Im helping a friend flash his SGS and I dont want a messed up product code or IMEI on his phone, can anyone provide the steps on how to make a FULL and COMPLETE bit by bit back up of the /efs folder?
Thanks!
Titanium backup comes to mind
else nandroid backup included with the ROM Manager from clockwork
just copyn it to sdcard is useless?
I used root explorer (you can find it on the market) and worked just fine when restored after jpc. Just copy the folder in a safe place (sd, pc, dropboox).
efs backup
i bought root explorer but it says i need to root my phone first before i can make a backup copy of the efs, is this right?
yes you need to be root to use rootexplorer .. see if z4root to root your phone works.
Sgs Tools from the market has a nice efs backup feature. Being paranoid I used Sgs Tools ALONG With a straight copy of the efs folder using Root Explorer... and yes, you can't even touch the efs folder unless you have rooted your phone.

Just wondering guys, is backing up the efs folder enough to preserve the IMEI number?
How would you go about restoring it if your IMEI number changed?
Thanks
I know there are a lot of apps for back up/restoring, but does anyone know any working for ICS? I have tried AppExtractor with ROM Manager, didn't work. The Message-app started to behave strange. Tried SMS Backup & Restore, was able to restore the sms but couldn't not open them.
I'm currently using NovaHD's ICS Rom.
You can restore your messages from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db and mmssms.db-journal in your nandroid backup (just extract and replace)
And your calls from /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/database/contacts2.db and contacts2.db-journal
(Extract and replace)
Nandroid = CWM?
So, basically your saying that i should extract my backup and the rom, then find these folders extract the backup one to the rom and then zip it again?
Two options
#1 Restore your backup, copy the files to a temp folder on sdcard, flash your new rom and replace them
#2 Extract them from your backup and then replace them
It might be other solutions aswell but these are simple
Nandroid = CWM

Not gonna have to until friday to test this, but really thanks! Sounds pretty easy!

just a small mention....file types from CM7 or Cm 9 are not the same with other GB formats....so are not comaptible....be careful with that.
HerrKuk, i'm kind of new to rooting but i need android sdk to do this?!
Sreeprajay, i'm goding from stock rom to custom, should work right?!

Nope, just root and and root explorer (or similar)
You dont even need a computer
Or use nandroid browser from the market : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.goddchen.android.nandroidbrowser

from the stock to custom, it will be prefect...just make sure once you are rooted, backup your msgs and call logs by either apps or by backing the ROM totally....
Hope it helps
So, i installed root explorer, copied mmssms.db(no journal-file), flashed owain's rom, installed root explorer, replaced my mmssms.db file in the rom, rebooted and the SMS-client won't start.
Optimus, maybe this will help you:
This is "backup to gmail"
I have got this aplication (paid) but it`s works on ICS (owain 29)
Take a look on my screenshot.
sms backup & restore works perfectly for me, but no idea on that phone call log
Albatros2605, MoFosis, Thanks for your help guys, but managed to restore my SMS by using SMS Backup+, which copies everything to your gmail and then downloads it to restore the SMS.
Hi guys, I recently screwed the pooch on an upgrade to 4.0.4, and I forgot to backup SMS before doing it. I did a nandroid backup, but I can neither restore the backup nor locate the mmssms.db file in the archive. I tried AppExtractor and Titanium Backup, but with no success.
Can someone help me by telling me where to locate my SMS history in a nandroid backup? Thanks!
Does anyone know, what named of files / which are files containing my shortcut in Titanium Backup?
All found in /sdcard/TitaniumBackup.. but they are archived in a different way so don't mess with it if you still want to restore your apps properly..

Anyone knows if those .sbf files created by the included Sprite Mobile Backup can be modified? I couldn't find a solution for that. Would be nice if one could include things from old phone to restore.
I tried flashing a SlimBean ROM earlier and since then my IMEI has disappeared. I obviously can't connect to any networks as a result.
I have a backup of the efs folder which was made a while back when I first got to the phone and unlocked it with an app called
Galaxy_S Unlock but having tried to restore the efs with that app the problem persists.
Is there some foolproof way of restoring the IMEI from this backup? It's a folder called efs with an IMEI folder inside and a bunch of other stuff.
The /efs folder on the phone's memory is empty and I can't change the permissions on it with Android terminal emulator or es file manager.
Otherwise is there any way of getting the phone up and running again?
Delete everything in the efs folder with root explorer or any file browser. Than copy your backup into this empty folder reboot your phone and imei is back.

This doesn't work, unfortunately. I don't understand why not, but I'm still left with a blank IMEI when I restart.
After flashing a MIUI ROM I had lying about I now finally have an IMEI number, but it seems to be some phony number as the SIM card still won't work and I get a message about an invalid IMEI from the OS.
IMEI: 004999010640000
IMEI SV: 01
I can actually make calls so I guess this is some kind of progress. I'm scared to put a usable ROM on there now though!
Flash to stock with odin and imei should be back. But i dont understand why my method doesnt work. It always worked for me. I deleted all files in the efs folder and than i copied every single file from the backup folder into the efs folder.

I finally got it sorted with this:
http://www.darkyrom.com/index.php?t...40000-instead-of-unique-original-number.1876/
Thanks for the help.
And just for anyone in a similar situation, this method will not work if SlimBean is installed. I had to use a JB MIUI ROM to get it to work and when I flashed SlimBean again it wiped my IMEI once more and the unlock tool would not fix it.
