Anyone know if it is possible to root a Motorola Droid 4 running Android 4.1.2? I have seen several videos and directions online for using razr_blade but they don't seem to work and I think its because my system version is XT894.
I downloaded the latest Motorola drivers and made sure USB debugging was set to on. Yet, when running the exploit, it doesn't seem to see the device. Any ideas?

Different cable? My xt894 rooted just fine with RAZR blade. :-/

All you need to do is make sure you are running the JB OTA update and have the latest motorola drivers. Install motocast, moto drivers from their website, whatever you can find. Assuming the drivers are okay after that, download Razr Blade, unzip the file, run the file called "run" and follow the onscreen instructions.
check your device manager, if there is yellow triangle in front of xt894
you need to update drivers

Try using Linux, the mod works better in Linux and use the Droid 4 JB utility, that you can find in the D4 Development forums and that should work great for you. It rooted my D4 just fine.

I GOT ROOT! I'm going to structure this post in such a way so that it will be easily searchable by those who are having the same problem.
The issue that I was having was that the RAZR Blade exploit was giving me the following errors when trying to root:
failed on '/data/logger' - Permission denied
mkdir failed for /data/logger, File Exists
Unable to chmod /data/logger: Operation not permitted
link failed File exisits
Device: Droid 4
Network: Verizon
System: XT894
Android version: 4.1.2
What I did to solve the problem:
-Settings > Apps > Smart Actions > Clear data
-Settings > Storage > ≡ Button > USB computer connection > Select "Media device (MTP)
-Ran the exploit again. Went through with no errors. Upon reboot I had root access.
After I had root access, I went back to the USB computer connection and changed back to Mass Storage mode.
Thanks for all of the help you guys gave me. I really appreciate it!

voodoo ota root keeper isnt responding after I restore root

Is that the latest version from Ubuntu? If it is, I hope they at least patched it for you.
Did u downloaded from the play store and if the root checker doesn't detect it reboot ; but make sure you back up root . Reboot and then install safestrap 3 (its somewhere in this forums its not hard to find )and then once u reboot phone again it should boot into a recovery screen right after Motorola logo you can continue and then check for root .

When I try this on my Droid 4 with the latest OTA JB update from Verizon, the terminal gets stuck at "waiting for device". This has happened previously when I tried to use the ICS Utility when my phone still had ICS. I've tried on several Windows PC's and none have seemed to recognized my device even with the latest Motorola drivers installed (when I went to install the drivers included in the JB Utility, I was alerted I already had newer versions). I have USB debugging enabled on my device. Am I missing something or doing something wrong?

My USB connection is and has been set to MTP. Is that what it should be set as, or is it supposed to be set to one of the other two options?
Does this work root on the verizon droid 4? tryin to help my friend get his tether back.
When I used it on ICS that was my issue.... as far as I know yes MTP... are you using the same USB cable each time... have you checked device manager to unsure your phone is connected properly... ... ... yes this will root...

How do I check "device manager"? I'm reading some stuff that leads me to believe Motorola is quite strict about the use of their cables. Some say you may need an actual Motorola branded cable to get the device to connect. Where can I get an official Motorola micro USB cord?
Thanks for the root suggestion. Worked great and Verizon tether started up with no problems.

How To Add WiFiHotspot To The Notification Panel
Missing Hotspot Option In Settings
Those of you that have the Hotspot option missing in settings, use the instructions for adding the toggle. Only this time you are going to choose the secure table instead of system. Select * for everything or chameleon_tethereddata. If the value for chameleon_tethereddata is not 3 change it to 3. Reboot the phone and see if Hotspot is showing up now in settings.
If you can't edit the database on 4.3
If you can't edit the database on 4.3 download, install and run the TB Restore Fixer from playstore.

The alpha cwm recovery works fine just is tricky to navigate.
There is an adb version but you really need to be comfortable using cwm anyway in case something goes wrong.

There are instructions in the Hotspot Mod download section. There are two options, one with custom recovery and one without. To use the one with custom recovery you need to download the custom recovery tar and flash it with Odin. Then follow the instructions to install. The other option already has detailed instructions.

Yeah it is in post two of the mod thread.
Ok, I thought it worked until I read "read-only filesystem":
Code:

Rebooting Phone
I ran it from CMD & tried running the bat. Running the bat directly never prompted me with the RSA. Running it from CMD, it did everything, include pulling the stock files as backup, even reboot the phone.
I've tried several different times, but couldn't get the RSA prompt.
EDIT: Still no prompt, but running it from the bat by double clicking the bat did reboot the phone this time. Othertimes it did not after hitting any key. I'm not sure it's related, but I can USB tether. I disabled my NIC & was still routing via my phone. Even verified the IP was not what my router DHCP is configured for.

I'm no expert on how the exploit works. It always worked first time for me. If the issue is in /system though, a factory reset probably won't help because that doesn't touch the system partition. I would try using the "Flash Official Jellybean Firmware (No Data Wipe)" option in the utility. If there is anything funky going on in /system that should fix it. Then try root option again.
several things can cause rooting to fail
1. It's not unusual for virus scanners, to see rooting tools as viruses or trojans, because they often are.
a virus scanner may remove the exploit used in gaining root access, without any notification.
If rooting is failing, try turning off virus protection before downloading and during rooting.
2. -Settings > Apps > Smart Actions > Clear data
-Settings > Storage > ≡ Button > USB computer connection > Select "Media device (MTP)
3. every time it says "rebooting" disconnect usb cable until phone has finished rebooting
After I installed OTA Update SW Version: 98.72.18-8 on my Droid 4, I lost root access. I read in another thread that RAZR_BLADE root method still works if you clear cache and data and force close smart actions before you root with RAZR. I did this and ran the DROID_4_Utility_Jellybean_XT894 which includes the RAZR_BLADE root method. On phase 2 the batch script has you open smart actions and run battery saver mode. The following came up after phase 3
failed on '/data/logger/' - Permision Denied
mkdir failed for /data/logger/ file exists
unable to chmod /data/logger: opperation not permitted
link failed File exists
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I figured it out with more research. You need your phone USB in MTP mode for it to work. Hope this helps.
I'm having the same problem. Cannot get root back. I am also using the DROID_4_Utility_Jellybean_XT894_WinMacLin tool.
Note: the "Battery Saver" wasn't there, probably due to my clearing the data for the app. My solution was to create a "Battery Saver" item. This didn't seem to help. I did not encounter any errors, but on last reboot, I still don't appear to be rooted.

Battery Saver will appear, you just have to wait for it. If you cleared data of the app (which you need to do before attempting to re-root with razr_blade), Smart Actions has to rebuild the default choices. Give it a few minutes and Battery Saver will appear. I've rooted 3 Droid 4's and 1 Droid Razr with razr_blade after this new update was pushed out (all had previously been rooted).

Yes, it did appear. so, tried again. This time, got the following:
[*] Phase three (this will take a minute)...
failed on '/data/logger' - Permission denied
mkdir failed for /data/logger, File exists
Unable to chmod /data/logger: Operation not permitted
link failed File exists
It still said "Exploit Complete" at the end, but alas, no root.
Ideas?
Thanks for your help,

Clear cache and data of Smart Actions and then force close it and try again. Make sure your USB is connected as MTP and not mass storage.

Awesome! I have root! ok, it was the Mass Storage Mode that was killing me. I feel so stupid, because right above my first post was "must be in MTP mode". not sure how I missed that.
At any rate, thank you for your time and considerable patience! :good:
