Isn't this phone supposed to come with to two gb ram?
How come it says 1.5gb

Weird. It shows 2gb in about>hardware but in apps it shows 1.5. Rom toolbox also shows 1.5.

Perhaps 512MB dedicated to system RAM only
500 MB is probably being used by the GPU
1.5GB of RAM is available to these running applications. If you navigate to Settings > About> Hardware Information the 2GB value will be seen. 0.5 GB is dedicated to ensure the device software runs smoothly.

All thats says is that its "used by something else". The question is what.
And judging from how its worded it seems like its referring to the 0.5 GB going to the GPU.
It actually says its used to make things run smoother. I don't know how much you know about hardware, but GPUs have their own ram. A phone GPU wouldn't share system ram. Ram is used to hold temporary files such as an open app. As soon as that app is force closed/force stopped then that information is flushed from ram. Think of it like having a dual core processor. One core of ram keeps the currently running app or apps in its memory. Meanwhile, the other 512 mb core holds just system software. That way your apps are never making your Sense/ROM/etc slow. Its pretty smart.
Sent from my HTCONE using xda app-developers app
Most devices do this. The reserved RAM is to store critical processes like the dialer, base Android process, and other related things.
The operating system requires ram to actually run, its no different than a pc, total ram is not the same as available ram.
I'm 99.999% sure that the ram you are not seeing is system/hardware reserved memory that would not report as available memory.

Most phone GPU's dont have dedicated memory and would in fact share system memory much like most laptops graphics cards.
Pretty sure if you cat /proc/iomem you'll see the addresses of the ram that has been reserved by the system.

I echo this. Basically it is just all a matter of how the system is reporting the memory. On my Note II, it shows almost all of the 2GB, on my HTC One, it excludes the system reserved memory.

Such a cool Phone but why has it only 512 RAM? My next phone schould last for ~3 years and i doubt that 512MB ram will be enough
What are your opinions on this? Are 512MB enough today or should i look after another Phone with 1GB RAM??
On which Apps could 512 MB RAM have a negatively impact?
Greetz und Thanks
My Question about the RAM Issue:
- Can Swapper2 be used ?
- Can u use Swapper2 on many Applications (does it make sense)?
Thanks for your help!
512MB is enough..
Yeah i think it too, that first it will be enough.
But i'm not buying a new Mobile Phone every year. And i don't believe if it it's enough in 1 or 2 years. So it would be great it swapper works or sth like this.
Nxt Question:
How much RAM do i effectively got. Cause i read that u have 512 MB minus 128 MB for the GPU minus 200 for the OS.
So there is perhaps 200 free for the apps?
Is this right ?

Root it, remove a few of the preinstalled apps or exchange them against some with lower memory usage or use a custom rom and you will even have more ram available. I think 512 MB will be enough...
You should also be able to lower the ram reserved for the gpu. It should be possible to free up to 100mb if you dont play many games otherwise up to 64mb.
According to some reviews it seems that the Optimus 2X reserves 128MB for the GPU. This would mean you only get a total of 512 - 128 = 384MB of RAM for Program Memory.
That's at least one thing HTC did well on their latest devices. Devices like the Incredible S and the Desire S ship with 768MB of RAM.
I think the RAM in the 2X is enough to work with the device but it sure ain't a lot.
Bill Gaits Believed that 640K RAM will be enough few years ago
But Yes so far (i am using android for 2 years now) it proved - 512MB are enough!
And if there only 2-3 devices with bigger RAM - so developers will stick with 512 for a while.
my opinion is that 512 mb is good for this time. i have a galaxy s with a custom Rom and i have 339 mb of ram and the device.work fine.
i see that i will use approx 20 mb of extra ram and(galaxy vs LG) and also you have a dual core.processor that optimize some operation.
well... i think that for this moment and for approx 1 year 512mb of ram will be a good choose!

That's not a question...
Got a o2x and can confirm you got 381mb of free ram for apps... that makes 128mb dedicated for gpu. Got around 110 mb free at the moment, and I have a lot of Apps running. When I get custom rom, some of the ram will be cleared, when removing unnecessary apps. I got adw launcher running on top of stock ui

First, I won't buy it soon. Just looking for one to have ideia about what notebook to choose. So, being launched until end of 2013 isn't problem for me.
So, I want:
-Processor: Intel Core i5 or i7 (Ivy Bridge, if possible).
RAM: 6 to 8 Gb
HD: + or - 500 Gb, or a SSD with a big capacity.
Screen: 14 to 16 inches, maybe FullHD.
Keyboard: Not needed, but numeric keyboard is a good. A must is retro-iluminated keyboard. Maybe controls for music (Play/Pause, Backward (forgot the word!!!), Next and volume control.
Graphics Card: No need for the best, only something that can play games quite nice, as playing won't be the main use.
Weight: The less, the better.
Size: The thinest as possible.
Connectivity: 1 HDMI, 1 VGA, 3 or 4 USBs (preference for 3.0, at least 2.0), CD/DVD Reader/Recorder. Blu-Ray not needed, but optional. 1 SD/MicroSD (there is a notebook that hava Micro SD?). Don't use many others. Bluetooth not needed, but if possible, I want.
Color/Finish: Piano Black or something Grey. Suggestions accepted.
Another things I may have forgotten, please ask.
Use will be browsing, wathing movies/series, light to medium editior programs usage, gaming, songs (a lot) and, of course, Android user things.
Thanks for the help.
It will serve you well.

Yes I know, got one myself. Asus K53SV-SX838V. It got an I7 2670QM 2.2Ghz, 8GB Ram, Nvidia GT 540M 1GB, 640GB HDD.
But well you got look for yourself, Asus K53 is the serie I have, they have them in several options, I got the better option. This one should fill your needs for sure.

I've always been partial to Toshiba. Never had any hardware related problems with them.

I have an HP, and although they aren't that reliable, their performance is outstanding, especially the dv7 series. Go for one of these, Toshibas are also extremely durable and reliable.

Thats normal i think..since the RAM is reserved for the system app and OS..don't worry mate the devices will working by it self ..
1. Use Android Assistant. Put a widget on homescreen and keep pressing that tiny thing to clear memory.
2. Use Link2SD if you are appholic.
3. Try moving apps to SD Card/
4. Keep rebooting once in a while.
5. Wipe Cache if possible and try to see if any effect arises.
6. Use Antivirus for a while. See if some 'T Virus' has infected
7. Share your experience with others so that others learn.
Hi all, I just bought a Note and I to am getting low memory.
I was shocked to see 500meg used on boot! Is this normal for the note? Im worried that once I start loading all my applications I will run out of RAM

Use Autokiller Memory Booster. Problem solved. 500 is normal, this is Android system, cannot use the Windows mindset
This is android mechanism, watever you use to kill memory it will be just Placebo.
Android have LMK(Low memory killing) function inbuilt, when ever system need more RAM, it will kill least used application.
And when there is free RAM, your last used application will remain in memory till android system sense it is full.
So what you are having is normal.

Anyone else notice that right out of the box you only have 23GB of usable storage on the 32GB variant?
I know that you'll never get the full storage amount due to the ROM taking up space. However, on both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, with 16GB total space, I had at least 12GB available right out of the box. So I'm used to having ~4GB of unusable space. But 9GB of space taken right off the bat for a pure Android device with no bloatware does not seem right to me.
Anyone know why this might be?

Starting from lollipop, the phone uses art run time. Art takes up more space in the internal storage, it's one of the tradeoffs when compared to dalvik.
And no you can't change back to dalvik on lollipop.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Good to know. Thanks!
I guess this is just one more reason many should opt for the 64GB.
Now that I'm on a computer, I can elaborate my point in more detail,
Android 4.4 KitKat, at least on the Nexus 5, includes a new runtime call “Android runtime”, ART. Though it’s not a very creative name, it is pretty creative in what it does. Unlike JIT, which must compile every app whenever it’s loaded, ART works on a concept called ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation. With ART, when you download and install an app it automatically pre-compiles. This takes up more space on your device and takes longer to initially install when compared to Dalvik. However, apps launch quicker and are arguably faster when run using ART rather than Dalvik. What’s more, since less time is required to run apps, your processor doesn’t get worked as hard and your battery life may benefit as a result.

http://pocketnow.com/2013/11/13/dalvik-vs-art
Do note that the above is from Kit Kat's ART which can be different from Lollipop's ART (improved and more finalized)
This isn't much difference to the 32gb Nexus 5 which has 26gb.
That's weird -did you get a carrier model vs an unlocked one from the playstore?

OP, were any carrier apps loaded on during setup? If so, remove and get that space back.

For this phone, only AT&T gets carrier apps pre-loaded. To be honest, a lot of the Google Applications are bloatware.
Bloatware examples are: Fit, Earth, Books, Movies, Google+, etc.

I agree with you, but to the OP's issue, he may regain some of his space by removing them, it's been said that you can remove those said carrier apps. As to the others, they may be removable, or one may need root if they are loaded just in /system. Thing is the OP hasn't stated if he got a GP or moto phone, or one from a carrier to begin with.
Initially I was disappointed with the seemingly low space, but you have to keep in mind that a good chunk of that 32GB is lost to formatting (I'd estimate around 10%-15%). The rest is used by the operating system. So 24GB of free space is very plausible on a 32GB device.

Correct I was posting that as a comparison seeing that mine has about the same amount of space taken up.

That's because all the running and cached apps take up an enormous chunk of the ram, I have the 6gb version and barely have 2gb available ram, shocking really, I am pretty disappointed, you should be even more so haha.
I even have over 100 apps disabled which did free up a bit, but not much.
I have a le eco le max 2 with 6gb ram with a custom pie rom on it, with almost 5gb free at all times.
I see no performance issues on the note 9 but it seems daft to advertise a phone with 6 gb of ram where barely 2 is ever available. Obviously any operating system and running/cached apps are going to take up some of that ram...but really over %60?

Same here, but, I'm glad I opted for the 8/512 version.
After experiencing 8G RAM on a few phones (BlackShark/OnePlus 5T/RazerPhone), I wasn't about to pass up the option, especially on a Samsung device, running a much heavier skin than vs the abovementioned. Out of all of those (Note9 included), I'd have to say the RazerPhone seemed smoother/faster, but not by very much.

remember the Android Mantra; "unused ram is wasted ram"..
forget about how much free ram is "available"; it means absolutely nothing on a modern Android Phone..

The RAM usage is different. Android works accordingly to what is available.
4GB, 6GB, 8GB.
It actually utilizes what is available. The more RAM you have the more it will use
Well... Running Bitdefender in the background and my phone is not even reaching 4GB.
Anyway more is better than less, I'm sure some future version of Android will take full advantage of that RAM
