[Q] What's the difference between SS3 and Rom Manager? - Motorola Atrix HD

I know SS3 uses TWRP and Rom Manager uses CWM, but what are the real differences? Is there a reason I should use CWM/Rom Manager instead of SS3? I've been using SS3 and it's worked fine for all the roms I've tried (all but Batakang Rises so far).

OK. Safe strap is an awful way to be able to trick a phone with a locked boot loader into allowing flashing a ROM. Twrp just happens to be what they based it on. Its better than nothing.
Cwm, ahhhhhh now were talking. A real recovery that will let you do anything, to go along with our fully unlocked bootloader.
Cwm rocks, I guess would be the one point to take away from this.
Next, I'll show you how eye contact can make or break any business meeting.

SS3 is for locked bootloaders.
CWM is for unlocked bootloaders.
It's as simple as that.
Using SS3 on an unlocked bootloader is a waste of time.

SS3 seems to be better for me right now, because I can't figure out how to flash Gapps with a rom with a 1 zip flash limit.

You do them 1 at a time man. It's not complicated lol. It's how everyone does it.

You can use Droid 3 Bootstrap or Safestrap as a custom recovery, IMO I see no reason to use ROM manager, as Safestrap (what I use) works perfectly..
Safestrap is better than normal Bootstrap because you can enable the "safe system" and install the system partition on the /preinstall directory (so you can leave your normal system intact) Although it depends on your phone model, if you're running a XT862 (Motorola Droid 3 - Verizon) then you're set. Other phone models have issues with safestrap.
-You might be able to use ROM Manager, but I would stick with Safestrap or Bootstrap because I KNOW that they work.
I like to use custom recovery though because it is easier/simpler and faster to do. I had it on my Droid Incredible. Just want to make sure it works right now. Though i will look at that. How would i apply it?

You should be able to find Safestrap via Hashcode's website, go to the [SELFKANG] Cyanogenmod 7 page in Android Development, and you will be able to find his website that has the file. It is an APK file, so you just install it and run the installation from the app. I have not used custom recovery through ROM Manager, because I don't think it's compatible, but you could try it out..

i don't think we can, rom manager flashes a version of the custom recovery to the bootloader which runs before the phone runs so that if you accidentally mess up your phone, you can easily restore it back to how it was before, and we don't have an unlocked bootloader, so by using the 2nd-init, we bypass needing to unlock the bootloader to be able to run custom ROMs (at least this is the way i understand it), so until they release a bootloader unlock, we're stuck using 2nd-init and bootstrap/safestrap to load up custom roms.....some roms you need to use safestrap and for some you need to use bootstrap, so you'd just have to check their instructions they give before the download link to make sure you're using the right one, using the wrong one can cause unforseen things to happen and can possibly brick your phone
Alright, I rooted, installed bootstrap recovery. Everything is good. Thanks guys.

Am I bricked?

Well, I rooted my ATT JB via Ubuntu and attempted to flash a custom rom (cyanogenmod 10.1) The flashing process said it went well so I decided to go for the reboot. Since then, I have been stuck in Fastboot.
What I have tried:
Normal Powerup
Recovery
Factory
BP Tools
All of these lead back to the same Fastboot screen so logically, I try to use RSD Lite to flash the latest JB firmware. When I do, it fails on the first step and says it failed before it ever began due to the verification or something. So, am I SOL?
You can't just flash cm10. You have to use safestrap man. Was it at least the cm10 for the Atrix HD?

How did u flashed to flash u must use safe strap 3.12 in order to flash cm10.1 or any other ROMs...

RSDLite can flash Motolorola-signed stock rom only.
I did use safestrap 3.11 to flash CM. I'm using RSDlite to try to flash it back to stock to have a functional phone again. I'm not that big a noob. I'm trying to flash the 4.1.1 official from ATT.

Did you create a new ROM slot to install CM? Because there's no way you could've bricked with an SS3 slot. On reboot you should be able to enter SS3, even if you mistakenly flashed to Stock like a noob.
Now if you for some reason tried Epinter's CM 10.1 on Stock, and if Safestrap allowed the custom updater to write over boot.img, then you are indeed screwed, hard bricked, SOL. That's the only hypothetical scenario for a hard brick with SS3. Gotta ask Hash if that's possible though. I don't know.
Was it the cm for the Atrix HD? And you installed it on rom slot 1 not the stock slot?

[Q] Question regarding similar issue.
I rooted using motochopper one click.
installed SS3.12.
and then flashed epinter's unofficial CM10.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243812 in ROM slot 1.
Everything said it was successful and finished and completed, but when I rebooted it just went to a black screen and nothing happened.
Any one have any idea where I went wrong or why it wouldn't work?
Posted here cuz it was the closest thing I could find on this other than epinter's post of cm10.1 but I can't post in development threads yet.
Thanks!
... I swear no one reads anything anymore. Do not use safestrap with our new custom roms that require unlocked bootloaders you need to use cwm. I feel like I should post this in every thread so people will have to see it.

DO NOT USE SAFESTRAP. This is the easiest way to root, unlock boot loader and install CMW
Anyone with safestrap installed should delete it and go through this processes.

Can we have mods or someone remove all threads relating to SS3 and sticky the unlock bootloader and CWM/Myth threads?

We've tried. I've tried 3 times for the CWM thread, PM'd Mattlgroff and he tried. Youngunn2008 has tried....After a while ya give up.
Our guides that have the most important information are stickeied, so there's that.
We don't need to remove the SS3 threads -- it might be updated, nothing concrete, but its a possibility. Its also a needed and required tool for users who wish to stay locked for whatever reason they have for staying locked.
As is, the information is on here. Its not our fault that new users don't read the guides.
///OoOo, that looks neat, I'ma gonna flash and not read any guides on here. I've been around the android block befo....wha tha fu....am I bricked?

[Q] Black screen after any custom rom

I have unlocked the bootloader and every boot yields the motorola bootloader warning message. I rooted installed safestrap. If I installay custom rom I only get a black screen after the safestrap screen on boot. I can revert to stock rom, it is fine.I searched th forum but did not see a similar problem.
There is NOO WAYYY you searched. Every single noob does this. This is probably the 5th time in a week. You can't use safestrap with a unlocked bootloader. You have to use cwm..
I kind of understood before maybe people just didn't really research but shoot it's says for locked bootloader in the damn safestrap title now.
Not trying to be a **** but hell don't lie and say you searched and couldn't find anything when it's clearly everywhere. If you just said Iono what I did it just won't work even though clearly it says not to Ok fine but don't say you looked.

I didn't unlock my bootloader, but it happens to me too. After buying my Razr HD (XT925), I rooted with Motochopper, then installed Safestrap. When I flash a Custom ROM, nothing happens, just a black screen. I'm a noob, and really don't know what to do, could you help me?

Probably because you tried to flash CM based ROMs with safestrap. You can only flash a select few with safestrap including Batakang, Joker, and Batakang Rises to name pretty much all of them. You need CWM, I prefer touch version so I don't wear my hardware buttons. Flash this in fastboot mode AFTER UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421418

I would like to undestand why Safestrap doesn't work with CM based ROMs. A lot of tutorials in this site suggest Safestrap for flashing Custom ROMs. I liked it because it goes back to Stock any time, really simple for me. If I use CWM, will I be able to restore my stock ROM?
Because safestrap is meant for locked a bootloader. And cwm will let you return to stock just make a nanodroid backup of it.

URGENT! Can't get rid of safestrap!

Okay, here's the problem. I installed safestrap after unlocking the boot loader screen. I rebooted my phone and the safe strap screen popped up, however I couldn't click on anything and it would not start the safestrap menu. Then I get an encryption unsuccessful error and it advises me to reset my phone. I do that, no change. Same safestrap screen, same encryption unsuccessful screen. I have tried to flash stock firmware however it is trying to use CWM to do it which seems to conflict with safestrap. I have also tried to uninstall safestrap via the shell, nothing there. How do I uninstall safestrap if I cannot even access the menu to do it? My phone for all intensive purposes is bricked right now.
Your going to have to flash the stock firmware with rsd. And read the beginner guide before doing anything else. Pretty much the first thing it says is don't use safestrap with a unlocked bootloader. I don't have any idea why you would think that's a good idea. You probably had to search to even find the topic.

I actually got it figured out. I was able to install CWM with Myth Tools Recovery, then flash back to stock. I guess you live you learn right?
Yes, totally agree. What's bad is if you totally brick ur phone. Lol

[Q] Custom roms soon?

Since root has been achieved with pingpongroot, do we have to wait for the bootloader to be unlocked. If anyone has any insight, that would be awesome. I am aware that the root was achived within the last couple of days I was just looking for a rough estimate.
Now that we have root we can eventually get a custom recovery and start flashing roms. The bootloader unlock would be nice but root is the main goal right now.....

I hope so! I'm a bit worried though because I'm coming from a Note 3 AT&T and we've had root for a long, long time but never a bootloader unlock. We've been able to install custom Touchwiz based ROMS, but no one can crack the bootloader there. Here's to hoping that with a wider developer audience the S6 gets a more favorable outcome!
I tried to download it the file asked me to open it in gallery.. Dunno why
I'll bet we'll see custom roms still with locked BL similar to safestrap. Though they'll be lightly modified and TouchWiz based I'm sure.
Only way I see getting BL unlocked is someone leaking the key, and that won't be happening anytime soon. I'm almost tempted to sell my ATT edge for the international version.
The thing everyone's not looking at is you don't need a recovery to flash Roms..we have flash fire which doesn't trip Knox or need a unlocked boot loader I personally tested it and it works it flashes and backs up just like a recovery

You successfully did a back up?
And you are right with the s5 we never achieved unlocked bl but still got recovery working thx to safe strap.
I wonder if safe staple can be used now since we have root. I would try but don't have a p.c to Odin back if it bricks lol

Correct, as seen in the regular at&T galaxy s6 thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...rom-cleanrom-1-0-clean-smooth-stable-t3111330)
they already have "CleanRom" which is flashed via FlashFIre. ive read that we can flash roms through FlashFire as long as it sits on the original Samsung kernal. (correct me if im wrong)
hopefully everything catches up soon. this device is beautifully amazing.
