[Q] Questions about rooting, nandroid, and factory reset - Motorola Droid 3

I recently had an issue with my phone that essentially locked me out of using it. That issue has since been fixed, thanks to some great advice from a member of this forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240593
I had previously been thinking about doing at least a factory reset and then possibly also going with a custom rom. This is all new territory for me. I've done quite a bit of searching and reading on the forums here and think I have a pretty good idea of the path to follow. I'm going to list the specifics below and hopefully somebody can tell me if this is the right path and answer a couple of questions for me.
My device is a Droid 3 on Verizon Wireless running 5.7.906.XT862.Verizon.en.US. I'm using ADW as my launcher. I've never done anything custom with my phone besides installing apps from the Play store and Amazon.
It sounds like the first step I need to do is rooting my phone. I found Dan Rosenberg's motofail which sounds like it should work. It also sounds like it would be wise for me to create a nandroid backup of my phone before proceeding with a factory reset?
So I think the path I'd follow is:
-Run motofail to root the phone
-Install ClockworkMod Recovery
-Run nandroid and create a backup
-Do a factory reset using the phone's recovery boot menu.
Questions:
-Will I notice anything different with my phone after running only the motofail? Will it boot differently or anything else?
-Does ClockworkMod Recovery replace the phone's default Recovery boot menu? (I'm not really clear yet on what ClockworkMod Recovery is exactly.) If so, how do I perform the factory reset after making my nandroid backup?
Thanks for any help you can give me! There's a lot of info on these forums but it's all spread around in different places, and I want to make sure I'm piecing everything together properly before starting this process.

The only thing different after running Motofail is that you will see a Superuser app in the app drawer. Otherwise it looks exactly the same.
I haven't run Clockwork on the D3 myself - I use Safestrap - but, no, the stock recovery is still there. However, Clockwork has a menu item to do a wipe data/factory reset. It should be pretty obvious once you see it.
Again, you can also look into Safestrap rather than Clockwork. With Safestrap, you can keep your stock build and then install custom ROMs on other partition. You can also install multiple ROMs at the same time (using ROM Slots in version 3.05) and switch between them in minutes without having to do nandroid backups and restores.
I'll also suggest looking into the custom ROM Minimoto.

Does it matter what mode the USB Connection is in when I run the motofail .bat file? i.e. PC Mode, Windows Media Sync, or USB Mass Storage. I just checked with it in PC Mode and USB Mass Storage mode and adb does detect the device in both. PC Mode is the only one that allows me to properly access the encrypted files, however. Not sure if that's relevant for motofail...

I don't really remember. I don't think it does matter, because Motofail does not actually touch the SD card - it copies itself to /data/local on the phone (so, not on the SD card or "internal storage"), runs an exploit, copies busybox, su and the superuser app to the /system partition, and then removes the motofail exploit file from /data/local.
My recollection is that I just plugged in the phone and ran the exploit.

I Googled "motofail pc mode" and found a couple of other threads where people recommended setting the connection to "charge only". I did that, ran motofail, and everything worked correctly. Now I'm off to read up about safestrap.

Error Rooting CDMA Hero 2.1

I am very new to this - my first time rooting a phone. I followed the guide and everything seemed to work perfectly until I got to the step to make a Nandroid backup. I get an error: "Error : Run nandroid-mobile.sh via adb!"
I then tried re-booting without making a backup but my phone just hangs at the white HTC screen. I tried cleaning off my 2GB sd card via USB-MS toggle and deleted everything except for the files put there at the beginning of the process. But had the same error when I attempted a Nandriod backup.
Next, I tried running the backup via adb but got an error that the Device or Resource is Busy.
I really need a working phone fairly quickly and am ok without having an original backup if that is what I have to do.
Could someone please give me a hand?

1.81 GB currently. I have even tried flashing a couple of ROMS but when they finish, I choose Reboot and it still sits on the White and Green HTC screen.
Have I bricked it?

Highly doubtful.
1. Reflash your recovery image
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoveryfilename.img
2. Try a Nandroid (if it fails oh well, too late now)
3. Wipe everything under the Wipe menu when you get into it.
4. Reflash your rom
5. Reboot - It really could take up to 20 minutes some times.
if it still wont reboot:
6. Power off
7. Take the SD card out.
8. Reboot.
If it still doesn't boot post back.

-Ok, tried reflashing recovery but it said header is same, not flashing recovery.
-is the rom I need to reflash the boot-patched.zip file?
Thanks for all of your help. I don't know what happened on this one but it got hosed somewhere in the process!
Hoping I can get it running again soon as it is my only phone and I have 2 kids at home.
UPDATE
Ok-
Loaded the 1.6.2 Recovery. It allowed me to run a NAND Backup.
However, after loading the ROM I still end up locked on the White background with the Green HTC letters on it?
Any other ideas? I have not seen anything like this googling and reading forums.
Try taking the battery out for a minute. I would just reroot from scratch and follow the directions step by step.

How would I reroot from scratch? I can only get into recovery mode. Is there a way to do it that way?
Try this thread.

Me personally, I would unroot, then root all over again.

This phone had 2.1. That is a guide for older versions. Plus, I can't get into the OS to make the changes to debugging and such. I only have access to Android System Recovery.
I should also mention that the command adb devices returns a
000000000000 Recovery
Is this normal? It is in recovery mode so, I am not sure.
I am starting to think it is a brick.

[Q] urgent helped needed please

I bricked my CDMA Hero. I rooted it with the super one click, and installed a early version of froyo, and had some issues with it. I wanted to get it off, so I used CWM recovery, and formatted everything. Now when I turn it on it goes to the HTC opening screen, and stays there for hours until the battery dies. It will charge, but my computer doesn't recognize it, and it will not boot. What can I do?
Bricked means it is a brick and that is it, your phone still turns on so the good news is that it is not bricked.
Need some more info before anyone can help:
1. You reformatted everything using clockwork recovery
2. Did you re-install a new ROM?
3. Did you restore a nandroid backup?
I would recommend booting into recovery and wiping everything (factory reset and dalvik-cache) in recovery, then reinstall froyo - once you are booted and running you can figure out what you want to put on it. At least your phone would work then.

I'm also pretty sure your phone isn't bricked, as long as you can still get into Recovery, it Most Likely can be Fixed!
I also Recommend trying to Wipe Everything, then Reinstalling a New Rom, Also as a Suggestion... If it were me I'd Probably Choose a Different ROM to install! My Very First ROM I Flashed was a Cyanogen one, and I had Trouble with it Booting Also!!
Try LiquidSense... its Only 2.1, but its Stable, It Boots Fast, and just plain out Fast as Hell!
You can always Switch to Whatever you want... Once you get your phone back to a Working Condition!
Good Luck!

I cannot get it into recovery now. It will turn on, but it stops at the initial HTC screen, and stays there until the battery dies. When I connect my phone with my computer, the computer recognizes it, but I can't seem to get the 2.1 exe from HTC.com download to the phone. My guess is I wiped the thing clean. Unfortuneately, I didn't back anything up.
I can't even get into recovery, it just sits on the HTC startup screen until the battery dies. It does recognize when I connect it to my computer, but running the 2.1 exe doesn't do anything.
Can you adb into the phone and flash a recovery?
I think that would be a helpful start.

Pull the battery, hold volume down and power and you should boot into bootloader. I believe it is *home* to get you back into recovery. Then reinstall a new rom and you should be good to go.

t-y, got it. Yeah, then adb a new recovery image may be the only thing. But he may not even be able to get in then.
Just a matter of waiting right now.
He did say his computer was recognizing his device, so he might be ok.
If he can flash a new recovery, or even just adb.. then he can start rebuilding it.
stonemad:
You'll want to grab a recovery, and try to connect to your phone via ADB when it's on.
Then do adb shell
then : flash_image recover [name of recovery].img

Ok, I can get to the CWM recovery, there is no backup files, no recovery files, and no files on my sd card. I cannot seem to get an opperating system on. I mounted my phone to my computer and downloaded .zip files, but it still says no files available.
How do I flash a recovery, I can't find any files anywhere.
i have .zip files on my sd card to flash, but when I try to apply them it says no files found.
Ok, I have been working on this all day. Thank you to every body who answered. This is the situation as best as I see it. I can use the power and the down volume buttons to go to recovery mode. I have ClockworkMod 2.5 and can mount my computer to my sd card. It appears that I don't have an opperating system at all, or anything else on the phone. I have downloaded several .zip files and tried to install them, I can mount them, but when I try to apply them it states that there are no update.zip files on the sd card. I have deduced that I need an opperating system for an update to work, but I could be wrong. I am having a hard time finding the right files to use to get my phone to go. It seems salvageable, but I'm not sure how. People have sugested a couple of Mods to instal, but I don't know how to do that with what I have. CWM is asking for a update.zip, or a recovery.zip, but I don't know wich one at which time, or even how to get it to flash. That is what I think I know, but that is subject to change depening on what you all know.(showing just how foolish I really am) Thanks again people for you time and advice, I really do appreciate it.
Don't select "install update.zip", select "install zip from SD card" or whatever the option is called.
I've tried that too, it seems like all the software is gone. HTC, Sprint, Google, and Android. Does anybody have a download they think will work. I'm at the point to try anything.

What software are you talking about? Sprint, Google, and Android what, specifically? A download for what?
Mount usb storage in recovery, put rom of your choice on there, and flash?
what about kernals, how do I know that I have everything I need?
ROMs generally have kernels in the zip builds already. From the sounds of it, you're kind of lost at what you're doing.
Do you have a SD card reader? if so, plug in the SD card to your computer and pull over a ROM zip, like Cyanogenmod or whatever is to your liking.
Then in recovery, go to "install zip from sdcard"
go to "Choose zip from sdcard"
then search for the ROM zip you put on the sd card.
State exactly STEP BY STEP, what you are doing. Your phone is perfectly fine, you just dont have a ROM on your phone, which is why you cant boot. You're not missing kernels, or anything, you simply dont have the baseline of a ROM on your phone yet.
Post back
I don't know where or how to find a rom, I have heard good things about cyanogen, but can't seem to find where to download it. Is ClockworkMod a rom, and if so how do I use it. You're right, I got way in over my head, and now I just want my phone back the way I bought it. What is your favorite rom, and can you give me a link. Thanks again everyone.

Droid 3 seems to be unbrickable

I've tried many different things in alot of the threads I've read on this forum and nothing is working. I tried using the One-Click root on my Droid and it didn't work, come to find out, it was an outdated method for the Droid 3. It messed up my phone. My apps constantly crash. My texts disappear, then sometimes reappear switching the place of the texts randomly. When I reset from settings, it restarts phone, but nothing is reset. It won't let me check my e-mails(G-mail). I can hardly do anything. I've tried flashing back using the AP Fastboot method from psouza(spelling?). On my phone it says Battery OK/Program OK/USB Connected. So I run the "CLICK HERE - Flash Verizon DROID 3 OTA 5.6.890 to phone.bat". It failed.
Then I tried ovelayers method. Everything seems to go good. And I was happy! But when it rebooted, it took me to the android triangle screen. SO I selcected reboot. And absolutely nothing changed. Am I Missing a step? I also tried doing it again, but after it went to traingle android screen, I selected the update from the SD card, installed it, rebooted, and STILL nothing. Nothing changes. Ever. Nothing is working. Please help. I tried being as descriptive as possible so that it answers most potential questions.
*Edit* I've also tried the RDS Lite method. Crashes on step 3.

I have the full system file already. That's what I tried using to update. The problem doesn't lie there though. The problem is that no matter what I do, the phone never resets. It's on right now. If I uninstall apps right now and restart my phone, they'll still be there. Likewise with installing them. If I text anyone, when I restart my phone, that conversation will be gone. Likewise with call logs and everything else. The phone literally after every restart goes back to the same position it was when I badly rooted the first time. No resets, recoveries, hard resets, flashes, etc have worked thus far. I've used ALL the one click SBF versions also, just to be thorough. The phone literally will not change. What I need is something similar to a computer. I need to completely wipe it. Then I need to completely reinstall it from scratch. Just like reformatting your hard drive. I've heard that there has really been no case of an unbrickable phone, that there is always a way to fix it; but this far, I haven't found anybody that hasn't had their phone fixed. Even those that have had similar issues fixed it, and I've tried the methods they've provided to no avail.

I will attempt that now. How is it used? I can build pc's and am rather intelligent in the IT of macs and pc's. But haven't had to do much with Androids till now. Lol. *EDIT* It's installed, it has bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery. Reboot does nothing. Bootstrap says there's an error running a command. Looks like a directory about files and hashcodes. "Working Directory: null/Environment: null".

Open bootstrap, press bootstrap recovery, afterwards press reboot recovery.

So you did wipe/factory reset from recovery and it still boots like nothing happened? I'm not sure how thats possible.. stock recovery shouldnt have anything to do with what you messed up in your rom. Maybe for some reason your phone is unable to write data anymore

Just saw your vid and its exactly as you say. I don't know whats going wrong..
Writing yo your internal might not be the same as writing to your data partition.. I don't see why else wiping from recovery would fail since that part should be unaffected.
You said sbf says its succesful however on your screenshot i see errors.

Internal SD card behaving strangely - Please Help

In short: Canceled Factory Reset, Now my SD card is not being detected properly and I am unable to format/mount it in recovery
Hey Everyone,
I've recently created quite a frustrating problem on my HTC Vivid that I'm unable to figure out. While attempting to go into CWM Recovery to check what version I have I accidentally selected Factory Reset from the bootloader. I quickly pulled the battery, as my back cover was off, within a second or two of this selection, and to my knowledge the phone was still on the bootloader screen and hadn't begun the process. After rebooting into my ROM and I attempted to install TWRP Recovery via Goo Manager in preparation for flashing a new ROM. After the download timer expired my Goo Manager crashed. Any attempt to install via Goo Manager since then is giving me this error, or it just hangs at the download web page. I suspect that this is because of the botched Factory Reset I mentioned earlier, and I'm worried I've somehow messed up the internal SD. My internal sd card is not detected by the camera app nor correctly seen in my file manager, in settings it is reported at the correct size, but apparently all my media has been deleted. I'm unable to format/mount ext sd or emmc in Recovery. My questions are: Has my sd card been corrupted, and If so, why did all my apps and user data remain? Secondly, how can I remedy this situation? I should mention that my phones data port is basically unusable, so I am unable to connect my device to a PC and use adb/fastboot.
My recovery is CWM 5.5.0.4 and my ROM is CM-10.2 | AOSP 4.3.1 Jellybean [KANG] [Oct-31] My phone is unlocked and S-OFF
Update: I tried to Factory Reset, thinking maybe what got me into this mess would get me out, but that option just takes me into recovery. This leaves me even more puzzled. I followed that up with a factory reset/davlik cache wipe from recovery but that hasn't done anything either. My conclusion thus far is that I need to somehow reformat my internal storage, is that possible without connecting my phone to a pc?
Thank you for any responses, and taking the time to read this.
I inadvertently hit the factory reset once from the boot loader and it did the reset in just a few seconds. It hosed my internal memory and unfortunately had to run the ruu to fix it. I know that is not what you want to hear if you can't connect it to a computer.

Seriously?
I have answered this question literally 100 times...
Please use the search feature...
Or at least scroll down and read thread titles...
And if your port is borked... Replace it

I did a forum search, I was unable to find a satisfactory answer so I started my own thread. (All were referring to using some method of connecting the phone to a PC)
If anyone is wondering, I solved my problem by simply doing a reset/data wipe via recovery and reflashing my ROM. During setup it prompted me to format my internal storage and now my phone is behaving as normal.

[Q] LG L90 D315 bricked without recovery access etc

So this is my first xda thread. I spent hours searching without finding a solution for my particular case.
I am using a LG L90 D415 (T-Mobile version) and I got bored of it and so I started playing with the system (not the first phone I'm doing that with, so I know a bit about that sutff). So I tried to install the new Android L home launcher from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2796019
I did everything like explained, installed it and changed the build.prop like described. But after I rebooted my phone, expecting a new home launcher, the phone boots, I am at the lockscreen, but after like 4 seconds I receive multiple errors (like gapps stopped working) and than everything freezes and it reboots.
Unfortunaly I didn't install a recovery or unlocked fastboot. So I can access download mode, but that's it. My computer doesn't see my phone (because usb debugging deactivated?) and so I don't know what to do. I think that's a pretty tough case but I hope some smart person can help me
Thank you

No custom recovery and no fastboot? Factory reset is your only option. See this post. Scroll down to Q14. Even though it's titled something else, the same button presses apply for your device in it's current state, ie; no recovery, no fastboot

First thanks for the fast answer. So I figuered that I only need to delete the build.prop file and replace it with my backup file. Isn't there any way to rescue my files and/or access the /system folder? I'm an exchange student now and I don't wanna lose my picture memories
And btw I know that I build the perfect worst case scenario right now
Oh and in the L90 faq it says that when you flashed a recovery and you navigate to factory reset it won't reset but boot into recovery. Does something like this work even without recovery, so I could try doing stuff with adb?

If adb isn't detecting the phone, no. There isn't any other way.

Unfortunately, no.
Factory reset will not erase your sdcard. It will however erase internal data. It will return the phone to the state it was in the first time it was powered on.
