Nexus 7 32GB - Horrible speaker distortion - Nexus 7 General

My Nexus 7 has horrible speaker distortion on every piece of media as soon as I turn the volume above the 50% mark. The distortion gets worse closer to 100% and makes the speaker unusable at high volume. Is there any way I can fix this short of placing some bubble wrap under the speaker grille? I'm not prepared to do that since it'll void both my warranty and the 2-year insurance policy that I have on it.
Note: This seems to be ROM-independent - running both stock 4.2.2, stock 4.1.2 and Paranoid Android 3.0+ nightly seems to exhibit the same issues.

I had this problem. I just got a warranty replacement. There is a thread that says people were able to fix by removing the cover and pressing on the speaker. Didn't work for me.

Nexus speakers suck and blow, just like a shop vac.

I know NOTHING of this place, just happened to find it the other day. I plan on buying a new assembly for mine eventually, I have (temporarily) fixed them half a dozen times.

The same thing happened to mine last week. I messed around with it pressing on the speaker and it didn't seem to fix it. The next day I tried again and the "distortion" went away. If it happens again I will send it in for fixing.

Why would you send it in for 3+ weeks vs just buying a $12 speaker assembly?

Droid 4 Shutting Off Randomly

About a week ago my D4 started to randomly shut off. Opening the keyboard, using Dolphin, or just sitting in my pocket. I am unable to turn it back on without plugging it in to a charger, like it needs a jump or something. Once it fires back up, it says I have plenty of battery. The only other thing I see is when I plug it in but don't turn it on, it says it has 0-5% battery. It is rooted with safestrap and Eclipse installed but I've been running the stock version because some things weren't working quite right in Eclipse. Iv'e seen some posts say it could be a battery problem. Others say to factory reset or SBF. I'm going to give these a try but does anyone else have any ideas? I bought it off ebay a month ago and I'm worried they might not honor the warranty being purchased second hand. Luckily I still hadn't sold my trusty D3, but I dowant to get the D4 back in operation.
I've seen this problem with a few other of my older keyboard phones and it was always a hardware issue. I bet a ribbon has pressure applied to it so that the system briefly doesn't detect a battery...

I figured something like that. Weird thing is every once in a while if I plug it in to the charger it will show 5% battery, then go up to 10% after about 20 minutes, then suddenly shoot up to 100%. The phone would work fine off the charger for about a half hour then die, rinse and repeat. So it is charging but only like 5% then it will show 100%. I'm probably just going to bring it in and hopefully get a replacement.
Well I ended up calling Verizon and they are going to send a replacement, no questions asked. Apparently it doesnt matter if you bought the phone second hand, they will still honor the warranty (or I got just the right CSR). Case closed.
Really? They told me to f* off last time I called about warranty off a phone from cl... lol
I was guessing they were going to tell me to F off as well since most people were saying that's what they do when you try to get a warranty replacement on a second hand phone. It was literally the best experience I've ever had calling any customer service line. Told him my phone wouldn't stay on, he said he was going to talk to an engineer, next thing I know he's asking for my address. Win!
interesting.. will call tomorrow (my earpiece speaker crackles) >_>
Just got to get the right person to answer. My guy actually sounded like he was based in the US, not Kazakhstan. I told the person on the phone my story and that I had already gone to an authorized retailer (which I did) and that my phone wouldnt stay on. Put me on hold for a minute, came back and said were going to get a warranty replacement out. What may have helped is that I had my D3 active on my line and D4 was deactivated, so maybe they couldnt look up the info that would flag it as not from original buyer.

Mine does this too. Not all the time, just enough to irritate me. I've been putting off calling in to get a replacement because I'm worried whatever they send me will have more problems than just a crackling ear piece.

Whoops forgot to update. New phone definitely has less crackle. Old one was very noticeable, new one has little to no crackle. Only thing was it wasn't updated when I got it, had to manually go in and have it update to 219. I don't use the rear speaker very often but I don't remember it having a cracking sound. All in all there are no issues with it

My wife and I have both had Droid 4s since release day and aren't experiencing the issue.
I have had my droid 4 since the day it was released with no such problems. The only I can think that would cause speaker problems is if:
a) dust and gunk are getting stuck in the speaker
b) the connector for the speakers is becoming loose... do you ever try and clean around the edges of the phone, like in between the bezel and the frame? If so, you might be damaging a connector when you do so...
Other than that, maybe its a factory issue, it is a very thin top piece that holds the speaker and the screen, etc.
Hope this helps...

I started having this problem about 3 weeks ago and I've had my D4 for about 2 months.
Guess I need to call in for a replacement...what a pain. I used my OG Droid for almost 2 years without the need for a replacement. Then I picked up the D3 and went through about 6 phones in 6 months with a move to the D4 hoping things would be better.
What's the suck trick? My wife's is one day old and ear speaker sounds blown

suck trick
The suck trick is, if u suck on the speaker with your mouth it will temporarily fix the speaker.
Same issueI
I bought a Droid 4 two months ago and about within a month it started up with the same thing you are speaking of, a tinny, blown speaker sound coming from the ear piece. I did the whole sucking speaker deal and it would fix it , only to sound like junk again later. I returned it to Verizon, where they said that they had not heard of anyone else having the same problem, so Motorola sent me a "like new" Droid 4. I have had this phone for a month and just this morning it began with the blown speaker garbage again.
I looked more into it and read that it could be the glue which is holding the speaker in heats up and fails, causing the speaker to release from where it is seated and with that rattles, or vibrates, giving the effect of a blown speaker
This would make sense why by sucking into the speaker it stops, because you are basically popping it back into place temporarilly
Either way, I am returning this phone later today and plan on telling Verizon, I want a new one, not some "like new" refurbished piece of junk. I paid for a NEW phone, not one with problems motorola "fixed"
I hope all works out next, cause I really love the keyboard and could've gotten a Rzr for a few bucks more.

I believe this app is meant for the speaker on the phone, not the earpiece that people have problems with.

I just got a "like new" replacement phone for having the same problem. I had my phone for about five months before noticing a problem with the speaker. I had the same problem on four different DroidX phones. Verizon acted like it was such a big deal, and they'd never had any problems with the Droid4. The woman at the Verizon store tried to convince me that my Otter Box case was causing the problem. Verizon's customer service department is such a joke sometimes. So far so good with my replacement though.

if you make a call and run it it runs in the earpiece.
to clean it right
1wipe it off
2 clean it with a airduster if you got one
3 with a q tip and a little bit of alcohol
4 dry it than call you house and pick up the phone
5 than run the app incall 3x times
it should be good than
also in /settings/sound/speaker settings set it to custom turn off surround sound and turn the eq to bass punch or lower.

Earpiece too loud/distort/buzz

Long version:
Made my first call with the Nexus 4 yesterday. The call volume was surprisingly loud and it sounded distorted. I had to turn down the volume in order to not hurt my ear. Initially I thought I was having bad reception and so the call quality was bad. But after making a number of calls at different locations, I concluded that the earpiece will start to distort/buzz whenever the call volume is set above 50%.
Called Play customer service line today, explained the issue, and I was told that they had received a number of reports of the same problem. They quickly proceeded to send me a replacement as well as a UPS label for me to send the phone back after I got the replacement. They also told me that my replacement will arrive in 3-5 business days, so at least the replacement devices are not backordered.
TL;DR:
Contacted Play support, and I was told this is a known hardware problem. They immediately proceeded to send me a replacement. If you have this problem, RMA it.
I don't really understand the issue. If it too loud it distorts? Can you keep it at good listening level without it distorting?

Problem is what happens when the new one has the same problem? Mine has the hiss and buzz but I haven't RMA it yet

At max volume it's too loud, mostly too trebly. Above 50% it start to buzz/distort (not hissing noise), yet at 50% it's too quiet most of the time. Good listening level is around 75-80%, but it buzzes at this volume.
I agree, the earpiece is really loud but that's good thing. I hear everything loud and clear. This phone is perfect. The back speaker is surprisingly loud as well.

Same here is there a limit on the number of days after purchase where we can ask for a replacement or does it all fall under the 1yr warranty. I rather deal with Google and have them ship me a new phone rather than ask lg for a replacement
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
pretty sure RMA advance replacements are first 15 days. for the next year it is normal warranty you send it they assess weather repair or replace with new device. this is normal procedure with most companies HOWEVER! with google play i have heard of people getting advance replacements way after the 15 day period so not 100% sure.

The first 15 days is if you want a refund, I believe the RMA is covered under the 1 year warranty. Either way Google just sends replacements if there is a problem with the device.
If you guys have this problem down the line, don't worry too much. The earpiece is very easy to separate from the phone, and is on a plastic piece with the vibrator. Should be inexpensive on eBay, but RMA for sure if you are within warranty.
I bought two 16gb models, one sounds great, the other has horrible buzzing/distortion, especially at higher volumes. There's definitely a major difference, so I called google and they immediately offered to send me a replacement. I wonder how many phones have this problem?
Same problem here. Just called Google and they're sending a replacement. Hoping for a buzz-less phone this go around. Love the N4 otherwise.
I had the same issue, posted a thread about it, basically over time it "broke in" so before rushing to RMA I would put another hour or two of calls through the phone at a lower volume and go from there.
i can't say the same about mine. Earpiece seems just right when i turn the volume all the way up, and the speaker i wish was a little louder but it's ok. Buzzing in the earpiece is annoying. Not too loud, constant when the screen is on or off when next to my ear during conversations. None of my phones buzz like that. Nice work, LGoogle.
Same here, one good other is going back to google
I'm still waiting for my replacement.
Today was the first time plugging in a pair of headphones to my N4 and I notice static noise that many have mentioned....
For those who have problems with the earpiece, do you also have this problem with the headphone jack? Are they somehow related?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
On my device no buzzing noises.
However earpiece (and speaker) are loud.
For me this is more of an advantage coming from I9100 where I had to ask people to speak loud finally a device to I can hear them!
waiting for my replacement as well. sucks because everything was perfect EXCEPT for the earpiece.
it sounds as if the earpiece speaker is over tuned, making for a buzz everytime the opposing party speaks.
In the same boat here. Ordered two, one is fine, the other has the buzzing earpiece. Mine buzzes no matter what the volume is.
Would I have to wait 6 weeks for a replacement? I have the earpiece problem but I don't wanna wait that long

I had the same issue w/ no insurance. I called sprint and the gave me HTC's # and I got it fixed without paying. It took about 10 days.
My top speaker is blown as well. It has been for months. I took it to Sprint and was told they would need the phone for 2 hours to do a "software test." I didn't have time to leave it or wait but WTF is the need anyway. You can tell it's blown by turning up the volume or playing a ringtone. Oh well. I'll take it back eventually.
I was able to walk in to my store, while running CM 10.2, turn up a song and they immediately ordered me a new phone. I gave them my old one still running CM and nobody batted an eye.

Audio only from top speaker

Hi, I've been using a galaxy s6 but wanted to try the Nexus 6 since has stock Android and bigger screen. But... audio like You Tube, Play movies, Music, everything comes from top speaker grill, not both, I thought this phone has stereo speakers. Is it like that by default or would I have to replace the bottom speaker? Also I can't get text messages notification, always quiet no matter which sound I choose. I get phone ringtones and media but not messages tone. I'm stock right now but was doing same thing with PureNexus rom. Thanks.
If you just got it return it. This is a problem with some N6 phones along with static during calls. I had to return mine about a year ago for both. The new phone has been perfect.

I got it on craigslist and can't get a hold of the guy either, I'll learn from this one. Thought about trying to fix it since parts are kind of cheap and it seemed it's not that hard taking it apart. Thank you for responding.
I get this issue on my N6 sometimes. A restart would fix the issue. I don't know if it's the same case with yours.
