Should "format /system" be used when flashing a new ROM or no? Asking this because I don't want to risk my phone again.
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
I doubt it matters. Most rom installations that I know of start out by formatting /system. I guess if you do, and it fails, you're left with a blank system, but it might help the flashing, I'm not really sure.

Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I wiped from recovery wipe data and cache wipe dalvik cache and wipe sd ext.I hope so this is the meathod to wipe
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yup, that should've done it.
Not sure what is going on, all I can suggest a factory reset, or revert to stock and start again...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
factory reset as in stock recovery and and stock rom?
That's about all I can suggest. You can back up before, and you can always root again...
Or wait for some other advice, I'm sure there's better ideas floating around, and honestly, I've never heard of this issue before...

I know you don't have to wipe to upgrade to a CM nightly, but should I get Google Apps again when prompted to in ClockworkMod?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
If it's the same version that you already have, then there's no point...
If it's a newer version, then go for it...
Latest version can usually be found here:

Thanks a lot. I need my flashing fix so I'm going to start doing nightlies. I just can't wait for final.

Flashed it without the GAPPS and upon rebooting they weren't there. I just downloaded them from the link, flashed, and now I'm setting them up. I guess it deletes all of your login info. No biggie, easy stuff.
Sorry, if you're doing a full wipe, then you will need to reflash the gapps. I seldom wipe on the nightlies...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Oh no I didn't wipe, that's why I thought it was strange. No biggie.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
its a RM shortcoming.. you have to select gapps at that prompt or reboot into recover and manually flash just the ROM.. otherwise your gapps dont survive
Got it!

I was looking at the Cyanogen site, and few people have been commenting on some of the latest nightlies removing the gapps (presumably overwriting the whole system folder).
No biggie, and not a common occurrence...

need help on cwm
hi, im some what new to this and im having some problems with wcm on mytouch 4g... well had the phone working great and i when to try out a new rom called synergy-rc1 i booted in to recovery then wipe data/ factory reset then wiped cache partition and also wipe Dalvik cache then installed from sc card like before everything was going great then restarted the phone after it completed the install and it booted into the synergy rom screen then it sat there for about 10min and it restarted again and it keaps looping over. restarted in to recovery (cwm ) and tried to do a a factery reset and clear cache and this is what i got and i cant even do a restore.
clockworkmod recovery v5.0.2.0
checking MD5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore...
restoring boot image...
restoring system...
Error while formatting /system!
any help would be appreciated [email protected]
probably a corrupt sd partition.
cwm is known top do that..
try formatting your sd card after saving the content to your pc first.
after format move stuffs back
I would go ask this question in the mytouch 4G section you will probably get better answers.
Hello,
I just got my One today, and I've been trying to root it and stuff. I unlocked the bootloader successfully, then tried flashing the custom recoveries. For some reason only cwm (regular) worked; the other ones (cwm touch and TWRP) flashed successfully, but when I tried going into recovery, the phone would be on the "booting into recovery screen", then just turn off.
Anyways, I just continued with cwm regular, but it kept saying "can't mount /cache/recovery/command, log, last_log,..." basically lots of that stuff on the bottom. I ignored that. Then, I put superuser.zip into the SD card, but clockworkmod could not find the sd card stuff.
Finally, in CWM, I formattted /system, /sdcard, /external_sd, /data and /data/media. Then the phone would ONLY boot straight into the bootloader (even if I did NOT hold down), could not even open recovery. So I flashed the same cwm recovery again.
Now I can only go into bootloader and recovery. Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any help in advance.
I'm just guessing but I think it's because you formatted everything and never flashed a rom. So there's just nothing on your phone, it can only boot into the bootloader because everything else was formatted.

That sounds reasonable. Does anyone know how to "put" something on the phone? even just stock stuff, so I can boot?
Relock your bootloader then use an RUU. Then unlock and try again.

Adb push a rom onto the phone. Google adb if you don't know how to use it.

Don't RUU use this tool makes it easy

Also download a Rom you want and just click on sideload Rom, you may also have to click install HTC drivers first too.

The thread will eventually drift away. Next time, post in the Q&A forum. More importantly, don't rely on a toolkit to save you. Sometimes, they don't work. The actual fix to this problem is fairly trivial (and to poster above, doesn't necessarily involve ADB either). If were trying to simply push stock software back on, it's three (well, in your case two) fastboot commands:
fastboot flash boot <path-to-boot.img>
flash system <path-to-system.img>
After unzipping a factory .tar. It's worth learning how to do in case this happens again.
I have about 12 gigs of music on my phone and I was wondering whether there was a way I could flash a new ROM without without losing the contents on my virtual sdcard. I remember when I first rooted the phone it deleted everything. Does anybody know if that would happen again (and how to stop it) if I flash a new ROM. And please don't say "put it in your computer"

Flashing a rom won't delete your contents. Just avoid selecting 'format internal storage' or something similar in recovery. What I do in recovery before flashing a new rom is:
Nandroid backup
Factory Reset
Wipe System partition
Flash new ROM.

I HAVE AN XT890 and have been using it for about two weeks..
I rooted the phone and just installed rooted apps on top of stock firmware.
but then I tried installing a mod ROM and it goes trough, but when is at the "Type password to decrypt storage"
I enter my code and it goes fwd but then it just stops at the green android dude that has gears for top and bottom parts....
I thought it was a problem with my password, but I realized that it still recognizes it, since it does not go to the green android sceen if I enter the incorrect password..
I tried to just wait for it.. But no luck..
tried to flash a stock ROM using RSD lite
I get an error with a command Not recognized
In recovery, I try to wipe data, but it says:
wiping data
Formating /data...
Error mounting /data!
Skipping format...
Formatting /cache...
Formatting /sd-ext...
Formatting /sdcard/.android_secure...
Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!
Skipping format...
Data wipe complete.
Thanks in advance to all of you guys!!!

Flashed cmw and installed the ROM.. And voilà!!
All is good now!
