convex rear screen or only wrong sensation? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I noticed a small problem in my xperia z. As you know, the edges fiberglass chassis protrude slightly with respect to the panels of front and back glass. in my case I noticed that where there is the door to the sim, the board seems a little less prominent, as if the rear glass was a little more prominent. your are so well? is a problem caused by overheating of the processor? is something almost imperceptible so even taking pictures you could not see

anyone can say if you have the same situation? is it normal?

it does seem a little convex here now that you've mentioned it . Only a little

Yes Only a little...but now i think the Glass rests the surfaces in that point :/

Anyother?

The glass is flexible, maybe it's that . Anyway, what problem does that cause to you?

i think that now the glass touch the surface where i put the phone.

Android i suppose that the Phone Could have an internal problem. Possible?

Just had a really good look at mine and it looks perfectly flat so wouldn't say a curve in the back was normal.
Phil

It's very very Little...like 0.1 mm. Can this compromise water proof?

I see what you mean now, if I run my finger nail across the back towards the opposite side (with USB and microSD) my nail catches on the rubber edge protruding slightly, however, on the side with the SIM slot, the glass protrudes slightly further than the rubber edge, and so my nail slips off the edge of the phone.
The problem you'll see, because of this, is that when your phone lies flat on the desk, it should be resting on the rubber edge and not touching the glass, but on the SIM side, the glass touches the desk.
It might scratch the glass/screen protector but it shouldn't be a problem otherwise.

yes it's the same thing for me!!!...so i think that the only problem is the scratch of screen protector.

I restored the original form with a vise and a phone...but when i play a game and the phone became hot the problem return...so i think that is a stock
behavior of xperia z. the convex is imperceptible but the rear glass touch the surface and i can see some scratches on the sony stock film.I would not want that water came from this small curvature!

[Q] Camera Lens Question

Hi,
Noticed that my camera lens was getting scratched. I was trying to look at it closely and it seems something like the asf (a plastic film) is also on the camera lens. At least thats what it seems like to me.
Can someone confirm if that is indeed the case or am I just seeing things?
Thanks in advance

You're probably seeing things, unless you put a protector on there yourself.
Mind you that the glass for the camera is a separate piece of glass, so the edge is visible just inside the silver ring - not to be confused with a protector. A protector wouldn't actually be needed anyway since the glass doesn't go as far as the glass backplate. That is, it doesn't touch any surface when you put the phone down (unless you got huge pieces of dirt underneath).
I myself have accidentally scratched the factory screen protector on the back of the phone quite a lot, but my camera lens is still perfectly intact. And no, I really cannot see a protector on my camera lens :cyclops:

If the glass gets scratched a little, say on the bottom left part, above the black ring. Does it influence the camera quality? Just like i somehow got a minor piece of dust behind the glass over there.

As long as it's not right in front of the lens and it's tiny, it shouldn't pose a problem.
Actually, if you take a bunch of pictures and you can't find one spot they all have in common that looks odd, there's no problem anyway

I didn't find any spot, yet sometimes i doubt a little about the lighting. But that can also be the normal lighting effects. Not that big of a photographer with experience hehe.

[Q] Glass to Plastic spacing

How is the glass fit for everyone elses z3c? There is a decent size gap between the glass and plastic on the top side of my z3c, enough to where i can noticeably see dust and other material in the gap.
Am i alone? Is this a wide spread issue? It really takes away from the premium feel of the phone to see all this dust & crap between the glass and plastic :\. Will post up some pictures if they can make out anything.
It's not very noticeable for me, but there are smalls gaps all around the glass rear and front. It's not very visible on the black version, but I can see some debris stuck in there under bright light. I can also feel the gap with my nail. I have the impression that the bottom gap (backside) is a bit larger than the top gap. My previous phone, Xperia Acro S, had no gap around the glass whatsoever.

My first one - black - had this pretty bad so I sent it back. I got a different colour instead - red/orange - so any dust collecting would hopefully be less noticeable, but the gap is actually less in this replacement. There's only a small one at the top of the front glass now.
So I think the cut of their glass panels is maybe not as precise as it should be and there is a bit of variance. But most people will have gaps of varying degrees I think..

If you feel on the left and right sides with you finger nail, can you feel your nail "drop" a little bit between the glass and plastic, with the replacement unit?

Maybe just, but it's not enough for dust to get in any more. Only at the top now is the gap large-enough for dust.

Ah, sounds like how it is for mine. I think they all have this to some degree. I wonder if Sony has a technical reason for the gaps?
Going to return my z3c and get another one which will hopefully have a better fitting screen. The spacing between the plastic band around the screen and the "translucent plastic" is also big enough where debris gotten stuck in it. Very disappointing.

That spacing is always going to be there I think. Well it's not actually a spacing, it's just because the finish between the plastic band and the translucent sides is not a flush finish. This is just the design of the phone. It does catch some small debris on mine as well, but it's relatively easy to remove.
At least you can wash your phone if it gets too dusty.
Just don't do it under running tap water.

This is not the spacing i'm referring to. I talking about between the glass and the plastic. It definitely is not apart of the design of hte phone, as the right left and bottom edges are almost perfectly flush.

Ah gotcha. Yeah that spacing is disappointing but i'm "ok" with it. The glass spacing on the other hand i'm not ok with.
also mine has the gap in the left part, the right part its perfect
as you said probably the screen its not fit perfect, but for me its ok because i only see it if i look carefully.
I think it could actually be a safety measurement: if the phone falls and hits the ground with that plastic rim, the relatively small gap could prevent the impact from being directly transferred onto the glass.

[Q] help bottom buttons not working all the time

I've just noticed an annoying behaviour where the back / home / windows buttons don't pick up keypress all the time.
It started right after I installed the power support shock absorbing film yesterday.
Before that I had the original plastic film for a couple of days and didn't notice any problem.
If I wet my finger they seem to be working all the time.
I suppose it's the power support film, is this something that just needs break-in/settle or should I throw the £18 screen away?
Why cover up the great Gorilla glass. Yes it can break with a drop but normal usage you will not get any scratches.
Just don't pocket it with keys and don't have sand in your pocket.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk
after having seen the terrible gorilla glass 3 of my gf's samsung s4 i decided it was worth put something in front ( that thing tends to scratch easily ).
back to the point, the powersupport i've got is the shock absorbing thicker one, i wonder if loss of sensibility around the edges is to be expected and will disappear with use, or whether it's just a big ripoff...
i do have dry fingers and wetting the surface solves the prob. temporarily, but i can't lick my fingers everytime i take out the phone

Micro Scratches :(

I haven't managed to make up my mind on which screen protector to get, and despite having a case on it and only placing my phone in soft pockets (not jeans or jackets), there a micro scratches on the screen.
Firstly I would just like to know if you have any micro scratches on your screen and secondly do you think that these scratches are on the oleophobic coating or is the screen glass just a bit scratchy?

i dont know but one thing is sure, nowadays screen takes very easily those micro scratches. ( i had mi9 and same problem than you now)
I think this is due to the new Gorilla glass, which is resistant to cracking but prone to scratching, as it has a softer surface. I managed to get a micro scratch just while unboxing and playing with it for a while. Put on a screen protector like an hour after unboxing and noticed a tiny micro scratch on the display, so... well.
Under close examination, I see none after a week of wearing it in jeans pants, and occasional cleaning the screen by wiping against pant leg. By that measure, it seems no different than my prior phones (it doesn't seem weaker).
Mine scratched as well under similar conditions. Nothing that could scratch the screen (coins, keys etc.) is ever in the same pocket as my phone. Guess jeans are tougher than they used to be - in the pockets at least!

It's not the jeans, it's due to the fine sand in it which are also in regular pants lol. Always clean out your pockets before putting your phone in. Using mine since the day it came out and still no fine , hairline , etc scratches at all.

Fair enough thought, but none of my iPhones, Samsung or Nexus phones travelling in the same pockets have been scratched in the same way.
All this to say that this isn't my first rodeo. The Huawei P30 Pro screen, or perhaps its coating is very fragile it seems...

Well, since they're not using gorilla glass and using their own, it's hard to say. It could be the quality control during production. Some phones may be different from the others in terms of the coating. Even on the mate 20 pro, i never had any scratches on the screen after months of usage. As long as the pocket is always cleaned, it should be fine. Tests on jerryrigseverything shows that it has the same resistance as most major flagships
Not that I notice (which doesn't mean there aren't any, it's probably just my eye sight)
I did however have this unpleasant surprise - I put the phone in a cheapo phone stand, and while I was taking it out (carefully) a thread of plastic just rolled off, right around the power button.... my heart ached :crying:

I've cracked my screen by accidentally dropping my belt buckle onto the very top of it just left of the notch. Wasn't a hard impact and from a low height. Subjectively I feel the screen is more fragile than my previous phone, Samsung s8.

Question S21 Ultra camera lens scratches

Hello Everyone,
Been using the S21U for 2 weeks now and I have recently noticed micro scratches on the lens element!
The phone is in transparent TPU case since day 1 and I have hardly went outdoors. I traded off my S20+ and the camera bump didn't had a single line from 10 months of usage.
Has anyone encountered this? Maybe others can have a closer look now at their devices.
Any insights, suggestions on what needs to be done or can be prevented will be welcome!
Really sorry to hear that. Just out of precaution, I have placed a whitestone dome glass protector on mine, just because I dont want to experience anything like that with a EUR1300 phone. Not that much expensive and you get two protectors in the box.

how was it scratched? only from keys?
Be very wary of scratching this phone. I recently figured out that the S21 Ultra supposedly does not have the same Victus glass design as the Note 20 Ultra... It has a slightly modified form of Victus that's much, much thinner (as it's covered by another, easily scratch-able glass material...and so the cameras might be like this too)... So instead of being resistant to most micro-scratches, they are actually easier to get and become permanent immediately on this phone (learned this by scratching my display with denim jeans - no metal/button contact) =(.
I'm just assuming that they're doing this to increase their glass repair jobs... Granted, Apple has been doing this with their iPhones for an extremely long time now... But hey, Samsung has started acting kinda like they're the Apple-like company of Android, lol.
im sorry, but you what?
you scratched glass with jeans?
I'm a stainless steel fabricator do I'm in the worst possible job for scratching phones so have the screen and camera protected, ESR TPU for the front and LK glass for the camera, don't even notice they are on at all and only coast 20 yo-yos for both
The lenses don't scratch easily, but depending on what you do during your day you might end up with stuff in your pockets that will do it. There are a lot of glass protectors for the cameras out there for the S21U, for example in the US you can get a 2-pack from Spigen for $12, and a bunch more that are even cheaper.
If you get one, get one of the blacked out ones, You will get artifacts in your photos from the flash/AF light as they get channeled across the glass of the protector if you don't; learned that one from using clear cases over the years.
Are you sure the lenses are scratched or the camera bump? Because the camera bump is not made of glass! It's metal and the darker colors of phones will be a horrible one, especially phantom black!!
That's not the lense. It's a factory protector.
May have been marred during assembly.
Don't sweat as it can be replaced if needed. A very slight may no effect the images at all but because the otherall area is so small it might. Protectors are a waste of money; it -is- the lense protector!
Any added optic elements will degrade the image.
It's possible to polish out micro scratches with a clean, dry finger tip by rubbing back and forth on glass or antireflective coatings. Takes at least 30 minutes or more... if it really bugs you. Yes dry callus is abrasive and hard enough to polish glass.
Likewise even the smallest amount of grit, sand etc rubbed against it by your finger can marred it.
Don't use that opening in the case as a pickup point.
It can also be marred by improper cleaning. Only use a clean dry microfiber cloth. Wet it a little if need be. Ordinary cotton cloth will eventually cause scratches owing to unseen debris it picked up. Seen many a pair of glasses made of glass scratched like this. Grit stinks into the microfiber material away from the surface being cleaned helping to protect it.
My 10+ lense protector is plastic. I live in the desert. I occasionally clean it but only with a microfiber cloth the same way I treat high dollar optics. No damage after a year and a half.
Just use a good case with a raised cam guard.

Hey thanks man for the reassuring reply!
As I said in the post, Its barely been 2 weeks and I didn't even travelled much, put it in jeans with keys, coins etc. It was lying dormant with little use.
On close inspection in direct sunlight / outdoors. I saw lines which are underneath the lens glass and not on the surface.
I just don't want the image quality to suffer and plus the service center sucks (experience in dealing with S20+)
Not sure if they will acknowledge it or tag it as a user handling damage.
What are my options?

If it's on the internal side there's no way you did. Make sure you specify that if returning it.
If it's on the inside without direct inspection it's hard to tell if it's on or into the glass.
It may simple be a smear albeit a hard to remove smear.
Either way shoddy assembly. Having put together thousands of display assemblies I was always careful that the internal surfaces were spotless.
They are selling camera protectors on aliexpress. However, they are not exactly sticking to the actual lens as they are slightly deeper. That basically would create s small gap between the camera lens and the protector. I would assume it MIGHT slightly degrade quality in some cases. Not sure but it may be worth trying out.

hey man,
this smear or minute lines on the inside or whatever is really bugging me!
My experience with samsung support (In my region and India) hasn't been good in the past. They all act as fools who recommend factory reset via their tool for every issue.
My question is will samsung own this or pass on the blame to me as improper handling or usage marks.
I just don't want the already botched up image processing to suffer further.

Samsung phone support sucks, real bad.
You can send it in as it's clearly their fault but that will take a lot of time.
Remove back cover and clean or replace if need be. Make sure you have the OEM adhesive strips needed to reassemble it. The replacement lense protector is held on by an adhesive strip*.
It may be easier to get the whole OEM rear panel assembly.
If you do it yourself use heat carefully/evenly and take as long as it takes to carefully pry it open without breaking it. A small amount of isopropyl alcohol can be injected to help break the adhesive seal.
*it maybe replaceable without taking off the rear cover but that maybe hard or impossible to do without marring the cover.
