So I'm wondering, if I go ahead and dev unlock and root then I'm going to loose some apps and loose the ability to take an ota, correct? I know that your pretty much doing that anyways to run custom roms but is there a way to add the apps back on so you could take ota?

If you ever felt the need, you could flash an RUU and then take the OTA.

yes and no.
really you could relock the bootloader at anytime and run the stock ruu and take ota's. the only difference is the bootloader will say relocked and tampered. which would really only make it hard for htc to warranty anything
Ok. I've done this a dozen times but this had me thrown for a loop. I'm just wondering if I should wait on doing this or not since I'm expecting a ota to fix some of the problems soon, especially with the home and back button.

I'm sure OMJ and Viper will both incorporate the OTA soon after it's release.

If I've got this right, if I unlock the HTC One through the HTCdev site, I will not be able to get OTA updates and that with S-on we can't flash radios.
Does this mean that unlocked devices are stuck for now on version 1 of the radio software? I ask this because other handsets have benefitted from radio updates. Or can a radio update be applied using a RUU?
Thanks in advance.

If your using a custom Rom, you can wait for the developer to update the rom. Or you can restore your phone back to stock with bootloader relocked and do a OTA update.

I can't remember what HTC Dev site says about updates after being unlocked, but if you're unlocked you're probably going for root, S-OFF and want to use a custom ROM, and rooted custom ROMs shouldn't be upgraded OTA or by official updates.
Yes, you need to be S-OFF to flash radios.
However, you will always be able to get the updates on XDA, so don't worry about missing out on anything!

The OP has a point. Right now there's no way you can get S-OFF so you can't unofficially flash radios. And you can't update also while unlocked so you can't flash radios officially. Anybody here with experience with the One series could enlighten us here how they deal with this? I'm not sure yet with the relocking of the bootloader as I came from a Sony device and as far as I know relocking bootloader & flashing OTA = Permanent Brick.
Plus the other problem is that on the One X, if you were fully updated, they patched the only method of getting S-off. So it was a choice, don't accept any update while still S-on or remain on current official software and possibly risk loosing the chance to S-off later.

I'm pretty sure you have got it figured out. If you are unlocked, you cannot take any OTAs that contain the software updates along with firmware updates (radio etc). You will have to RUU back to stock and then take the OTA.
I don't think it would be wise to relock with a custom ROM and take the OTA, that might mess a lot of things up.
Yeah, I've got the problem figured out unlock=no radio updates.
It's the solution I was looking for...

Hi guys just wondering, i have the sudden want to S-OFF my phone but i want to check if my H-Boot version is compaible with the S-OFF method.
If you have updated to ICS from the manufacturer you should be good to go. Even if you are still on GB there is an s-off kit for either version of android

The dev of the s-off process recommends it and will not help troubleshoot without it ..
But..
Homeslice managed to s-off without going back to stock...
FYI: I know he did so pre-CM10 so maybe a sense ROM?

There is only the one proven method that I know of for this phone...
Do not be intimidated...
All the wire trick is... is finding a ground that causes a reboot in a different manner... and allows the exploit to run...
Be not afraid

I'm going to give some vague instructions that worked for me.
1) s-off your boot loader (revone)
2) run the exe ruu 1.29.
3) once you're back on stock follow the revone instructions to s-on.
Sorry for not providing more information. Good luck

I'm already s off. If I run the ruu I will then be stock s off and can receive the ota updates?
Sent from my HTCONE using XDA Premium App
Yes. I'd leave it s-off. It won't hurt anything. Make sure the stock recovery is back after you run the ruu.

Hey all,
I want to return to stock ROM (work purposes). It was a PIA to get the phone to S-off and I want to leave it off in case I want to flash roms in the future.
Will this affect my OTAs? (downloading/installation)
S off won't affect otas. As long as you have a stock recovery you can use otas

Hi all. I have it on pretty good authority that we'll be seeing a 4.4.4 update soon.
I'm currently stock rooted, s-off and unlocked but have twrp as my recovery. I'm curious how I can go back to stock recovery top new ready to accept the upcoming ota.
Thanks in advance.

Quick search for "Return to Stock" took me here: Stock Backups + OTA's
It will literally probably be only hours after release that you will be able to download the update here on the forums. No stock recovery required. Can't wait that long?

What you need is to flash a rom as close to stock as possible (you can find stock backups here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736048 ) and then flash a stock recovery (theres one on here somewhere, if you cant find it ill post one ). Once the OTA comes itll notify you and you can take the update. As long as you're s-off you can then install your custom recovery again and you're good to go.
Im like you i guess, i like to keep an factory OTA on hand myself. Hope this helps.
