Sorry for the n00by question guys! I had a g1 at first and i thought it was broken so I had to get a cliq from tmobile. but i found a way to fix the g1 but i rooted it to use as my experiment phone since i got the cliq. well, after 2 weeks the cliq is starting to be a nuisance. there's "dead spots" in the touch screen because of calibration issues, it's very buggy and i just don't really like it.
sorry for the tangent, i just wanted to share the background of why i was going back to my g1 that i rooted.
so, will a tmobile rooted g1 work with the android data plan? If anyone is wondering I have the MLIGN Hero 3.3 rom on the phone, that won't affect anything will it?
p.s.
thanks so much for the help, i know that this is a very n00b question, but i greatly appreciate the help that will come from you guys.
Nope. Im pretty sure everything will stay the same.
Been switching roms for months now and havent seen any changes to my data plan
NOTHING WILL HAPPEN IF YOU SWITCH ROMS. I been switching ROMs like I will try 3 ROMs a day then use a backup to go to a stable ROM.
With some ROMs to get data you need to put in the correct APN settings so don't freak out if a ROM doesn't support t-mobile's apn for some reason.
wow thanks for quickly replying guys! i didn't check till now because i didn't think i was gonna get anything so soon. I appreciate it :] and thanks for toning down my paranoia haha.
@AndroidNoobie: thanks for letting me know about the whole APNs thing. I would ask you about it right now but i'll use the search tab first if anything pops up, thanks again!
np dude glad to help.
I apologize in advance for not researching this properly myself (in fact I'm usually doing stuff like this for other people), but I am simply overwhelmed by the plethora of information and unlimited posts of ROMs, OC kernels, and all that. I am no longer android retarded; That's for sure.
But I have a busy weekend here looking for an apartment and moving, and I just don't have the time (really) to sift through all this stuff! There's just too much! But in the meantime, the lag I am experiencing on the Hero is pissing me the **** off and I know it can be better, even "snappier" at 768.
I was hoping you guys would be able to give you opinion at the very least on this. I really wish you could just flash once and have everything set-up, but that would be too convenient. I would have to make sure the kernel doesn't break functionality, that the kernel actually works with the rom in the first place, flash the kernel, find a matching wifi module to match the damn kernel, flash the damn module... you get the picture.
So please guys, help me out here! I AM overwhelmed in every sense of the word, and I need your help.
1. Opinions on most stable ROM with most features.
2. Recs for an OC Kernel that will work with it!
3. The wifi module to go along with it.
4. Anything else I'm forgetting...
Thanks in advance and I apologize again for not doing it on my own. I just can't...lol.

Word - subscribed. Just bought a Hero for my gf, trying to get it proper, but man, I used to do this with HTC WinMo phones, and this is the exact reason I went to iPhone platform - too much reading, maintenance, reflashing etc (read: TIME) to get the phone to work the way you want. So, I opted to just lose any choice or control over the matter and have a phone that works fine enough and has good app ecosystem
But, I want to get her phone at least fast and stable (most important), I think I'm throwing 2.1 with the .6 update, and will just downgrade to root in the future if we really need wifi tether.
If there is some good info in this thread on which ROM and which kernel with minimum hackish patches etc to make it all work, then I'll go to that! I'm hoping someone just finds a root exploit for .6 since it seems there are some good lag fixes in that update as well.

So is the method to root on 2.1 .5 version and then install this ROM over the top (which keeps your root)?
yep, you got it
Wow..
So I finally got some time to do even minimal research and came across these:
ZenHeroFX 2.0 ROM
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731951
Darchstar's Kernels
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
I wiped everything (including battery *whatever*), flashed the rom, flashed the 768MHZ kernel, flashed the % battery meter, and the 2.0 update for the ROM. I never expected it to boot the first time... BUT IT DID! Holy ****! Really?
Now, after setting frequency with SetCPU this thing flies! I cannot describe the difference. Holy ****-BALLS! Finally no lag at all, not even at the keyboard. And no overheating. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect flash!
DrunkenOstrich: This is the perfect setup for you! It worked the first try for me with no issues at all. Just follow the directions step-by-step and you will be good! Also, don't trip out on how long it takes to boot or if it's slow at first. Give it a few minutes to sync up and everything will be badass.
God I feel like such a noob after proofreading this post. lol.
wow... thanks
Ok... thank you so much for doing this. I am in the same boat as you as far as time to research everything goes. I had rooted my 1.5 hero last november and recently upgraded to 2.1. Just reverted to .5 so I could root but was totally lost as far as what ROM would keep me as close to stock as possible.
My goals were to find a ROM that allows me to 1)remove some bloatware, 2) overclock, 3) possibly wifi tether and 4) further improve battery life. I just didnt want to lose any functionality since I really love the hero. Only thing is since this upgrade, it's a slug. OP, Do you think using the ROM/Kernel pair you installed I'd be happy considering my goals?
there's one good way to find out. if you don't like it you can always do a nandroid.

agreed... going to root later on tonight and i'll try both... looking forward to no more lag and some fresh new changes to the UI
Thought I would get more of a performance boost... installed SetCPU and tweaked some settings and its a little better

...I lucked out and got a brand new one with 1.0.0 firmware, so I stuck with it and used the AutoNooter for that version, then blocked B&N from pushing updates. I have the whole thing running basically how I want it to now and I'm very happy, but I have one burning question:
Is it worthwhile to overclock it and would that really enhance my user experience at this point? I've never overclocked anything before and the last thing I want to do now, after all the tweaking I did and money spent, is to destroy the little guy.
So, experts hereabouts:
Given my hardware, firmware, etc., do you think it's safe and worth the effort to use a kernel to push it to 1.1Ghz or 1.0Ghz? Are these kernels stable or am I going to regret it when something really wacky happens?
I keep mulling it over, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Most people seem to report that 950 Mhz is tops for 2.1 (the android version currently on your nook). It highly unlikely that it will harm the hardware and you will see a modest increase in performance.
For 2.2 and 2.3 (CM7) people are going as high as 1.1 GHz without issue. I'm currently at 1 Ghz and am enjoying it. No problems (knock on wood).
Thanks for the response! I was also concerned that staying at 1.0.0 was unwise or that, perhaps, I should try using Android 2.2, but that all seemed to be fairly experimental/scary to me.

I have only had my NC for a little over a week now and have had all the popular roms installed. I have tried CM7, Froyo and Honeycomb. It's all pretty easy just make sure you read all the install instructions and you should be fine. Also I made nandroid backup as well as a titanium pro backup of my apps. So it is pretty easy to revert back to my stock rom if I wanted. My suggestion is to read through the threads for all the different roms in the development section, it will give you a good grasp of how to install and what bugs are still existing. A good start for you is to get titanium backup and rom manager so you can do the backups first then start experimenting to see what you like.
From my limited testing I don't think CM7 and Honeycomb are quite ready yet, they still need a couple things worked out which I am sure will happen soon especially with the SDK released for Honeycomb now. I liked Honeycomb the best but a couple apps I use regularly wouldn't run for me at the present stage(Aldiko and IMDB, I didn't try much else as I really use those apps alot and couldn't live without them). As for CM7, everything I tried worked well but the battery drain seemed rather high for my liking compared to stock. I am now running Froyo customized 0.6.8ver2, I loaded it on last night so haven't had much time to play around with it yet but so far it seems to run pretty well, all apps I have tried work. Not sure on the battery drain yet but will keep an eye on it.
If you need some help let me know, I am not an expert but haven't bricked my NC yet and I don't mind helping out where I can.

Thanks a ton, Kevin! This seems like a really nice community. I'm going to keep researching and see what I can conclude. I made a back-up with Clockwork the other day just in case something weird happened, so I'm weighing out the pros and cons while sifting through these threads. Honestly, I don't have a problem with how things are running now, but making a little snappier, in the parlance of the boards, would be nice. I wonder if there's a way I can up the performance without overclocking it?
Also, this is the method I used to block B&N updates:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946969
It seems there was a bit of debate as to if this would actually do the trick, so I'm kind of worried. My NC has been connected to wifi constantly since day one, so I don't know if this is/isnot working. Anyone have any advice in this regard or experience? How do updates get pushed?

Hey Junkrobot - Just take your time. It takes a little while to get a feel for things. I have been rooting and installing roms on Android phones since they came out. At first, I would worry a lot but as I gained experience, I felt more comfortable. Now I think I enjoy trying ROMs more than actually using the device like a normal person.
The Nook Color is a great device to get started because it boots from the sd card which means it is nearly impossible to brick. If something gets messed up, you can always boot from a bootable sd card and install a rom or restore a backed up image. That said, if you enjoy the device as it is, there is no rush to upgrade.
I think part of my anxiety is just the sheer amount of time it took me to get things in order since I was so new at it. Day one was pretty stressful, as I'm sure it was for most folks.
Just an FYI, the Nook is really hard to brick since it boots up first from the SD card. You can always make a CWR card which should allow you to flash it back to stock or another ROM.
Does backing up in Clockwork also preserve my apps and settings?
I'd be really stoked if I could also somehow be sure that OTA can't push an update on me. In my mind, B&N is out there, waiting to strike.
No, use Titanium Backup or MyBackUp
Im buying a new NC of craigslist today. I want to make it into an andriod tablet. I just want to know if i should watch the youtube videos for it, or maybe go through a forum on here.
Not sure what the best is right now. Any help is appreciated!!!
Thanksss
Congrats!
this was the way i rooted my NC and it was way easy.

btw im running cm7 and loving it
Video might be good to get a visual idea of what to do, but I suggest reading up as well. It's been a while since I rooted and there seem to be slightly different methods to get what you want on there. I started off just updating and rooting stock, that's pretty painless and simple if you've never done any sort of flashing. Then you can try out dual booting or CM7 or whatever you feel. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!
I have been looking for a couple hours. I apologize if you can go out there and find the answer in seconds. I am not that great with searching forums.
I am looking to get single digit increments for my battery, and to put that in the status bar if possible to replace the battery icon already or to accompany it. I have found many of the mods that were out there before the ICS leaks came out. I am on the .232 ICS, rooted, ... I don't want to say stock, but for lack of a better term, I'm stock leak, if that makes sense. I'm not custom ROM, no MODS of any sort, I use a lot of apps and for the most part I have only put mods in on my Xoom, so I can do it, but haven't on this phone.... I'm thinking that's all the information you would require to help me out...
Also, if anyone has applied the older mods successfully, which ones did you use?
Thanks
EDIT - As of right now, I'm going to pick my favorite battery mod and see if it works... wish me luck!
Attempt one was a failure... Sorry to the guys who made these, but I gotta report what happens for others...

FINAL EDIT - Okay, so for some reason I can't seem to get back into CWM I can only get to stock recovery mode right now, so I'm going to fix it but I don't want to do that more than once, so I will be patient and hope for an answer.
I just want to say thanks for taking the dive first and then keeping us updated, im having the same luck too, you would think it would be an easy tweak but then again im not a programmer!

If your on completely stock 232 and your familiar with boostrap you can download and install chronic rom without wiping and loosing data. It is a deodexed stock rom and includes 1% battery mod along with a few apps and build prop mods for speed. I got it at droidhive before it got hacked but you can get it here at rootzwiki. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28127-ro...nks-in-op-updated-dailyformerly-whats-in-dev/ hope this helps.
