[Q] Xperia Z vs Galaxy S4 - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI.
I am looking for some information regarding the Sony Xperia Z.
I currently have a Galaxy S3 and my contract is up for renewal soon. The S4 is a bit underwhelming and I've had my head turned by the good looks and features of the Xperia Z.
I just wanted some peoples opinions of how the phone actually is during everyday use.
For example -
Is the battery life really that bad? Does Juice Defender improve it in any way?
How good is the screen?
Does it have an on-board radio (FM/DAB etc.)
How easy is it to flash a custom ROM?
Being on this forum, I know the answers may be a wee bit biased so if anyone can give me an honest appraisal of how much better an Xperia Z is compared to a Galaxy S3 (LTE) I would be really grateful.
Thanks in advance.

Battery life in my eyes is good, I work nights and I stream music to my MW600 for about 7 hours, 3G is on, check facebook about every hour, read a book on calm moment and check the interwebs. Starting with a ful battery and stopping with a 25% charge.
I just have stamina mode on, no other battery saving apps
I love just love the screen.
It has an onboard radio.
No idea about flashing, gotta ask someone els.

The screen is stunning great for movies/youtube and books and this is without the built in Bravia Engine 2 being enabled. Battery life is excellent when using stamina mode and no other apps, I don't think other apps are needed for this purposes as stamina mode learns as you ise your phone and gives you reccommendations to increase battery time. The battery does not discharge overnight either, screen off button pressed before bed and the percentage is the same by morning. Excellent in my opinion.
Not used other options but the waterproofing and dust proofing really is less of a worry.

What do you mean with that bad!??? It's not bad, for some people it is, but that has to do with other reasons beside the battery (Software optimization?)
"How good is the screen?"
We can't say anything about that, in the end you will have to be the one that decides whether it's good or not..
"Does it have an on-board radio (FM/DAB etc.)"
Uhu/Yup/Yes
"How easy is it to flash a custom ROM?"
It's easier then it will be on the GS4:silly: Talking about no CM for GS4

Hmm, this one is a bit tricky...
Haven't really seen too many pictures made by the GS4 so can't really judge that.
The things that I can say about the XZ camera is that it really has potential, we saw that with the burst mode.
So Sony should be able to make it better then it is at the moment. (Software issue at the moment)

I'd read a lot of reports and reviews that mentioned that the battery life wasn't the greatest. If it lasts a day with normal use then I'll be happy. I originally had the same problem with the SG3, with the phone not lasting 24 hours, but Juice Defender leaves me with about 35% at the end fo the day, after heavy use

We can't say anything about that, in the end you will have to be the one that decides whether it's good or not..
Again, I'd read a few reports that said there was light leaking and that the contrast ratio wasn't the greatest. Just wanted a user's opinion on clarity, quality etc.

I'm not a big Custom ROM user, but I do like to root my phone. I noticed the Xperia forum wasn't the biggest, so again, just wanted an average user's opinion.
Thanks for the replies, though.

Yeah and I've saw a lot of people saying that the battery live is great.
I think that the XZ will have more custom roms then the GS4, even though less people will use the phone.

Ask the same question in the Samsung forums and you will get the opposite reaction.

The phone is just fantastic..The only reason i need to choose btw this and galaxy is by holding them togetheR Galaxy will feel so cheap in front of this galssy beauty!

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I think you've just made my mind up.

I don't even know why I'm bothering with this post really.
It's like I really love this phone, I love the size, the feel, the look. I love it.
I just cannot forgive the battery life. The camera, which to be fair is crap, I can let that go. But that battery life, oh dear me, even after rooting and trying every rom or kernel known to man I can lose over 30% battery life with just an hours 3G surfing, watching that battery percent whittle away whilst I use it is painful. That, and then the fact it gobbles up battery life (media server) just playing songs, it drives me insane.
Such a shame, vanialla stock android id beautiful, I can't go over to samsung because of my hate for touchwiz, and HTC suffer similar battery woes.

cheers for that, ill be sure to go right over there and post in there as well... thanks so much for all your help, you're an inspiration to us all .
My battery life is fantastic, the N4 is one of the best Android phones I have had in this respect. A day of moderate use, and I always have 50% remaining...
Rather than crying, try posting your battery stats.... It's possible it's nothing at all to do with your N4, but a rouge app.
Also give the Qualcom battery saver app a go.

I love my N4, but it doesn't make me a coffee in the morning. It sucks.
Btw, i do think it can have better battery life, i blame JB, which to me feels like testing grounds for the next big update.
Please continue discussion in one of the battery threads.

Advice please! Thinking of swapping!

Hi,
I've had Samsung's for quite a while. The S2, the S3, and I currently have the Note 2.
There are a few reasons that I'm thinking of swapping my Note 2 for an Xperia Z. One of them is due to the size. Like I fool, I never actually used the Note 2 before I bought it, and I'm finding it a bit too big (if that's possible!) in certain situations. I held a non working dummy XZ the other day, and it felt so much better. Add to that I actually prefer the design of the XZ, and a few of the features like being water resistant, etc.
So, I've been doing a lot of research online, and sometimes the Note 2 comes out on top, and others the XZ. I thought I might ask some questions and for some advice, and see what people have to say.
1. The MAIN thing that is holding me back at the moment is the display. I see that the XZ has a higher resolution screen, however I can see on most of the videos and reviews online that the colour looks really washed out when compared to the Note 2 (and other Amoled displays). My question is, if anyone has gone from the Note 2 or similar to the XZ, is it really noticeable? And whilst this might seem like a bit of a weird question, but are there any apps that can 'increase the saturation', etc? I know on the Note 2 there are actually settings on the phone for different display/colour modes.
EDIT: I have read on a few blogs that there might be an update coming with something called White Balance. Does this make much of an improvement? And I assume it affects the display as a whole, not just when viewing pics, etc?
2. Battery Life. I know the Note 2 has a bigger battery. I'd say that if I heavily use my Note 2, it's normally at about 20-30% in the evenings when I go to bed. How do people find the battery life?
3. Widgets - I use widgets a lot. On the Sony, can you still place widgets that are part of downloaded apps? For example, I have a downloaded clock on my Note 2 that also adds widgets to the phone. I'm assuming as they are both Android that the XZ will have this too, but wanted to make sure there weren't any restrictions that Sony had implemented to stop this.
4. In some of the reviews, they have mentioned issues with call quality, wifi signal, over heating, crashes, etc. The reviews have mainly been from just after the phone was launched, so I'm not sure if perhaps there may have been updates since then? But has anyone had any of these issues?
Any advice on the above would be very gratefully received!
First of all, welcome to the xz subforum let's see if I can answer you some questions.
1) I don't think the screen is washed out but it's different than Amoled screen with tend to have more vibrant/over saturated colours but you will get used to it unless you keep comparing them. But the bravía engine will add that saturation you might miss from Amoled screen (for now bravía engine only works on gallery and movies app). Have into account that the rom theme is dark grey not black because it might make you think it doesn't display good blacks but it's just the theme.
White balance changes the tint of the screen ie if you think it's too red or green you can correct it.
2) Right battery life on screen time is not the best for now in stock you will get around 4-5 on screen time. Time will tell if ROMs/kernels can improve that. But stand by battery is Great, some people have reported around 6 days with light usage. So the biggest drain is from screen usage but it gets compensated by the off screen battery consumption.
3) I don't think there is any problem with the widgets unless they have a dependence with a different launcher than stock android.
4) I haven't had a crash yet, wifi signal is alright, I find antenna signal quite good, I does heat a bit but as any new Quad core does and glads doesn't propagate heat that much so it's more concentrated on the CPU zone, it's nothing worrying it's just warm.
All and all I find it a great device, obviously there is always room but improvements but give it time let's see what our developers can improve or sony itself.
At the end of the day is your device and no one can decide for you.
I hope I helped you a bit more to decide and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask here.

That's very much appreciated, thank you very much! You may well have made my decision easier
I agree with wawyed's analysis. I was in market for note 2 esp for all the cool extra software features. But when I compared two working models of note 2 and Xperia z, I couldn't help loving the Xperia z. Btw, the screen of Xperia when compared with note 2 is really well lit and color reproduction is very nice. I am coming from iPhone 4s so a good camera was important for me and I will say Xperia is notches above note 2.
It does get hot but so did my iPhone 4s.
Batterylife is awesome for me.... I have been for 13 hrs and my battery is 53% I spoke for 1 hr, 3g-WiFi on, on screen notification via lockerpro, fb sync, Twitter sync and exchange email on push.
Only phones that I feel might compete with Xperia are galaxy 4 and HTC one.
I simply love almost stock feel of Xperia.

[Q] camera and notification led

hi guys, I would like to buy this phone but camera really scares me.. I read some reviews and saw some pictures pretty bad (with a lot of light a lot of white for example).. are images really that bad? other phone I would like to but is the xperia T with better camera, but cm10.1 development is better for the LG I think so I am really undecided.. :crying:
and what about pictures in cm10.1, are much worse than in stock jb? (I see someone ported the stock camera in cm, that's why i am asking..)
also, there is no notification led on this phone right?
thanks in advance bye!

The camera is the same on stock LG or on cm10.1 there are maybe different processes after having taking the picture but there is not a lot of difference.
However IMO, the camera is not that bad, I do not take photos as a professional but for me the photos are great.
You can see some pictures taken with the LG Optimus 4X HD in this subject : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1866677
I find them pretty good but once again I do not take many photos so i can't really judge.
Anyway the Xperia T is not as powerful as the O4X in term of performance and its screen is smaller
And there's no notification LED on the O4X but there's an app which manage to use the light of the hardware keys as notification led. That's not really clear but tell me if you did not understand

thanks a lot for the reply!
yes I saw that link, images seems pretty good, but on some websites I saw pretty bad pictures.. well btw I don't make so many pictures actually, so if quality is average I think I could live with the LG camera
about the screen yes I read everywhere it is better on the LG, as per the power I know LG has quad core so seems better, but I heard for gaming for example it is not so good as there are no so many videogames optimized for the tegra platform.. so xperia T should work even better than the LG with the most of the games.. btw I am not a heavy gamer so the performance should be enough for me
thanks for the hardware keys light mod, didnt' see that and it would be perfect if it works on cm10.1 also!
last important thing is the battery, I read some (pretty old) reviews where they said phone get hot soon and battery drains a lot in that condition, but I think with new firmwares/kernel situation is improved right?!
thanks a gain for your help!

Always happy if I can help
The battery life has been improved a lot with the customs roms like cm10.1 and the different kernels we have now (like Iodak, Werewolf, Optimus Prime or EPRJ). So thanks to the dev the battery like is no more a problem (at least for me).
Honestly, I can play my favourite games smoothly, I play Fifa 12, Virtua tennis and some other casual games and they are absolutely lagfree.
I do not play real heavy games but I read that with some combination of kernel and rom, you can play every games smoothly on this phone

thanks again! you are really convincing me in buying this phone!
last thing (for now ) can you confirm panorama works perfectly in both stock JB and cm10.1?
I read a review where they said panorama was not always working fine because of focus problems..??!! I really like/need panorama feature so I would like to have it perfectly stable
also I see there is no video video stabilization in camera (video recording).. but are videos good enough?

Haha this phone is really good but I do not want to influence you too much
For me, the panorama works perfectly, there are sometimes default on the picture but the most of the time the panorama do his work as it should
We also have a port of the Nexus 4's camera so Photosphere is available on this device.
The videos are good, it's true that the stabilization is not perfect but the videos are good enough for my taste.
Just to remind you that I'm absolutely not a professional so i can't really judge the camera since I never use a real camera.
Anyway for a normal use and with cm10.1 the camera should be good enough even if it's not the best part of the O4X
Hope that helped you

One more word on the camera: My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, which makes not that excellent pictures (quite a little blurry even under optimal conditions). When she took a look at the pics my O4X made, I had trouble getting it back Sure you cannot compare them with a DSLR -- but for the "Amateur", they are pretty good.
thanks guys for all the replies, I am really close to the purchase I found the phone here in Italy at about 270 Euro and I think is a very good price so I am about to buy it I am pretty sure I will miss the xperia T camera but some other things make me prefer the LG to the sony: for example it has re-lockable bootloader if I well understood, no need to cut my sim, removable battery, more powerful, better screen, better cm10.1 port than the xperia T (afaik the xperia T have reboot problems with cm10.1, so I think LG cm10.1 is better ) etc
just have one final doubt hope you can help
is there somebody of you that always or most of the time stays on 2g and just in case of need switch to 3g and then again go back to 2g?
I need to know if 2g data connection is stable, as I much prefer to always stay with 2g to save battery.. (one of the reasons why I want to change my phone is that with my motorola I must stay always in 3g to have a stable connection, in fact as soon as I switch to 2g I have many disconnections or no connection at all.. so if I change the phone spend money and then have the same problem I could kill myself  )
can you confirm 2g connection is stable on O4X? if yes, with both stock JB and cm10.1?
thanks a lot guys!

bootloader is semi-lockable. it's info is stored in fuse file, which has 16 or so chances of lock & relock. but for each lock & relock, you have different value of the file, so you can easily see how many times it has been locked/relocked.
as for 2g, i'm using 3g half a month and 2g the other half - i have 250mb of internet at 3g speeds in my prepaid plan, and after i use that up, which is usually aroudn 15th - 20th in the month, i switch to 2g. using CM based roms & kernels nowadays, and i dont have any problems with it. :good:

(I saw some posts about EUR-xxx etc)
tx!
This was before now I'm almost sure that every O4X can be unlocked

thanks mate you are great! I saw many threads with unlocking procedures but did not see that one sorry!
I was convinced by many threads on this forum to buy this phone, people says, battery life is OK, phone is smooth, camera is OK, then I bought this phone and that was the biggest mistake I did. To clarify:
1. Camera: pictures are not bad but when you want to record a video in a noisy place distortion is all the time, my previous Moto RAZR xt910 recorded video 10x better.
2. Battery life: I tried every combination ROM/Kernel and when I was unplugged my phone at 6:00Am after 12 hours battery was dead. This phone barely lasts 2 hours screen on time. So battery life is worst then every smartphone I had (check signature).
3. Sat Nav. I coudn't use this phone as a SatNav in a car because when you driving and screen is ON car charger can't charge this phone because it's discharging too fast. Result? After few hours the phone is dead unless you turn the screen off and wait for car charger charge the battery.
4. Dust under screen: I was use this phone in usual way, hold in my front jeans pocket, after 2 - 3 monts a big piece of dust poped out in a centre of screen, you can see it on a second picture on my ebay auction:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330939115679?ssPageName=STRK:MESOX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1559.l2649
Now I rather buy Xperia T then this piece of crap.
That's my opinion, I try to save you cause I regret nobody did it for me.
(sorry for my English, it's not my mother tongue)
wow that's bad.. you are changing my mind.. i would use a lot the phone as sat nav and if the battery drain is higher than the car charger charge that would be a big problem for me.. someone else can confirm that?
my present phone (defy+) connected to the car charger while using Google maps navigator and also play music at the same time doesn't discharge, but get charged! (very slowly of course but still it get charged..)
lukas77: excuse me Sir but what make you think that things with xperia T will be different?
tx btw for your opinion

if you hit a certain temperature treshold, your cell phone goes into "slow charging" mode, which can lead to battery being discharged even while plugged in. to bypass this, you can enable "unlimited charging" in secret menu that you access by typing a code. this way, you won't lose battery no matter what you do, as long as your phone is being charged. keep in mind that this may make phone a lot hotter than usual.
as for his battery problems, he must've had baseband_xmm bug. the phone lasts around 3 hours onscreen time for me (and truth to be told, i am not happy with that, so i plan on getting another battery. however, i've seen people push 5 hours onscreen time, probably with brightness set veryx low), and uses 0.5% per hour on standby with wifi and data off. you do the math how long it can stay in standby, if managed properly.
out of the box the phone might not perform the way you want it; finding kernel & rom combination that works takes some trial & error.
a big bug myself and some other people have, is that gps somehow loses signal with headphones plugged in, and it seems people with both stock and us with custom roms experience this bug. this might understandibly be a dealbreaker for some, so it's better to let you know beforehand.

thanks a lot my friend, exact, helpful and clear as always
yes that gps bug would be a big bug for me actually, thanks for letting me know! (i often use gps navigation while phone is connected to the car stereo through headphones to listen to some music so gps malfunctioning would be really a big problem for me!)
strange i did read a lot around about this phone and have never reed anything about that.. thanks again!
well my other choice would be the xperia T but that suffers the reboot bug in cm10.1 and that also is a big bug for me.. really don't know what to do now..
bye and thanks all and good night maybe sleep will take some advice's..
Try using CM Stable with iodak v6 kernel. In my case it gave better battery life and much better performance than any other combination.

hi guys, sorry for posting again here but i would prefer not to open a new thread.. but if mods want me to do so I will do that!
I have one "final" question about this phone.. will all the p880's be bootloader unlockable without exceptions? or if I buy it I should worry about that at the purchase and choose a particular model etc?
(I am asking this because for example for the Xperia T they say that if I get a no-brand one it can be easily unloacked, while if I get a branded one I can't unlock the bootloader at all..! is the same for the LG?)
thanks in advance bye!

[Q] What has improved after 4.3 update?

I bought a Z1 at launch last September. A little later I sold it because I wasn't impressed with the camera, and the weak viewing angles didn't help much either.
However I have some "seller's remorse" as I somehow really liked the phone and its looks. Also the waterproof part was a major pro.
Since I sold my phone, the z1 has been updated to 4.3 and has perhaps also had other updates. My question now is, what has been improved since launch? Camera, battery life, general smoothness (project butter?) etc?
Any updates that makes the phone significant better now than it was at launch?

You may have had a crappy screen, some have had a distinctly more limit viewing angle than intended. Go look for the thread on screens for more info there.
4.3 has been a bit of a pain for some - there's a known memory leak (that doesn't affect everyone) and some issues with the Bluetooth stack (again, not affecting everyone).
Personally, I have had no problems on 290 and am very happy with the battery life. The camera works great if you're not Superior Auto mode (and I've heard there should be improvements to SA in the future).
For me the only one thing was really improved, battery life. All other stuff was close to the same, no big improvements with the camera. Phone still working good. To me that's all.
Thanks for your replies. Too bad it still sounds like a lottery wether you get a "good phone" or not.
Yet, you seem to agree that battery life has improved, which is a very good thing. I was surprised at the short battery life they managed to get out of such a big battery. Especially compared to what the LG g2 and Galaxy Note 3 managed.
My use is mainly Facebook, web browsing, texting (SMS and Messenger), snapchat and taking pictures. And occasionally a game of Candy Crush or Angry Birds GO. You think it he battery will last me through the day?
Also, if anybody else has something to comment about improvements from 4.2.2 to 4.3, please let me know. I keep browsing through the different threads in the general section, but it's hard to find posts covering this subject.

going from 4.2.2 to 4.3 i noticed better battery life, way better camera(still not satisfied!).
battery life depends on usage and net signal strength. using stamina mode etc you can easy get over a day. on some days it even lasts 2 days for me.

i didn't notice any improvement to camera, and i actually think battery life was better on 4.2.2, but mybe i had a good setup then that i don't now...
Z1 battery life is superb, don't listen to them, i've looked around G2 forums, most averege users get 4.5 to 5 hours of screen time on a charge, the ones who debloat the phone heavely gets 6-7 hours. Z1 can easely get to 6 hours with stamina mode, so i don't see how G2 is any better.
and yeah, i usually get home after 14 hours worth of daytime with 60%+ battery, after being on tapatalk facebook whatsapp etc all day. so i think you should be fine
i can squeeze 2 hours of asphalt 8 easly aswell

Anyone coming from a Nexus 5?

I have been using my N5 for a while now and have zero problems with it. However, the Z line is a looker and I am contemplating trading my nexus 5 for a Z1. Does anyone here have any experience with both phones? How do they stack up against each other? I use my phone mostly for whatsapp and playing Clash of Clans. Looking for smooth, lag free operation and good battery life. I dont intend to use the camera all that much.
TIA

Hey! I had a N5 prior to the Z1.
I love the N5, in some ways it is the perfect XDA phone. I swapped simply because I wanted to try something with better build quility. As you're aware, the camera on the N5 isn't great, one of the cut backs to get it so cheap. The Z1 camera is fantastic (or else it is compared to the N5.) Also, the finish of the phone is classy compared to the N5 (another cut back.)
As for speed: out of the box the N5 is faster. They are both running the same processor, though the N5 is clocked slightly faster. Obviously the N5 is running vanilla android, though in all fairness the sony skin isn't particularly intrusive. Not that the Z1 is slow. I'm running Kitslim rom with doomkernel overclocked at 2.4, with thermal throttle off. It's very quick, just not as quick as a N5 say with trinity and rasta. Although to counter this, even overclocked I get better battery from the Z1.
They are both very good phones. one thing I really miss on the N5 is the huge amount of roms to try. I'm a flash addict, and there's some good roms for the Z1, but so so many more for the N5. Worth thinking about if you flash a lot.
I'm not sure if this helps. I love the Z1. It does everything I need it to really well. It's a beautiful phone, and quick. Every so often though I miss the freedom to flash that you get from the N5 community.

Thank you for that brilliant reply. Having been with Android for so many years now, i managed to rid myself of 'flash addiction' Once I find a ROM that gives me the best battery life and snappy performance, like i find with Slimkat on the N5, i dont flash anymore. Actually, once a setup works for me, i dont even flash an update to the same ROM.
So, if I am to consider buying the Z1, my main criteria would be smooth, buttery performance each and every time. I think its safe to assume the Z1 lasts longer on a charge than the N5. So, with a custom ROM and slight OC, the Z1 performs just as well as the N5? And what about heating up of the phone?
Again, thank you all for your replies.

N5 display is better then Z1?
The Z1 is obviously the better device, if you can live with slower updates,
With the z1 you get better camera, better build quality, better battery life, sd card support & waterproofness.

I think that 'obviously' is a strong word. Yes, what you say is true, but also the N5 is way faster than the Z1, it's much cheaper, and it will continue to get updates long after the Z1 is left languishing on kitkat. Also the XDA community for the N5 is large and active.
Not trying to start an argument here, but the OP seemed to be asking for impartial advice.

I think it depends on what you prefer. I like the screens on both, and there's little to choose.

You are right about the updates and the big community the nexus 5 has here, but what do you mean way faster? I have tried the nexus 5 and I own the z1, both are really snappy and smooth as butter, maybe you are using a custom ROM on your Z1?
You can even see here that the Z1 opens most apps quicker than the nexus 5

They are both quick, there's no doubt. I've owned both. For me the stock N5 is quicker than stock Z1. I found that everything was just a bit quicker. Also, I cannot remember getting any lag on the stock N5, where as Z1 stock does.
It's so subjective though. And device dependent. I probably prefer the Z1. I use the camera a lot (I have a 3 year old daughter who won't sit still so this is a big plus for me. Also, it's much nicer aesthetically. I just occasionally miss being able to flash a new rom each night!
