Im not sure what the advantages is to unlock the bootloader then obtain root, now as there is a way to root without unlocking bootloader..
can anybody elaborate?? obvious advantage is that sony cant disclaim warranty issues with a locked bootloader.
i would also like to know this

So read under android development
At a guess unlocked boot loader will allow installation of custom roms
Root will allow running software that requires root like root explorer

Are there any ROMs worth installing yet? I feel like its a lot of bloatware that I dont need are installed with it so it would be nice to clean it
i think everybody that even visits xda know what root is, but unlocking BL vs locked prior to root?
if it`s only the custom roms that cant be installed I`m keeping mine locked and just gonna root. im quite happy with the stock rom.

You can install stock based ROMs with a locked bootloader, as long as you stick to Sony's kernel.

It used to be that you had to unlock in order to root etc.
But now with one click root applications like SuperOneClick etc, is there any reason to unlock the bootloader? Is it required for any custom ROM procedures?

Not really (although it does make things easier to flash - using fastboot is very convenient.)
But then again, is there any reason to not unlock it? It has been shown numerous times that HTC will honor the warranty despite an unlocked bootloader, while it has never been shown that HTC has refused warranty service because of an unlocked bootloader.

Ah, so the only thing unlocking does is provide access to using "fastboot"?
I know; I warranty swapped mine that was bootloader unlocked I'm just asking for general information.

Yes, unlocking your bootloader = the ability to flash images to your Nexus One using fastboot. That's it.
What if I am not planning on using a new rom? I want to stay on stock, but say, just want to overclock. I don't want to lose any data.
Would that make sense to just root?

I think you can just root then via SuperOneClick.
I have another question about unlocked bootloader. How can I tell if my bootloader its unlocked? I know usually I have to flash slp to unlock it or set S-off and if I'm not sure it should still be locked, but when I flashed modaco rom it said something about unlocking bootloader. I didn't want to but couldn't abort! So when I boot into bootloader it doesn't say unlocked but any way to tell beside that?

You'd see a padlock icon at the bottom of the 'X' screen as you boot up if you are unlocked.
Thanks, so I'm locked.

Hey guys/gals
i have a quick question.
what exactly is the difference (featurewise) when it comes to rooting with an unlocked bootloader and rooting with a locked one?
i'm pretty new to android (iOS user until last saturday), did some research today, but didn't really find much usefull information.
main reason i want to root (at least for now. i'm sure i would find more after spending more time with my xperia), is because i want to format my 64gb SD to exfat and move apps over to it.
thanks guys
edit: and no, i'm currently not thinking about getting a different theme/loader on it (this is one of the things you can only do with an unlocked one, right?)
edit2: and yes, my bootloader can be unlocked

Ok unlocked bootloaders = you lose DRM keys forever and Bravia Engine doesn't work. Relocking won't get them back. You can also overclock/underclock CPU with unlocked bootloader. You can also flash custom ROMs/kernels with unlocked bootloader.
Now with locked bootloader you can still have root but you don't lose your DRM keys. You can't flash custom ROMs/kernels or do any overclocking/underclocking.
That's all I can think of.
yeah, i read about that whole DRM thing. i don't care so much about the Bravia Engine and DRM, but i wouldn't mind it staying (first time i said that about DRM), so thats one of the main reason i didn't just went on with unlocking.
is flashing a custom kernel something more or less common when using a rooted android? could i get the things mentioned done without doing it? (i think i read moving apps only needs root, but then again: the xperia z seems to be a bit special when it comes to extSD)
thanks for the fast reply

Well it's up to you. You can either flash custom ROMs/kernels if you want but you will need to unlock the bootloader to do that. Locked bootloader you can only have root and that's it sad to say. But you don't have to flash a custom ROM or kernel if you have root. because you can't anyway with a locked bootloader. Having root just means you can use apps that need root access.

Hello guys,
Just a few questions so I know what I am getting into
1) The phone can be rooted. However, if i want to run on a custom ROM or use mods such as the music mod, I would have to unlock the bootloader, yes?
2) Once the bootloader is unlocked, I would lose the 'Bravia Engine' feature of the phone. What else will I lose? For those who have lost it, is the trade off, of being able to run Custom ROMs and mods while losing the 'Bravia Engine' feature worth it?
3) If I have to send the phone for warranty, I could just re-lock the bootloader and send it back for warranty. Is there a chance somehow that they'll reject the phone if they detected that the phone's bootloader was tempered with?

No clue since mine isn't/can't be unlocked. The only reason for me to unlock the BL (Even though it can't be done) would be, to flash a custom kernel, beside that I don't see any other reasons why I should unlock it.

Once it's unlocked there is no way back.
So if you want to root your phone, use custom roms (without custom kernels) you don't need to unlock the bootloader.

Thank you very much for the reply.
I assumed as such from reading some posts initially, but then I went to the ROM section (If i am not mistaken) and there is a post on how to unlock the bootloader and then there is the Why section where it says that you could then use custom ROMs and mods which then confused me.
If i can use custom roms and mods without unlocking the bootloader, then I'll definitely be getting this phone.
I'll take advantage of this thread to ask one simple question: once we rooted the XZ and flash the Mods we find useful, we no longer get updates from the official Sony firmware in the future, right?

First backup your firmware with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188129
You can go back at any time to your original firmware and you can have the updates via pcc or sus.

My question is i got the sony xperia z1 which has me stumped with the bootloader unlock i really enjoyed cynaogenmod on my galaxy s2 when i had it and i never had any problems installing it, but with this phone i can not get the the bootloader unlocked, mine says bootloader unlock no, i have been looking every where and people have been saying that you can not unlock the bootloader if it says no. I have managed to get it rooted but i would love to have the custom rom installed can some one please point me in the right direction, or is the answer still no that it can not be unlocked? and if so will it ever be able to unlock?

If it say no the answer is still no. You cannot unlock bootloader or install custom kernel. How ever you still can install custom rom which uses stock kernel.

thank you, could you point me in the right direction with that atleast? I tried looking for that also and still could not find any thing i read i still would have to go in to fast boot mode but when i get in to it all i get is a black screen.
You only get a black screen with fastboot, the commands are issued from the computer.
However you do not need fastboot to install custom roms with a stock kernel. Look in the development section for them

Is it possible to downgrade to 4.3 without unlocking the bootloader?
I really need root but I can't unlock the bootloader since I need the warranty too.
Thanks!
Hi, I could be wrong, but I believe even with having an unlocked bootloader, you wont be able to downgrade to 4.3. You should however be able to root once you unlock your bootloader. Sadly, I believe there is no method currently of rooting your tablet without unlocking it. What do you need root for?

Thanks for your answer, that's what I thought. I did find a guide for downgrading to 4.3, but it seems that it's only working with a unlocked bootloader.
I use root for things like Xposed, Titanium backup etc.

Hi, do you mind linking me to that forum that shows you how to downgrade? I am on 4.3, but I am curious about trying 4.4.2 out and want to be able to bail out if I want to
