Ok so this is a topic that has been bothering me the mms compression issue upon sending to other devices . Previously the images sent had a size at about 30kb compressed by either sprint and or the mms apk . Several devs took notice and did what they could to allow larger maximum size from 2mb to 5mb therefor making larger image files to be sent .
That was part of the issue and I'm sure there is more than what I found well I saw it in another thread of the HTC EVO LTE had this issue . So the fix is to change the jpeg image to a png to my understanding png is a more compression safe container for images .
Now this remaining issue is that its still somewhat bad quality but it sends the image as png with much much less compression taking effect . Also the image file at times to large for other devices to receive the image ill guess and say anything over 2mb will have an issue being sent to other devices.
Edit so testing this with my DNA is odd to say the least I can't pinpoint what size it allows to sent or not at times it will accept 2mb or above others it won't I don't get it lol the accepting phone is the droid DNA no root no Rom . But to my rooted phone accepted them all okay .
Can someone please help me figure this out I know devs here like to stay hush hush but I got my family member the s3 she is not able to get around to the pc and does not have email so direct mms is best .
Thanks guys
Thanks rydah for the mms edits as well
Edit phones I sent to are the sprint gs3 the I9300 on ATT and the HTC DNA on Verizon .

This has been posted a few times. Its a Sprint compression thing. It been fixed in one rom that I know of. The current max file size for photos in MMS is 2mb I believe. The rom fix bumps it up to 5mb.
is there a fix for non rooted?
That's my point as of now there is none other than to share the pics for people who root are gonna be fine but until they come up with a fix to ota or something most users will have to work around the issue those on Xda can root its really so easy on the one ..

No because the Mms.apk has to be modified

They're not gonna "fix" it because there is no problem to begin with. This is done on all phones so that the data transmitted is kept to a minimum and reduces load on the network, as opposed to sending uncompressed MMS

So everyone must live with the face mms will look horrid sending it to any phone with sprint ?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
This is also my biggest issue with sprint. I understand the need to compress the image, however, sprint compresses the image much more than the other networks. It's such a waste to have a great camera only to have the image look like crap when you want to share it.
There's no excuse for sprint, especially now that their new network is taking shape, not to reduce the amount of compression in mms.
In the meantime, I'm hoping Google's chat app Bable will allow for uncompressed mms.
I think the compression on the photo is done on the phone not at the network level. I understand needing to keep it to a minimum for network but like shrinking a picture down to 19k is just stupid. I would be fine with 200-300K with a decent resolution. I was gonna look for an app to see if there was something where you could set automatic picture compression for mms messages. I want something I can adjust, that does it automatically when sending an mms and of course does not override the original file. It would be nice if it even made a temp directory so your not getting duplicate low quality photos in your album. Sending full uncompressed mms although can be nice a lot of times is not necessary. If anyone knows of such an app please post it, free or paid I would be more than happy to buy it. The default compression levels are awful.

Yes, but at the request of the network. I just did a test in which I took a picture and Dropbox'd it to my girlfriend who's on Verizon and asked her to mms it back to me. I then looked at the size of the mms file and it was 57k and looked great. Meanwhile, I mms'd that same picture to her and it was compressed to 22k! That made a huge difference! Hers was sharp and filled my entire screen, mine was blurry and shrunk in size. We need to start a petition asking Sprint to ease up on compression.
I did the same test with all my devices I tried forwarding everything I could to test if it's just the phone mms apk or the network so I drop box dl it to my s3 on sprint it was fine than sent to the one fine looked great sent from one back to s3 horrible I've contacted sprint and HTC on this issue .

I think they did this specifically with the one more so than ever or they didn't compensate on the fact the one uses much higher resolution

MMS compression is NOT new to Sprint nor HTC devices. It's coded into their mms application and stock ROMs. Yes it can be changed, both compression and overall filesize (I've been doing it for years now on my ROMs, including the HTC ONE). No, I will not be telling you how to do it.

This. As said above, its coded into the Mms.apk, the network only transmits the MMS. If it were at the network level, any sort of uncompressed MMS mod (which we have for several devices) would not exist

Yes I understand this so what's the overall fix for users not here on xda I'm just wondering because I think it's crazy how this could be this bad . Understanding that they both use compression but it did not degrade images this bad I've used HTC devices since the og evo had the evo lte and have the DNA in no way do any send pics this bad . Is it the ultra pixels that play a part in this ? Both of you who answered we all know what they do but why is it worse in thus device ?

I dont know. It MAY have to do with the ultrapixels thing, but dont quote me. It might just be that HTC decided to have the Mms.apk app compress more than usual because maybe taking shots with ultrapixels yields bigger file sizes on average? I cant say for certain.
And yes, i agree that its worse, even on my shift i can still send pretty good quality photos

Yeah no problem, but dont worry even if they dont tone it down a bit. You can fix it with root, there are plenty of guides out there on how to enable uncompressed MMS by modding the Mms.apk

Yea so basically HTC bends over for sprint for some reason Idk but it's bothering me I will try to modify it and or wait for a fix in here I'm just trying to get sprints attention on this because already while on the phone the sprint rep said she won't get the one now because this issue . Why I bring that up is I find it not fair because sprints request hurts HTC if it gets to everyone that this is an issue . Maybe I'm wrong who knows but it's a pain in the ass to always have to drop box send to people instead mms ..:banghead:

Its not a sprint thing, its the stock messaging app. Just send photos using a third part sms app. I use Chompsms and send photos through mms at 1.3 mbs.
The stock mms app thinks everything is a slideshow so it will buck down the picture to 32kb or less. Use chomp trust me. Look at this mms I sent through chomp. went out at 1.02 mb.

Ok i am being throttled at 5-7 kbs which sux!! So ive been google hunting and have found very little on beating throttle "all i wouldnt trust." So i started digging into system files. I found a file named cci_ro.prop in data/flex which when opened as text has alot of options to edit over ip/network. I understand some but not all of options unfortunatly. I will toy around with it very softly see what i come up with and maybe beat cricket throttling for good and without having to flash unknown to zio.

I found this very interesting thread called 'Data Service Governor Killer.'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10100043&postcount=1
The author of the thread mentioned that the data governor killer is compatible with many other roms. From reading the thread, I think that I understood that the governor killer modifies a file in the Android system directory named services.jar
These are the throttled files that can be found in the classes.dex inside the services.jar file directory (examples from a moto droid) and the governor killer removes them,
ThrottleService$1.smali
ThrottleService$2.smali
ThrottleService$DataRecorder.smali
ThrottleService$InterfaceObserver.smali
ThrottleService$MyHandler.smali
ThrottleService$SettingsObserver.smali
ThrottleService.smali
The data governor killer is flashed under recovery mode by using rom manager or something of the sort. I do think that this may be possible for us to do in CWM or to integrate this with openZio.
It would be awesome to have the data service governor killer along with Juwe11's ram script modification added to a future build of openZio.
EDIT:
I found this tutorial http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/105807-guide-how-stop-data-throttling.html which doesn't require flashing I think.
Nice, now let's see how long it takes them to catch on and terminate your service.

That's the pot calling the kettle black if I ever heard it. I didn't see Mattix's post as rude. Edit: did you reboot after changing to true pomer? Also i just want to say that i was 100% throttled i called cricket cs and they verified that i had gone over my 1 gig mark.
The only thing that i can think of me changing was a day prier i deleted the folder throttle and cleared out the folder usagestats "then rebooted". Both folders are found in data/system. On reboot system made another throttle folder and had replaced the 2 files in the usagestats system reseting both files with all 0's in the files. No speed increase i was still hitting 5-7kbs everywere i did the speed test. Tested outside, inside, in car all still the same. I am still getting 150 and above right now. Weird ill let ya no if anything changes.

@bryanskinner, I am new to the droid world. Just recent got a job to afford a cricket phone! I've have discovered the beauty of rooting a phone with my ascend.
I just got the ascend2, and there is little to none support for it right now. I have the phone rooted and do not have clockwork recovery on the phone. Is this a must have? b/c i dont want to rush things for the mod b/c a2 not supported just yet but of course there is a way to mock clockwork mod.
As for fastdormance=true i have no idea how you would get to that system file and i have no idea if i need a custom rom on my phone or can i just use my stock os? Im asuming i need to get a program for my computer to access system files? or is it simply an app?
Please help. I WANT MY NETFLIX BACK. it took no time at all for the startling truth of cricket's throttling to arise and great me with retarded slow speeds.
FYI @mattix, you might like to know this..... I work for verizon as a tech support agent and no, cell phone companies will not cancel your service if you bypass your phone throttling even if we see it in our systems. in fact it is highly the opposite. you can do anything to your phone from rooting to whatever. just trust me.

Here is an idea: don't come into our forum and berate us over OUR product-choices. FYI, we piggyback on Verizon's data network, and much of the time, we're just as fast.
Anyway, here are some abridged posts from pyrixiate from the OpenZIO development thread that solve the throttling problem.
pyraxiate said:
IT WORKS! One drawback... you cant access settings/mobile networks. Not sure why but others report the same on other devices. Ill look into it and try adding one throttling service back at a time and hopefully it will resolve the issue.
All i did was decompile [services.jar] , wipe ALL of the throttling services, and recompile.

Credit goes to Sino8r here :

PS
It definitely helped my bandwidth issues. I know im well over 5gb this month and i noticed a heavy reduction in speed. Using this id say it want back to around 50-60% what it originally was.
Please note, I have NOT had the time to determine which specific throttling services specifically have an impact, so for now you WILL not be able to use settings/ mobile networks ( this is also repeated several times in other threads using the same method ). One of those throttling files if removes causes FC's.

Once again, this particular services.jar was decompiled, stripped of it's throttling services, and recompiled by pyraxiate, and this link is to his dropbox that he posted in the OpenZIO development thread.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37729675/services.jar
A few more things to keep in mind; you HAVE to adb push this (to /system/framework/) or you'll end up bootlooping your phone, before you adb push it make sure you have data and data roaming enabled in settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks (because you won't be able to access this after you push the new services.jar), this is ONLY good for the current OpenZIO ROM, and BACK UP YOUR SERVICES.JAR FILE IN CASE YOU F**K IT UP.

There are a few thing though u should look before getting this device if u get a used one from the market
1- Put on a black wallpaper or image and see the corners for lcd bleeding
2- Load couple of system apps like camera and stuff see if it looses responsiveness or restarts, finally look closely at lcd if there are dead pixels if it passes those test ill buy the g2x no doubt about it

Just have to say... If you didn't get it, I bet you wish you did Nexus S is first phone after gn to get ics! This phone is the ISH! It is now clear why google chose this phone over the g2- the gpu still beast enough to handle ICS, while none of the other phones (except gs) of the time(not event g2) can compete. I will never buy anything but Nexus.
Nexus FTW!
Now that I have perm root, I wanted to do 2 things.
1. Setcpu to a lower speed to extend battery... I found setting it to 800 has no noticable effect on speed... GREAT!
2. I also wanted to change the LCD density to take advantage or this large screen... From 240 down to about 200... This works as well, with the exception that dialer looks a little funky...
HOWEVER when both these mods are made at the same time.... I lose all networks.... No phone or data connection at all...
Massive bummer.... Hoping someone cooking a Rom addresses this.... Otherwise I may be forced to figure out how to do it
Note: you CAN run at a modified CPU speed and an LCD density of 220... It takes a couple minutes to establish a network signal, but it works

If anything, I would love to have 480x800 on the vivid. It would be perfect for me. My old eyes can't see all these small fonts.

see my reply to your thread....
changing your LCD Density may offer some help.
Please forgive me..this is my first smart phone. How do you change the LDC upward so my old tired eyes can see the emails (which the font is pretty small)? Also, would this be the same function to see the total message in my calendar entries. It makes it hard to see even a weekly view if I have to click on every entry to see what it says.
Thanks for your help.

I first noticed it when a buddy sent me a picture from his HTC one . It was very small and not very detailed. I picked mine up on Friday and noticed when I sent a picture to my friends through mms that it was only sending 32 kb size pictures. The actual photos are .91 mb's. My question is short of emailing the picture is there anyway to send the photo in full resolution over mms?
Only way to my knowledge is to dev unlock your phone and install a custom ROM with that limitation altered to allow larger picture sizes to be sent.

In the OG Evo forums and in the 3d forums there was a mms hack that would allow for the user to increase maximum mms size from 2mb to 5mb. Hoping to see this here too. : fingers crossed:

Ok thank you guys. Yeah hopefully someone figures it out. I mean I would even be happy if it was sending them at 1mb. Kinda strange.
At this point all I really care about is something that will keep my data connection from frequent and random drops. If not it's time to look at other options.

NEVER happens to me so I doubt 4.2.2 will remedy for ya. Maybe look into other avenues to resolve this issue
I don't know what else it could be. Others with different devices hold their connection from the same location while mine drops. Whatever the case, it's getting old. I'm done talking to Sprint about it as the answer of "we are working on the towers right now“ doesn't work for me. If they were truly working on them the guys I work with would have the same problem.

The main reason I want 4.2 is so I can play with non-daily driver ROMs without dealing with the SD card when I go back. Anyone else?

That's probably the only practical reason.
tommason1968,
I know exactly what you are talking about! I had a thread complaining about the same thing. Took my phone into the Sprint store and it failed "once" a test and they gave me a new phone and the exact same thing happens to my current phone. Can't go down the street (or even sometimes sitting still) and I lose data connection. Listen to streaming radio on Tune-In and it cuts out constantly. Used the Scout (Telenav) GPS and always got "There is no cell phone coverage / Now there is cell phone coverage" during a trip to Wisconsin and Mississippi this month.
Heard the excuse that the towers are being upgraded and that is the reason service is so poor. Almost tempted to say well put that in writing so that I can go to another wireless company without an ETF.
Came from the HTC LTE and never had so many drop outs. Yes, there were marginal spots that I would lose service, but in the past I have made it to Wisconsin and back without dropping service once not to mention 50 - 100 times, so like you think it is directly related to the phone. When you take the phone into the Sprint store, they are like well nothing what we can do, or well that is a lot of work and doubt we will find something. It is tempted to reactive my old HTC LTE and see how it does because I know where the marginal areas are at and the areas that are not marginal that I still lose connectivity on a constant basis with my HTC One.
Just wonder if like the first I-phone made of solid shell, that the metal casing isn't affecting how well the phone does in the terms of the ability to connect and stay connected to the cell towers.
For me, it's gotta be the way ZOE clips will be captured as a single video file instead of 20+ images. Each time I take a ZOE clip all those 20 pics get backed up on my G+ cloud.

And the charging speed. And the quick toggles. And hopefully the focus on the camera. And the OS efficiency.
I've managed to get rid of all the lag by turning off all animations. I just need better battery life. Everything else has been promised.
I just want the added features of 4.2.2. I want quick toggles, lock screen widgets, etc. And the added battery percentage and what not.

What if I told you...
EQS and percentage are already available on Viper and HTC will not incorporate lock screen widgets.
4.3
Who cares about 4.2? 4.3 began rolling out to the Google Experience/Play HTC Ones a few days back which has a functional IR blaster! That, with CM's new camera and this phone is going to be pretty awesome, pretty quickly.

I'm with explicit. I like the aosp toggles much much more along with HTC's version of the battery percent. Also, the update will come with lockscreen widgets. They already have the implemented in the Intl version.
I for one am pretty stoked about this update. It will include everything that I like in aosp plus it will have IR.

That the EQS included with Viper looks hideous to some of us?
Just ribbing you, but seriously-- I cannot stand how it looks in the slightest. Native quick toggles are also one less app needed to replicate functionality, which is nice if you're trying to keep things slim.

Yeah. I think that the EQS are stupid looking too. Just wanted to make sure it was known that most of these features already exist in some form. I love the Holo style EQS, though. In the meantime, I'm using Floating toucher. Its pretty cool.
I'm more excited about the camera improvements. The number of pictures out of focus is too damn high!
I expect that it will be the only update released for this phone.

No way. This is a flagship device that's barely 4 months old. Support has to be for at least a year.

Good one
I'd be willing to guess the 4.2.2 delay is a Sprint issue more than an HTC one.
I personally am not even excited about the 4.2.2 update anymore, due to how long it's taken and now that 4.3 is out.

I'm not excited about either one. I have a Nexus 7 with 4.3 on it and it doesn't look/feel much different from when I used CM on my LTE. There just isn't anything to really worry about other than the kernel.
