[Q] Is it worth it? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, hope I don't get flamed if this is in the wrong thread, if so, my apologies.
I used to own a Galaxy S captivate (AT&T) when it was first released. A year later I sold itto purchased the S2. I have the opportunity to pick up another Captivate for $45 and wondered if it would even be worth it.
I've been far removed from these threads and wanted to know the opinion of other captivate owners here. It'll probably be a spare for me to flash or am considering upgrading my daughters phone with this one.
your feedback is greatly appreciated.

If you don't need it for GPS, then it's a great device. Just make sure it's usb port is functioning.

$45 for a fully working one is a pretty damn good price too.

Short answer...Yep !

Thanks for the confidence in my purchase. picked it up for 40$ and it is in really good condition. usb port works just fine.
now to start searching for a ROM to use, then I'll hand it to my daughter after I play with it for a while.

[Q] Which Galaxy S phone would you choose?

Well being that my Captivate is bricked im looking into getting another Galaxy S phone.
Between the Captivate, Vibrant, and I9000....which would you choose?
In my opinion the captivate because of the high class look and feel of the device. The rest of the galaxy s line looks cheap. This is the only one that stands out.
If not the captivate, then the i9000 or epic because of the front facing camera. The included software is moot because of rom flashing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
i have a captivate my self, but the vibrant is easier to hold. but really it doesn't matter. but since your getting a new phone, might be a good idea to go with something else, the galaxy s is already dated, the 4g mytouch is nice, the g2, theres the droid x, droid 2, epic, evo. all amazing phones, the droid x is personally my faverate of the lot, well the evo is the galaxy s lol but flash + full keyboard = win.
Why don't you just send it to Samsung and have them flash it back to working order? Seems a bit extreme to buy a new phone, yours can't be that old. Also, have you tried everything? How do you know it's bricked? Did you even try a JIG? You have options. Hell if your gonna dump it that easily send it to me, I can always use a spare to flash, I'll cover the shipping costs, these phones can't be bricked.
i9000 based on the abundance of ROMs, kernels, etc. , FM Radio, FFC, and freedom from AT&T.

I9000 > Captivate > Vibrant
If AT&T didn't touch it, Captivate hands down.
Not to much into the 3gs look of the vibrant or I9000 though, front facing camera...ehhh, I don't need it.
But final decision should be up to you, and what you want.
And ditto what Rhiannon224 said... Are you sure your phone is completely bricked? Not to say you haven't tried everything...

When i first messed up my phone and tried everything i could find then i started this thread -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818347, and came to the conclusion that my only option is to try Samsung warranty.
What would you recommend i tell them when i call for warranty?....i doubt "Loading custom ROM" is covered in the warranty

Blame the AT&T OTA update, it bricked a lot of phones and Samsung is aware, that is why we got Mini Kies. Samsung will probably just reflash it and you should be good. Also, I have read that this will fix the button combos that some didn't have. Perhaps you got a corrupt bootloader, a Samsung flash will fix it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
I'm not sure if this will work.. just trying to give you another method to un-brick the device if possible.
If you really want to buy a device, I agree with one poster above. There are other phones just beside the Galaxy S line. MT4G looks very promising as do other phones. If I had to choose.. I'd say i9000 just because I like flashing too much.
I know this thread is over a month old but i figured i'd give an update.
The call with Samsung when smoothly and the rep didn't even question it when i told her it was because of an OTA update. Had to wait about 3 weeks to get my phone back and it was actually packaged more nicely than when i got it new. So overall i was impressed with Samsung.
Just to note, If any of you guys have to send your phone to Samsung....when you get the phone back let it charge for about 45 mins before turning it on. When i got it today and it didn't turn on while plugged into the charger (or from charging for bout 15 mins) i got pissed lol
Glad to have my phone back and thanks for all you guys input
Wouldn't trade my cap for other versions. I have held the vibrant....fascinate....epic and thought they felt cheap and flimsy compared to that cqptivate

[Q] Can't decide

My Galaxy S is not working fixing it will kost 180€ but that is the price of a Nexus S on Vodafone (with point).. I can't decide whether to change to a nexus s or to fix my galaxy s.. can some one advise me?

Really up to you. If that's as much as you re willing to spend, id go with the nexus. New is new after all, fresh warranty and your sgs may have other problems you're not still aware and you may end up spending more in the long run.
But that's only true if that's how much you're willing to pay and if you're not planning to get any other phone during the time you'll be stuck with your operator by getting a phone with points (assuming that's how it works there, it is here)
Another thing, updates. nexus is sure to get official updates to ics while we're still hanging for a confirmation from Samsung.
My verdict, nexus.

Moving On

Ok...First, I love this phone, I love this community and everyone in it.
I got the opportunity to move to the Galaxy Nexus and I jumped. I love the phone..Its missing some of the hard core that the Revolution has but its a trade off.
That being said, I now have a Revolution, two oem batteries, a Extended battery, kickstand case and dock that I no longer need. Anyone interested or know of anyone who might be?
Throw me a pm.
I will keep around this forum because, honestly, its much cleaner and more fun to read that some of the others around!
Thanks to everyone who helped this noob become less of a noob.
I love this forum. There is all kinks of helpful info. on revo.

As a REVO user who really wants a Nexus I have two questions if you don't mind.
1. What opportunity did you come across to get the galaxy Nexus? I only ask because I heard of an upgrade option through Verizon where the phone was free, but I am not eligible for an upgrade yet, so I was wondering if you knew of a different offer.
2. What do you mean by it's missing the hard core that the REVO has? I'm curious to hear what the REVO offers that the Nexus doesn't?
The GingerVolt2.0 rom is a good rom. I'm running it now with no issues

not to throw a wrench in any deal, but you might consider offering to lend it to a developer in the revolution android developer's forum to see if they can expedite building a cm9 build.

1. The opportunity was me wanting it and having an upgrade available. The timing was right, no special deals or anything (mainly my wife was in a decent mood and let me)
2. The Revo just seems hard core when you hold it in your hands. Its sings This is MY PHONE!!!, the Nexus is thin and slick...Which is cool and groovy. I enjoy the Nexus a lot. I wasn't sure at first that I would like it. ICS is a tad weird and takes some getting used to. Like all phone purchasing decisions, its a personal decision. Grab the NEXUS, Hold the Nexus...You decide....

It is a myth. Actually it was a scam. Verizon says there is no such promotion. They are however sending out emails offering 100 dollars off any LTE phone via their website. I got that email yesterday as they try to convince me to upgrade one of my other 2 phone lines.
It was a one day only thing it appears because the email is linked to a web page the offer in the email has changed to a bogo deal for the crappy stratus

Your personal opinion

Hey guys. Im gonna call and report my phone as stolen so I get a new one. A guy at a bell shop told me I could do that LOL im just wondering, what are phones that have a good dev community right now that are on bell? Im thinking of getting a gnex or s3. But I don't know the gnex is kinda old now. also I looked at s3 and there's already pages in the developer forum lol. My dad has an s3 so I play around with it sometimes, gorgeous phone haha. I just want opinions on different phones like the s2 and what not.

The GNex is still the top developer phone if you want to run the latest Android code and the most choices in custom ROMs and will probably stay that way for another 6 months or so until the next Nexus phone. If you want another QWERTY phone tho the choices are pretty limited sadly.
well, I personally would go with the gnex - so many more of the top devs on it. and its unlocked (even though kexec dev is making that slightly unimportant)
oh, btw, if you're claiming its lost just to get a new phone, thanks for making our insurance rates go up. why not sell it on swappa and upgrade that way?

Alright! Haha. Gnex it might for sure be. Just the fact its already been out for a year made me think people might have moved on to something else now. Thanks for your reply. The guy at the bell store told me to do that if I want a new phone. But thanks tips and your welcome for that.

Yeah, but if you still have the phone I hope you don't plan on using it with your carrier. I did have my phone stolen once at a theme park (yaay girl purses :<) and when I called I was asked for the information on the police report. Once you call and report it stolen they blacklist the phone. Asurion was telling me something about having some sort of tracking in one of the replacements that I received from them awhile back.
And people wonder why companies get so strict..

Should I buy a captivate?

Hey guys,
I have a galaxy Nexus on Verizon. My girl friend HAD an HTC Vivid on AT&T.
Her phone recently broke and she needs a replacement. We don't have much money, so I started looking on ebay for some cheap phones on AT&T that I could get her. Originally I would have liked to get her some kind of Nexus phone, but they are all expensive.
I noticed the Galaxy S captivate is widely available on ebay, and it can be purchased for around half the price of the galaxy s 2. It seems to be around $70 on ebay.
I was considering buying this phone and putting CM10.1 on it.
Considering the price and performance of this phone, does this sound like a good idea? Will my GF be happy with it? I don't think she will miss not having 4G.
Thanks.
I've been running 10.1 nightlies with no problem for the last month.
You might just install the monthly M build on it.
The captivate is an awesome phone. I have a gs3 and my old captivate will do almost anything that my gs3 will grant it the gs3 is a lot faster at it. Development is awesome for the captivate too. Don't think you could go wrong with the cappy. I was running 4.2 aosp before my upgrade and it ran great.

I purchased one with a slightly cracked screen for forty bucks on ebay. It seemed like a good deal. I'm trying to find a cheap replacement digitizer. I have successfully replaced a few screens with no damage to the phone/laptop/tablet, but each smartphone is different so I hope it isn't too hard to fix the captivates.
I'm looking forward to putting a rom on it. My only concern for my GF is if she will really miss the lack of an LED on the back to use as a flash light. I wasn't aware of that missing.

If you want a reliable phone with great development this far into the life of the device than do yourself a favor and grab a Capdaddy. I've had mine since its release and I am not looking to upgrade anytime soon.

If I were you i would consider a newer phone. While i love my 2.5 yo cappy, and have ported and polished the heads... er I mean rooted rommed, upgraded and inverted it, its still is a 3 year old phone. Att has free phones (with year contract) like the Samsung Captivate Glide, with 8 meg camera, dual core CPU, slide out keyboard and front facing camera. Not sure how hack able it is, but if it is a SG captivate at heart things should work fine.

edit: things aren't going so well. I wish I knew it had so many GPS issues. Mine has busted usb pins -.-
Busted usb pins sucks. Was it $40 functioning as is? When $70 on eBay or craigslist you usually get a good deal. You can try yer hand at soldering and get a new port for about $5 or send it to be fixed for about $30-$40. By battery they meant its almost three years old so the battery is not the best. You can get some slim extended batteries really cheap or any battery that works for the Sprint GS2 Epic Touch 4G, but not the other S2's. All in all its a great phone though. Hellybean and Captivating "newest m2 build seems to be a little buggies for most" 4.2 ROMS are running amazing on it. I've heard great on slimbean too. 4.2 is the best my Cappy has been yet.

I am currently running a Vivid (Raider here in Canada) as my daily driver and I love it as she probably did as well.
The actual usability will be very similar to your nexus as cm10.1 is very vanilla user experience. As long as she doesn't need too much power it will be a great phone. The size, weight and screen are the reason I bought one again.
If you are not familiar with running custom roms, it will be a little bit buggy, but mine hasn't had any problems so far. Great phone and $70 is a reasonable price. (I got my first for $60 brand new and second for $20 barely used from a friend)
Keep in mind you can buy ANY android phone and unlock it quickly and for free or little cost.:good:
