My HTC One seems to have developed an issue with it not being able to detect headphones in the headphone socket.
It happened within a couple of hours, I was using the same set of headphones earlier, working fine, nothing changes, go to insert them later, no detection...
I've installed SoundAbout and that lets me change the output to the headphone port to listen to music, so I've got a work around (I'm away atm, so can't send the phone back for another week).
I was wondering if this was a common issue? Or whether I've done something wrong...
Oh yes, I've rebooted and tried a different set of headphones which are "known good" to no avail.
Thanks,
Berny

I have a similar issue - I got my One on Sunday from Carphone Warehouse in the UK, and the headphone socket has yet to recognise any head phones, including the ones in the box. Quite annoying as it took six weeks for them to get hold of a black one. Everything else is fine. I have mailed HTC via the support website but have no idea what their support is like. I can't find a bunch of complaints so it's either something rare, or a non issue and I've missed something obvious.

Well that was just see if they might reply saying "try this" or "this will be fixed in an update". Optimistic, I know. Evidently your advice is sound however, as I have just received a reply that indicates they have not really thought the issue through:
" I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with the headphone jack not working.
The reason for this is could be down to multiple factors, to enable me to identify and resolve the issue we will need to go through some troubleshooting and eliminate some of the possible causes.
To resolve this, I would like you to perform the following steps:
Soft reset your device.
To do this you will need to remove the battery while the phone id turned on, for 20 seconds, replace then turn back on and test the device.
If signal returns and then drops shortly after then it will be an issue with the software.
Factory reset your device
WARNING: A factory reset will delete all of your data, including text messages, contacts and applications it is therefore extremely important that a back up has been completed and the SD card removed before conducting the reset.
From the Home screen
Press Menu Key
Go to Settings
Tap SD and Phone Storage
Tap Factory Data Reset
Tap Reset Phone
Tap Erase Everything
If your device is still experiencing issue after a factory reset then it may be a hardware issue...."
It goes on, but yes back to CPW for a replacement I guess - I will factory reset it and check the socket before I hand it back. If I get any joy with that I'll report back.
Just hoping it doesn't take another 6 weeks to get another black one. This one was unlocked as well, so I was quite pleased with that.
If it's faulty you can ask for a refund. I think all CPW phones are SIM free. I got mine from P4U sim free

It now happened for the third time: The phone is up and running but when an incoming call is received it does not ring at all and the microphone + speaker is also not working (muted) - basically there is no audio at all though you can take and end the call.
Once the phone is in this state alarms and sound notifications are no longer working as well, after a soft reset everything was fine again.
I wonder if I'm the only user who has experienced this kind of issue.

well foo, i got it to, but i had the same problem wuth my diamond as well, it went away with tge officual rom update, so ill guess well have to wait foor the rom upgrade this time to.
Ah okay - at least I'm not alone with this issue, good to know.
It seems this problem is not a common problem, as I do not read any other posts regarding this issue in the Xperia section. Though I found a thread in the Diamond section that exactly describes my problem.
As HTC stated the problem is related to a hardware issue, I returned mine now. I'm lucky that Amazon.de just returned me the money (completely) so I can buy another one in the next days.
It seems I am having this problem with my X1i. I am in the US and the Sony Ericsson support centre in the UK is telling me that I would have to pay for shipping to and from the UK Sony Repair centre.
The following web page suggests I am eligible for international support and repairs, but I called the US Sony Ericsson line and they told me that since the X1 was not released here yet, that I would not be able to receive support in the US for the X1 (either for getting it repaired or a replacement unit).
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup...endedserviceoffertailoredforx1/x1?cc=gb&lc=en
I would send it back to superetrader.co.uk and get a replacement that way, but they do not have any in stock and given delays in shipments in the UK I am hesitant to send it back and wait for new stock.
I am going to try going into a Sony Style store sometime this week and show them my "Travelers service" card and see if they can get it fixed here. Does anyone have any other suggestions I might try?
bluetooth problem with carkit and audio off
I folks,
i do also have the same problem. I have a SE BT car kit HCB 300 and it is just annoying, that it does not work proper. Sometimes BT works, sometimes not, sometimes i have to restart the phone, sometimes ... just annoying.
A lot of times Xperia recognizes the 300, then i am calling somebody, phone is giving signal to the 300, but after a few seconds, audio is off again.
After that audio is not working anymore.
Could it be, that your problems are also caused by the known BT problem?
Ingo
Exactly same problem
Exactly the same problem as foo.
If you remove and replace battery, sometime problem is solve, sometime no.
Soft reset solve the problem.
I made hardware reset + flash xperia but no solution.
I returned mine and bought a new one that does not have this issue. It really seems to be a hardware issue.

It could be, although I have not paired with a BT headset since buying it, and in addition I have hard reset the phone and put it in airplane mode (no RF at all) and the audio still manages to completely die where only a Soft Reset will restore the sound (as noted by x1inside).
Depending on the amount of time I leave the phone sometimes the phone after playing some music for 5 seconds will stutter and restore sound. This is similar to the description in the Touch Diamond thread that foo linked. Also when this stutter sound restores, as noted in that thread, the reception indicator in the system tray indicates that the signal is temporarily lost and then restored.

Thanks for letting us know, good to have this confirmed so when I visit the store or send it to Sony Ericsson repair centre, I can refer them to this thread.
well i also have the same problem with my x1.
reseting it dosent work, flashing it with new rom dosent work.
But i cant understand how the problem would be in the hardware, when you reset it it starts working! i mean if it was a hardware problem the sound should be of all the time?
Is there ant possibility if this is a software problem, i mean WindowsMobile 6.1, because my dad complaining the same behavior yesterday, and his device is Samsung Omnia.
Do all WM6.1 effected?
I got the X1a in the US. No problem here. When there is an incoming call and I was on the phone then it will beep to let me know if I want to answer or inorge. If I answer then it will put other call on hold till finish talking then connect me back to the first caller.
My x1 is also affected by this audio problem. If I restart my phone sound output works for some minutes and turns automatically off as the other users reported.
Same problem here just got an X1 and the sound works perfect after leaving it a short while the sound completely stops working no music, notifications or anything. By the sounds of it I think I will send mine back to O2 and get a replacement, although it does seem more like some sort of software fault than hardware to me, like the previous post why would it be corrected by a soft reset every time. If anyone has any suggestions before I send this thing back I will be happy to try them.
I returned my x1 and after 5 weeks of "repairing" I got called and they said it cannot be repaired and I got a brand new phone.
I had that exact same problem. I'd leave my phone alone for a while and then when I came back to it a few hours later, it would have no audio at all. I could make a call, the other person could hear me but I couldn't hear them and it wouldn't audibly alert me to anything...
I couldn't pin it down to any particular circumstances but it was always resolvable with a soft-reset. A hard-reset didn't cure the issue either. I just sent it back in the end. My current one is fine although I have now upgraded the ROM to the latest one.
I do have one outstanding issue though and that's that when sending a text, it sends immediately, flashes up the bubble saying msg sent, but the vibrate from sending the message will come about 10 minutes after or it'll do it when I turn the screen back on. It's not a biggie but it's a bit weird.
scarey
I have the same prob, but its strange that when pushing the MS-Voice-Controll button the beep comes and everything works perfekt again.
So I don´t need to soft oder hard reset, but it drives me crazy not knowing whether my alarms or notifications do work or not. BUT: I cant believe its a hardware problem.
same problem...
With 3-4 custom rom...
I'm trying with orginal ROM...
Any news?
Ok, first off I just want to say I have searched around the forums for a similar problem in hopes for a solution and to avoid reposting a question.
For information about my phone, see below the problem description.
Here is the problem:
This just started today, the phone will not play any ringtone or notification sound. I can confirm the speaker itself still works by playing music or choosing ringtones. Alarms do still work, just not call tones or notification tones(even using default ones).
Now that is only part of the problem, along with that, is the fact that when a text message is received, I can view it and dismiss it (Using Handcent as Default). But 30 seconds to a minute after getting the message, or usually while replying to it, the screen will go black and the capacitive buttons stay lit up. No button presses are registered and the only way to gain access into the phone is by removing the battery and putting it back in.
I am also not getting every message sent to me, some will come through while others don't.
Another unrelated issue:
If I wait an extended time between listening to music, usually 20+ hours, for the first minute or so I hear a little bit of static and then it clears up and doesn't happen until the next day.
Info about the phone:
I bought the phone new on eBay at the end of September, the 28th.
The only modification done to it is doing the latest VooDoo lagfix from the link below(I did this within two weeks of having the phone, and it worked fine):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170
Aside from that, the phone is completely stock running the latest OTA update.
I am using a GoPhone SIM card that has never given me any issues before.
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.10
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Build: ECLAIR.UCJH7
Baseband: I897UCJH7
My Background
This is only my second Android phone, coming from the myTouch 3g. I have had the same SIM card for years. Now I have the Captivate, and this is the first time it has given me this kind of problem. I have experience flashing ROM's and all that, I just wanted to wait for an official update for the Captivate to see if GPS gets improved.
I hope I have provided enough information to diagnose the problem, let me know if there is anything else you need to know and thanks for your time.
Side note if this can't be resolved with you guys:
Would I be able to call up Samsung and get a replacement from them?

Probably why it was sold on Ebay in the first place. Just a shot in the dark, maybe the speaker connection is loose? There are a few threads about taking the phone apart if you are so inclined.
Can't see how it would be a warranty, you bought it through a third party. Could always try.

I did think something like that at first, but every other sound works fine and when it is supposed to(startup sounds, games, etc.). And I would think if it's a loose connection that shaking the phone or moving it around would make sound cut out, but it doesn't.
I figured the manufacturer warranty wouldn't apply, but I have gotten warranty replacements in the past on other electronics from eBay. So maybe a little fibbing will be in order to receive another unit.
I'm thinking it is something software, I have no clue what, I haven't made any major software additions or changes since yesterday. But if all else fails I will try changing to a different ROM and if that fails, get a replacement from Samsung.
I would try flashing again.....and running that kernel....kinda makes your phone far from stock...
For some reason the issue has stopped. I only did a few things, I powered off the phone, turned it on with the 3-button combo, and then restarted the phone from that menu. After the restart, I reassigned the notification tones and ringtones to what they were(my personal choices, not system sounds) and it seems to work.
I will probably wait a few days to see if it occurs again, and if it does, I will move on to a ROM from the Dev section because I am convinced its just some apps conflicting with each other.

I figured that was a minor modification, so i just counted it as stock, but I see what you're saying.
My girlfriend's N1 has gradually developed some problems. At first the headphones were not being recognized properly. Then camera stopped working. Now that I've taken a look at it the flash light does not work either. If you call someone, 4 times out of 5 the screen goes blank and you cannot end the call. Sometimes this happens when receiving calls as well.
I was using CM7 before and no additional apps were installed. Tried with or without SD card, rebooting, resetting to factory defaults, putting another ROM, restoring to factory ROM.
The symptoms:
- any camera app starts with a black screen and later throws wait/close dialog
- flashlight apps seem to work but no light is coming out
- headphones do not get recognized, tried 4 brands, compressed air, pushing, pulling, pressing. Not a lint issue.
- immediately after pressing a call I get a black screen which I can come out of by pressing a random combination of keys
I tried moving the camera and LED modules with my finger but nothing happened.
Everything else works: calls, trackball with led, bluetooth, wifi.
I had a similar problem with the flash and camera and it was fixed when I swapped out the main board which also has all the ports your having problems with

That sounds unfortunate because the original seller has now closed the shop: site is offline, amazon and ebay products are delisted, does not respond to email.
Even worse, I'm located in Germany and bought the phone here, but I don't really speak the language well enough to contact consumer protection authority and even the HTC support site is all in German. Original box and warranty are in my home country. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
I've written a mail to HTC support since GooglePhone has closed shop as well.
Since I'm still on a rant, touchscreen has been acting up since day one, upon heating it registers wrong touches, but this is already a known issue.
It was a nice phone while it lasted, but in hindsight I wouldn't recommend it to anyone anymore. It still looks like new fwiw.

Its hardware issue caused mayb y dropping the N1
so try to replacing ur main board or mayb u can get it repaired if u have a good engineer around u
Thank If my reply helps u ..
Just as an update, the issue with all these phones is the ribbon cable connecting headphone jack, camera, proximity sensor and perhaps [front] speaker. It's probably an easy replacement and the part cost is around 25-40$. The cellphone repair guy said that he has done it a lot of times for this phone type, so it's probably a production/engineering issue.
Hey,
My headphone jack has stopped detecting whether headphones are plugged in or not, stopped a few days ago, my phone is just about 5 weeks old and fully stock.
The jack it self is working, by using the app soundabout I'm able to "force" the sound to the headphones, but only manually. The Z3 never detects that headphones are connected.
There are a few threads on sonys forum but other than recommending testing the soundabout-app which really is more of a poor workaround than a solution there doesn't seem to any working tips to solve it. I my self havn't tried factory reset yet, but others say they have without solving the problem.
Some one with advice on how to solve this (if it's not a HW-problem)?
Unfortunately I am seeing the same problem. I got this on private sale, but I have the receipt so hopefully it can be repaired if it isn't a software issue.
It works with Soundabout, and I've tried clearing that Smart Connect to no avail. Haven't tried factory reset though.
Had the same. Then the sound cut totally. Went back to sony.

Just spoke to Sony support and they said to run the Software Repair, I will try this out. If that doesn't work then it'll need to go for repair.
At least the phone is still under warranty, but it's pretty bad this issue is common. Definitely disappointed, I thought I'd just give Sony a try.
Have you tried the "Smart Key" app by Sony? It's actually just an add-on for Smart Connect (when you click on headset device you can see "Call key settings; Download and install", clicking that takes you to Play store to download "Smart Key").
When I installed it, my phone detected headset. The problem with app is that it's not working right. When I click the headphones button once - nothing happens, when I click it twice, then the action configured for 1 click starts. Strange.
Yeah I did try that as well, and it also does not detect.
This is one of the strangest issues I've seen.
Just tried factory reset, still does not work.
Currently downloading the update on the PC Companion, will see if this helps, honestly I doubt it.
Got an RMA to send for repair now, hopefully it won't be that long.
Yep, I too called Sony yesterday and they told me to just send it in, about 5-10 working days normal time for repair according to support (in Sweden). Pretty disappointed with this after less than a mount of use (and seemingly more or less common error). My store has pretty good return policy's normally, but wont accept an exchange, just repair on this ;(.
Thanks for all replies!
Just got my replacement Z3 compact, seems to be fine now, they replaced it altogether instead of fixing, I guess this was a serious issue.
I had the exact same problem. However, it's strange-- when I changed to a different pair of headphones, it works. The connection is not great, however. By pressing on either direction of the jack plug audio playback will stop sometimes and the headphones won't be detected. Because I bought mine from Clove UK and live in Thailand, there's no way I can get them repaired. I'm pretty disappointed with the build quality. My Z1C was a rock, and an all-around better phone to be honest. I miss it (drowed due to faulty water proofing, couldn't be repaired).

I have problem using apple earpods on this phone. In settings>sounds>audio settings>headphones change it to different ones (for ex i chose STH-30) unplugged my earphones and plugged it back.. might take 2 or 3 tries but hopefully it helps
I got a simmilar problem, if I move my phone, the sound begins to crack and wierd stuff.
Tomorrow I will send it back and will see if they repair or change the phone
I just picked one of these up, also private sale, and am having the same issue.. The headset is working fine then randomly stops being detected. I have to disconnect and reseat and twist the connection to get it to recognize it again.
Googling it finds a plethora of people complaining of the same problem.
I'm going to go direct to Sony and see whats up re:repairs.
I am having the same problem. Music is playing fine for a moment until he doesn't recognise him suddenly. is this a warranty problem?
I'm now on my fifth Xperia Z3 Compact, and still Sony fail to acknowledge a problem with the handset. It's disgusting.
Out of interest, what charger lead/headphones do you use? They're trying to blame it on my headphones/charger/apps when it's blatantly not the case.
toothpick solved my problem:good:
i found a big lump of cotton in it, i didnt have a problem like that before. And i didnt expect such a big thing will become in 2 months.
I think I have the solution
I had the same problem with my apple earbuds and Beats Solo's. I tried it with my sony earbuds that came with the phone, which were never used, and those worked. I tried it with my other beats cable which is hardly ever used, and it worked too. I think that maybe the 3.5mm connector on your headphones/earbuds may be dirty or old. try leaning the connector or try with brand new headphones/earbuds. Good luck!
SoundAbout works
the music app won't detect headphones, other 3rd party apps work fine. being a sony user and a walkman user all my childhood, this is just sad. tried clearing data too!
So, fist time post.
Anyway, a friend of mine gave me his Flex the other day. He was upset because he couldn't get the sound/audio to work and no one could hear him on his end, showing his mic wasn't working (first time this has happened). After tinkering around for a bit (cleaning over and over), trying everything I could, even downgrading it from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 to see if it was a software problem. Still nothing. Yet, when a headset or just normal headphones are plugged in everything works fine.
So, after all of that we took it in and they said it wasn't a hardware problem, but they couldn't find a solution and they couldn't replace the handset with his warranty already expired. So, I was hoping there was someone here who could help me. I was thinking maybe if there was a software problem I didn't catch if installing a custom rom on it would help. I was hoping to hopefully get some insight before going to that.
Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section, still new here.
There are no "custom" per say ROMs besides the cm11 one Playfulgod and I have posted in the dev section. If you're on 4.2.2 download Playfulgod's cm11. But it doesn't stay booted and there is no data. Download mine ,which is only Playfulgod's cm that I've modified to boot with 4.4, and the is no sound but it has data and stable boot. I don't suggest either one as your fix though. If you flash the stock 4.2.2 or the stock 4.4.2 software to it and there still is no sound except through the headphone jack then I can't imagine it not being a hardware issue. I mean it pretty much has to be a hardware issue.
And besides the kats at these stores selling you the phones or answering your questions, stereotypically no smarter about the devices than any other 20 year old that has googled and memorized the specs of the phones. They know specs and sales pitches. Other wise they have to revert to the computer and go through a series of elimination questions to diagnose your issue. Ive even had to show one rep how to use lg PC suite to flash his g2 back to stock. And that's the standard issue software that we all have.
My best guess on your issue is the device could have been dropped or damaged in some way that has loosened or broken a connection or part inside rendering the speaker useless. But that's my opinion.
Well I don't think it's been dropped. At least he said he didn't drop it. After pulling it apart I made sure everything was in the right place and nothing was shorted out or disconnected. So I'll probably send it into a repair shop to see if they can do anything with it. Though a headset would probably just be the better way to go, it's just an inconvenience.

Absolutely. I would hate to have to through in my ear buds every time I had to answer a call
Well after installing Master Volume Control, I have been able to test that the speaker does in fact work. But no sounds of any kind aside from voice call, work, the normal beep you get when using the volume rockers. This is starting to drive me crazy.
might have solution
Just received my refurbished flex phone, realized no sound from speaker. Popped the back off a couple times, suddenly I hear sound! The cable over the battery when lifted and remove the crease caused by shape of battery removed, speaker now works! I hope this helps you. Best of luck.
