I have been looking for a couple hours. I apologize if you can go out there and find the answer in seconds. I am not that great with searching forums.
I am looking to get single digit increments for my battery, and to put that in the status bar if possible to replace the battery icon already or to accompany it. I have found many of the mods that were out there before the ICS leaks came out. I am on the .232 ICS, rooted, ... I don't want to say stock, but for lack of a better term, I'm stock leak, if that makes sense. I'm not custom ROM, no MODS of any sort, I use a lot of apps and for the most part I have only put mods in on my Xoom, so I can do it, but haven't on this phone.... I'm thinking that's all the information you would require to help me out...
Also, if anyone has applied the older mods successfully, which ones did you use?
Thanks
EDIT - As of right now, I'm going to pick my favorite battery mod and see if it works... wish me luck!
Attempt one was a failure... Sorry to the guys who made these, but I gotta report what happens for others...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274095&highlight=battery+percentage - Do not use... Result: Bootloop
FINAL EDIT - Okay, so for some reason I can't seem to get back into CWM I can only get to stock recovery mode right now, so I'm going to fix it but I don't want to do that more than once, so I will be patient and hope for an answer.
I just want to say thanks for taking the dive first and then keeping us updated, im having the same luck too, you would think it would be an easy tweak but then again im not a programmer!

If your on completely stock 232 and your familiar with boostrap you can download and install chronic rom without wiping and loosing data. It is a deodexed stock rom and includes 1% battery mod along with a few apps and build prop mods for speed. I got it at droidhive before it got hacked but you can get it here at rootzwiki. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28127-ro...nks-in-op-updated-dailyformerly-whats-in-dev/ hope this helps.

Hi guys. Hopefully this is the correct board to post in. I'm a former fan of CyanogenMod. I used the old CyanogenMod builds that ran Android 2.1, but when 2.2 came out, I jumped to a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
After trying CyanogenMod 6, I'm pretty disappointed. It felt much slower than stock, and it no longer had the CyanogenMod feel.
Anyhow, are there any developers that actually make clean and stable ROMs? With every N1 ROM I've looked at, the developers seem obsessed with changing the Android GUI around, and not adding more important features.
There really seems to be no ROM that keeps the default Android GUI look and feel, but adds things like a percentage in the battery icon, a white-on-black Messaging app tweak, and some of the under-the-hood performance tweaks.
Maybe I'm just angry, and maybe no one shares the same sentiments as me, but I'm just curious to hear back from others. Am I going to have to bake my own ROM to get what I want?
Thanks in advance anyone who took the time to read my rant.
Edit: I wanted to note, after seeing a friend's Motorola Droid with the BuglessBeast 2.2 ROM on it, that looks like almost exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, that seems to be a Droid-specific ROM.
Push Mms.apk from latest CM6.0.0-RC1 to whatever ROM you wish, and you got the black background in MMS.
There are some close-to-stock ROMs, like Geo411m's.
Personally, I use LeoFroyo with black bar until CM supports SD-EXT in framework, that would be a good enough reason to switch. I'm already tempted to switch to have browser enhancements, but I don't feel it's a good enough reason by itself. For some reason, Browser.apk crashes when pushed, probably has some CM-only framework dependencies.
I'm a fan of Kang o Rama
I'm really liking Geo411m's ROM, aside from the trackball-unlock (no way to disable it as far as I can find?).
Maybe I should just learn to bake my own ROMs-- I don't really want much past the stock ROM, just a couple things, really.
There wouldn't happen to be any informative threads on how to do so? I looked around but couldn't find much.

There is no one ROM that is perfect for everyone. Maybe you guys are new to Android and this is your first device. Maybe you've just been spoiled with the variety of developer support... but most of us former G1 owners who rooted were very adept at picking bits from various ROMs and pushing those bits into a developed ROM that was already largely what we were looking for. I remember downloading and pulling out frameworks, changing icons, pulling/pushing apps, etc. That way, you end up with EXACTLY what you want. Perfect example... I was reading comments on Engadget to Cyanogen's latest Froyo build for the G1, and some ass complained about the "ugly" rounded notification bar. All he has to do is push over one or two files from any of a gazillion other ROMs and he'd have his original notification bar back.
Think of custom ROMs as a starting point... and then find and push the parts of other ROMs that you really like over a good custom ROM. You'll learn a lot and end up self-sufficient. You'll probably also feel very proud of doing some of the work personally.
ummm, what exactly is wrong with MoDaCo ROMs? modaco's philosophy is being as close as possible to a stock ROM, with just a few improved tweaks. modaco ROMs are like stock ROMs. you tried this?

Try Modaco's roms, their basically stock, just rooted. His was the first one I tried, but I switched to evil because I like black status bar and theme. Modaco's roms are not themed, and the same way stock is set up his is set up, nothing extra. If I did'nt like my roms themed, I would definitely rock one of his for sure.
Using geomod411's rom myself. Added a2ext support and it's all good. It's practically stock so I'll be looking to add things like black mms later.

I tried this but it didn't work. I had to push it from Recovery because when the phone was on I kept getting an error about it being read-only.
adb push Mms.apk /system/app/Mms.apk
Worked in recovery... but my text messaging interface has not changed. It's still the stock/white.
EDIT: Did it a ghetto way. Used Root Explorer, removed /system/app/Mms.apk -- then installed the Mms.apk that I pulled out of the CM6 zip. That worked.
Are you seriously complaining about Cyanogens CM6 RC1?... You do know what RC1 means right?
Anyway, CM6 is the best release of 2.2 for N1 out there.. it's just in a working stage now and there are allot of things to fix... that's why it is a Release Candidate... and it was in Alpha testing not long ago.
If you want a clean and simple go back to stock...

I apologize in advance for not researching this properly myself (in fact I'm usually doing stuff like this for other people), but I am simply overwhelmed by the plethora of information and unlimited posts of ROMs, OC kernels, and all that. I am no longer android retarded; That's for sure.
But I have a busy weekend here looking for an apartment and moving, and I just don't have the time (really) to sift through all this stuff! There's just too much! But in the meantime, the lag I am experiencing on the Hero is pissing me the **** off and I know it can be better, even "snappier" at 768.
I was hoping you guys would be able to give you opinion at the very least on this. I really wish you could just flash once and have everything set-up, but that would be too convenient. I would have to make sure the kernel doesn't break functionality, that the kernel actually works with the rom in the first place, flash the kernel, find a matching wifi module to match the damn kernel, flash the damn module... you get the picture.
So please guys, help me out here! I AM overwhelmed in every sense of the word, and I need your help.
1. Opinions on most stable ROM with most features.
2. Recs for an OC Kernel that will work with it!
3. The wifi module to go along with it.
4. Anything else I'm forgetting...
Thanks in advance and I apologize again for not doing it on my own. I just can't...lol.

Word - subscribed. Just bought a Hero for my gf, trying to get it proper, but man, I used to do this with HTC WinMo phones, and this is the exact reason I went to iPhone platform - too much reading, maintenance, reflashing etc (read: TIME) to get the phone to work the way you want. So, I opted to just lose any choice or control over the matter and have a phone that works fine enough and has good app ecosystem
But, I want to get her phone at least fast and stable (most important), I think I'm throwing 2.1 with the .6 update, and will just downgrade to root in the future if we really need wifi tether.
If there is some good info in this thread on which ROM and which kernel with minimum hackish patches etc to make it all work, then I'll go to that! I'm hoping someone just finds a root exploit for .6 since it seems there are some good lag fixes in that update as well.

So is the method to root on 2.1 .5 version and then install this ROM over the top (which keeps your root)?
yep, you got it
Wow..
So I finally got some time to do even minimal research and came across these:
ZenHeroFX 2.0 ROM
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731951
Darchstar's Kernels
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
I wiped everything (including battery *whatever*), flashed the rom, flashed the 768MHZ kernel, flashed the % battery meter, and the 2.0 update for the ROM. I never expected it to boot the first time... BUT IT DID! Holy ****! Really?
Now, after setting frequency with SetCPU this thing flies! I cannot describe the difference. Holy ****-BALLS! Finally no lag at all, not even at the keyboard. And no overheating. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect flash!
DrunkenOstrich: This is the perfect setup for you! It worked the first try for me with no issues at all. Just follow the directions step-by-step and you will be good! Also, don't trip out on how long it takes to boot or if it's slow at first. Give it a few minutes to sync up and everything will be badass.
God I feel like such a noob after proofreading this post. lol.
wow... thanks
Ok... thank you so much for doing this. I am in the same boat as you as far as time to research everything goes. I had rooted my 1.5 hero last november and recently upgraded to 2.1. Just reverted to .5 so I could root but was totally lost as far as what ROM would keep me as close to stock as possible.
My goals were to find a ROM that allows me to 1)remove some bloatware, 2) overclock, 3) possibly wifi tether and 4) further improve battery life. I just didnt want to lose any functionality since I really love the hero. Only thing is since this upgrade, it's a slug. OP, Do you think using the ROM/Kernel pair you installed I'd be happy considering my goals?
there's one good way to find out. if you don't like it you can always do a nandroid.

So, I'm not a complete noob, been flashing roms since around February.
I do however have a noob-ish question, that I've put off asking for awhile now, in hopes that I would find an answer first!
I absolutely adore Cezar's roms (I wonder if he's single... oh wait, wrong forum) and I like Serendipity VII as well.... but neither seem to have the battery life that GR-12 does on my phone. (definitely more than 18-20 hrs)
So, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions and or first hand on this? I want to rock Continuum, but battery life is important for me... sometimes at work without the opportunity to charge.
I like GR-12 also, don't get me wrong... but the newer stuff comes with bells n whistles.... and yet, that damned battery gets in the way!
Thanks!

Wrong forum????
there are little things you can do to help save battery life and also apps in the market to aid with this sort of thing. I don' think your gonna be able to have the rom of your choice with the battery life of your choice .. how sweet that would be though.
Some kernels allow for UV and that will save you a little battery.. also make sure you don't have a lot of apps running at once.. or you status bar only has icon's up there that need to be.
Thanks Corey!!!
Hello everyone,
It's nice to have a reason to be back in xda.
So recently I traded my iphone 4s for an LG Thrill + $150. So naturally, I made out of the deal. Anyway, upon receiving the phone, I noticed Superuser in the app drawer. Now I have never rooted an android before, so I would very much appreciate if someone could walk me through on how to do it, or link me to a thread that may explain it. The reason I am making my own thread about this is because Id also like a few questions answered if possible.
First of all, I want to unroot because I'm not sure if the previous owner installed any kind of tracking software on the phone, unlikely, but you never know. Also because I figure I will have to do it to update to ICS when it gets released for the Thrill. So I guess one of my questions are how do I tell what kind of stuff is installed on my phone from a rooted perspective. I noticed that for one unroot you need to have cwm installed, and i don't know how to go about to see if it is. I don't see it in the app drawer, so I'm not sure. Like I said, Ive never owned a rooted android before, only my jailbroken iphones.
Another question I had is that when I signed into my android email (I previously owned a motorola Xoom) it released an arsenal of unwanted emails and contacts into my phones contacts, I'm going to imagine there is a setting in the settings to untoggle this, and I will try to hunt it down, but if anyone could give me a heads up on where it is, thatd be ridiculously awesome.
Then another thing id like help with, is since im late in the game with the Thrill, maybe you could post any interesting threads youd think a newbie would like to see. I will spend my own time looking over xda (so please don't come in here and hate on me and tell me to look for it myself) I just figured you kind people that are in here a couple times a week would already know of some great stuff I could look at. It does get time consuming reading through the Troll posts and whatnot.
Anywho, Thanks for your time and I'm looking forward to talking to you all in the coming days!
If anyone could help me, I have never been rooted like stated, and I'm just trying to gushed what I should do. I found out he used super one click method to root. And I see superuser in the apparently drawer, but I don't see clockwork recovery at all (and I don't even know what that is/does, but I know its important.) If anyone could just start a dialogue with me to help me get some of this figured out I'd be very appreciative. I just don't want to ultimately brick my phone.
Sent from my LG-P925 using XDA App
I would check to see if clockwork mod recovery is installed first. If it is, then just install a different rom and you will know that any tracking stuff the previous user may have installed is gone.
To check for clockwork recovery, power your phone down completely. Hold the volume down button and the 3d button down, then press the power button until the phone vibrates and starts booting. If the phone boots normally, you don't have clockwork recovery. If you do have clockwork recovery, then install a custom rom from the development section and you're on your way. I like thriller and doomed froyo.
Enjoy!

Yes! I booted into an android recovery system, so I'm taking that I do have certain thanks, now I will have to look into the Roms.
Two side questions though, I will have to unroot before ICS right?
And when I turned off and booted like you said, once I got into the recovery attempt I just rebooted again, my battery was at 70 percent before the initial reboot and somhow now displaying it at 26 percent. Any ideas on that? I'm going to reset again to see if it drags back up. I am confused
EDIT: After turning it off on the battery is still reading in the twenty percent. I know for a fact that it should be up in the sixty seventy range. Does loading into recovery really destroy your battery like that? I had already done a full life cycle on the battery so I can't imagine that the batteries the issue

So I just removed then replaced the battery and now its reading at 35 percent. Is this normal?

Hey... haven't been checking this forum for a few days. It sounds like your battery stats are hosed. In cwr there is an option to wipe battery stats. That should do the trick.
You do not need to un-root in order to install a custom rom. The only thing to watch out for is what baseband the rom was developed for. The thrill ships with "froyo", Google's android 2.2 operating system and that's the only OS version that the baseband will function with. It is possible to flash the baseband from another country where "gingerbread" (2.3) has been released. Unfortunately this means that you may lose quite a bit of functionality on your phone. This is because the frequencies used in the country where that baseband was used are different. You are pretty much guaranteed to lose 4g and might get horrible signal on 3g.
Personally I will be waiting for at&t to roll out gingerbread for the thrill before I go down that path. You can still flash froyo based roms like Thriller and Doomed Froyo. Look for them in the "android development" subforum here.
Good luck!

It may be that the stats are shot, or it may be a glitch that (I think) the Thrill has. I remember reading at one point that simply turning the phone on and off would drain 10-20% of its battery, and mine has seemed to do the few times that I actually watched it... It's really annoying when you just want to restart the phone to apply something and then have to live with a smaller battery life for the rest of the day.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input, and I will check that out in clockwork recovery.
I was worried about unrooting to install ics when it comes out, but I figure that may be a year or so :rolls eyes: but i think I found the forum for unrooting in the development section.
Also thanks for the warning on the baseband, I'm really glad I haven't gotten around to putting a rom on my thrill because I was looking at a gb one. You just saved my phone!

I realise this wont answer your question but it might help you in a general since. I was in your position few months ago. I did play with roms some. I found what worked for me was ordering a higher capacity battery (link found in the accessory section), and the Doomed Froyo rom. Gave me the control I was used to from jailbreak ios and the extra battery life helps. Do a few searches for essential root apps before you play with roms. You need basics like root file explorer and titanium backing and so on. Enjoy your thrill

Hello xda. I've been a big selfish user of the stuff provided here for a while, as have many. I own an XPERIA X8 and it's the best phone I've ever owned (ehem.. perhaps because it's the first smartphone I've ever owned). I just wish it was a little better. I enjoyed the stock stuff for a while until my internal storage filled up too much, then I rooted and upgraded it to an easy to install Froyo ROM as it was my first time doing such things (as good as I am with programming PC's, I thought I would surely screw that up). It was great and had kept me happy for over a year, but I didn't realise how old Froyo was until I heard about Jellybean and 'Project Butter' and how it even outperforms old versions of Android. I've been limited in Froyo to relatively basic stuff anyway so I thought since I'd basically installed an android version only one step up from the stock Eclair, there'd be a lot of better versions out there.
This is where my nightmare begun. Since I already had xRecovery, I thought the process would be as simple as "download rom, install in xRecovery". A bit too ambitious, I ended up "soft bricking" my phone and having to fix it by going back to Eclair. Then, somehow, I could not even root the damn thing under the guidance of any tutorial. It's like it suddenly caught an immunity. After ages of meddling I managed to do so and get to the next step. Then the problem occurred that Superuser wasn't kicking in and allowing anything root access. I also had problems getting a new kernel on the phone and ended up only managing to install some random kernels I wasn't even sure supported the rom I was trying to install. I had some more problems trying to install CWM and it was around then I noticed another occurring problem. Apparently for installation of Jellybean, I needed to unlock bootloader, which apparently can't be done on devices with a certain version of motherboard. Mine is 11W41. I heard that this sometimes doesn't matter depending on the specific version, but after all the problems and reading up how hard it would be to recover from a problem if it occurred. So after a long time not finding alternate solutions, I decided to go for something lower.
Ice Cream Sandwich apparently had a similar problem, but I didn't spend long looking (by that time it was really late at night and I just wanted to at least get rid of Eclair again). Eventually I installed Gingerbread, which managed to work well... the second time I tried. The first time I mucked something up and ended up going back to Eclair yet again. Well, now I at least have the GingerXperia Revolution V3 rom installed, but I'm still wondering if this is the best I can do according to the X8. So yeah, that's the rant of my nightmarish story, but this is, ehem, a Q&A... so my question is, before I get too settled with my current phone set-up, is there any better option for my phone? Have I misunderstood some things and I actually do have a way of updating my kernel in order to install a better rom? From a rom, I obviously just want a well-packed version of android (Froyo was way to simplistic, having very few options to improve the experience), which is fast and suitable for every day use. As a bonus I would like it to be swappable so I can increase the RAM with SD memory and increase internal storage size (even with the ability to move apps to the SD, the phone fills up way too fast). I'd be very surprised if I've managed to pick the best way to upgrade my phone.
I know this heavily depends on opinion, so I just want to hear it. If there is better things I can do to it, I could do with a point in the right direction!
i honestly read that long post. welcome to xda mate.
tbh, i haven't tried that particular rom yet. so i can't tell you rom is "better" (which is subjective, if you ask me), so i'll try to answer the other points in your post.
since you have a locked bootloader, we're limited to roms, apps, and tweaks. a different kernel would do wonders to your phone, but since that's out of the question i think the best way to go is how to improve performance using other methods. please note that whatever i write here is my opinion. other users may think differently.
apps: i use mounts2sd for swap and a better alternative to our native app2sd feature. greenify is another app that is getting great reviews, though i try to not use task killers as much as i can. if you're into mobile gaming chainfire 3d is another app you could use.
tweaks: crossbreeder and v6 supercharger. i've personally used (using CB right now) try them and see. remember to make a backup to be safe.
that's all i can think of in short notice. i'm sure there are others and you just need to look in xda more. also, try a couple of roms before you get settled on one.

Maybe I was feeling sociable and friendly and wanted to share my story? Why made you think that you needed to quote and bolden it?
And what do the threads and search functions have to do about anything? Im asking for help specific to my phone and what I've done to it, so unless you're gonna help I just dont see the logic in going into all this effort to reply to my topic. I mean really, don't bother, I'm not worth it...
@cascabel
Installed that mounts2sd but on launching it I got a message about root permissions not being granted. It's a common problem I'm noticing. Only some apps achieve root access. I think the problem might be to do with an outdated SU binary, but the topic for the ROM said not to update it after installing. I updated it beforehand but the ROM must have its own binaries or something.

you asked for some help...but did you search or read other people's posts before that?
that was my point...:silly:
if you're using superuser, try switching to supersu. the update the binaries. it should work then
btw, i'm not sure but i think swap is only for custom kernels. my bad.

work hard, play hard

Yes, asking for help, not info. The help would be specific to my phone, rom, lack of bootloader unlock etc
I did manage to flash a new kernel with flashtool but only certain ones work and im not sure why.
However I installed crossbreed as suggested and it was successful, so thats nice. I'll try some more suggestions later.
