a while ago i bought an original Samsung smart desktop dock.
the one with 3xusb, hdmi, and audio ports.
one interesting feature it has is desktop mode, when you attach a mouse it disables the phone's screen and sets all automatically rotating apps to landscape.
there is just 1 minor problem with it: this desktop mode causes a performance drop, enough to lower your 3dmark score by 10%.
i first noticed this issue when plugging in my mouse suddenly made games in ppsspp(psp emulator) run much worse than they usually do (58fps dropped to 40fps)
today i decided to test it with 3dmark and i got a clear difference in scores:
default screen mirroring: 3293
desktop mode: 2976
especially the physics tests got a rather big hit in performance.
it's rather strange that supplying images to 1 big screen at 1080i takes more effort than doing the same with a big 1080i and a small 720p screen.

Anyway, I'm looking to get a new Android device and I'm think I'm going to get the new Sony Xperia Z. The only problem is that I can't get a real device to test it (for just like 30 minutes). Anyway, I've watched a bunch of reviews and read many articles so I good to go, except for one thing - I want to know how much the phone heats when it's running at 100%.
I've already seen some threads here on XDA, but they are mostly subjective (temperatures are mentioned as warm and hot). I would like to get more objective result. If you own a Xperia Z device, you can help me - it won't take too much of your time
Anyway, here is what I'm proposing as a more objective test:
1) Download and install StabilityTest i System Tuner. You can get them in the Play Store.
2) Close all running apps. Run System Tuner. Open Settings -> Recording preferences -> Items to record and check CPU frequency and CPU temperature.
3) Go to the main menu of the System Tuner app and click icon named "Start" (upper right corner). Now the app is logging the in CPU frequency and temperature. Click on CPU icon and not your current temperature.
4) Leave System Tuner running in the background and open StabilityTest. Click on the first button (Classic Stability test). Leave it running for at least 20 minutes.
5) After at least 20 minutes have passed, you can close StabilityTest and stop recording in the System Tuner. The log will be saved on you SD card in the folder pwm/recordings. Please attach it in you post
Please post your battery percentage before you have started StabilityTest and after you've closed it. Also, please post whether you did the test with you phone on or off the charger.

You don't need all this benchmarks because its common sense really. I have the device, on normal operations e.g. browsing, videos etc.. it doesn't get hot, but a bit warm near the rear camera. But, if you do intensive tasks e.g. playing a game e.g. nova 3 etc.. then it gets a bit more hot, but not so much to burn your hands. This is normal because think about the horse power this phone has in a slim form factor and all the heat that gets generated without any cooling fans. Its normal but its not normal if it goes beyond the range of operations, which in my case, I have not noticed. I had a Motorola Droid the keyboard version, that device got extremely hot and it was really uncomfortable to hold.
As a user, I am very pleased with this smartphone and ofcoz it has drawbacks then again no phone is perfect. Hope this helps what you looking for without benchmarks

Transitioning from a low end HTC Incredible S, I found it very unusual how the phone got warm by just going through the user interface.
then i ran qualcomm trepn profiler and it showed that my 1st cpu core was doing anything between 1ghz and 1.5ghz at any given time.
possibly fixed with a kernel tweak?

It should be common sense, but I've read about Xperia Z on many pages. And some users say that it only gets warm, others say it's hot when gaming and some say that it's running too hot. Maybe some of them do have defective units, so this test would be also great for comparison between units. Can you run the test? You don't even need to run it for 20 minutes, 10 should be enough. Or if you won't/can't do the test, can you at least just check in the System Tuner if Xperia Z has CPU temperature sensor - if it doesn't have one then I can stop searching for people who own it.
P.S. Can somebody say if Xperia Z is running hotter or colder than Samsung Galaxy S2?

I have a dlock mhl adapter and its working fine for my lg optimus 3d max but when i use it with my z1 it is exactly 50% slower as normal. When i.e. i play on ppsspp every game run @ 50%. I tryed setting the gov. To performance .. no change at all. Exactly 50%. Also the xperia launcher seem significantly slower. Is there a way to disable the phone functions so it is only using the performance for the tv and not the phpne display. I read somewhere somebody had a similar issue but he either has full speed but no sound or full sound and half speed. In my case i would not be bothered by no sound and full speed because ppsspp does not emulate the sound good. actually if i pull the plug on mhl while gaming the speed turns imstantly to 100%.. a and please dont try the screen off app from the market .. this screws up everthing. So if someone has an idea on this issue i would be greatful. Ah i am using the latest ihackers rom- (nice one btw)

I'm using Z3+ with latest firmware on it (downloaded it with wi-fi). I've mentioned terrible thing, as i suppose. When I browse internet, and watch youtube while charging the phone, the average processor temperature is 55-60, but it sometimes rises to 76 and than drops down.
Tell me please, is that normal temperature for the phone processor? Won't it harm the processor or another phone components?

The heat is wasted energy, most CPU are inefficient and generate heat.
I have a Z2 and a Z3+ (and previously iPhones for 5 years) - the Zs are definitely "hot" compared to the iPhones but the melting point of silicon and solder is quite high (maybe 150C or more).
Remember the days when laptops were too hot to put on your lap? Those machines still work fine today.
So I don't think the device will be harmed from internal heat (aside from more quickly revealing dry joints perhaps) but it may feel warm in your hand compared to other phones. The way I hold mine, I barely notice, all the heat is in an area above my hand. I only notice if the phone was working hard and then I put it straight in my pocket.
FWIW both the Z2 and Z3+ shutdown the camera app after about 30 minutes continuous 1080P recording, however using alternate apps (Better Camera, Google Camera) I have been able to record 1080P for an hour before I got bored and stopped it.
My Z2 records 4K for about 5 minutes, my Z3+ records 4K for about 15 minutes.
It's only the native camera app shuts down to cool off, I guess the image processing works the SoC harder than alternate apps/api.
tl;dr - yes I think it's normal and things won't hurt the silicon and solder until 150 celsius or more - the phone would become unstable first anyway as the CPU mis-computes due to heat.
I think it doesen't matter because it may be occur but if it dont hamper your device then no need to worry about this .Some device like
modem ,laptop and other smart device become heat for a long time use .Thats why dont worry .
I decided to download Asphalt 8 last night to see how the Note 5 handles it, initially it looked good but after 20 seconds or so the frame rate slowed down considerably - I would guess less than 10 frames a second. I uninstalled it, cleared the cache, reinstalled but still the same issue. This is on High settings which is the default setting. It's like the phone starts to throttle after a short amount of time racing?
Is anyone else playing Asphalt 8, have you seen anything similar?
I downloaded AnTuTu bench and was getting over 60,000 which seems in line with other Note 5's and 3D Mark also seems to match up so i'm not sure if this is just Asphalt 8 or a bigger problem.
I installed CPU-z so I could monitor temperature and if I check it when the game is running slow the Exynos reports around 60c which doesn't seem that high?
i've only tried it on my S6e without any noticeable issues. do you have Power Saving mode off?

Yup both power saving modes are definitely off.
There are drops in some games after minutes of gameplay, that because of Samsung TW DVFS, which basically monitors and throttles the CPU way too fast.
If u have root, u can set cpu govenor to performance when playing, that will eliminate all the lag, that what i do.
Hi all, I have been thinking lately about moving to WQHD resolution instead of the FHD that I'm already on. Can someone please share the battery impact and the actual screen sharpness? I have always maintained that the smaller the screen the more difficult it is to discern the actual difference between FHD and WQHD. Surely, the difference is day and night on larger screen sizes i.e. 50 inches and above. Is it really the case on our screens too? I'm on adaptive refresh rate and plan to keep it as is.

Not much of a difference in battery , may be like 30 mins of less SOT.
Gpu takes a bit of more load , and thus the overall graphics might be like 5-10% slow .
Thats my opinion, might be different for others
The difference is nearly imperceptible, wouldn't worry too much about both WQHD+ and adaptive refresh rate
Buying a phone at this price but not using the highest possible resolution is quite useless

I tried both WQHD+ and FHD+ with adaptive refresh rate on for a few days each - but I couldn't discern any significant differnce in battery life with day to day usage. I'm not saying there wasn't any... common sense dictates that there must be some, but I wansn't able to appreciate it.
I was very hard pressed to tell the differnce between the two resolutions on my screen as well. When I went down to HD+, I could immediately detect the drop in quality. But between FHD and WQHD I couldn't tell initially. Over time, i leatnt to discern the differnce up close (really close) becasue I knew what to look for - but the difference was not very big. So I tested it out on my family members, and not a single person could tell the difference with confidence (none are tech nerds) - all they said is "Wow! nice screen, what do you want me to look for? Looks the same as before..."
But this was all done in the first 2 weeks since I bought the phone, so usage was erratic and frenzied. I hadn't settled into a regular routine with the phone, it being all new and shiny - installing and uninstalling new apps, tinkering around etc - so i don't think I can honestly testify as to the battery life difference between FHD and WQHD.
But I can definitely tell that my eyes found it very difficult to tell the difference in quality, even today. So I just kept it on FHD+ and forgot about it till I came across your post. Maybe it's time to try out the experiment again with a more settled down phone... as I sit here typing this on WQHD resolution, trying to imagine if the FHD+ looked any different 15 minutes ago.

I tried it and didn't see much difference so keeping it at wqhd and adaptive.
Same with 4g and 5g in my area.
Everything is on adaptive. 5g and wqhd.
Go on and use it. That's why you paid for the phone, if you don't use the feature s what's the point?
Just use the best possible resolution. No point getting a phone like this and turn things off is how i look at it.
70% of the time, on my phone: I'm just messaging/calling or using the browser to view text-based content with a few images here and there.
30% of the time: HD Video, photos, camera, video-calls, etc.
So, I do this:
(1) Remove Animations (under Accessibility or just use Finder/search to locate it) -- because I don't need
(2) Force Dark in Developer Options (goes away after a reboot, so just reactivate this).
(3) Keep the phone in 720p60fps, full-temperature Comfort Shield, Power Saving mode, AOD off, Limit CPU to 70%, Decrease brightness by 10%, etc.
(4) Use a Bixby Routine to go into and come out of this low-quality mode as desired.
(5) I have all deviceidle and other power saving settings turned off.
