Okay, so this is a doozy. I recently got a Droid3 to replace my original Droid. I've had it for less than 3 months. Its been rooted using Pete's One Click Root for this entire time without any issues.
Last week the following symptoms manifested:
1) Most applications, including system applications, force close constantly.
2) I'm usually unable to run any applications, including the Market.
3) What applications are having issues is not consistent.
4) The phone will reboot itself randomly, sometimes constantly.
5) Sometimes after a reboot it gives me no service and has the "Touch Android to begin" screen again. The phone is completely unusable when it does this, and the only fix is to pull the battery and then its back to its previous state.
5) Any changes made to the phone do not survive a reboot.
This last one is the real kicker. I can go through, uninstall every application I've ever downloaded but if you restart the phone or it restarts itself they will all return. This goes for everything on my Internal Storage. The SDCard seems unaffected...
I tried the SBF trick here from rootzwiki. (can't link since I'm new)
This did not work. How it failed might be important:
1) The primary method (psouza4's) acts like its successful but doesn't actually do anything.
2) RSDLite method will fail in step 3 (mbmloader.bin) every time, no matter what fastboot file I try to use.
3) After doing RSDLite I had the "flashboot flash failed" error and the phone was unusable. I then tried psouza4's method again and my phone has reverted to the same broken state it was in when I started.
So I'm not at all sure what I can do here. Since the bootloader isn't cracked yet I have no means to load another ROM. The only method I can find for Droid3 is through a Marketplace app that, on the rare instances I can install it, force closes immediately!
Any advice or ideas at all would be nice.
As for what started this, only two things happened out of the normal phone usage:
1) My girlfriend tried to text me a picture for the first time (of some chairs she wanted to buy for those curious/suggestive ) which never got to me initially but when it finally did after the 4th attempt I was never able to download the image.
2) I put a PDF file on the Internal Storage. Its one I've had for years and its just some manual I needed mobile and I don't have a laptop. Confirmed its malware free as far as any software can tell.
Working theory is I unplugged my phone from the USB too quickly after uploading the file but I don't know for sure. Nothing else was done unless Verizon had a OTA update that would break a rooted phone (guessing not since no one else seems to have this issue anywhere).
Again, any help someone can provide would be excellent. I'm going to have to load up my broken Droid in the mean time. Keyboard doesn't work and the touchscreen is failing but it can take calls more reliably than my Droid3 currently!

I can say a couple words to describe my reaction.. OH ****. Your phone seems to have too many problems to be software related. Try to flash back to stock 5.6.890 and get a new phone.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Hmm, I guess for the mean time I'll just have to keep trying to get the Marketplace ROM Manager to install and launch. Should be a way to install straight to the SDCard that doesn't have problems.
Thinking it over, my Internal Storage may just have a bad sector... Yeesh.
Have you tried formatting /system in mounts and storage in CWM? Then reinstalling a fresh rom on top?
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
Negative. I didn't have CWM installed (stock ROM just rooted for certain apps) and apps are usually crashing now.
I'll give that a shot though. Sometimes I can use an app so maybe if I'm persistent...
and to verify, you are using the verizon droid 3 xt862? Are you on 5.5.959 or 5.6.890 (or possibly 5.7.894)?
Yea can't get any new apps to run. Interestingly, the camera app seems to crash the OS at the moment.
I think I'm going to have to try to RMA...

Its running 5.6.890. Unless I'm mistaken its the xt862. I've only had it since September.
well as long as root isnt showing and the /system hasnt been changed from stock rom, it should work. i do find it bad that rsd didnt work. i wonder if you were trying to flash the .959 sbf on your .890 system? I would def try again to sbf and wipe data/cache through stock recovery after that using volume buttons (android!)
Well, that's kind of the problem. Changes don't survive a reboot so i haven't been able to unroot the phone. I double checked and the file was the .890 flashboot. Wiping data/cache literally does nothing.
Is there a way to format this offline, from a PC? Going to try some more Google searches...
wiping data/cache should erase all of your saved data and force you to *228. Make sure USB debugging is on, set usb to Charge Only, try petes motorola tools to unroot but using RSD 5.5 fastboot .890 found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255198

1) How do you unroot with Pete's motorola tools? Is it a different version than the one click root? Cause that's how I rooted my phone in the first place but it doesn't seem to have an option to unroot...
2) The link for the flashboot file gives a 404 error. The attached .RAR only has the .XML file.
Any place else I can get that version?
just enter stock recovery by holding down the x key on the keyboard when you boot up and wipe data

If you read the original post, that doesn't work.
Okay so I had an outdated version of Pete's tools which is why I didn't see the unroot option. Mine is the older one that was a batch file, not a application.
Got that sorted out and it still doesn't work. Seems I may have some permissions issues:
Code:
> su
> /system/xbin/su
> mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
> if [ -e /data/local/12m.bak ];
> then
> rm /data/local/12m.bak
> fi
> exit
> exit
[email protected]_solana:/$ su
exit
exit
exit
Permission denied
sh[email protected]_solana:/$ /system/xbin/su
Permission denied
[email protected]_solana:/$ mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mount: Operation not permitted
[email protected]_solana:/$ if [ -e /data/local/12m.bak ];
> then
> rm /data/local/12m.bak
> fi
[email protected]_solana:/$ exit
(success)
That's part of the ADB log. There are a lot of other permission denied messages, which is a little comforting. The only thing I could think of that happened is permissions didn't get set right when Internal Storage was unmounted from my PC.
Since I can use ADB to access the shell, how can I format /system on the droid3? I can't seem to find the correct root name to use.

That's the reference to Rootzwiki I made in the original post, doesn't work sorry.
Using ADB I mounted /system as rw and tried to manually remove certain apps. Once I re-mounted they were there again. So something is preventing me from making real changes to the Internal Storage.

Where do you get that idea?
When I do this manually:
1) I'm running the command prompt as Administrator
2)I'm launching into adb using the command "adb shell".
3) First thing I do is type in "su"
4) second thing I do is approve "unknown" in the superuser app on account of it never remembering I already did that.
5) I use the command "mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system"
6) I use the "ls" command on /system/app and find an .apk to uninstall (not all my apps seem to be installed in this location either...)
7) I use the "pm list packages" command to find the rest of the files for that .apk
8) I use "rm <filename>.apk" followed by "pm uninstall <whatever that developer chose to name things>" command to fully uninstall.
I should note on my phone at this point it disappear from the application list.
9) I use the command "mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system"
10) I use the "ls" command on /system/app to confirm and voila, the apk file is back!
The app doesn't show up in my app manager until I reboot the phone. Changes to /system and /data are not persisting and I have no idea why.
I can't seem to unmount them either so I can't format via ADB...
Anyone know if it is possible to root a Motorola Droid 4 running Android 4.1.2? I have seen several videos and directions online for using razr_blade but they don't seem to work and I think its because my system version is XT894.
I downloaded the latest Motorola drivers and made sure USB debugging was set to on. Yet, when running the exploit, it doesn't seem to see the device. Any ideas?

All you need to do is make sure you are running the JB OTA update and have the latest motorola drivers. Install motocast, moto drivers from their website, whatever you can find. Assuming the drivers are okay after that, download Razr Blade, unzip the file, run the file called "run" and follow the onscreen instructions.
check your device manager, if there is yellow triangle in front of xt894
you need to update drivers

I GOT ROOT! I'm going to structure this post in such a way so that it will be easily searchable by those who are having the same problem.
The issue that I was having was that the RAZR Blade exploit was giving me the following errors when trying to root:
failed on '/data/logger' - Permission denied
mkdir failed for /data/logger, File Exists
Unable to chmod /data/logger: Operation not permitted
link failed File exisits
Device: Droid 4
Network: Verizon
System: XT894
Android version: 4.1.2
What I did to solve the problem:
-Settings > Apps > Smart Actions > Clear data
-Settings > Storage > ≡ Button > USB computer connection > Select "Media device (MTP)
-Ran the exploit again. Went through with no errors. Upon reboot I had root access.
After I had root access, I went back to the USB computer connection and changed back to Mass Storage mode.
Thanks for all of the help you guys gave me. I really appreciate it!

Yes, it seems that drivers are all there, it comes up as ADB Interface, MOT composite ADB Interface.

I'm no expert on how the exploit works. It always worked first time for me. If the issue is in /system though, a factory reset probably won't help because that doesn't touch the system partition. I would try using the "Flash Official Jellybean Firmware (No Data Wipe)" option in the utility. If there is anything funky going on in /system that should fix it. Then try root option again.
several things can cause rooting to fail
1. It's not unusual for virus scanners, to see rooting tools as viruses or trojans, because they often are.
a virus scanner may remove the exploit used in gaining root access, without any notification.
If rooting is failing, try turning off virus protection before downloading and during rooting.
2. -Settings > Apps > Smart Actions > Clear data
-Settings > Storage > ≡ Button > USB computer connection > Select "Media device (MTP)
3. every time it says "rebooting" disconnect usb cable until phone has finished rebooting
Last night I sideloaded the 5.1.1 update to my Droid Turbo. While playing around with it this morning, I accidentally clicked the 'Force RTL' option under accessories. Immediately after, my phone crashed, and on boot would display 'system ui has stopped working' indefinitely. The wallpaper would load, and the alert modal would appear, but clearing it just kicked up another 'system ui has stopped working' modal a few seconds later.
I cleared the cache, and now when I reboot the device, it comes up with the Recovery Andy image with 'no command' below. I don't mind doing a factory reset, but I have a LOT of data I'd lose in the process. All of my pictures are backed up to Dropbox/G+, but I have a lot of other files and backups that I neglected to save externally prior to the update ... because I'm a genius.
When I try to reapply the update, I get a message indicating "/system/app/3c_main.apk" has unexpected contents. I've tried to push from SD and from ADB, both with no luck. At this point I'm happy to just reset the device, but I want my data off first. All ADB commands with the exception of SIDELOAD return 'error: closed', so I can't even backup my files.
Ideas? Help?! ANYTHING?!

You might have to wait until the OTA is available for manual download and then flash it via RSD Lite. The way the zip works is it'll only install if you have version 21.44.12.en.us installed. You have 23.11.38 so it won't install now.

I assume you mean the 5.1 update? or did you try to use a 5.1.1 update for some other phone by mistake? if so there may be no easy solution.
I don't accept defeat. Everyone said my data was a lost cause, and that Factory Reset was my only hope. Yeah, well who's copying data off his device right now?
THIS GUY.
I downloaded the firmware, removed the "erase userdata" line from the batch file, and ran it to restore the images and partitions.
I then cleared the cache (again) and rebooted my device.
Back to the 'System UI has stopped' loop
Tried unsuccessfully to send ADB commands to the device
Opened and ADB Shell in Cerberus Dashboard, but kept getting disconnected
Sent an Unlock command in Cerberus Dashboard to my device ... voilla!
UI is still crashing, but Windows is now attempting to install drivers
After trying to manually install drivers for an extended period of time, decided to attempt it on my Mac
BOOM, FS mounts and Android File Transfer is now accessing all the files, even if my display is all jacked!
Next comes the factory reset. I knew there was a reason I installed Cerberus on my non-rooted device.
Fix RTL via ADB
I had this problem on my turbo after reading about a possible fix for snapchat image problems.
After a bit of googling, I came up with this simple fix.
This will only work if ADB Debugging is enabled and your PC is already authorized.
No need for root.
Code:
adb devices
adb shell
settings put global debug.force_rtl 0
reboot
And I suppose if you do NOT already have ADB enabled et al, you're SOL?

If your phone has a secure lock screen, it will not recognize a usb port for file transfer or ADB mode until the password/pin/pattern/etc. has been entered. The Cerberus method described above worked because it was able to meet this requirement. With this in mind, you have the following options depending on your lock screen situation:
1. Insecure lock screen, ADB previously enabled: use the ADB method described above.
2. Insecure lock screen, ADB disabled: Plug in the USB, transfer over your important files, reboot the phone in bootloader mode, select recovery mode, perform a factory reset.
3. Secure lock screen (all cases, assuming you can't unlock it with Cerberus or something similar): Wipe cache through recovery to see if that helps anything. If it doesn't, you can try reflashing the system image via mofo or fastboot to see if that helps anything. If not, bite the bullet and perform a factory reset. You will lose your data.
Now if you have mofo, you might be able to flash a rooted rom that can perform the adb method using a su.d script, but I'm not entirely sure about that.
Hi, just now I upgrade to the the last Samsung update and now I got the error.

I enter to safemode and still the same.
I hope there is a way to solved it without erase the phone.

What should I do?

i even cannot call any one with this phone right now ..
I did a factory reset and now i need to spend hours to download and customized all over again!!
I think it's because the tweaks and system modes of Substratum.
I think that on the next time we should delete all of the system modes.
Hope some one can approve it because I really don't want to get through this again.
What make it to a sad joke is that the update is not what i thought it was, still I don't have the new Samsung VPN.

I think that on the next time we should delete all of the system modes.
Hope some one can approve it because I really don't want to get through this again.
What make it to a sad joke is that the update is not what i thought it was, still I don't have the new Samsung VPN.
All for nothing!!!

Correct, you have to uninstall all your layers and substratrum mods before accepting the OTA. I just saw this but you can boot into safe mode while system ui is fc and uninstall all the mods there and you should be good when you boot out of safe mode. No factory data reset needed.

I posted this before in another thread...
I was able to fix it without factory resetting my phone. To do it, connect your phone to a pc (pc that you previously connected your phone to and always allowed access), in cmd with adb, run "adb shell pm list packages > whateveryouwanttonameit.txt" and look through the text file for apps you installed that changed your status bar. Then in cmd run "adb uninstall com.appyouwanttouninstall". I did 4 among many, checked my phone, and didn't get the system ui has stopped messages

Thanks for the tip! Rather than saving to text I just used one window to output the packages to stdout, while I used another to do the uninstalls. Removing these two packages fixed the issue:
com.android.settings.SwiftDark.Android8defaultgrey.SamsungS8
com.android.systemui.SwiftDark.SamsungS8
how can u access to cmd with adb ?

Did any of you have substratum installed?
EDIT: i just read up higher.
This also happened to me with substratum. One thing I did before however is I already had adb debugging enabled and trusted with my pc via adb.
I used these instructions found here for adb

What is the latest version of samsung update?
Mine is N950FXXU2BQKG/N950FOXM2BQKG/N950FXXU2BQKG.
My phone updat 6 days ago, and I don't have the new samsung VPN.
And just to be clear, in the next update after uninstall all the layers and substratrum mods and accepting the OTA, it is safe to install all the layers again after the update?
Thanks again

You should have the VPN under wifi advance settings.
Yes it's safe to install all your layers and substratrum mods I using it on 2BQKG.
Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks houboy, you're a lifesaver.
Tried to center the status bar clock and the phone crashed.
Your method worked like a charm
I was reading through the reddit thread posted earlier and found an alternative solution which worked for me.
Log into Samsungs Find My Phone website, unlock your device and then switch on Power Saving Mode, then reboot. Once in Power Saver you will regain control of your phone. Now, switch off power saver and go disable all substratum mods and reboot again.
Happened twice to me while setting up my new Note 8. Resolved to finally wipe through hard reset menu, and setup as new phone. Some Substratum addon was lingering when I did a restore which was likely causing the UI crash.
this happened 3 times to my note 8, the culprit seems to be android pay, once you add a credit card to be specific . To fix the phone you need to put the phone in powersaving mode via Samsung dive then reboot.
once the phone rebooted in power saving mode just put it back to normal , after this procedure all cards are removed from google pay.

What's strange is that I have substratum installed but never ran it but I'm still getting the system UI error, thank good it hasn't totally blocked need but still doesn't make sense why this is all happening. I forgot I even installed it honestly.
I just uninstalled it so I'll see if that changes anything.
@squick You could try booting into safe mode to see if its a program causing it, but for me, i updated my phone software(update) with the substratum ui apk installed which caused me to get the force close error where only the screen showed system ui has stopped. I used adb to get a list of packages and remove the substratum system ui apk. A sure way to fix would be to reset the phone, but if you're able to use it, try removing apps you dont need from your applications in the settings. It's possible there could be another app interfering with the system ui
