[Q] Bricked HD+ from installing gapps? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently purchased an Nook HD+ and I wanted to install the Google Play store and enable 3rd party app installs. I followed the thread here on the forums. I booted from the SD card no problem. I installed the GAPPS + Extras v2, and the Location services Zips. I removed the sd card and rebooted. Everything loaded fine, but I missed the prompt for enabling location services so I was going to reboot and reflash it. After the Nook shut down, it would not power on again. Any ideas what would cause this? Did I do something wrong or miss a step? Any input would be appreciated. I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, and holding power and nook button while plugged in, and nothing helped. Got a new Nook and I wand the play store, but not another brick. Thanks!!

It is not bricked. Remove the SD and it will boot to stock fine. Some devices are finicky when trying to power on with a bootable SD plugged in. Just keep trying, sometimes just waiting a while and it will boot to SD too.

I have removed the sd card. I even made a new one with another sd card and it won't boot with or without the card in it

Without the SD in, hold the power button for many seconds. Then let go and touch power for only a second or two and release. And the battery is charged, right?

That didn't work. Yes it is charged. I have also left it plugged in for hours and tried all the previously mentioned ideas both with and without the power cord being plugged in.

Well, you did not brick it. These are really hard to brick. It may be defective and need a warranty exchange.

Ok thank you for all the suggestions and your work getting the gapps working and making them easy to install. Gonna give it one more shot. One other question. Once the gapps are installed, is it safe to remove any of the apps I don't want or is it best to just leave them all there? Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

You can remove any extra apps you want, but it is best to keep some sort of launcher if you don't want zeam so you can still get to play store. The gapps themselves are on system and best to leave them there.

Ok thanks. One last thing. In my case do I need to block updates from barnes and noble, or is that only important if I am rooted(Which I don;t plan on doing)? Thanks again for all the knowledge.

If you don't block updates, you will lose Play Store when it updates itself. And you may not be able to put Play Store back if they modify the ROM somehow to prevent it. Your installed apps will stay though.

Flash the location services zip and activate it when you reboot and then install Google maps. That may help.

New to Nook.

Just got my Nook today, and am interested in rooting it. I'm looking for the best method to do so.
I have rooted my HTC Inspire using Bubby's one click method, so I'm not completely unfamiliar with the process, but want to make sure of the preferred method for the Nook before I started.
Any and all insight would be appreciated.

I just use the version room manager has.
There's a post for the new market here in the nook forums, but I can send you the apk if you can't find it.

That would be appreciated, things I'm wanting to do:
- Market (I've got various items I paid for, that I would like to try).
- Fix ROM Manager, when trying to download, I get "Must upgrade...", then a force close. I'm assuming this is because I don't have the paid version installed, which I can download from Market (since I purchased it)
- Install Amazon Kindle (for the irony factor).
Any insight would be great, since I'm obviously new at this (I've owned my Nook for about 15 hours)

I used the method described in Cyanogen's wiki and had the same issue. I ended up having to install through recovery instead of ROM Manager.
So is rom manager not working for you?

OK, I am now officially pissing myself. I am now able to get into Clockwork Recovery, I've wiped Factory/Cache/Dalvik, applied CM, and after a system reboot, it just goes back into recovery.
Help!
I am not having any luck whatsoever, and am afraid I bricked my device.
I've attempted to do a CM install (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide), but after putting the image on, and rebooting, it goes to black, but never comes back up.
Not sure what to try at this point.
OK, something new, I was able to return back to 1.0.1, but when I get to step 5 of setup, it indicates there is a problem, and to call B&N. It reports that the serial number, model number, and Mac address ing as "MISSING", and it is at version 1.0.1.
I do have a blue dot on the box.

So... How to jump in?

Hello all!
New Nook Color owner here. Love the little thing but I'm not sure what to do next!
Ideally I'd like to root it, get the CM7 nightlies on it, and have a generally stable system. There's lots of resources and tutorials on it, but where do I start? What tweaks should I apply? What's the best nightly build so far (one with deep sleep working)? should I install on the emmc or on a class 2 sandisk?
Help would definitely be appreciated.

Starting with the SD card install of CM7 will let you try it without any risks, so try that first. Sandisc Class 2 is fast enough for it, although be aware there will be little lags here and there, particularly in the market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
The biggest problem for some people is writing the image to the card.. If it doesn't boot into CM7, it didn't burn right, period.
I suggest you put both the CM7 nightly and the Google Apps on the SD card for the initial install and it'll install both at the same time. When you get booted and you're setting up your Google Account hit the menu button and you'll be able to connect to wifi, then continue through setup normally.
yup having the right tools is the beginning:
SD cards probably 2 or 3, 4 gb sandisk cards Class-2 or 4
If you plan to move your stock B N to a bootable sandisk card, get an 8 GB one as well.
Then either 16 or 32 gb.
All of these of course sandisk.
You'll need a reader either small one directly for those disks or use a SD adapter.
Thanks for the responses guys. Long-term, would installing to the eMMCbenefit me more than on the SD, speedwise?
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
I think that if you have very little use for the stock software, which would be basically for the special ebooks that have some interactive aspects. i.e. the little elephant.
Then you might as well emmc the alternative rom.
Now, if you use the nook as a ereader a lot and have a lot of books already and some of them interactive, you have the option of dual boot, boot of the sdcard (either the alt rom, or moving the stock over to the SD card).
It really depends.
I haven't bought any books outside of the ones that came with the nook color and so, I just backed up my stock rom and nandroided it. Eventually, I came to a night where I wanted to let my kids check out elephant story, so I ended up reflashing the stock, pushing the stock over to an SD card, so if I ever need to boot up that book for them, I can do it.
Otherwise I use cm7 for everything I need.
FWIW, full instructions on installing to emmc are here. Don't bother installing Dalingrin's OC kernel though separately, as it is already included with the recent CM7 nightlies.

I have run it from both the eMMC and uSD. I really don't notice a difference.
I run from uSD using verygreen's "size agnostic..." guide now because I really like my stock B&N experience too so I put the stock ROM back on the eMMC. This way I can return it no problems if it needs warranty work...
Btw, putting CM7 on it is not rooting it, you are completely replacing the ROM on it. Rooting means leaving the stock ROM on it, and modifying it to allow for additional apps and marketplaces.

Wrong. CM7 is pre-rooted. Rooting means gaining SU (administrator) privileges. This is used to give you more control and functionality on ANY rom or phone.

[Q] CAN'T connect to PLAY STORE after update to 4.3.1 (cm 10.2.20131102-SNAPSHOT -M1)

Wish I stayed with 4.2.2
This was allegedly a STABLE version as those are the only ones Im pdating to per my CM update settings.
I do not use nightlies.
Unfortunately I lost connection to GOOGLE PLAY STORE on both of my Nook hd+ tablets...same night I ran the update to 4.3 from 4.2
Im getting the constant *No connection..Retry* error.
Watched many *fix-it* videos on YouTube.....none of the tricks worked.
cleared, data, cache, force stopped, rebooted, unistalled, reinstalled......nothing.
unistalled again 4.4.21 and even istalled the latest 4.4.22 Gogle play store......still the same error.
very frustrated since this was allegedly a STABLE version.
Now I cannot access the Play Store with both of our tablets.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated !

That did the trick.....
I remember the need for new gaps when 4.3 came out a while ago.
I thought it needed to be done only then by those that wanted to upgrade early.
I (wrongly) presumed that the new gapps would be included with new 'stable' versions CM ROMs.
(Especially since no warning or instructions for new gapps popped up during 4.3 installation).
Now I know that gapps is something that always needs to be installed separately.
Thank you for your reply leapinlar !!

The guide you linked attempts to look for solutions to the issue, which may not solve the issue.
The best/only way is to update gapps if you upgrade your Android version.
You can download all gapps from here: http://goo.im/gapps (they are current changing servers which host the files, so you may run into problems if you try right now; later on should be perfect).
All the best.

Home and power for 20 seconds is too longtime. Even if it tried to turn on, if would power back off before 20 seconds. Try for 8 seconds, then release power followed by n.

To get to internal recovery, from powered off press power and n together for about 8 seconds, then release power and then release n. Don't hold power too long or it will turn itself back off. It will boot to whatever recovery you have installed. Stock recovery looks different and will only ask if you want to clear data. You can do nothing else with it. If you have CWM or TWRP recovery installed to internal memory it will boot to them.

The only reason I did it was that I wasn't aware of rev 3 and didn't want the HD+ to be updating itself on its own whim which, looking at the B&N forums, it seems to be doing, with some mixed results. If I had had rev 3 I wouldn't have bothered. I was hopeful that the crosswords and hulu+ apps had been made uninstallable but they reappear after a reboot. The 'upgrade' seems to be more about B&N offering services than any improvement to the user experience, at least from what I've seen.
