Okay here is your chance to be completely honest. There are lots of people with cracked X1's but how many people think it was caused due to a design flaw rather than accidental damage?
The main thread detailing these ongoing issues can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4825051
My phone has never been dropped and is well looked after. I didn't think the cracks would happen to my phone so I was quite horrified when I noticed my first one and then even more horified when I realised the cracks were almost the same as in photos other posted here.
I got in touch with SE and initially they said they wouldnt cover the replacement case but after some persistance and showing I knew of cases where this has happened before they eventually gave in so I do have a new case now... hope this doesnt go the same way as the last!
got it all - but I don't care
Yeah, I got it all:
My phone has cracks, which definitely are due to poor material design.
But it also suffered little damage during minor accidents.
So I can't do anything about it. And as long as everything works, I don't care.
Its clear though, that there are problems with the surface structure of at least some phones out there.
Maybe those cracks are related to UV radiation or something slowly proceeding like it.
IMHO you can't prevent damage completely anyway if its daily use and not just showcasing. But it would be a shame if the phone dissolves on it's own.
There have been 2 threads about this already (excluding the one you linked to), both with polls
A lot of people's X1 have cracked just by sitting on the table doing nothing. A lot of people's X1 have NOT cracked after falling several feet or being thrown across the room.
My X1 is both, cracked inside a leather case on a table, and didn't get a new crack when I dropped it onto concrete with no case. Can I vote twice?

My X1 never been dropped, and it's 24 hours in the leather case protection, but it has a crack, and I think it's because poor material and the battery expansion because over heat, so the battery push the casing, and when the casing can handle the force again then it will be cracked. that's it. , I think SE must do something about this, because poor material control and poor testing the device will make SE is like trash.

Well I think if your initial cracks appeared before it was dropped then you should vote "never been dropped + is/is not working properly".
I have just looked at the other X1 crack related polls but I couldn't find any that delved deeply enough.
Okay here is my problem, the screen on my nexus one cracked (on the inside under the glass) twice in a span of 6 months and HTC is trying to make me pay to fix it. There is *absolutely nothing* that I can think of that can even possibly cause the screen to break. It cracked twice at approx. the same place near the TOP of the screen. I've been using cellphones for the past 13yrs, had 2 iPhones and none of them broke like this. Very bitter taste in my mouth after using the Android and HTC platform for the first time. As it stands right now, I would rather have an iPhone4 with a defective antenna than to have choosen Google and HTC.
So here is my question: How many people are having the same problem? If you see my same question in other forums, please don't answer twice. I am a real user, a real person. After people start responding, I'm going to forward my threads to the reporter at cnet that had the same problem to hopefully have Google recognize this issue.
*If you DO NOT have this problem, but have an opinion to post, I deeply appreciate your opinion, but please don't do it here. This is strictly to see how often this is happening to N1 users.*
i cracked my screen but i dropped it on concrete a couple times so i can not blame google/htc for that.
however since I am rooted and my warranty is already void I plan to change the screen out myself when the new digitizer comes in.
Here is a link to buy the digitizer:
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/google-nexus-one-touch-screen-digitizer-replacement.html
And here is a link of a tutorial on how to fix it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTRXSMQ-GJY
Dont be scared that its 45 parts, they are very short each.
BTW if you know your thread is a question and even label it as such, dont you think this belongs in the Q&A thread?

Doesn't the nexus one have gorilla glass? Should be very hard to crack

No, it's a polycarb, but not Gorilla. Also the OP described the display cracking, not the digitizer (glass on the outside).
I have owned my N1 for 6 months now. My screen has never cracked and it remains in my pocket most of the day. Including at work where I go back and forth from coolers to hot grills constantly.
I understand you don't want people to reply if their screen didn't crack, but you can't get a fair judgement of how often this happens if only people with cracked screens can reply.
Heres my update: After numerous emails and phones calls back and forth, HTC finally agreed to fix my phone free of charge.
My advice for ppl having the same problem: Be honest, tell them what happened. Stay firm but respectful. Make sure they understand your dismay, but do not make it personal - the person on the other line is just following company guidelines and doing their jobs.
I dont know what did it, cause first I was offered 20% off then 50% off the repair costs (which I still think is bullsh!t, if the customer is at fault, then he/she should pay full to get repairs, if the device is bad, then HTC should fix it for free to boot, not offering "discounts"). But the last message I sent to HTC before getting the free repair offer was I quoted the CNET reporter that had hers replaced for free as well.
My experience with their customer service? Seeing as how I finally got justice in the end, I'm a lot happier than I could be. But the process is far, farrr from easy and what it should be.
And if anyone is wondering, I'm selling my N1 as soon as I get it back. Cause from my experience, the hardware design is clearly faulty. If it can break once and twice, there is no doubt in my mind that it will break a third time.
Weird that the OP is the only one reporting a cracked screen twice, when it's even rare to hear a screen cracked once. Unless you drop the N1 numerous times that is. Now i'm curious how the OP handles his N1.
Oh you know he keeps it in his skin tight pants pocket with his keys.
Just joking, I honestly don't know. I've scratched my screen (small scratches only noticeable when screen is black) but I've drooped it a few times and keep it my NWU (think cammo) pants pocket and no breakage yet.
I don't think the AMOLED will just crack from usage...
I cracked mine, but I dropped it on concrete face down. It was a sad day.
I'm not C.Ronaldo, and I dont wear tight jeans. I work in a bank and wear trousers with loose pockets. I keep my keys and change in my attache. If you dont think this is happening, do a google search for "nexus one cracked screens". Maybe this is restricted to the first few batches made, cause I ordered mine the day it was available. I honestly have no idea.
But if you are a N1 owner, and you're thinking that this "doesn't happen" - good luck with that, and I hope you will find my post useful when the time comes.
First post, hello everyone.
I've dropped my N1 from about 10 ft in the air, whilst ghost riding my SUV. The top right corner is where contact was made with the asphalt. It came to rest face up. The only damage was a bit of a nick out of the metal where first contact was made. Thank god.
People, there is a piece of outer glass, called the digitizer. It's what you touch, it's the outermost later. It is both protection for the actual screen and the digitizer.
There is an inner layer which is the actual AMOLED screen.
Be clear what what's breaking. Is it broken on the OUTSIDE? Digitizer. Is it NOT broken on the outside but the screen "looks broken", is "bleeding" etc? Screen.
Too much nonsense going back and forth.. Particularly "I dropped it, glass broke, HTC sux" stuff.

It was a joke. I know it sucks for you but a vast majority of N1 owners don't have cracked screen which leads a reasonable person to ask first what the few with broken screens are doing different, if there is an environmental factor (heat change, humidity, etc.) Or in other words what is the common factor.
LoL! Maybe you're butt-uuuggggllllyyyy! LoL! J/K Glad you got a free replacement!

1. You're an idiot.
2. I dropped mine from chest height onto tarmac in a carpark, the top left corner took the brunt of it (was in the sleeve at the time, so bad luck) and it came away with a pretty small nick in the metal housing.
It now lives in a Tough Case.
Hello everyone.
I got my Z yesterday and noticed that there were two screen protectors included in the box. One for the front and one for the back. I couldn't find any mention of these in the quick start guide and now I'm wondering whether these are required for the phone to be waterproof? I'm thinking no as this would be a huge fault on Sonys part if it were and that it's not explicitly mentioned in the quick start (but then again I could've overlooked something) but I think the speaker holes seem ominous regarding water intake.
Please advise.
Of course they are not required. And no worries about the speaker holes.
Also, please read the stickies. No questions in General section.

If they are a prereq for IP-classing mine would be bust by now. Don't worry, the screen protector has nothing to do with the IP-classing!

pardon my tone if it is too harsh
but you have tip my anger as a lurker in XDA, not that you cause it
but more like the unlucky switch to an accumulated anger to the misinformed user of this phone
I myself have not got my greasy hand on the phone, mainly because of the sales date in malaysia is 15 March
but I am damn sure to be able to answer the above question and more
1. The unit will come with 2 screen protector. This consist of front and back. NO, this SP is not needed for being IP55/57 certification
2. Why the 2 SP? well the unit will come (may or may not) with a matted layer of protection plastic. This is not SP, you should easily take it off.
3. If you look at the corner, there you can actually see there is a layer on the screen and back. This is called Shatter Proof layer.
4. This shatter proof layer is claimed by sony that in even of cracking the glass, you still can use if the layer are able to hold the broken glass in.
5. Removal of theis Shatter Proof layer is to own preference, as this layer is NOT scratch resistant. This is where the 2 SP comes in, Yes a layer of SP on a layer SPP(Shatter Proof Plastic) :silly:
6. Removal of the SPP will also take out the Sony Logo, some happy for it, some don't... Some have claimed that the logo is printed on the glass but the SPP stucked to strong to the logo, thus taking it out along when removing the SPP
7. Some have feel that two layer of plastic muted the response of the phone, and to take out the SPP and replace with a high end SP
8. The phone is totally water resistant up to 1meter of water for 30mins and at water spray at general direction (IP55 and IP57, google them out)
9. The speaker holes seem omnious to water seeping in is unfounded. All sound hole and mike is properly seal, thus most probably the cause for lack of ommph to the voice/sound
10. Dipping in water will make the speaker hole filled up with them, and will mute the sound level substantially, but leaving it to dry ~30mins will solve the issue
11. Dipping in the water with the plug/cover open will surely wreck the phone. There is a white piece of paper on the inside of these covered port holes to detect water contact. Might be used as evidence to voiding the warranty of the unit
12. The water resistant is for accidental events. Sony have advised against salt water or high chlorine water exposure.
other infos:
13. Stamina mode will disable the notification LED. Turn it off will still yield no notification for some. Hard reset and/or factory reset will revive it back
14. Rooting of the phone (currently) requires unlocking bootloader. Unlocking boot loader will wipe the DRM on the phones, which the Bravia Engine needed to run. So for now, rooting means losing the BE function
feel free to correct me
My apologies for posting this in the wrong section, I usually try to keep my thread titles informative and make sure to post in the right section but I was a bit quick to post this one. I have reported the thread and it will probably be moved soon.
mcchin: I didn't catch your tone as harsh and if you hadn't brought it up yourself I would've regarded your answer as just another informative addendum to the previous posts. I did a few Google-searches trying to find info about the extra protectors but couldn't find anything useful and wanted to be damn sure that the phone in fact is waterproof in it's current condition before I make an a** out of myself showing off this expensive piece.
Now I can put my phone in the sink and see if I can get rid of some dust that have lodged between the screen and chassis
Hello friends, two days before the phone fell out of my pocket descends out of the cab, rear, minor cracks occurred, the device got Turkcell, was sent to the room to change the back cover, subject to the warranty, charged 95 pounds, I wonder if the cover is changed, been a nuisance waterproof property, information or Do you have any idea?
OP I will ask you to read to the Forum Rules on posting....5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter,
I Closed your duplicate thread.
Hi guys,
The bottom line is if enough people complain about this issue, we may have a chance to keep this off future models.

Dear sir/madam
After many years with Apple, I finally gave in to your current advertising campaign promoting your latest flagship, the Z1, which you have been carpet bombing every conceivable medium with. I sold my iPhone 5 and bought a Z1.
However, unless you make one huge change with the Z2, I will sadly be forced to move to a different brand in a year's time.
This is because you are insisting on ruining one of the most beautiful phones in the world with an anti shatter film ON top of the screen.
In your literature you say that you use scratch resistant glass, *just to stick the most scratch prone plastic trash over the glass in the world!
WHY WHY WHY!!?!?
It absolutely blights the phone. *Which person is responsible for this most ridiculous decision?
Please do not try and explain this away as a health and safety issue, *you are the ONLY manufacturer in the world who ruins their beautiful phones like this. If every other manufacturer can do without, *so can you.
As the film has adhesive on it, *may I suggest you put it on the inside of the glass? *Or use Gorilla Glass like every other manufacturer.
I love the phone. *I love the Walkman app. *I love the Sony brand, *it has always resonated with quality since childhood, *ever since I first admired my aunt's age old Trinitron TV.
But I detest scratches. *And I loathe the fact that you claim the glass on the screen is scratch proof when it has a scratch prone plastic layer baked onto it which makes the phone look tatty and old after just a month of careful use.
Will I buy another Sony phone again I'd it comes with the ASF glued on the outside of the phone again?
I'm terribly sad to say never.
Complaints about this are rife in online forums. *Everybody hates it.
Please pass this email as high up the chain of command as you can. *I'm sure you have had many people complain and if enough complain, *maybe Sony will listen.
I also want you to make it. *To take Samsung's place. *You have so much more style than them and you deserve their spot there is no doubt, *but as long as you ruin your screens I'm afraid I cannot help you get there...
Best regards,
Johann Fourie

Just peel it off with a razorblade. I used the gap under the earpiece speaker as a starting point. Sony logo comes off with it (on the front) and it looks much better. Besides, the glass underneath isn't Gorilla, but it is Dragontrail, which is just as good, if not better.
edit: Windex works great to get the remaining glue residue off.
Already wrote to sony mobile sweden about it....
Do you guys add another screen protector when removing this one? Was thinking about that "glass m" branded one (google it) its a tempered glass screen protector, not plastic like rest
Sent from my C6903 using xda app-developers app
Does the screen tinting change when removing the protector?
I also read something about the glass being very prone to fingerprints/smudges and way hard to clean, is this true? Am a bit interested in trying it, even though it doesn't bother me too much atm.
