Two Questions - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1. If I unlock my phone will I get updates from the carrier or manufacturer?
2. Once unlocked, how would I go about de branding the HTC?
Thanks!

Yes you will receive updates, but you won't be able to install them. To install them you must first relock, then let it update, and after the update you can unlock it again. I don't really know anything about de-branding as I always buy them off-contract, so maybe somebody else can help you with that

D-branding the HTC?

Stupidly I brought the HTC from Three and it has three's stupid boot logo on there. Hence why I'm asking all this. I am really tempted just to return it if I can and get a factory unlocked one.

New Moto X owner, have some starter questions.

Hello everybody, I just got my Moto X and I have to say it is a lovely device better than I expected in terms of how it feels in the hand. Really compact device.
I have some questions:
1. My phone has 4.4.2 but OTA fails to update it to 4.4.3. Is there any software that I can use to update the phone?
2. Is there a flashtool software where I can flash different .ftf fies?
3. Root option for 4.4.3 available?
1. There are a few threads discussing the 4.4.3 OTA, and what condition your phone must be in to receive/install the OTA. For example -> [XT1053] 4.4.3 OTA Update Zip and Android™ 4.4.3, KitKat® Rolls Out to Moto Devices I'm sure if you READ it, you'll find information that will solve your issue. Or if you post details of your phone, carrier, any tweaks you've made to it, etc...
2. I do not believe so.
3. If you have an unlocked bootloader, you *can* Root 4.4.3. If you have a LOCKED bootloader, you *can not* root 4.4.3.

Locked or unlocked bootloader? What carrier?
I have an unlocked Dev Ed Moto X running TMobile, and it accepted the 4.4.3 OTA update. I first had to revert entirely to stock 4.4.2, though.

My phone is branded with an AT&T logo on the back. Model number is xt1058 and I'm running stock 4.4.2
I don't know about the bootloader though, how can I verify that?
I would really like to update this to 4.4.3 and root it, although it's not that easy I see.
Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm even considering throwing in a bounty

Ok... here we go...
4.4.3 is not out for the ATT XT1058 yet, so you can't update to it. You need to wait for ATT to start making it available.
ATT XT1058 has a locked bootloader, and Moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock codes. Your only option to unlock the bootloader is *IF* (or maybe when) the Chinese WebSite/MiddelMan comes back to selling bootloader unlock codes. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
There is no option to root 4.4.3 when you have a locked bootloader.
If you want usable root on the X you need two parts 1. Root Exploit, and 2. An Exploit that allows for disabling Write Protection. There is now a Root Exploit for 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader, but there is not an exploit to disable write protection. This means if you'd root, then anytime you power your phone off/on, the changes, root, etc is lost. And Root style apps that need to write to /system and the like, CANT.
there is no root option for 4.4.3 with a locked bootloader

Thanks for the info fist of all. Not very good news but it is what it is.
I took a look at that link and apparently the newer models of Moto X are most likely to get an unlock code. My phone is from 2013 most probably but I don't know how to find out exactly. Can you advise on this matter as getting a code from that asian dude seems the next step for me.

There are several ways to find out your date code.. The easiest is to boot the phone in bootloader/fastboot mode, and select the option for Bar Codes. The date displayed there is the build date.

Thanks, it appears that my phone is from August 2013. I will try to get a code. Before I do that just want to double check it with you.
Once I get the unlock code, I can root 4.4.2 that I'm currently running and also future updates released by AT&T/Motorola in the near future including the 4.4.3?

Correct. Once you unlock your bootloader (which is DESTRUCTIVE, so BACKUP EVERYTHING To Your PC, or Cloud, before you do the process), you will be able to root any android version by flashing a 3rd party recovery (like TWRP), booting to the 3rd party recovery and installing SuperSU.

Unfortunately the Chinese middle man couldn't help me with the unlock code. What about contacting AT&T regarding the unlock code? Do you think it's possible asking them politely?

Zero chance. Sorry.
I mean...it's certainly possible to ask them politely, but they still won't give it to you....guaranteed.
I'm guessing you have a 2013 variant since the middleman couldn't help you?

Yes, a late 2013 model. He said that the database could become available again in the future...
If I want to contact AT&T, what would be the best way? Phone/email? I'm not an US citizen nor living in US.

I'm not an AT&T customer, so I can't advise on contact info, but I can tell you that you will be wasting your time if you even try. The chance that they will give you the code is exactly 0% no matter how nicely you ask them.
You might consider selling your AT&T XT1058 and buying one that can be unlocked, such as the XT1053, or the XT1058 Roger's variant if unlocking the BL is that important to you.
Good Luck

You have zero chance getting a boot loader unlock code from Att or Moto.
And If you are not living in the USA, then you are likely not an ATT customer, so they won't even talk to you.

That depends if you don't mind your warranty being void, you can either unlock the boot loader and flash a custom Rom or, get s-off, which will cost $25 and run an unbranded international ruu, either way your warranty will be void.
Hi there
The warranty is void anyways. I am not too bothered about that. I just want to get rid of Vodaphone presence on my phone and install a fresh copy of android.
Thanks

Ok, I feel your pain, I used to be on Vodafone UK firmware too so I know the bloat your talking about.
I paid for the s-off way myself, but there's no shame if you don't want to, it just makes things a bit easier and you can modify more.
Personally talking i think Vodafone just goes too far with its 'bloating' software and really there is NO need for it all.
What i am rtying to do is to unlock the phone and then install a fresh copy of android (not sure what version yet).
So, first step is to get 'S-OFF'.............. i will see how to get that done....
cheers

Do you know how to use adb and fastboot ? Do you also have your phone drivers installed on your computer ?
Once all that's done, or if you can post the info listed in your bootloader then we can tell you which s-off tool to use, it depends on which hboot you have on your phone.
To get to the bootloader, hold down the power button till the restart menu pops up, select restart, whilst the phone is going off, hold the volume down button, don't let go until your in the bootloader, post all that info on that screen here.

HTC One M7 Carrier branded Unlocked?

Hi, I bought a my HTC one m7 from Amazon US and it turns out the phone was not Factory Unlocked but a phone from puerto rico that was Unlocked with a Carrier unlock code or something like that, the phone came in a sealed box which is why IDK wtf happened, anyways
I was trying to update my rom from the HTC website and it didnt let me because It said I had the wrong model, so I contacted HTC support and they told me what I wrote first.
So my question here is, I cant return the phone because I bought shipping outside the us but it was from Amazon (I have prime). Can I convert my BRANDED phone to factory unlocked or something? I cant upgrade to lollipop because apparently the carrier this phone had is not upgrading it.
Thanks.

Yes you can convert it but it will require S-OFF
Once s-off is achieved, you have to change your CID number, might also require to change the MID number and then you are good to flash an unbranded RUU.
Ok, are there any risks involving S-OFF? Like bricking, or something else? Cant I just get a rom of lollipop and flash it? Or I specifically need a ROM for my carrier?
What happens if you force flash a factory unlocked rom into a branded phone?
Thanks

S-OFF disable all protection of the phone enabling you to flash any partition of the phone so yes there are high risks of bricking if you don't know what you are doing.

Yes you can unlock the bootloader, flash twrp recovery and then flash a custom lollipop rom like maximusHD, Nusenseven, insert coin... Some custom roms qill require to update the firmware to a 7.xx.xxx.x version. I'm personally using insert coin 7.0.7 and it works great.
Code:
What happens if you force flash a factory unlocked rom into a branded phone?
You can't. S-ON will prevent to flash any RUU (stock rom) that is not intended for your phone (not for your cid/mid).

Root/Unlocked Bootloader

Shopping around for a new phone, and I require one with an easily replaceable battery, so this is one of the few on my list. Is this phone able to be rooted? Is the bootloader locked? Can I install custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP? I am coming from verizon, so I imagine some of you can feel my pain. I have heard tmobile isn't nearly as restrictive, just want to make sure I can do what I want with the phone before I purchase it. Thanks for the help!
James
The T-Mobile variant is able to rooted, the bootloader is able to be unlocked, and a custom recovery (twrp) is available.

YES, however you will probably not be able to SIM Unlock the T-Mobile LG G4 H811 and end up being stuck with using them as your carrier.
Look this up on XDA and you will see MANY OF US complaining about the phone not being able to be used with other carriers.
Also, if you receive the phone and it has H81110h firmware, the phone will update to H81110n. Then if you ever try to go back to
Ha1110h, you will brick your phone and have to send it in to LG to get fixed. You will wait 2 weeks for them to fix it.
AND some of us have had the phone update on it's own and cause it to be bricked. So you will have your hands full if you buy one.

Bootloader
I recently talked to at&t about getting my bootloader unlocked and a supervisor told me the only way to do so without bricking would be to being it in to an at&t store and they will unlock the bootloader.. anybody else have this told to them?
They're most likely taking about a Sim unlock not bootloader. Also there is a method for rooting it but you have to be on a specific bootloader and you can only use it on lolipop.

Ya, I know about that root method. Unfortunately, my phone decided to update itself a few weeks ago and now its on BL 5. So that's pretty much a no go.
In relation to bringing in the store for a BL unlock, I did specifically ask and made sure the tech I was speaking with knew the difference between BL and sim unlock. In fact, i made it very known that my radio was already unlocked, I done that weeks before i talked to her.
