We now have 4G lte service in my area. Well at least on my wife's Samsung Galaxy III. After updating my Thrill to ICS I now have a 4G symbol but I definitely do not have 4G performance. Are these phones capable of true 4G LTE or is it only AT&T HSPA+?
I'm rooted so I can make some manual tweaks if necessary. I noticed a throttle value in the settings.db. What should that value be for the best performance?
Thanks
Reading an old review of the phone on a site,it said the thrill 4g was not a true lte phone. Not sure if it's the hardware or the software. Good luck! What are you getting from speed test app?
Sent from my LG-P925 using xda app-developers app
Yeah.. I did some digging and it's not a LTE capable phone. I was hoping it was software based. AT&T official response was. It's a 4G phone that's not capable of 4G speeds. ??? Figure that one out..
My speed:
4 down and almost 1 up. Latency and jitter are 218 and 70ms. This seems to have gotten worse since the tower went to 4G.
My wifes phone:
18 down and 10 up. I expect this to get throttled at some point. Seems too good to be true. Her latency and jitter on the other hand is 70 and 12ms. Thought this should be better.

Sent from my HTC One VX using xda app-developers app
the weather icon is the the Wunderground app. i use it because it uses several weather station around my rural area to give me temps rather then interpolate from the bigger cities.
Look up the specs online for lg thrill. It only has an hspa+ radio in it. Think 24+ no LTE.

I hit this on XBSAVR3D based on Rogers V30C. Using the V30C baseband I hit almost 9mb down and almost 2mb up! That being said we can't get 4G, and that pretty lil 4G icon they put on our V30B update looks cool but its just eye candy full of lies. ATT said the Thrill is a 4G phone incapable of 4G speeds Didn't think that one through to well did they. Such crap.

I'm upgrading to a HTC One. The thrill has lost its thrill.
The thrill is a 4G phone. Just not 4G LTE. It uses HSPA+ which is a sorta 4G. Its a lot faster then 3G but not as fast as LTE.

I had one of the guys in my office run a Speed test on their newer phones hitting 12mb/sec with their LTE (spiked at 14mb). Honestly , i pay for 6Mbit at home. my phone is still faster.

Can we just flash the LTE Modem or will we have to get new phones?
our phones do not have the required hardware to go 4g. i could be wrong but i doubt it. but who cares, by the time at&t actually gets a real 4g, we should all be ready to upgrade.
LTE and HSPA are different. As long as HSPA is pushed then we can go to the max of the phones hardware.

Miami if you're not going to be helpful in Q/A then why post?
For 3G/4G you need to talk tech not blanket terms it would be easier to know what exactly you are asking.
HSPA+ LTE are the competeing tech one being a new tech (LTE) and one being an advancement of current tech (HSPA+).
Captivates can do um 7M using HSPA (double check gsm arena or the wiki or the manual for the numbers) so any upgrade to the network the device will top out at the max speed the device can support.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Max speeds for HSPA are theoretical. TMO said they would push it up to and over the 50M level while currently upgrades to networks have it at 14-21M though because of the way it works you will not get those speeds real world.

I doubt it 'cept the corporate AT&T people. They seem to be rolling them out 3-4 cities a year. So who knows. In OKC, it might be 3 months from now or 20 years from now.
The Thrill is not a LTE phone. The Thrill will never get LTE speeds. The 4G for the Thrill is HSPA+. The reason people call it faux G is that its not that much better than 3G. Check the coverage map online, you may already be getting 4G speed (according to att), and not know it. I saw an increase from my captivate to the Thrill, about 50% increase, but not enough to actually notice on a daily basis.
Att announced today their first LTE phones, skyrocket and vivid.

When you got the phone, did you just put the old sim card in from your old phone? That is what the at&t store did when I bought mine and I was not getting very good speeds. Went to the store around the corner from me and they replaced my old sim with one that said '4g' on it and the Rep said something about not getting hspa+ on the older Sims. Not sure about his reasoning, but I do get anywhere between 4-8mb down now. I can never seem to get over 1.08 up speeds though. It acts like there's a cap on it the way it is so consistent.

Just pulled it out and checked it. Plain AT&T sim. The one initially put in here was from my LG eXpo and came from my Incite from 2009. The Rep said that it needed a '4g' sim to actually get the speed. So he put a new one in. Can't complain as it worked.

Highly doubt it... Verizon is operating LTE on 700 mhz (the latest article I saw was that in 2015 they will plan to shift some EVDO to LTE on 1900). The Sprint HTC One only supports LTE on 1900.
Just because Sprint hasn't officially announced LTE in that area doesn't mean they haven't been doing the update. They have a ton of location that have spotty (and even complete) LTE coverage that aren't even officially on the LTE list.
The n.ispsn is something new also.

Force roaming causing 4G detection isn't anything new, actually. If you put the device into LTE mode only, it achieves something similar. The device would much rather stay on Sprint service if at all possible and will take a weak LTE signal if it can (even if it would normally prefer a nearby Sprint tower providing 3G coverage).
The speeds you've posted are in-line with a Sprint 4G test/slow rollout and would frankly be rather laughable on Verizon's 4G network-- if we get around the obvious hurtle that it is not physically possible for your phone to pick up Verizon's LTE, full stop.
Eliminate what's impossible (by hardware) and we have a series of at least possible alternatives.

Sprint 4G on initial release in an area or an a tower is very wonky. It's off and on, slow and only works at a short range. Just be patient and you will get it really soon. They just activated it in a couple areas where I live also. They tend to put them near Sprint Corp stores.

Why is it unbelievable that Sprint is bringing 4g to Arkansas... They HAVE TO do the NV update on every single tower that broadcasts Sprint Signal. It is cheap as dirt to just add the LTE hardware into the NV station once the NV upgrade is completed. This is a nation wide requirement since they are about to do some wonky ass things on the 1900 MHz PCS bands (when they start to reallocate their allowed bandwidth to different techs, it is an across the board FCC license).
I'm from Arkansas too and have been keeping up with the 4G there because that's where I travel to every chance I get. Jonesboro has sprint lte and it's been planned for little rock and Fayetteville to get it for months. It was only a matter of which day. I'm surprised it took them this long. But it was expected. I'm so happy to hear this wonderful news

31 up and 9 down eh? Damn that's a fast upload speed.
This pretty much mirrors my own observations. I don't think it's just the antenna either - if you toggle data, you can get 4G in a lot of places with marginal signal on the One. Once that drops down to 3G however, it will never go back to 4G in that area unless you toggle data again.
Enjoy your S4. I'm sticking it out with the One in the hopes that Sprint/HTC fix the radio so it holds on to 4G better.
HTC phones are notorious for having not so great radios. Not saying it's necessarily true, but each of you can be the judge of that.
The newest radio works perfect for me. Signal is strong and switch off between 3g wifi and lte are quick

I don't think thats true. To an extent, sure, but this phone is a lot like the EVO LTE. It has a hard time holding onto 4G and getting it to actually switch to 4G sometimes requires toggling airplane mode on and off.
Too bad the S4 sucks as a phone and has touchwhiz.

First, the HTC One is made from aluminum which can disrupt signal. However, on my HTC One I have always gotten LTE when I was suppose to. Signal strength compared to my family's phones HTC Evo 3d, iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3, and a HTC Evo 4g lte.
I went from htc one to note2. I seem to keep a better consistancy, but it isnt like a night and day
I tweaked my one setting to scan more so I was able to hold it more than stock. But it has improved. I do miss my htc one but still love my note2

I don't think there's anything wrong with the radios. Just that HTC uses different values on the LTE settings. I was comparing my EVO LTE and Note 2 LTE values and I believe the EVOs values were higher. I'm sure that plays a role..

At my work we have a very weak lte signal. Three of us have Sprint HTC ones, the rest has the s3, s4, and the Note II. The ones suck on weak lte signals. Constant drops, slower speeds, and according to the Signalcheck pro app, it's about ten dBm weaker. The note II is a beast on lte, and the s3 and s4 and much better as well.
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
I went from an original Evo 4G to the 4G LTE. This was weeks before the LTE rollout and it sucked. However, after roll-out, it still sucked. My wife got an S3 and her speeds were great, but more importantly, she could get (and keep) the LTE signal everywhere, whereas my EvoLTE could NOT. I went to the S3, then the Note 2 and had great speed and signal everywhere. However Samsung decided it did not want to support Outlook 10 anymore so I am back to HTC. My first day (yesterday) I was back to the HTC radios which cannot get and hold LTE signals as well as Sumsung.
It just is what it is.
