Screen broken? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A co-worker of mine gave me a touchpad he couldn't fix. He bought it for $50 because the seller said it was bricked.
The original owner said he replaced the battery so I am thinking that it is a hardware problem. Maybe he broke a connection or something?
CM9 was installed.
Here are the symptoms:
-When you turn it on you can see that the backlight is on even though it is a dark screen.
-You can only turn off the backlight by holding down the Power and the Home button.
-Every once in a while you get a vertical column of multi-color static off center to the right.
-Holding down the Power and Volume Up buttons doesn't have any effect
I took the TP completely apart, double checked all the connections when I put it back together.
If it is a software problem how do I unbrick it?
If it is a hardware problem which part needs replacing?

Does a computer sheet it at all? I would probably try the webos doctor program, but I'm just guessing.

Webos doctor doesn't see it. Windows tries to install a driver but it fails.

Ok, I got webos doctor to see it but after 8% of it's process it gives me the message "We were unable to reset your device"
Anyone ever see anything like this?

My guess is that the LCD needs replaced. I've never seen a bricked tp that had anything on the screen. Could be the LCD socket isn't connected all the way.

I thought that might have been the problem too. That is why I took it apart. I checked all the connections by taking them out and putting them in a securely as I could.
I'm thinking that the person who took the screen off the first time pulled the connector the wrong way and screwed up something.

Yeah that's pretty easy to do lol. I screwed up my digitizer control board and I've been working on em for a while.

Do you think that might explain why the back light turns on when it charges? I cannot get the back light to turn off. When I hold down the power and home button it turns off then comes right back a little later.

I helped replace a co workers iPod touch screen that was shattered & had to do it twice. The first screen we replaced we screwed up the ribbon connector and the screen looked very similar to yours. I bet all you have to replace is the LCD too. Good luck!

Bricked?

This morning i woke up, and my touchpad wont boot. It was on the charger all night.
The most i can get is 1 of 2 states
1.) Battery icon with a question mark
2.) Home/Center button has an alternating light going left and right
Ive tried Power + Home, and thats how i get between the two states, though its sorta random which one i end up in.
I cant get to USB/Download mode(Power vol up)
Is there anything else I can try?
I know you said you can't get into USB/Download but I'm not sure which method you've tried. Are you trying to hit vol up just after powering the device on? I've had better luck with turning it off completely, holding vol up, then connecting the USB cable from the computer.
Also, there seem to be several threads in the Q&A section with the same or similar problem. Have you read through those and tried any of those methods?

I have tried that. Ive googled as much as i can and i cant find what the "alternating left and right lights on the home button" mean. Turns out our home button is 2 LED's.
I havent found a success story related to the battery Icon question mark.

Does your pc see the tp if you connect it? If the home/center button is flashing it means you have power, so all is not lost (yet, at least). Did you have it charging on the wall charger or the touchstone. If the touchstone, try leaving it charging on the wall charger overnight. I hope this helps.

[Q] No Boot Brick, NOTHING Works.

So my dad picked up a Nexus 7 16GB about a month ago, and he didn't decide to root it or make any modifications to the system. He kept it in a case at all times, so i know its not a hardware problem, unless its the battery. We did open it up to check the battery, and it was all in place. The device will not boot, no matter what we do. When connected to the computer, it will not be recognized unless the power button is held for 10 seconds, and it will try to install an 'APX' driver. I looked into getting the universal naked driver for 'APX' but it installed it as a ASUS Transformer Prime. Im leaning towards sending it in to Google to get it fixed/replaced, but i wanted to know if there was anything I could do to fix this. All help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

[Q] HTC One, won't turn on..

To preface this, the phone is completely stock and unlocked. I've been using the phone now for about 3 weeks with absolutely zero problems. I plug it in to charge over night, wake up the next morning and it's completely unresponsive.
Won't turn on.
No LED notification light (Green or Amber)
Isn't recognised by my laptop as a disc drive either.
Any ideas, tips or suggestions as to how I can get it working again, short of calling the supplier and getting a replacement?
Thank guys.

It really is. I've already contacted my brother, whom is pretty high up in att, about the matter. I'd consider myself a veteran of android and I have had no progress on the fix, it seems only to be hardware. In layman terms, yes you'll have to get it replaced.

drop ship
When speaking to the HTC rep., try tossing around the phrase "can you drop ship a replacement phone?" Ask for a manager if its existence is denied. Once you find someone with enough power to "drop ship" the replacement phone, they'll take your credit card, then immediately send you the replacement phone and a box to ship back the defective phone. If you don't return the bad device, they'll charge your card.
happened to me twice - try holding power button for like 1min - it should turn on then
I opened a thread about this problem, but seems only some people have this defect.
I've had this problem too, it's currently with HTC (UK) to repair or replace. It arrived on Tuesday, still awaiting to hear back.

It seems that my phone isn't dead after all. Holding the power button down does seem to work... It's a strange bug..
I don't get why people turn the phone OFF in the first place? I never turn my phone OFF at all. I sometimes restart the phone but that is it.

[Q] Did my phone brick itself?

I flashed Paranoid Android after wiping ARHD 10.2, everything installed perfectly, phone was working great until I was listening to Pandora and checking Facebook..then my SIM card became unreadable and I had to take it out and put it back in, when I turned my phone back on it had gone from 42 percent battery to 4 percent, then 2, then dead. I charged it for a little while before going out for dinner, I came home and it wouldn't turn on, and it won't charge now whatsoever.
What the ****?
Alright, this will sound silly but place the phone in front of a light so that the sensor picks it up then try to turn it on. Will have to hold the power button for a while but it should turn back on. Or, if it won't, also try booting into your hboot. Reason for this is so you can't accidently turn on your phone in your pocket or something like that. It's been a while since I read this, I could be wrong but this won't hurt your phone so just give it a try

Yes, tried two chargers in two outlets along with USB only charging, none work. Both chargers worked this morning.
That happened to me today. Literally the exact same thing.
My solution:
Step 1. PANIC LIKE A MOTHA F******
Step 2. Contemplate spiking unibody sexiness into pavement because unibody is functionally retarded.
Step 3. Take a deep breath and remember why you love her...
Step 4. Hold down power button for 10 seconds or longer.
Step 5. Plug usb cable that came in your box into your device.
Step 6. Quit whimpering, people can hear you.
Step 7. Plug into PC. Watch for tiny red light at top of phone.
Step 8. Wait about 30 min.
Step 9. ??????
Step 10. PROFIT! !
Sent from my squash patch.
Followed your steps for 30 seconds of holding the power down, plugged in stock USB to phone, plugged into PC. Nothing. Black.
Sent HTC an e-mail, my phone shouldn't over-heat and brick while using Facebook and pandora and that's it. I'm about to swap this **** for a S4 and stop being a HTC fanboy. I'm upset.
Not every unit provided by manufacturer can be perfect. By the end of the day its electronics and something can go bad. If you feel s4 is better than get a s4. HTC One will be happy to leave you. I'm sorry for being rude and sarcastic but it is what it is.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
You shouldn't quickly jump to conclusions in my opinion. Just get a replacement set and see how it goes. If it still has problems then you can go for S4 or whatever device is out there. Of course in the end it's your decision but I'm just saying that you shouldn't cloud your decision just because of one defective set.

Makes me wonder if they didn't do something to the safe charging capabilities, although I would think that stuff is in the hardware, not the ROM.
It seems if it was the base that's being used we would have a LOT of devices going down so can't really speculate the cause. I shouldn't have posted above in such a suggestive manner.
I don't imagine the rom would be stopping the phone from charging as the kernel etc is not loaded until after hboot, charging is dealt with well before this sequence in the boot process.
To be fair it sounds like a hardware failure, maybe an overheating issue, possible caused by the rom and many other factors but that's the risk you take flashing experimental 3rd party software to your device. I don't thing you will ever know, your not even getting a uart mode which to me says fried PCB..
Send it in for repair and play dumb

[Q] Won't charge or power on (with links)

I hope I am not duplicating a thread, the XDA search function appears to be down at the moment. Last night I put my phone on the charger (OEM HTC charger); the battery was low, but the phone was still on, and it appeared to be charging. When I woke up this morning (late, since my phone acts as my alarm), my phone was turned off. Now I am unable to turn on the phone at all, and there is no orange charging LED. Unfortunately I don't have the money for a warranty exchange/replacement/repair (and probably won't for a while), so I will be without a mobile until this gets resolved. Please help, you guys are my only hope.
Steps I have tried:
Leaving the phone plugged in for a long while.
Holding vol up and power for several minutes.
Holding vol down and power for several minutes.
Holding vol up and down and power for several minutes.
Plugging it into a computer.
Using several different chargers.
Removing my SIM card, and trying all of the above again.

Unfortunately that doesn't appear to work for me. When you had to do this, was your device completely dead like mine, or were you able to see the orange charging light?
Just 2 days ago mine did nearly the same thing. It just seemed to run out of battery REALLY fast and wouldn't charge again until it completely ran out of battery. And then it wouldn't charge properly with any chargers, the led was flickering , cutting out then staying on for a few seconds etc. I left it overnight plugged in and it charged it finally me, but now my phone is going crazy.(270 rotation even when it's rotation locked, not recognising headphones or USB connection and more.) Maybe we both have faulty motherboards? I'm pretty sure mine isn't a software problem after numerous factory resets. I know this isn't really helpful but we're having a similar problem so if someone can help, this info could be useful? I just emailed HTC but I'm bootloader unlocked and running ARHD som I'm not that optimistic. They might try to blame that, even though I know it's not the problem.
Disappointing after 3 months of love and tender care that something like this goes wrong.
Um there might be 2 possibilityes:
1. Your phone is hard bricked (google it if you don't understand), witch may be caused by bootloader malfuncion while your phone was shutting diwn, in case that something might got corrupted
2. Hardware faliure. You might have something burned on your pcb, or you might have a dead battery

When I plug the phone into my PC, it now installs drivers for "qualcomm hs-usb qdloader 9008"; does this indicate a hard-brick? If so, I read somewhere else that if I used JTAG, I could potentially fix the phone. Is this a program that can be downloaded? If it helps, I do have one of SkOrPn's cables that I used a while ago to fix my Kindle Fire. T-Mobile is saying they won't do anything because the camera lens on the back has a small crack in it, even though they admit that it is unrelated to the issue at hand.

Thanks for the reply. I see that the tool they posted is for the AT&T Galaxy Note. Will this tool still work for the HTC One? I've got Linux machines available to use the tool if it will.
I had the phone for one month and it stopped charging. TMobile gave me a second charger at the store two weeks in since that's when it started. One month and a day after getting the phone it completely stopped charging. You had to rotate the cables in weird positions to get a charge. I think it's the USB connector on the phone or the battery. The store is mailing me a replacement for $20. IM using my backup S2 till then. I was rooted on Revolution the entire time. Suffice to say I think it's important to delicately remove the cable after charging. IM angry about this since I've had zero issues with my Samsung devices and thought I'd try the One.

I see, thanks for the help. Yeah I'm not very happy with T-Mobile right now. Basically, they won't even handle the repair/replacement because there is a small crack on the camera lens; I've spoken with two different representatives at T-Mobile who gave the same response. What's worse is that they admitted that it is obvious the cracked lens is completely unrelated to the fact that the phone won't boot. My next path is to interface directly with HTC to get it fixed, which is of course going to cost more money. If I at least had better coverage where I live and work, it might be a different story, but so far I've had nothing but bad luck with them. Once I can get out of this mess, I'll probably switch back to Verizon, and maybe give their Edge program a try. Sorry about the rant, but this is just getting silly.
