What's wrong with my battery..

My G1 has been acting real funny lately. I can charge it fully to 100% and if I am on a phone call and it is uncharged it will just shut off even though I have plenty of battery left. It won't reboot either until I wait about 15 minutes and than it shows that I have like 45% left when I just had 100%. I even reverted back to stock and it is still turning off during calls. Anyone know how to fix this?

Try recailbrating your battery

Alright do I just let it die?

Have you taken the battery out to make sure its not bulging or anything? My phone was doing the same thing, turned out the battery was on its way out and had a big lump in the middle.

If you sit with your phone charging on a comp all night, with wifi tether on, playing WOW it will mess up your battery... Try not to overcharge your battery.. (leaving it plugged in for extended amounts of time) and try not to used crappy chargers... The charger in the work truck and my house cheapy barely charges my G1, But my OEM Magic charger does the job in half the time..

Does your phone get hot charging USB?

Please, I'd like to see feedback from people on what circumstances people are seeing their phone get hot charging USB. If your phone gets hot on a USB charge, try powering down the phone completely and then charge on USB, does it still get hot?
And please, if your phone gets hot on USB charge, post how you're charging, your ROM, and how hot does it get? There are many applications for this. I use Battery Snap, you can use any program you like. If you don't have a program, please don't guess at the poll, but feel free to post results in a reply.
Also one would assume ambient temperature in the room is typical, but if yours is not (<20c, >28c) please post that information too.
Please answer the poll by the typical range of temperature your phone gets on a USB charge. I'd suggest charging around the 50-60% mark to get more consistent results.. For example charging if the phone is at 95% wouldn't be useful information etc..
One more slight constraint; if your phone gets hot "one time" but not other times, I'm inclined to think there was something else going on with the phone at that time. If your phone is consistently hot when charging USB then post results here.

I charged my phone off my Dell M6400's docking station today, started the charge after pulling the phone out of my horizontal case and the phone was 29.5C, I looked multiple times at the highest I saw it was 31.3, and most of the time 31.1. Using Battery Snap for the data. Started charge at 80%, as that's what charge it was from this morning until 4pm when I started I do not have USB Debug enabled by default on my phone, nor did I have mass storage.. When I got the mount prompt I just hit the back button.
Phone is about neutral to the touch, slightly cool. Normally when it's on my desk like this it's fairly cold to the touch, so I'll have to update later when I've put the phone in the same place without charging, but I'm guessing it's a few degrees warmer on the charger than off of it.
I'll repeat this a bit over the weekend here too as I have time, this time I'll set the phone sit on the desk for a while first, check temperature, then charge.
Please do post when you provide input on the poll so we know the circumstances... I mean, if your computer room is 35C and your phone gets 40C charging, I think that's reasonable My office here is around 24-25C.

Charged again today from about 75%, house is around 23C (wife likes it cold..meh) and the phone was 27C max charging on USB.

My AT&T Nexus One purchased June 2 from Google overheats and reboots.
Here's what I've found out:
I charge with the original AC Adapter and this only happens when I'm charging and the battery is LESS than 40%.
If the battery is 50% or higher, it's fine.
When the Battery is less than 45%ish, the phone gets hotter and hotter, from 33C up to 39.3C (is what I last see), then it will SHUTDOWN AND REBOOT. When it reboots, it would be about 37-38C. If it's still under 45%, temp will keep rising again, till 39.3% and REBOOT again, takes about 5-10 minutes for this to happen.
Weird thing is, if you pop the battery out and FEEL it, IT IS NOT HOT AT ALL. It's the DAMN phone that OVERHEATS.
2 nights ago, I was charging and reading in bed. IT DID THIS 3 TIMES IN A FREAKING ROW.
7AM EST, I called HTC, and doing a Device Swap.
Have not received my replacement unit yet. Funny thing is, HTC told me they send out device swaps of JUST THE PHONE, no battery no battery cover. So I have to keep my battery and battery cover. And I told them about my overheat/charging/battery issue, and they said if it still happens to mine, they can send me a new battery.
Anyways I will be testing the replacement unit with my battery and make sure it's VERY low to see if it overheats and reboots.
Other info: This happened in OFFICIAL STOCK FRF91. I'm currently running CyanogenMOD 6 RC1.

Hmm, yeah that sounds like hardware problems to me.. Curious, what are you using to measure? I'd assumed the battery temp stuff was really the battery, not .. something else?
In my case when my phone is cool, the whole phone is cool, not just blindly looking at numbers of course.

Again, would the folks voting really high temps try the things in my first post, and let us know what the ambient temperature of the room is, how hot the phone feels vs the measurement, what's being used to measure it... But particularly I'm curious if totally powering down the phone makes the problem go away.

Dial *#*#INFO#*#* then select Battery Information. It will tell you temperatures there. But I think the temps there is phone temp not batt temp, since in my case when it days 39.3C and I pull the batt, it feels less hot than the phone itself.
Also for my case, it does get hot and reboot while USB charging. Reported 3 time in a row again yesterday and I got pissed and HAD to turn the phone off.
Anyways, waiting for my replacement u from HTC.

Well got my replacement Nexus One today, serial number is higher than my 1 month old Nexus One.
I got it go to up to 39.8C and it did not shutdown and reboot, but stuff started crashing.
Music playing would stop, then if I try to start the song again or choose another one, Music app would Force Close.
Started Navigation app and that right away FC.
Anyone experiencing this?

I think you are using a goofy USB cable, or your room is HOT. Because the only time I've had my phone overheat, I was at a pool, in the sun. The phone's temp was 45 c also. I could still use it, but it was burning hot. An app notified me of the temp (I had it set that way) and I turned the phone off.

I'm using both the original AC adapter and usb cables from google.
Also AC has been on it's under 80F in the room.
The other day on the unit that keep rebooting, when I was navigating, i had to hold it up to the AC vent while i was driving to be able to use it... lol... sigh.

I usually only charge on ac but i think i can easily hit 37-39 while charging for over 30 minutes. Its has been up to 40.5 before i think but there were no crashes or anything. everything was stable (its hot but not enough to be seriously scared or anything)
the room at night is around 24? varies alot but the phone also sits on my bed and/or pillow/blanket. try not to cover it when i sleep.

Am on ICS THS B16 with ICY GLITCH 14 B5 kernel..
I found this few mins back on my Cappy..
I had around 30% charge in my cappy and when i plugged in, i felt the warm on the back door while its charging.. It took around 1 1/2 hrs to Reach 80%..
Now When the device showed 90%, the back door is so chill cos of my climate here.. but still its charging...
Is it Normal?
Or The Charging thingi stopped in the OS and showing fake %???

What's the issue exactly? It's normal for a phone to get hot while charging

The issue is that.
As you said The device gets hotter while in charger...
But here it does not when its at 90% and it does till 89%

Oh wait, I think I read this somewhere. I vaguely remember reading that the battery will fast-charge until it reaches a certain threshold (like 80% or possibly 90%?), where it begins to trickle charge so it doesn't overcharge or something. I could be completely wrong; I might be referencing something completely different but maybe it's somehow relevant. Either way, I really wouldn't worry about your charging temperature unless it's getting really, REALLY hot.

Is this when using an outlet to charge the phone or a usb port on your computer? I've noticed different charge speed between the two.
I've also capped my charging at 90% because I've heard that charging to 100% isn't great for long-term battery life.

This is the exact reason. Li-Ion batteries can be damaged by keeping them at 100% charge or letting them get down to nearly 0% charge, so when batteries get to 90% they'll trickle charge. This is a normal safety procedure and all phones do it in some way or another - some phones will charge to 100% and then discharge slightly to hold at 90-95%
This is also why you should:
1. NEVER EVER let your battery go down to 0%
2. NEVER EVER use the charge to 100% - unplug, re-calibrate cycle to bypass this safety system that people post on here on a semi regular basis.

Charging problem

So my HTC One does something really weird sometimes and im afraid if this keeps going on something bad will happen to it.
since i got 5 months ago this has happened like 4-5 times. and i charge it every night. so, sometimes when I charge it and go to bed I wake up and check the phone and even though it was charging when I left it it has only charged for like 20% and even though its connnected to the charger the charging icon wont show. plus the phone is too hot. and i dont mean warm or hot on the back. I mean too hot to touch everywhere, not only the back. Everywhere it has aluminium its too hot. this has only happened 4-5 times and I immediately take it off the charger wait a bit to cool off and then start charging it again and everything is fine. While its hot no warnings pop up and the phone works just fine, but its extremely hot and even though its connected to the charger it doesnt charge. why is that?

Hey,
This might be a problem with the charger.
Try using the original charging set provided with the phone.
Is there anything you do with the phone that may be considered out of the normal when you charge it?
Worst-case scenario, this might be a hardware fault. In that case you should be able to claim it under warranty.

Something similar happens to me on occasion. It'll be plugged in but when viewing in/out mah, it actually shows it's draining. Less than when it was unplugged, but still draining although it says ac plugged in. (using battery monitor to view btw). When it does that, and it's left plugged in (like overnight), it's abnormally hot when I check it. I have to unplug it and then plug it back in (sometimes a few times) before charging levels go back to norm.

It happened on me for 1 or 2 times as well, the only different is mine is not really hot. After i flashed custom rom, it seems everything is fine. I guess maybe there are some bugs in the original rom. Now i am using the rom based on google edition. Good luck

I am using the original charger and it does this but it also have done this with a samsung charger i have used some times. something else that I noticed is that when I'm charging and using the phone sometimes the battery percentage drops.

I have this phone for one month and three weeks. I notice my phone battery usage seems to drop from 100% to 90% quite quickly, but slows down after that. Another thing, I plug my HTC charger and than plug it out, the battery increases by one percent magically. I plug it back in and than it drops by like 4% or 1%.
For example, I had my phone charged at 98%. I unplug the charger and it increases by 1%, so it is on 99% now. I plug the charger back into the phone and it drops to 95%. I did this again when it charges to 99%, same thing happened.
So can anyone help me out here?

Estimating battery charge level is very hard, especially when there is also a current draw from it.
Leave it to charge for longer after it has gone green and stop worrying about it.

as BenPope wrote, leave it for a while with green light..
same happens to me...if i take it immediately once it hit 100%, I will drop to 97% in 5min

Thank you for the response. I heard that once the led light goes green during charging, I should pull the plug straight away from the phone. Does this help to prevent battery from deteriorating quickly? I know that the phone's lithion battery prevent cases of overcharging, but can it still be subjected to killing the battery life faster. Thank you once again.

don't know about that just thought u could probably try let your battery drain completely and put it on charge after

The One wont let your phone overcharge, as you said, so theres no need to worry about leaving it plugged in.
As others said, eventhough your phone says 100% and the light goes green, this doesnt mean your phones actually topped off. Leave it in for 10 minutes after the light goes green and the quick drop from 100 to 90 that you mentioned will stop occuring. I can verify that this works.

I see. I left the phone charge for 20mins more and it fixed the rapid battery drain issue. Guess I should stop thinking too much about it.
