Galaxy S 3-year ROM discussion - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody,
I start to admire and thanks all devs and all the other PPL that make this forum one of the best if not the best all around.
I have a i9000 for about 3 years and what can i say about Roms... I honestly can say that i tried every single Roms in xda, and my opinion about it is that all are great, some with major and some with minor bugs.
Now i use SuperNexus 2.0 build 3 and i stopped here cause for my opinion its flawless. I cant find a bug, its stable and good battery.
One more big thanks for all you devs that work for awesome Roms.

I've got my Galaxy S 3 weeks ago and this was the first time that I have ever attempted at flashing CR's. I've already got ahead and flashed over 30 ROMs onto it. I'm currently running Mackay's ROM and I have my phone overclocked to 1.2GHz. I've had a HTC One V before this and I really didn't like it. I must say, this community is great. Great support, great everything. I really want to thank all the devs for bringing out such awesome roms.

Are there any roms better than stock for this phone?

There was such a good selection on the desire.there appears to be such a limited selection on the galaxy s...none seem that good.
Can people recommend which is best and why? Looking for a fast and stable rom.
My rom is xxjm1 by the way.
Not yet, stock is still the most trouble free for now. Won't last long though.
Its my understand (and hopefullness) that most devs FroYo. Most (if not all) are just themed and optimized roms at the moment.
We want froyo !
Yes, most devs are waiting for froyo, just because everyone will want to upgrade, and there is just no justification to make a custom rom with 2.1 just for a few weeks.
Have you not tried SamSet? Dude there are about 4 different Custom ROMs on XDA :| how can you say there are no good ones as you haven't even tried any?
Devs are waiting for FroYo and Cyanogen Mod, that'll increase the ROM majority. The Desire has FroYo (Official) AND Cyanogen Mod, so there are tons of ROMs. Stock isn't the best atm, SamSets is the best for now.

first off, 4 roms is nothing.
Secondly, setzuna or whatever he is called produced a bog standard rom for the desire.
I want quality original roms. Hopefully asop pure roms like cyanogen.
The galaxy s roms are poop at the moment.
Really...
Desire has 6month head start, also helps when the desire is clone of nexus one which is reference dev gadget so what do you expect. Have look at other latest devices that came out in last 2 months and tell me if they even have roms yet, you have been spoilt.

Agreed, ROM selection for the Hero (my last phone) were much better. I've tried HackEclair, Doc's StockRomMod and SamSet (currently the one I'm using).
From reading the forums, it really does look like all the devs are just waiting on the official Froyo release. I also read somewhere that the ROMs must be based off of official firmwares or else they won't work, which would make sense why it's difficult to get Sense-like interfaces on the phone.
Either way, it's only a few weeks - if that - until the official Froyo!

Seriously? did you not even read my post at all?
you CAN'T produce a 'bog' standard ROM for the SGS yet, It's been done for the other Galaxy S version(s) (ASOP ROM) but that's in BETA stage and some features don't even work. We have to wait for Cyanogen.
If you really want 'quality' original ROMs make them yourself. The devs here do it in their free time and aren't doing this to tailor your every suit and need, and you don't pay them for it and they do it out of sole interest. SetENZA makes ROMs because he obviously enjoys it and the challenge, and shares it with the community, and you can't compare the SGS and Desire development, they're both entirely different and the SGS is newer, meaning the Desire has more backing.
How are they 'poop' if you haven't even tested a single custom ROM?
I agree that we need more development but seriously, if you are implying that no dev is making a good custom ROM at the moment then you are VERY wrong. SamSet is the most stable one for now, DocRambone is stripped entirely so check his ROMs out. You need to read up a bit more, we all know that there is slow ROM development and for a REASON.
Hurry up Sammy.

hi,
Please don't make these assumptions. I have tried a couple of the roms and am back to my original stock rom now because none of them seem better than it.
I also wasn't suggesting that people weren't making roms or that things won't get better. I am just disappointed its taking a long time. I had good 2.1 roms within a month of me having a desire, asop 2.2 within 2 months.
Anyhow, the roms have a long way to go it seems... They aren't the best at the moment but I'm sure they will be great soon enough.

Okay, fair enough
Yeah but with patience we will see a fair share of ROMs in the next month, i guess these things take time, the Desire did get pretty popular though as it is HTC and Samsung is known for being crap with updates, but now the SGS is getting better and slowly it will overtake the Desire, i assure you.
Once Froyo is released, i think we can expect more than 4 ROMs

Impt point to note is when Froyo is released by Samsung, because Samsung is known for its delays and lack of enthusiasm, that we all take for granted from HTC =( I miss my HD2 and Desire

Disagreed.
Yes, Samsung has been crap in the past but with this phone they're pushing a lot out. We are yet to see how they respond to the Froyo update and how they maintain it, so you may be right, but i think that in this case Samsung will release it and *hopefully* maintain it, if not then XDA is here to maintain all phones, of course
HD2 has potential for Android as it's been ported, but WinMo is horrible and the Sense interface just makes it that little bit better, so glad i ditched WinMo for Android. Desire is awesome but the inferior screen and sensitivity made me get the SGS because the hardware is just that little bit better

[Q] Stick with the SGS or move to pastures new?

Considering what to do...
Will the SGS ever have a stable build of ICS? Why can't devs work from the Nexus S build and create a stable ROM?
If this isn't possible, should I simply bite the bullet and grab a Nexus S?
I don't know what your level for "stable" is but my SGS has never been so awesome since I decided to try the ICS builds that are in the developers section. Both onecosmic's and teamhacksung are just incredible ROMs, better then every gingerbread ones I tried so far. Of course there are promlems here and there but nothing that our experienced devs won't ever fix!
To me the problem isn't the Nexus S or the Galaxy S, now the problem is 4.0.3...
Of course the porting requires a lot of work to our devs while porting a brand new ROM to another device...
Just wait a little bit,
and devs will resolve most of the issues..!
I advice you SGS all you life, because it has AMOLED display.
Cheers

By stable, I mean, everything working, all the features the phone was shipped with.
The Nexus S is AMOLED too isn't it?
With Nexus S i mean this--> Nexus S...
I don't think has AMOLED diplay...
ICS on SGS by the way isn't stable devs are working in the porting.
I've got a colleague with this phone and he received about 1 month ago via official update on the phone ICS...
He tell me all the tima it still have some bugs on that!!
.......
yeah
were on the same page actually, but now i have decided to stick with my SGS, why? well said bec. it has super Amoled, and the firmware updates and ROMs that is growing fast <--there will come a time soon that developers will finally release a stable ICS for SGS..i guess..

Are ICS ROMs Good? Stable?

I'm running Gingerbread ROMs right now and hesitant to move to ICS. When are ICS ROMs good enough for daily use? I'm looking for stability and speed that is comparable to Apex and Mosaic. Prefer to use Apex right now because it's the most up to date and most stable.
You could read through the threads to see what others are saying. But I installed it on my Dads cappy a few weeks ago, and he hasn't had a single issue with it so far. Before that he was on Mosaic and was having a ton of issues. I used it for a couple of days when I put it on his phone, and it was probably the fastest, smoothest rom that I had ever run while I had the cappy. I would go for it.

Ya I'm taking a brief look, but not sure which to choose if I do move to ICS.
Basic AOSP (clean untouched googgle android) is Onecosmic's. The soon to be CM9 is team Hacksung. There is a themed modded one based of Team Hacksung's work. Wich one is more stable or not depends on the user, up to you to read and try.
I use teamhacksung's every day as my main ROM, and it works fantastically. I'm still running build 12, so there are some improvements since then, but I don't have any issues with it at all. It is significantly faster than all the other ROMS I have tried (I used to use Mosaic...). The only thing that is slightly worse is the battery life. If I use my phone a lot (more than texting...like, web browsing, youtube, etc), my phone dies before an entire day of usage. Granted, I did get my captivate the first day it came out, so there might be a hardware issue there too.
I highly recommend it. It was the best jump I have made, and it stopped me from getting the GS2. Now I can wait for the GC3

The 'best' ROM is whatever you find suits you. Best to just try a few out and make your own decision.

ROM help

I just put serendipity 6 on my buddys captivate. I don't know anything about the development for this phone so I kinda had to wing it to pick which rom to put on. He was on eclair . He loves it the new.but my question is, any reason to put serendipity 7 on it instead or any other ROM for that matter? I want to give him the best stability and battery with customization. Any help is.appreciated
I do have to say this was a fun phone to mess around with for the first time

Sorry, there is no quick answer. ROM selection is a personal preference thing.
However there is a thread on xda comparing roms battery performance. If I remember correctly serendipity was among the top. Fasty was up there too.
I'll look for the link when I get home and edit my post.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to leave him with something that it's stable and if serendipity I'd up there.my job is done.thanks man

I found the thread I had mentioned, but it's old. It has been almost a year since there were any constructive posts. It was full of squabbling, so I won't bring it back to life by posting a link to it. Too bad though, cause the guy who started it had good intentions.
Probably best to let this thread die also. Battery / performance comparison threads seem to get ugly after a while.

this phone is almost three + years old. so many ppl have moved to newer versions. those who still has this phone are moved on to ICS (Ice cream Sand-witch (4.0.4) based ROMs. ICS is fast, stable and good on battery as well.
that's why there is no action on GB based ROMS.
I am on Slim ICS and highly recommend it.
until they get the encryption unsuccessful bug worked out that is a pretty good reason to recommend staying with the gingerbread roms
i suggest you go with gingerbread because it was tested that it has a better battery performance plus the graphics drivers upgraded.
Legend 4 is the most active GB ROM with current and helpful developers still active. I run it with no problems.

best rom for tmobile?

good afternoon everybody, I am in the relearning process of rooted phones. the last phone I have rooted was the htc hero on cyanogenmod 7 with clockworkmod recovery. I have always loved CyanogenMod ROM and appreciate very much the time and effort the team has put for this amazing rom. I have recently traded in my iPhone 6s for the note 4. I am currently using 5.1.1 Resurrection ROM with the latest twrp. I was wondering if there are any ROMs that is better than the one i currently have. I tried out cm remix 13 which is the only ROM that has 6.0 marshmallow but it is not a driver and have a lot of connection problems. Also, I noticed that the device does not have fast charging capabilities once the device is rooted , is there any way to fix that? I normally go from 0-100 is 2 hours but now it takes longer?

My phone fast charges just fine and I rooted it a month after buying. I do use stock based ROMs, so that may contribute.
Ovrdrive is a good ROM with great features that is very frequently updated, but that's also a problem for me. New releases fix bugs, but often introduce new ones, and the cycle continues. I prefer something more stable for my daily driver. But if you like the cutting edge, it may suit you just fine.
I recently switched to Abstrk Rom and like it's balance of features/stability much better.
No best rom threads.
What is best for one person may not be for someone else...so it's a never ending story and in some cases it ignites flame wars. My best advice, try a couple and make your own judgement.
On that note, thread closed.
