior of the signal. GSM autoprl is best because it'll goto 2g networks when 3G isn't available and LTE lets you use AWS LTE if your carrier has any. And CDMA won't work for us and I feel LTE/GSM Auto will first look for LTE but then degrade to 3G then 2G.
Sure, I think so... maybe like 6 weeks ago or something
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007943
the N4 has an active LTE chip that can be accessed though a menu ( that you obviously found. ) - It does only work on Canadian LTE bands ( rogers afaik ) and on some lucky markets of AT&T's LTE
It's the 1800 range i believe.
Stock setting is WCDMA

Drops from H+ to 3G or loses data completely?
This is off topic but how is the GPS on this phone for navigation? I currently have at&t Galaxy Note1 and it's GPS is spot on compared to my Captivate (Galaxy S1) which was horrible at best

Unless you have a special Nexus with a built-in phone option, no. The Nexus isn't a phone.
It does wifi. And I use my phone as a wifi hotspot when I want to connect away form my home network.

I guess you didn't know that there is a GSM Nexus 7.... It uses the back hauled HSPA+ and will go to 2g/edge in poor signal areas.

Just wanted to confirm; there are actually 3G and an LTE version of the Nexus 7 out there. As to what dropofdreams2 said, there is an option on the 3G model to only use a 2G connection. The tablet will also switch over automatically when there is no 3G service available, or of the signal is too weak.
There is no LTE Nexus 7. It uses back hauled 3g known as HSPA+.

Nope. Each device behaves differently and every person uses theirs differently. The answer is that you will have to find out by doing it yourself.

I just did the same thing but it went right back to 1 bar. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact I use an Airave in my home? I wouldn't think it should though, because the signal strength reporting was ok prior to the update.
Mine went back to 1 bar too. This is the same problem I had when I first got the one and their first small update fixed that. Now back to the original crap reception on 4g.

Well... I just hope they make a fix for it soon. It doesn't seem to be anything serious, just annoying.

Mja. Lets you modify apn!

Well I had seen someone asking about this and I gave it a try.
I updated from MF9 to MJA 4.3.
Inserted a non-sprint sim card (telcel from Mexico) and I was given the option to change or add apn.
I've been trying to attach the screen shot s but the app won't let me.?

No you must first install APN shortcut from the play store, use it to modify your apns ,
I almost never need to change my network mode! But just in case you do, go to your mobile networks or to your dialer and * #*#4636#*#* and then click on phone information,I hope it works for you man, please let me know if it works thanks
And just one more thing, after you modify your apns you might need to wait for a few minutes before you get 4g, it happened me

When you say 4G what do you mean? Hspa+? I don't think that this phone even has the capability of band 4 lte. I wrote a guide on domestic sim unlock that is reliable and any input you have on it would be great. Check my profile for the link.
