Customizability - Glass Q&A

Is there any word yet on how customizable Glass will be? Like could you install your own apps or will you be locked with stock configuration?

I assume you will be able to download specific apps. If not they would sell like garbage if it only had some few stock apps. There is no way for Google to make all the apps that people want.

Worth Flashing Cyanogen Mod?

Hello everybody.
I ordered my Nexus One yesterday- It's shipping right now. Can't wait!
But, I'm curious if it's worth unlocking the bootloader and installing Cyanogen Mod when it arrives. I know that unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty, and installing CM might brick the phone if I do it wrong, but I've heard CM adds some pretty good features. (Apps on SDCard, extra Live Wallpaper features, etc.)
So, is it worth it? Would appreciate any advice.
The only thing that could brick your phone is the radio update not Cyanogen Mod. I wouldn't recommend doing it till 2 weeks - a month after having the phone and making sure it works well
Are apps on Sdcard worth it to you? Extra live wallpaper?
How would we know what you rate as very important?
Do you think I should wear blue socks tomorrow?

I was just asking what general features and reasons to upgrade to it over the Stock ROM. But to answer your question, I don't have it yet, so I can't really say much, but I do browse the web, download stuff/apps, listen to music, play games, etc.

Yeah - what about them?
If OP finds it important, go for the ROM - otherwise don't.
Pretty easy, eh?

I do find tethering important, and other fixes would be a good thing. But high memory...I never heard that part about the ROM, how does it give you more memory? (I know I sound like a noob)

I gives more memory by utilizing memory the standard setup does not use.
This only really matters if you install a lot of apps and don't use apps2sd.
I suggest you search and read the forums more.

Actually that's not true.
The himem kernal frees up RAM while apps are stored on the ROM. The only correlation is if you have a lot of apps running more RAM will be helpful (speed) , but it doesn't apply to storing them
look its up to you guys but from my experiences i well never look back
the stock was laggy compared to CM
some of the apps you can get such as
auto memory
cm updater
droid wall (awsomest app eva)
metamorph
shootme (ok its not the best but pretty cool lol)
N1 Flash light
apps to sd
there heaps more but its also CM mod
like he has put a way to wake up the phone with the trackerball
best thing ever
change songs while asleep by holding the volume button
all the updates that will be coming to the nexus one (such as flash)
so dont worry bout that
The only downside is the whole voided-warranty thing. If you don't mind that (I don't - I unlocked my bootloader on day 1 with the N1), you LOSE nothing. There isn't even a risk of bricking your phone - CM doesn't touch the bootlaoder or the recovery, so you can always reflash CM or flash something else.
Unlocking the bootloader (regardless of ROM choice) lets you use a hacked recovery, which gives you backup and selective wipe options - a must for playing with your phone.
CM's ROM gives you faster performance, a faster update cycle, plus tons of cool features: root access included, trackball wake, himem, dalvik cache in /cache (frees up lots of app space if you don't use apps2sd). Plus, pretty much all of the kernel developers out there (IntersectRaven, Ivan, Pershoot, etc.) use CM's source for their overclocking and undervolting (improving performance while improving battery life) experimentation.
Yes its worth flashing for higher mem and other little goodies that come with the ROM. Had my phone for barely a hour and rooted it. Now i use cm updater whenever i want to use a newer ROM and im good to go. CM updater made the reinstall process super easy.

Yes.
It is.
I have yet to see a thread where someone says "OMFG I VOIDED MY WARRANTY FOR THIS CRAP? I WANT STOCK NEXUS BACK!"
of course, maybe I missed it....
I love the ability to play FLAC files on my Nexus with the CM

If it's root only...?

If we can only get this thing rooted and not fully unlocked, then will we still be able to have wireless tethering and overclocking, because I know in order to do that you need a modiffied kernel, Right? The only way to flash a new kernel is the same way you would flash a custom rom. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!
You can still get wireless tethering if you only root yes.

I'm pretty sure you can overclock with just root. The Milestone can be overclocked, and that only has root.
thats good, so to me the only major reason why we would want to be able to flash different roms is so we can get the latest version of Androis ASAP! Otherwise once 2.2 hits the DX we only need root to do the other awsome things! I only care for Overclocking, wireless tethering, titanium backup, and deleting system apps, and a few other random apps requiring root!
What about modifying themes heavily?
Having using a Blackberry in the past, one of the best things about it was the fact that the main theme could be heavily modified, (and often very easily via quick downloads) to show such things as upcoming calendar events, missed calls, and the intros of recent texts and emails; all on one screen at the same time, as well as weather and time. I don't really need apps on my main screen as much as a proper log of what I've missed, is coming up, etc..
The "Today" theme, in its many variations is a common example.
Is this something that's possible just by being rooted? Is this possible without even being rooted? Do any Android phones that are fully hacked open even have the possibility to re-arrange their home screen in a such a way?
I've seen that a calendar and weather/time can be easily done, but I'm looking for something kind of like this (it would show newly unchecked emails and texts if there are any, and rolling over the calendar reveals upcoming events):
img202.imageshack.us/img202/6293/bbscreenshot3.jpg
Here's a similar type I also used, that is less minimalistic:
hulkster1970.com/theme/9000/v2/v2_13.jpg
Of course these I used on a much small BB Bold 9000 screen, so I can't imagine what the Droid X could do, if these types of modifications are possible?
Root enough for that? Fully unlocked enough? Just not possible, and I expect too much?
Thanks,
--bb
If that is the interface that your interested in, you should check out the home replacement Slidescreen, it has that kind of layout.
wireless tethering is the only thing I care for NOW.
maybe when Gingerbread comes out then I want some

That's absolutely perfect. I will gladly drop $7 for that.
Thanks very much, Irishpride!
/That requires no rooting, or full boot access then? That's exactly what I'm looking for.
can a phone with root only access be flashed to other carriers such as cricket or would you need access to the bootloader?
By the way guys, P3 and Birdman are saying that this might take a very long time to get rooted if not never.

That is pretty cool. Kind of reminds me of my WinMo 6.5 home screen to be honest.
I thought the same thing.
@titanfan, My understanding is that rooting will not be especially difficult or easy, rather flashing custom ROMs will be nearly impossible due to the encrypted bootloader. In other words, the X will be in.the same boat as the Milestone since they share the same bootloader. Please correct if I am wrong

However, he's giving cryptic hints today that there's some big news coming about the Droid X. Maybe we're in luck.
Don't need root for BT tethering
BT thethering is already working out of the box with Windows 7 and Linux.
There is another thread in general I think where I've given some instructions. Don't need to pay for tethering.

Lollipop, or wait for root?

So after all the hype for Lollipop and whatnot, I've been wondering what exactly the differences are between Lollipop and KK. Other than the theme, the lockscreen notifications (which we already have with moto display), and ART. Are there any other major differences?
Furthermore, what's the general opinion on the odds of root being achieved? I know it's more likely on KK, but is it worth waiting to update for, or should I take the Lollipop update when it's rolled out? I don't miss much coming from a rooted device, other than the firewall. Xposed would be nice but I can probably live without it.
Basically I just want to weigh my options for when the time comes.
I will wait.
Also - what can now be achieved without root?
For example:
A lot of apps now support functions that required root before
Tasker
Greenify
Etc.
Being able to disable apps somewhat replaces the need for titanium
Sent from my XT1254
Is there a way to disable the updates coming from Verizon? I want my phone as "stock" as possible in case we ever get root so I'm trying to freeze the HD Calling/VoLTE update from installing but not sure if there is currently a way to do that without having root?
New to the VZ and Droid scene
I just got my Turbo and that update so far has been more than just the Volte after doing an FDR I actually noticed a little better responsiveness. I am looking into battery life now. Even without root or unlocked bootloader it is a pretty cool phone. Aside from the battery draining bloat, does anybody have big drain issues with command center after the update ( that Verizon did instore )

One of the main reasons I want root at this point is to disable the capacitive lights. They stay on a lot of times when they really shouldn't, like when watching movies or videos.

Amazing. Thanks!
Absolutely! Every day I find a new app that replaces a need for root. If anyone else has any other similar discoveries (apps that can do things we normally needed root for) please don't hesitate!
Example: My GPS was toggled by itself once (I think through tasker), so I have high hopes that there is some way to toggle GPS without root.
-I'm trying to replicate what happened and what variables I used in tasker.

I think this is a very good discussion. Is there any news on someone even possibly finding a root method for 4.4? I'll wait if there's any hope of root, but I haven't heard any new info regarding root or even if there is any word of someone even looking into it.

I dont think you should wait to get lollipop once its released. I feel the hold up currently is because lollipop is close to getting released thats its pointless to release a root method now. After the first lollipop update dont i wouldnt take anymore

Should I customize an android phone in 2018(19)

Hello everyone,
I have a big question, for past one years I think about the best approach to have a better battery, security, performance and durability of my phone (actually P20 Pro). But cannot told without doubt That it's better to keep the phone same as out of box That is to say I need to use stock launcher (for Huawei emui launcher for example), stock mail app, stock messaging app,.... Instead of third party app.
My Question is the following, should I customize my android phone in 2018 (19) or android system Begins to go in the same philosophy as Apple (but in an unavowed way)?
I doesn't make a poll because I hoped you want explain your answer.
And sorry for my English (I'm French), so please do not hesitate to correct me ?.
I don't really understand your question. Isn't the nice thing about android that you can do and have what you actually *need*?
Like the stock launcher? Keep it! Like another launcher better? Just change it! If you like what the phone comes with from the beginning, you do not have to customize anything at all. If you have apps that you like better, just use these instead.

Yes but you need Sacrificed the performance of autonomy or security.
Are you asking if you should customize the phone, or if you should install a third-party ROM? Because those are two completely different things.

Oh, okay. In that case it's really just up to personal preference. Personally, I hate the stock launcher so I use Nova Prime.

Question Notification issue

I select a number or period for notifications, only a period is displayed, and if I select only a number, no notification appears at all on the application icon.
Do you have the same problem? I can't live with this
Only the notification dots work for the apps, not a single number setting works for me.
Thank you, I'm going to return the phone.
Nova Launcher is unusable, so I can't exist without such a funny feature.

That's nuts
No, I haven't used Nova launcher since A12.
The problem is that it doesn't show me the number of notifications on the app icon, only the dot. This is unusable for my workflow.

Try another launcher, nova isn't even that good.
What if the dot is a 12 feature? You'd be returning a phone for no reason.
I did see the lack of a number instead of a dot in the notification settings, if it meant that much to me I'd wait for a custom ROM to drop which will almost certainly have this feature..
Actually I just checked my launcher, I use lawn chair and this feature works fine so the limitation appears to be a Nova issue.
It doesn't work well on OxygenOS, not on Nova launcher. All launchers have glitch since A12.
And yes, that's one of the reasons I'll give it back. In fact, I bought it as an alternative to the Galaxy S22Ultra, which I did not want to wait for the tuning of the terrible SW. But when I have to wait, I'd rather wait with S22u in hand

Dude it's a OnePlus device, it was spawned by a guy made popular for making Cyanogen Mod? It is the XDA surrogate son..
You can unlock the bootloader and root without risk. Something a Samsung cannot do and will never be able to do.
You flash anything with Odin and it's warranty goodbye to your Samsung.
Sure people root, It's a OnePlus device, hell I'd question them if they didn't, they stand to gain not lose features.
Btw, I did not have to root to obtain the numbers on my apps.
Just saying.
Plus no one is trying to convince you of anything, they're saying out loud some truths, whether your read it or understand it is besides the point.
Mods. Can this thread be closed? The OP obviously doesn't want a solution and has already started that they intend to return their device, I see no point in leaving it open, it'll lead to conflict without resolution
