This is a looooong story, but anyways.
I gave my dad my captivate, and replaced it with a Focus. Well, He went to a sleep study for sleep apena, and he's old and stuff, so he had the phone in his pocket, and well uh. Urine damage.
The USB doesn't work anymore other than charging, it says it's 'malfunctioned' when i plug it in, the speaker cuts out and the earpiece rattles.
Will samsung repair this free it's still under warranty. It's my phone now, 'cause he also replaced with the focus.
As long as the water sensors have more gone off you might have a chance but i doing it would work. The water damage will probably be obvious. not going to recommend it but you might be able to hard brick it and then take it to att

AT&T won't even attempt to help me since I didn't buy it. I traded a crapphone 4 for it.
Well, it looks like the only water sensor that went off was on the battery, but they requested just the phone itself when I called. The water sensor in the battery compartment is fine, idk if theres anymore though.

My Xperia has not been in water since 4 days ago, but my sound is still muffled.
It got a bit better over the last few days, but it is still pretty bad.
I tried everything, a stream of water (and drying it!), laying it in rice, salt...
Even using a hoover like in one video on youtube.
I still have my warranty, so taking it to get repaired is an option, but I would prefer if there is a way to clean it. I don't believe that the guys can repair the phone in such way that I could be waterproof again and I doubt that I will get a new phone if I bring this one in.
For you to get an idea how bad it is, I recorded a video with my TF101 and I measured the loudness using a Samsung Galaxy Mini and Sound Meter from the Play Store.

Fail. Anything suggested from this point forth is pointless imo as you may have seriously damaged your speaker, so would just get it straight to a Service Centre.

True. But never rule out that the climate might not be appropriate for drying it, but yeah, anything besides letting it dry on it's own and rebooting that you listed (besides the rice which seems.... odd....) will actually damage the speaker. I live in AU where it's fairly dry and all i have to do after my phone's been submerged for 10-20 mins is let it dry. personally, i play games that'll strain the phone to heat the internals up, usually helps it dry faster. Otherwise try a hairdryer on low to heat up the phone physically.
To make things clear, the hoover was not on full power. It was not even on 30%. I used it to get maybe some lint or dust out, not to dry it off. Also tried the hairdryer on slow speed and medium temperature, but it didnt help.

my phone had the same fault.
Sony (Sbe Ltd repair centre) couldnt fix it so they sent me a replacement
...which ive just received back covered in scuffs, scratches and with dirt surrounding most of the screen.

USA Today have an article (here) where the reviewer was testing the S4 Active. Right after he dunk the phone underwater, the phone have WATER DAMAGE:
Shortly after I took the phone for a dip (in not very deep water), the display went kaput — at least for several hours. It lit up just long enough to indicate that I had power, but I couldn't actually keep the display on and use it.
Roughly a day later, the screen came alive again, but the phone was still exhibiting finicky behavior, presumably because of water damage. The touch-screen was messed up and the device acted as if headphones were plugged in when they weren't. If this were my actual phone, I'd return to the store for a replacement.
I just got the S4 Active and thought I am not planning to take the phone for a long underwater activities, I am concerned that I am getting a phone that have a very weak water resistant feature.
Not sure if this is because the reviewer didn't "properly" close the battery cover / USB port, but I have seen S4 Active review and Samsung Event videos where the phone was submerged in water for a long time and it still works.
PS: Have ANYONE tried to dunk their phone in the water for testing?
My phone has been in a pool, lake, bathtub, rainy weather, all since I got it. I trust it.

I'd like to think that reviewer just got stuck with a bad unit.
But this begs the question: Is water damage covered under warranty? Either by AT&T or Samsung? Surely they should back up their "vacation-proof" phone..

My first one went into the pool just fine. The unit I have now I am scared to expose it. On the top between the glass and bezel there is a small gap... above the in call speaker.... I'm afraid that water will pour in through that... Can you look at yours and see if yours is like that?
He probably didn't press down the back cover correctly.

You mean between the earpiece and the bezel at the front? I don't see any gaps, at least not with my naked eyes.
On the back, bottom part near the speaker, I don't see it either. Trying to press to see if there is a gap, so far none.
What makes you "scared" on the phone that you have now?

There is a sticker on the back cover that provide a warning for the user to PRESS DOWN on the middle of the cover, underneath the LED.
I always do that, but I never hear a "click" or any indication that the back cover is now PROPERLY covering the phone to prevent water leakage.
Well, I DO hear the click when pressing on all sides, but that's normal like my Galaxy Note.

I've used this phone below the 1 meter mark and the only bad side effect I get is the microphone not working well for a bit afterwords, which happens really at any level of exposure. This phone is pretty safe in water if you use it correctly.

That is pretty bad. I mean, I am not going snorkeling and take a phone call while floating on the shore, but if somebody calls me and I CANNOT talk to them because the microphone does not work, that is a big problem.
I am actually wondering how does the phone protects the microphone, earphone and speaker? There are holes there and water can go in. I was considering the Xperia Z and so far the only problem with water issue is the microphone jack - the phone will think that the jack have a headphone but it's only water. However, that is easily fixable by drying it out. I.e. use tissue or something that goes inside the jack.
Microphone though, the holes are to tiny to "dry" with a tissue or something.
BTW, is the microphone STOPS working completely or it works again after a FEW DAYS?
Maybe I can ask those who read this thread to tell me if:
A). You HAVE tested your phone under water (splashing it, dunking it in a bowl of water)
B). What ISSUE you have after you did the above? Phone dead, microphone stops working, etc.
I am trying to get a sense if this is just a specific batch issue (I can replace the phone) or design issue (no matter what, the issue still exists).
If it really was then it would have lifetime warranty. The fact that it only has 1 year warranty like most of the phones tells me that after year 1 be ready to say bye bye to your baby

Decided to take mine in the shower to test after it got here.
I let the showerhead spray onto the phone, both front and back. Nothing wrong.
Like other people reported, the speaker volume gets significantly lower when wet and goes back to normal within a half hour. Also if the headphone port gets water in it it will errenously display that "headphones are connected" which blowing into the port will fix.

No it won't, because all things mechanical / electronics break downs eventually - nothing last forever. Even mil-spec stuff does not have a "lifetime" warranty.

I haven't submersed it yet but there's videos on YouTube with submersion and it brings about the same issues I discussed.
Higher water pressure will clog the mic membrane and make you sound distant in phone calls.
Maybe I'll build up the courage to dunk it tomorrow.
I did the dunk test the night after I got it by fully submerging it in a cup of water...worked just fine afterwards...although I was showing a friend that didn't believe that I had a "water proof/resistant" phone by putting it in the sink and letting water run over it and had an issue with the phone thinking the headphones were plugged in.only did it for about an hour...weird thing was that it didn't start doing it until about 2 hours after it had been wet. Although once it fully dried I haven't had any issues at all with it. Hope this helps.

Maybe leave the phone in the sun for a few minutes to dry? Blow on it? Several things help get the water out. But honestly, how often are you going to go swimming with a phone and then take a call immediately afterwards? I'd be thrilled that my phone didn't fry after it fell in the pool, I could care less that the microphone doesn't work for an hour - that's what bluetooth headsets are for.
Anyways, I've had my phone submerged in a sink with running water twice now, the only issues I've found is that after removing the back cover there is water on the outside of the rubber gasket, which looks normal, but I would recommend taking the back off to dry it out after exposed to water.
When i took mine into the pool I made a phone call right after and they said I sounded funny so i blew in the mic and it cleared the water out and they could hear me fine....

Not very often, but when I DO need to take that call, it will be a big problem. This is a phone after all.
I don't think I will purposely take the phone for a swim, but the reason I bought the Active instead of the S4 is because of the water/sand protection and want to confirm it works. If it doesn't, then I'll exchange the phone to a normal S4 because it's thinner.
However, based on your response and others, it seems it does offer those protection to a certain degree and the ONLY issue is that the mic may get covered with water and cause the caller not being able to hear me, but this is easily fixed QUICKLY.
My xperia Z has been exposed to tiny amount of fluid through the headphone jack, im using stock rom, but with doomkernel v9, after exposed to the little amount of fluid, it suddenly shut down and turn on again, but then the rom appear what it says at the bottom left "Safe Mode", at first i thought theres nothing to worry about, just reboot then everything back to normal... but when i done that, the LED indicator show Red color, vibrate once, few second later it vibrate 3 times and it begins to do that over and over again without even entering the boot screen... now i cant get the rom booted... Help me, what must i do?? Can i get it to work again by drying it up using a hair dryer???
It's dead, red LED, vibrate > 2 sec > 3x vibrate and reboot is an unrecoverable hardware fault.
Whatever you do, don't use heat. Put it in a bowl of dry rice with all flaps open for a day or two to absorb the liquid. If that doesn't help there is nothing to do.

Vacuum/hair-dryer are both bad ideas for electronics. The vacuum is bad because it creates a lot of static electricity, and the hair-dryer because, obviously, it heats the phone up to high temperatures.
What you should do immediately is to turn it off (hold Power and Volume up until it vibrates thrice), open all the flaps and put the phone in a bag of rice, letting the rice absorb the water for around a week or so (or at the very least 3-4 days), preferably with a drained/removed battery but this isn't really an option with Xperia Z. After this you need to make sure to get all the rice out before closing the flaps and starting it up.
Fingers crossed nothing has short circuited and/or corroded yet!
Please note: leave the phone in the rice for at least a full week with all flaps open and removable components taken out.

Hope it's OK. And yeah, as he said, the silica will work even better that's what it's designed for after all.
Why is nobody putting forward the fact that the OP's phone might be permanently damaged? It was powered on with fluid inside it, which may have shorted out some critical components.
In that case, no amount of time in rice or silica will do any good.
Edit, I see Rekoil mentioned shorting/corrosion above. While getting the phone near absorbent material quickly may prevent corrosion, it's likely that any shorting out of components would have happened instantly. I hope the OP's phone isn't destroyed, but I wouldn't hold much hope for it as powering on a device with fluid inside it is pretty much the worst thing that you can do.

The jack connector with the water sensor is really bad placed!
I've listened to music under the rain with an umbrella, i've just taken one drop directly on the sensor, so now i've the detector totally red but my phone works perfectly, when i've contacted Sony they said that not taking in charge of warranty :'(
Just be carefull with your phone if you're listening to music with this jack connector or use blutooth headset.

Don't take them for granted, but that doesn't mean they are completely unreliable. Just really make sure the flaps are closed and you'll be fine.

Getting a Bluetooth headset was a pretty obvious decision for me I must say.

While I agree with the sentiment that you should indeed be careful with the phone, the water ingress tape is in exactly the right place. The water resistance is compromised with the flap open (even with headphones connected), therefore the tape is positioned to indicate that the flap was open when contact with water was made

So buy a Sony SBH50 or something. That way you can use your regular headphones and still not have to open the flap for them.

I own a Xperia Z since its release, but only recently I bought a dock and a bluetooth headset. Before that, all the time I was opening ang closing the flaps that protect the phone from water. I knew that was not good for those little isolating rubbers attached to the flap, which do the job, but I thought they would take longer to break. Both sim and sd card ports are like new, but the micro usb port and the 3,5mm jack port are damaged, and the water indicator is red =\
Where can I buy new flaps? I want to replace the damaged ones for new ones.
I bought this phone in a travel to USA, because in Brazil it was not lauched, so I can't get the flaps in some Sony repair centre.

try either just googling it to see if some online distributor has miscellaneous parts for sale, or check a local cell phone store to see if they have some wrecked one you could buy parts off of
I take it you're replacing the flaps so that you can get service you are not entitled to? There really is no other reason to replace the flaps...

The OP didn't say the phone was damaged, only that the water ingress indicators were red.
Perhaps they want to replace the flaps simply to prevent more water from entering and actually damaging the phone.

That's actually a pretty good point hehe. Sorry for jumping to conclusions OP!
The phone is not damaged really... Some water did get inside it, but nothing a night in the rice couldn't handle. It's working fine now... but not water resistant anymore. The little rubbers on the usb and headphone flaps are damaged, so the indicator is red (I don't think they can go white again). I'm using a dock and a bluetooth set now, but it's too late. I want to buy new flaps and replace them myself, that's it.
And no, I couldn't find any yet =[

New flaps coming with the new housing, and new housing coming with a new LCD+Touch unit wont be cheap pal.
No point to get new housing alone as you going to crack your lcd anyway when you take the battery out.
For you if you really want to change flaps need to get: a parts only unit.

I changed just my SIM flap I have to check the site I bought them off when I get home but there sold and can be changed without taking the housing apart so please don't scare people with UN true stuff

You're right they cannot turn white again (at least not on their own), they turn red as a result of a chemical reaction with the hydrogen(?) in the water.

About youtube the guy broke the lcd and with his tool scratched the ribbon,which likely makes the audio not working.
Sorry I'm not scaring, I used to do that almost every day... If an small piece of the original flap's white joint still inside, there is no way you can close it properly even if you stuff the new in, because it will be on the way. You need to dismantle the unit to get the broken piece out. there is no spare room inside. At work when we have an xpz with battery change we just order a new LCD+Full housing with it then remove battery and mainboard than fit it in the new housing with a new battery because the Battery 90-95% cracks the LCD when we pull it out. To remove the mainboard we need to take the battery out.The LCD just 2mm thick not even a frame on it, and the battery is glued onto the LCD with a strong glue. That's why when you drop your phone your lcd breaks, not because is a piece of glass rather because the battery breaks it. Consider this i just want to help, not scare. Top of that you not supposed to know any of this info. I only know because i been trained to do it, by a sony tech, as i working in an official service provider for EE.

To remove the mainboard we need to take the battery out.The LCD just 2mm thick not even a frame on it, and the battery is glued onto the LCD with a strong glue. That's why when you drop your phone your lcd breaks, not because is a piece of glass rather because the battery breaks it. Consider this i just want to help, not scare. Top of that you not supposed to know any of this info. I only know because i been trained to do it, by a sony tech, as i working in an official service provider for EE.

No I understand but there changeable without breaking a piece inside I did it plus there's a thread I just popped out my SIM one now because I have a full set,I'm gonna get my girl to record as I do the micro sd one and post it on here you can change them without taking apart the phone or breaking anything or leaving a piece behind I'm not the only one who's done it,There's other people on here also I'm sure if a piece does break then I'm screwed but I've been careful and had no problems

Ok. No worries than. Good luck. Personally I using an MW600 bt and a DK26 charging dock to free of this problems. And opening the ports only when needed. The SIM tray is a mess, too difficult for Sony to use a trayless design. Bah.

Totally agreed and the best way is to use dock and Bluetooth earphones I'm gonna start doing that now that my flaps are new,and thanks for the advice I know you were trying to help,I was just saying it's possible without disassembly if lucky now if a piece breaks I'm screwed again thanks

Until they arrive, I'll try to learn how to replace them myself...

Just take your time you'll be fine, most important to get full white strap out,also I realize u only needed those two but the link on the first page sells all four for like $11
