Hello fellow Z owners,
I'm new to both the Z and Android, but not to forums, so I swear I've tried my best to do searches first :cyclops: anyway, have been using the phone quite extensively over the past few days, and here're a few little annoyances that I wish could be solved with your help:
Keyboard:
1) It seems that Google voice typing keeps automatically enabling itself after a while no matter how many times I've unticked the box. I don't like it because I prefer having the full stop button there instead as I use it a lot more often. The only work-around I've found so far is to go to settings, have the box unchecked, and directly leave the page with it running in the background. As long as I press menu (?) button and I see the settings page still there, the voice button doesn't come back on, it seems. Any proper ways to get it to disable for good?
2) After typing some numbers/symbols, the keyboard should (at least I thought) switch back to normal letter layout after pressing on "space", but mine doesn't. I've asked friends on other Android devices and theirs do switch back, so it seems like it's an Xperia issue? Is there a way I can get it to switch back from numbers/symbols layout to letters layout after pressing "space"?
3) I can't seem to be able to get rid of the smiley key on the keyboard (next to the numbers/symbols button). I have the smiley key unchecked already (under settings -> language & input -> xperia keybaord -> keyboard appearance -> additional keys), but it doesn't seem to work.
4) Similarly to #3, I can't seem to get it to change the keyboard skins neither, always just stuck on black&grey no matter what I choose (grey only, black only)
Stamina mode LED:
Basically, I want the corresponding LED notifications for an app to work under stamina mode. I understand why LED notifications are disabled, to safe battery, but LEDs don't use much power and if I have an app under "always active", the corresponding LED notifications for that app should also work, but it doesn't. Any way to make it work?
Thanks very much for reading all that in advance. Sorry I know my questions are a bit long, but I just thought it's best for me to be as precise with my questions as possible. Thanks again!
Your keyboard issues is only happening on yours. It is not an xperia thing. Might just be a bug in the keyboard. Just repair your phone with pcc or seus.
And stamina mode I don't think there's a workaround atm.
Thanks LitoNi. Good to know I have a lemon
PCC is PC Companion, I assume? And just find the repair function in there? Will it set my phone back to factory settings (hope not)? Thanks!
Edit: oh and sorry, so you mean your XZ doesn't have all issues 1-4? Thanks!

yes PCC is PC companion, and SUS (SEUS) is Sony (Ericsson) Update Service. When you repair with both, it will wipe everything and i advise you to back up everything before doing so.

Ok thanks for that heads up!
Sorry so just wanted to clarify, you don't have any of my keyboard problems above?
Ok I've "repaired" the phone, still exactly the same problems. None of the issues have been solved above.
Anything I should look at, please? Thanks!

This should be fixed in 4.2.2, it does works as intended though. But I think Sony will give us an option whether to enable it or not in StaminaMode

if it ask whether to do a full wipe or not, do a full wipe.
Repair it with SEUS if not,
flash a respective FTF file.
Thanks again. I did do a full wipe. Still exactly the same :/ will trying flashing I guess
So no one else have the same issues? Is it really just my phone? Just wanted to double check before I go ahead, don't want to go through all that and then come back and find out that all XZs have the same problems, you know... hope you understand
So, I sat down and played around with all settings, and guess what, I've finally managed to get it fixed.
You see, my phone was bought in HK and so its default keyboard was the Chinese keyboard (despite having selected "English" as default language...", so whenever I've changed any settings, it for some reason didn't work.
Once I've changed the default keyboard back to Xperia English, though, all my saved settings (no Google, no smiley etc) are now there. Furthermore, it also automatically switches back to the letters layout after I press on "space" after a punctuation or number.
Wonder why the settings didn't work when default wasn't English though... weird...
Anyway, just for any future references. Hope this will help other n00bs out there in case they run into the same problem.
Now fingers crossed for Sony to fix the LED notifications in stamina mode.......
Yay . I don't have the Chinese keyboard installed so I wouldn't know lol.
The stamina mode led, one Sony staff forwarded it to the technician, whether an option to enable it will come or not is still unknown.
Yeah hopefully they will.
Thanks again for your help mate.

Hi everyone...
I've been having problems with my Galaxy S since yesterday. After upgrading to XXJPM my display is rotated 180 degrees (completely upside down). Strangely enough, the touch interface seems to be working just fine.
For example, the "Phone" icon is supposed to be on the bottom-left of the screen. It is now displayed on the top-right corner (again, upside down) but in order to activate it I still have to touch the bottom-left corner right on the icon's original position.
The display is also rotated 180 degrees if I enter recovery or download mode, but the volume up-down buttons still function as is. There are times when the display will appear normal for a few seconds before rotating itself 180 degrees again.
I followed the installation steps to the letter, did everything properly, I even searched just in case other users had similar issues, but I still haven't found a fix yet (really sorry if I missed similar threads). I also tried calibrating the g-sensor, but that didn't solve the problem.
Auto-rotate works perfectly, but the screen is still upside down no matter which way I rotate the handset. The same goes for when auto-rotate is off.
Any thought will be highly appreciated. I'm also willing to make a small donation if necessary. I'm desperate for a solution

I did, but that didn't solve the problem. I think it has something to do with the bootloader since during startup the screen would show the normal Galaxy S logo correctly for about one second and then the display is rotated. Even the download/recovery interface is flipped.
The Good and the bad
Good news first: you are not the only one have this problem.
I have same problem after updated Nordic v. Froyo.
Bad one is I haven't got a clue how to sole the problem.
Let't belive ours has special talent which can jump twice more that ordinary ones.
try reflashing with one of the roms that has a bootloader included. search around not all do.. i know the jh2 for i9000m has bootloader..

Tried this, didn't work too. I also tried Tayutama Edition rom, actually it helps a bit. After finishing the sdcard scanning routine the screen would work just fine for quite a while before going straight back to being rotated. It is also still upside down during the entire boot process.
Found another interesting discovery. Still using Tayutama firmware, if I switch the Power-Saving Mode from Display settings off and on, the display will be reverted back to normal.
I wonder what's causing this issue in the first place...
Tried another fresh rom, still no improvement...
I attached a picture showing how the screen is upside down even in download mode. Notice how the USB port and the download mode triangle just don't match.
Any further advice would be highly appreciated

I'm glad you fixed your Galaxy S though. Quick question: did you have the screen upside down during the Galaxy S logo animation on startup?
It seems diffren kind problem
I am sorry that my solution did not work for you.
Mine did work few hours after down load Froyo.
Then problem began.
Have you tried factory reset then calibration?

Yes, I tried that and it didn't work.
Still trying different solutions right now, hope I can get a good solution soon
I have another Galaxy S in hand. The broken one still has its screen upside down. I was wondering if I can backup the bootloader and ROM of this new Galaxy S with the system working correctly to the broken one. Will that be possible?
As always, inputs are welcomed
Thanks wonbad!

Thanks! I had also problems with auto rotation, did even factory reset but did not start to work until made calibration you mentioned.
I've tried virtually anything to get the display fixed, including doing a complete rom backup of a healthy Galaxy S, and the display is still rotated. I think it really is a bootloader problem.
I took it to Samsung service center here in Bali. They said they can fix it, but they won't because I got the device in UK and I need to take it to a service center in the UK to get it fixed. Crazy...
A quick Note
==========
Just to make it clear, for any future reference, display rotation if shown when it is powered off and charging and also while booting, this is most probably a hardware issue, this can ONLy be achieved by replacing the LCD (or doing a hardware repair of the LCD) it has nothing to do with sensors or software.
Thanks.
Hey all,
for those of you who are experiencing irresponsive back/home buttons you could try this below:
go to settings -> language&keyboard ->HTC sense input -> advanced -> calibration tool
When you're calibrating the keyboard, press the keys very lightly, after you're done you should have a better back/home key response.
At least it worked for me hope this helps!!!
Just calibrated it, see how it goes during the day and report back .
i guess it has to do with stock setting were meant for you to press it normally(harder/more precise?) to be responsive, so if you calibrate it to be responsive to light touches, pressing the keys as you would normally would make it better.
but then again its just my own thoughts, hope it helps
I didn't realise it registered the firmess of touch? Just thought it was on/off input?
Aah excellent ill try this
I wonder if this has any effect on the sensitivity while having a screen protector.
had a go should be able to tell after a days use
If anyone can test this with the Spigen Glas.T that would be great. Thank you.
Doesn't work im afraid . Its definitely a software issue though, hence you can lock and unlock and the buttons work again. Confident it will be fixed in the next update.

so this problem with capacitive home/back buttons is REALLY pissing me off.
went to sprint store, asked to see their display unit, told them the problem i had. guy said "I NOTICED THAT TOO". used their demo unit, EXACT same problem. Talked to some people on IRC who also noticed it.
*really* hope its software-fixable because I love the phone otherwise
It worked for me. Seems either way it's a software issue.

Thanks TC!
I've used adb shell # getevents to see that FREQUENTLY tehre is just no event generated when pressing the home and back buttons. It *is* a hardware problem. I've never been so annoyed, displeased, or disappoined with a phone. I'll be returning it. Even tho the model I saw in the store had the exact same problem. If my next one has same problem I'll give the ol F**K YOU to HTC and not look back.
Also, havent found a way to get software keys on it...which MAY be an acceptable alternative to broken hardware buttons

Hi everyone! First of all i would like to thank you for all the efforts on this forum and the great job all these years.
I have recently bought my first smartphone, sony xperia z.
I would like to ask for a verification about a strange thing i saw. I have stock 434 firmware of sony no root, unlocked bootloader though for future custom roms. Phone working okay.
Today when i entered the *#*#7378423#*#* service menu, on the service tests menu, when i press on the various options i get a result, but when pressing on PRESURE senson and on WATERPROOF, i get this DEVICE DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS OPTION ?
I think this is kinda strange. Should i send it back? or is it a firmware bug? I wouldn't like to test with water by the way
Can anyone else verify ?
Thank you very much for any answers

I can verify that we all get the same message. No clue why though.
It seems I'm having issues with my 6506 ZL and I don't know if it's related to the Battery bug issue, and/or something else - so I've come to my brothers and sisters here to help :good:
1. The phone will not boot unless it's plugged in (either through USB or the wall charger) as once it hits the Sony logo (or animation) it will turn off.
2. Once I manage to get in, I'm able to use the phone with no issues
3. ..and when I unplug the phone again, if I leave it alone, I'm able to do basic things like use the unlock screen go to different homepages, and open the app drawer
4. If I select a widget, app, or go into settings, the phone turns off.
Since an update wasn't available via the PCC or SUS, I flashed the most recent firmware 10.3.1.A.0.244 myself, and it doesn't seem to help the issue so I'm led to believe it's a problem with the hardware itself - maybe a sensor or something that reads the battery as dead?
Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I can try doing, or am I SOL and need to send it to Sony repair (and potentially have to pay to fix it)? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated

Suddenly my xperia Z3 compact's Home button, back button or even the button which shows the background apps is not working. Although these buttons work perfectly when the device is locked which means nothing is wrong with the touch screen/display (at that time the call button, lock button and camera button are displayed respectively). But I don't understand why these buttons aren't working when the device is unlocked. I've already tested on "safe-mode". It didn't work. Then I flashed the device using flashtool and reverted back to kitkat. But still the same problem persists. I have attached two pictures so that you can understand my problem. Now someone please help me out.

Odd issue
Did you wipe anything with Flashtool?
I have a similar issue. I think it's a hardware problem.
You can try the service tests menu (type *#*#7378423#*#* in dialer), but maybe it won't detect any problem since the affected area is in the navigation bar.
I believe your phone recognizes touches in that area when the device is locked simply because it is possible to unlock the phone by swiping up starting from points a little higher than the area where the navigation bar is placed.
The complete description of my problem is in this thread, and I've also found someone who posted screenshots too.
I've attached some screenshots of my phone (using service tests menu).
Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution yet, so I'm thinking about sending it to repair.

btw....Using "Glove mode" helps a bit.....I just don't get it what's wrong in normal mode?
And I've rooted the device....used Gravity box to tweak the navigation bar. I've increased the navbar height from 100px to 110px. So. now it works somehow but only in horizontal mode. In landscape mode it's the same as before. And this thing not works when I'm running any apps. So, It's become kinda irritating to use any apps and lately the right side panel of the status bar has also stopped working. I just don't get it!

Yeah, Unfortunately It's a hardware issue.....I went to the service center today and they told me something like the Digitizer should be replaced meaning the whole display should be changed. As I've got no warranty, that leaves me with no choice but to spend a whole lot of money right now

This is still a problem for me. I believe it is a software problem. I tried the screen on a game that uses the screen, Piano Tiles 2. The game menu is at the bottom of the screen, right where the Home/Back button is supposed to be. But on the game, this area actually works. Whereas if you exit from the game, that same are-- that same area where it doesnt have a problem in-game-- no longer works when interacting with the sony OS.
What gives?
I also tried updating software, a different launcher, and nothing worked so far. Its been months now and it seems to be deteriorating.
I have the same problem, too. I think it is a software problem, because in the lock screen there is no problem. Using the buttons, in horizontal mode with Sony logo on the right, works.
I'm using official 23.5.A.1.291
It seems there are a lot of devices with this issue (mine is one of them)

I sent my phone to the assistance last week, I've just received the confirmation it has been repaired but at the moment I don't have any report.
I'm asking myself if this kind of issue could start again in the future... when the warranty will be expired
If any of the capactive keys ( Home, Back and Menu ) buttons don't work. The Z3 Compact has soft-keys so you could try either of the two:
1) Flash a clean ftf, wipe everything. If it works after this it was most likely just a software bug/glitch, but if it still persists..
2) Its most likely a hardware issue related to the digitizer, you could either send it to Sony if you have warranty, or get it fixed by Sony or a black market fixer if you want to save some cash
Good luck

In your opinion isn't quite strange a lot of users have the same issue in the same range of time? This make me think to a bug, not to an hw issue.
Furthermore now also the Z3 seems to have the same...

A solution that worked for me
Hi,
I'm no expert but the following worked for me.
It seems an app was installed or upgraded that invisibly smothered the screen and prevented interaction.
1. Goto Settings / Apps / Settings (cogwheel) / Draw over other apps / Change all the apps to "No".
2. If you have installed the "Back Button" app, goto Settings / Accessibility / Back Button / Turn off.
The above got it working again - just.
Then goto Settings / Display / Glove mode / Turn on.
Worked a treat. Good luck.
