This might be a very noob question. But perhaps someone over here can help clear some things for me. I bought a Nook HD+ which I rooted and installed Google Play using leapinlar's excellent guide
The install seems to be working fine. Except Widgets have issues...and from what I can tell that is an issue with 2.0.6 and nothing can be done about that.
Three things I would like some clarification on are:
1. I also purchased another Nook HD+ for Mrs. and am planning on rooting that one too. Do I have to use a new SD card or can I just use the same one I made for the my hd+. Also how would the backups work for this (the backup suggested in the guide)
2. I read somewhere about Hybrid SD and booting from that. Is that method still suggested or is the one I followed the best and latest one.
3. The recent apps button on the lower right corner only shows apps which were opened on the Barnes and Nobles side of the HD+. None of the apps I opened on the android side show up. Can this be fixed?
Sorry for the multiple questions...This is my first foray in the android world and am slightly out of my element!
1. You can use the same CWM SD with no problems. But don't share the backups between the two. The backups can both be on the same SD but label them so you know which is which.
2. Hybrid puts a different operating system on your device. CM10 or CM10.1. They are completely different than stock. It is just a matter of preference which one you want.
3. You can get an app from the Play Store called recents plus that lets you see the non B&N installed apps in a recents window.

I was hoping to have the expert reply themselves (noticed you were reading this thread...was waiting in anticipation!! )
Once again going with the standard knowledge that I'm slightly dumb..
1. How would I choose to do the different backups on the same Sd card.
2. So if Hybrid puts a different OS (CM10 or 10.1) does this mean that the B&N Nook's OS is gone and I left with a purer android device?
3. So if what I am understanding about the Hybrid method...im guessing the recent apps issue will be resolved since there won't be any B&N nook side.
Some additional Qs.
4. Is it possible to access Settings for Android and not the ones which come from the B&N end (having trouble with BT keyboard..the stock settings page doesnt give pop up to enter pin code
5. Would you suggest any path (Hybrid or you version that I used) for my needs/wants. What is the best and most trouble free option to get the purest Android experience.
Sorry for posing even more questions...but figured that I should take advantage while I have you attention!
1. After you make the backup, put the card in your PC and go to /clockworkmod/backups and there should be a folder named with a date. Rename that folder with something to remind you whose it is (like brokemember backup). Then when you backup your wife's HD+, rename hers to something else (like brokemember wife backup).
2. No, the Hybrid puts the new operating system on the SD leaving the stock intact. Then you can boot too whichever you want. But the CM on Hybrid is a more pure Android.
3. Yes recents is solved on Hybrid.
4. No, stock settings is all you get on stock. Hybrid/CM has more robust settings.
5. Go with Hybrid and you can choose whichever you want to boot to.

Hi All,
I have a Nook HD that I have rooted and was running on a SDcard CM10.1 install. After Barnes and Noble gave the device the option to use the play store, I returned to the stock installation because even on a Sandisk Class 4 SD card the CM10.1 was a little laggy for my tastes. However, the device feels even laggier now than it did on CM10.1. Things like the settings drop down often take 5-10 seconds to pop up. The brightness slider doesn't follow the finger at all and lags behind where I tell it to go. In addition, auto rotating causes some ugly behavior where the wallpaper will black out part of the screen and then fill in a second or two later.
I never had any of these problems before I started using the CM10.1 install when I was just running the device stock-rooted. I'm not sure what to do to fix this, other than a factory reset which would wipe all my apps and books and things and hope for the best. Any advice guys?
You did not say which HD you were running, 8GB or 16GB, and you did not say whether you were running the Hybrid CM10.1. In any case you are probably running out of space in your internal memory. Look at sdcard and see how much free space you have. If it is less than 3GB, delete or move some of your media files from there. See if that helps.

I've got the 16 GB edition, and I've returned to the stock OS. (No more CM). As for storage, I've got 53% available of the internal storage and 94% available on my SD card so I dopn't think that's the problem.

The reason I was asking about Hybrid is just getting rid of the SD does not remove the internal Hybrid files and they can take up a lot of unnecessary internal space. You need to remove those manually.

Ah, no I was simply running the SD Card installation of 10.1. I wasn't comfortable mucking around in the actual installation files, although I was interested in the hybrid install. The main reason I went back to stock was that CM10.1 was running pretty slow from the sd card and with the play store now available to anyone, I figured I had no reason to worry about flashing g-apps and all that jazz.
EMMC install, multi user, and adb
1] When I first got my Nook HD+ ( a Mother's day present for my wife) I installed CM 10.1 on a Kingston 16 Gb SD card and it was very slow to the the point of being unusable. So I installed via the EMMC method and now it runs really good. CM turns a mostly lame product into a totally awesome one.... Thanks verygreen. Thanks Thanks Thanks.
2] CM is the only way I have found to get true multi-user capability. The stock Android with any launcher I tried did not switch accounts(email accounts were for the other user)
3] One program (MightyText) installed perfectly on my wife's account, but Google Play reported that it is not compatible with my device when I tried to install it on my account. I am guessing this is not specific to CM or the Nook.
4] I enabled ADB wireless and I am able to ping my tablet, but both Windows 7 and Ubuntu report device offline wehn I "adb devices"
5] CM 10.1 runs sooo great for being an early build. I experience a little touchiness with the wallpaper and an occasional wallpaper stopped responding. Thanks verygreen. Thanks Thanks Thanks.
6] I really want to run TWRP recovery (installed without SD card) but no luck yet. I'm not sure i'm doing it right. I copied the .zip to my boot SD, selected install from the Clockworkod recovery menu, and it reported installed. But when I reboot without the SD card, it boots back into CM 10.1. How does recovery know how to install a recovery to the recovery location?
BTW Bonehead Experience:
Don't install the wrong GAPPS. GAPPS for CM10 (not 10.1) goes into a forever loop reporting the Setup Wizard stopped

There are two ways to boot to emmc installed TWRP.
First is to hold the power and n keys together when booting.
The second is to go to settings, about tablet and tap the build number several times. That will enable developer options. Go to that and check off Advanced reboot. Then when you use the power off menu it adds the recovery option to the reboot menu.

Hey thanks a bunch this works. Actually I think it worked all along. When I hold Nook+power, after the Nook screen, I get a black screen. I then tap the power button and then it reboots into TWRP. Is this normal to to have to tap the power button?
Also, I have tried the Quick Boot app (Quick Boot -> Recovery) but it just reboots. Anyway, I'll try the Advanced reboot stuff next maybe that will fix reboot apps.

I use CWM so don't know about TWRP and tapping power. But I did have that happen on an old CWM SD. Just had to touch power and it appeared after the blank screen.
Quick boot recovery has never worked.
But the advanced reboot should work.

Two Questions re: my HD+2.1)
1. If I want to keep all of my books both from BN and sideloaded from Calbre in one file only, what is the preferred location for internal and for sdcard. I have plent of space in both but want to eliminate multiple book listings.
2. Not having sideloaded an app in quite some time, I have forgotten how/where and wish to do so with the Nook app instead of using the embedded Nook version. Would appreciate any help with where to d/l the app from and where to load and install. Will not d/l from Playstore due to embedded Nook.
Thanks in advance for any help.
You cannot run the Nook for Android app on stock, if that is what you were wanting.
The stock location for B&N books is /data/nookmedia, which is only accessible to you if you are rooted.

I am actually leaning towards going with your emmc/10.1 (which has always been my aim since getting my HD+) and viewed the 2.1 update as a temporary path until your efforts produced stable fruit. For someone who is not a "power user", could I go ahead and make that leap for reasonably stable day to day operations?
Thanks for all of your ongoing efforts!
First off, it is verygreen's CM10.1, not mine. But that aside, that is what I am running now and it is rock solid. There are a few minor bugs that users complain about, but I have zero issues.
I recommend you go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread, make a bootable CWM SD, make a nandroid backup of stock, flash verygreen's CM10.1 for emmc, flash gapps, wipe data and never look back.

I need to update Adobe Air in order to use an app. Since it is preloaded on the Nook HD+ it will not install the latest version )giving a message that this app already exists). I have searched for answers on the internet and sought help from B&N phone, online and in store. In a December 2012 posthttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034878&page=2 on this forum someone suggested removing the app using Titanium backup and then reinstalling. I was unsure if it was appropriate to bump a thread that old, but I want to be sure I will not void my warranty or cause any future problems by doing this. I am definitely a noob so problem solving future difficulties would not be as easy for me as others on this site.
I have also considered using a sd card boot to see if I could update Adobe Air then. I put CM on 2 touchpads and an sd card boot on a Nook tablet, but I am confused by the many options for the HD+. There are a few sd card options, hybrid, etc. I assume the sd card options would leave my Nook HD+ unchanged when removing the card, but some of the comments make me unsure (changing partitions, writing to internal, etc).
Can someone please suggest the safest way to update Adobe Air that will in no way effect the stock Nook or my warranty.
Thank You

You do not say what you are running. If you are running stock, you do not want to remove anything with TB. It will reset the device.
And yes, generally running from SD leaves your stock intact.
I don't know the best way to update adobe air. You probably can't if running stock.

Thank you for your response. I assumed since the person in the original thread couldn't update Adobe Air that meant they were running stock also. I appreciate you stopping me from erasing something I shouldn't.

Hello fellas, so I followed one of Leapinlar's guides on how to install CM11 onto my Nook HD+ 16gb. Everything went great and my Nook has been performing flawlessly all this time. I happen so have two Nook HD+ devices, and now that I know how much better CyanogenMod is compared to the stock OS, I want to install CM11 on the second one as well. I still have the bootable 2GB SD card I used to install CM11 on the Nook (used same card to backup stock B&N OS). At this stage, I plan on using the Nook until it dies on me, gets broken, or stolen. I don't see why I would go back to the stock OS.
1. Could I use the same bootable SD card to install CM11 onto the second Nook? was the serial # or anything of that sort saved onto the SD card making it unique to the device or something?
2. I have already done a Full baseline backup of my Nook on a FAT32-formatted SD card that isn't bootable. Is this backup better than the original bootable backup SD I made originally? Why would I still need the original stock B&N OS backup?
I couldn't find any threads on the subject, so I'm kind of hesitant to try it myself. Don't want to brick the Nook. Maybe one of you has tried it. Well, Happy Holidays to all of you. Thanks for the great forum.

My understanding is that even bootable variants of CM11 still go to the Nook's internal storage to get device serial #, MAC address, etc. So, one bootable SD card should be portable between devices.
I originally created a bootable SDcard variant of CM11 and liked it so much, that I decided to install it internally. Before I did that, however, I did back up the entire device (in case I decide to sell it). I then (search for the thread) made a bootable SDcard with B&N's OS v2.20. That way, if there's ever a reason you want to go back to the B&N OS, you can.

Yes the same bootable SD can be used on multiple HD+ devices. But the backup files from the first device should be moved somewhere else since there is not room for two different backups on a 2GB card. And that first backup is unique to that device and should not be used on the second device, but the basic CWM is ok to use.
The original stock backup is useful if you want to go back to the way it was before installing CM. But it is not really necessary since you can flash the stock ROM from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature (item 6) to get back to original out of the box condition. This might be useful if you need to return the device to B&N under warranty. Having CM installed on it when you return it voids the warranty.

I'm sorry, one last question. Would it be accurate to say that I can drag and drop the original B&N backup file I have in my 2GB sd card to my computer, zip it, save it, delete it from the sd card, and then do the same process for the second Nook HD+? Zip, save, and delete the original backup. Would the sd card still be bootable to install CM if I were to play around with only the backup and nothing else? DeanGibson and you leapinlar have pretty much answered my question completely. At this point I just want to pick my brain, all of this was pretty interesting. I won't bother you guys with any more questions regarding this subject, so thank you very much for the help.

Yes you can copy the backup files to your PC and delete the originals, but there is no need to zip them since they are already compressed and it is best to leave them native since they need to retain their md5 sums. The card will still be bootable.

Hello,
I have tried my best to follow the rules and dummy articles that are posted.
I downloaded the partition magic software
I downloaded the windisk32 Imager software
I have downloaded the 3 files from links for oviation and others to get CM 10 to work.
Or at least I think I did.
Once I put my sd card into my nook and try to do what the instructions say.
The Nook flash start up screen just keeps turning off and on, and on and off.
I followed and deleted everything off the sd card first, then partition it. Then I set it
to what the tutorial says I believe which was call it boot. Then choose primary fat32 I think.
Then I use windisk imager to load the boot on.
Then that is where i get in to trouble I think. Or maybe I am not even doing the previous parts right? But, I am doing it step by step and it is doing what I think it should be doing as far as the tutorial is concerned. I was using this one to show the tutorial on the PM and WD32.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YYXtGAt6GY
Anyway, I am trying to upgrade my nook OS which has only 2.2 on it. No further updates are coming as you all know I am sure.
So, can any one help me or explain to me what I am doing wrong.
I downloaded the three pieces I thought were right as far as the nook is concerned.
cm-11-20140210-SNAPSHOT-M3-acclaim
cm-11-20140221-NIGHTLY-acclaim
gapps-jb-20130813-signed
Those were right to put on the sd card right, Do I just drag and drop them over and then put the disk in the nook and turn it on. I did use the windisk imager to load the boot file bot the others were dragged and dropped...... I am confused on what I am doing wrong.
Please help.
I don't even need the latest and greatest. I just want one that will work with flash so I can watch my sports on my nook hd+ 2.2.2 color version 9 inch screen.
You can email me directly if you wish. If so PM me privately and I will reply or just email if you know where to find my email address.
Thanks, Karl James.

Note only that, the files for the HD+ are different than that for the HD.
If he has a Nook HD+, he needs to use "ovation" files. And, he is trying to apply multiple versions of CM-11 at the same time.
Files are downloaded
Ok Guys,
I downloaded the two links for the
cm-11-####-ovation.zip (CM11) (the CM ROM zip)
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=ovation
Google Apps (needed for Play Store)
pa_gapps-modular-micro-4.4.2-20140426a-signed.zip
These are the two correct files to download.
Then I extract them into a folder on my desktop. Called My Nook Files.
Just so I know where they are at?
Now I need to know if I did the right things with partition and win disk image programs.
I formatted it, then did the create partition, set to 500mb, primary instead of logical.
And set to active. Is that all I do?
Then I just drag and drop the two other folder files of the Ovation and apps over to the sd card folder right?
Then take the card and put in nook after it is power down and turn it on with card in it. Then Hold the N key while the power is coming up then it should show the CM software, right?
Am I understanding this incorrectly or correctly?
Thanks, Karl
