Always activate HTC One before customizing - Sprint HTC One (M7)

So I bought my HTC One but didn't activate it for a couple of days. Like many of you, I have tons of personalized settings and apps that I use on a daily basis. I just couldn't afford to sit down and spend 8 consecutive hours customizing the phone (the average amount of time it takes me to fully customize). I need a fully customized phone in order to do my job (and just stay organized in general) so I continued to use my current phone (LG Optimus G) and over the course of about 3 days, kept the HTC One in flight mode (thereby preventing activation) and used it on wifi. During these three days where I would have an hour here or there, I unlocked, installed TWRP, rooted, installed stock deodex, then methodically installed all my apps and settings.
I finally finished about an hour ago and was ready to activate. The phone wouldn't do the handsfree activation even with Sprint's assistance but it finally errored out, booted me into a self service menu where I could activate the phone by providing my phone number and PIN, and it went through. The phone then proceeded to do a bunch of Sprint customizations and during one of the reboots, the phone booted into TWRP and did a factory system reset on its own. And just like that, all of my hard work over the last 3 days was gone (though obviously root and the unlocked status remain). This came as a surprise to me as I have used the delayed activation while I customize procedure I described above on all my recent previous smartphones (including the Optimus G) and it was never a problem. I do understand now though that after further research, Sprint ships these phones with zero to minimal Sprint customization and only after activation does the bulk of the customizations (and the auto factory reset) get installed/executed.
So I am now simply providing this information so others hopefully do not make the same mistake I did. If anyone is in a similar situation as I was where you usually delay activation while you customize, I strongly suggest activating the phone first and if needed, ESN swap back to the old device, then you can take your time installing apps and customizing the HTC One. Just have to do that initial activation first though before you start customizing otherwise everything you did will get wiped out during the Sprint customization/activation of the phone. Lesson definitely learned for next time.

my phone arrives tomorrow. Do you have to accept the sprint customizations?

There is no option to reject the customizations. It does it automatically once its been activated.

The reason it does that is because when it comes out of the box, there isn't a single Sprint customization on it. They set it up so that when you activate it, then it shoots over all the Sprint branding and bloatware.

this is probably why apps are not pre-installed.

You could have just pulled your old phones data app folder and flashed it or adb pushed it to the one... You may have had a few minor issues, bout it.

This was one person's derailment. This person tried to share the issue they had. While some reading beforehand would have helped prevent these problems, this doesn't leave the issue up for a bash fest.
This issue is now done.
OP please do some research and add more content to your intro, otherwise this discussion will continue.

Why were my comments deleted? Me and the OP came to an agreement and I got an understanding of why he did it a certain way... Deleting our comments doesn't make sense.

[Q] Seriously.. this shutting down thing is pissing me off

Seriously..
what is the deal with the phone just randomly shutting off. I've read the posts and am on my THIRD phone!!
I thought I had one the "Captivate Lottery" because it wasn't shutting down for a few weeks... then one day, BAM!
Then the next day, BAM... now it seems like it may go for a few days, then shut off a bunch again, then go for a few more days then shutdown again.
Now, I'm happy if it doesn't shutdown 3 or 4 times a day.
I'm past my 30 days.. what the hell should I do?
I understand your frustration because it is, in fact, a lottery. I won on the third try, but it obviously will take you more effort.
The only app that has caused problems for some is SetCPU. I suspect that certain settings were mis-managed by the users and that the app itself is o.k.
What should you do? If you purchased your unit at an AT&T corporate store, see if the Warranty Department will permit you to once again exchange the phone at the store. If you have multiple stores in the area, try another one. Maybe their batch is more stable. Under any circumstance, do not settle. Get a unit that works to your satisfaction.
Thanks for your kind words... I have a co-worker that has the same phone and his has NEVER had a shutdown.. all 3 of mine started shutting down after a couple of weeks.
My next question since I've had to return/reset this phone so many times I am sick of having to re-download/install/configure it over and over again.
What is the best/easiest way to restore all your settings and apps again after returning it?
I think you will have to call ATT and ask for a replacement. Since you are past your thirty day limit, you will be offered a refurbished phone. This is the process im going through right now. I went to an ATT store and they told me since im past my 30 they cant do anything. Only way was to call ATT warrantee

You're in luck. Download Titanium Backup from the Market. After that's accomplished, you need to understand that the default backup location for files is internal to the phone. The Catch-22 is that you'd be returning the phone...along with the backup! Here's how you can backup everything and retain your "stuff" for restoration to your new phone (you'll need to purchase an external SD card if you don't already have one installed. Inexpensive.)
Goal: Instruct Titanium Backup to automatically store your backup files on an external SD card so that restoring the backups in the event you need to exchange your phone becomes a convenient task.
Resolution: In Titanium's preferences change the backup folder name to sd/TitaniumBackup, as the default TitaniumBackup folder is, by default, internal to your phone. Then create your "portable" backup now to be domiciled on your external SD card.
Using Titanium Backup:
First, go to Settings, Applications, Development and check USB debugging. TB needs this.
In Titanium Backup select Backup/Restore then press the menu button. Select Batch then the "RUN" button you'll pick is the one that reads "Backup all user apps + system data." Then press Select all, then press Run the batch operation. After it completes the job use a File Manager (like Astro) to make sure that the backup is, in fact, on the external SD card.
Remove the external SD card and await the arrival of your new phone. Once received, install the SD card in your new phone and restore the backup.
Maybe I've gotten very lucky - I started getting "Sleeping Death" a few days after I have received the phone.
Rooted, Applied the Voodoo Fix (which uses a vanilla kernel I believe?) and it seems to have fixed it.. Hasn't done it in a week now.
So I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is software and not hardware related.
Nice Jack! You rock!
I'll think I'll follow your advise. Maybe then I wont be as upset when I return my phone for the 25th time..
I hate to say it, great phone when it works but this is the buggiest hardware I've seen. Imagine if this was going on with the iphone, we'd all be getting new phone's and there would be some huge news media about it.
I wonder if all the people with the custom ROM's have the same issue?
Got my replacement in the mail, it looks brand new to me. So far so good for the day, installed LauncherPro, AIM, MSN, and probably installing games later. It has been fine. The old phone I am sending back shut off pretty much every time I tried picking it up to check the time about 8-10 times a day.

When I first got my third phone (the stable one) my heart skipped a beat each time I looked at it, worried that I'd find it turned off. After a while you learn to take it for granted that it's "solid." Hope your good luck continues.

Thanks, hopefully it will be fine. Luckily somehow I ended up with 7 screen protectors (3 from ATT, 2 Bodyguards, and 2 from Stealth guards when they were giving them away + shipping cost) I will put one on it later today maybe and since I have so many, it won't really matter if, hopefully not, I have to send it back later or take it off.
I was all happy for awhile but that ended. Now its about 6 or more times a day.
I am tring different settings and now a different launcher to see if its something to do with the stock software installed.
I am intrigued with the voodoo hack but I am not sure I want to go that far yet. I respond if I find anything that is successful.

Don't waste your time. It's hardware-based. Anyone going down the road of trying to assess which software is causing the shutdowns is playing with themselves. Well, at least you don't have to look your best.
Exchange it. Your other alternative is to...exchange it. In other words, (well, you get the picture).
I agree, trade it in. I have had this new one for a week and no shutdowns.

Well, This is interesting...
So after my rant on this exact topic, I decided to give one last thing a try.
I changed my default launcher to launcher pro...
Its been almost a day with no shutdowns (it was doing it 6-7 times a day).
If I make it through today with no shutdowns, I'll post again.
Wish me luck!

[Q] No cellular data

My first day with the Droid bionic... it's my first non-Samsung Android phone, so I'm not sure what to think.
In the midst of trying to figure it out and get it all setup (rooted, Titanium Backup restore, apps only), and my data drops out. Apparently for good.
I had solid 4G data when I first opened up the phone this afternoon. I ran some speed tests and switched to WiFi. I left the house a bit later and realized I couldn't open a webpage. I noticed the WiFi was still on, so I shut it off, but the cellular data never came back.
Tried putting it in airplane mode and back, rebooted (several times), tried the data toggle on the power control widget, I even forced the phone into CDMA only mode (and back).
I'm stumped. Has anyone else seen this? Is there any kind of possibility that restoring apps or rooting could have anything to do with it? I have not seen this problem over many a ROM on the Vibrant, and then the Droid Charge. I even loaded a GB ROM on the Charge and restored all my apps without issue.
Any help would be appreciated. I'd really not like to have to wipe the phone and start over.
I had something similar happen although I'm not rooted yet. For 3 days I was golden. Then I installed switchpro widget to see how the 3G/4G toggle worked with the Bionic and it made my mobile connectivity wonky. I uninstalled it. It still is wonky today.
LTE is there then goes away a reboot corrects it until it goes away. 3G is exactly the same. Turn on WIFI and the LTE disappears. It's supposed to stay up just turn white like it did for 3 days prior to installing then uninstalling switchpro. It could just be coincidence with the switchpro thing idk. I'm not all that knowledgeable with APN's, but after some research somehow I believe mine got mixed up via switchpro. Getting a new Bionic tomorrow.
Well, no data at all. If I'm outof wifi area, I have no data access. Only phone calls and text.

I'd get another one then. Or if you don't want to do that get a different brand
I think I'll just try a hard reset. I'm sure it was something I did with Titanium backup... I'll just have to figure out what.
Or you could try a factory reset to see if that solves it
EDIT: I see you thought of that 1st
Something similar happened to me. The only way I could fix it was by restarting the phone until the data crashed again. I solved this problem (or I think I did, still testing it) by removing all my widgets. I have a strong suspicion it was a widget doing this (specifically the AIX weather widget, but I am not sure yet).
So, I suggest that you remove all of your widgets and restart your phone and see what happens.
The hard reset did the trick. I think maybe it was me restoring the [SMS/.../APN] setting (can't remember the middle setting) in TB. I didn't do it this time and all seems well. It was green, so I thought 'why not'.
I'll see how it goes from here on out.
I'm thinking its got to be something related to wifi. every time I disconnect from wifi I can't connect to data unless I reset my phone.

Glad to hear that. Factory reset did not fix it for me. Will have a new tomorrow
I am also having this problem. If Motorola still used vanilla android this wouldn't be an issue. I hate when manufacturers feel it necessary to fix something that isn't broke. I am sad to see how many people are experiencing this problem because if it was isolated to my phone and a few others then a warranty replacement would do the trick. I now feel like I wasted 380 on phone and accessories. I placed a call to Verizon tech support and their as clueless as usual. I hope an update is released soon that fixes this issue (or a custom rom). I remain hopeful that we start seeing good things on our Motorola devices now that google owns moto.
NOTE: I wish people would start reading through existing threads before starting new ones. I started a thread to this effect back on day 3. Several others have started threads to this effect as well. I think there are now 4 or 5 on this very same subject.

[Q] Captivate loop soft reboot???

I am a broadcast engineer and have been a Linux user for the last decade. So when Android hit it was only a matter of whose device. After a lot of research and waiting for 6 months for the initial “teething pains” to pass selected the Captivate for several reasons.
As a broadcast engineer 24/7 reliable cellular communication with data is a professional necessity not a convenience. For that reason my wife always has the same phone as I carry as a backup. If mine gets broken or unusable for any reason we switch SIMs and I am back to work. So we both received our initial “trade up” Captivates at the same time. About 25 days after receiving our phones mine started randomly shutting itself off. After three warranty replacements finally got one that stayed on. Six months later wife's was replaced due to no audio from the speaker. Later after my father past my mother merged into our family plan and choose Captivate as well.
So we have three Captivates in our family. Love the phones. Mine by my nature is loaded with “all the bells & whistles.” Lots of app, widgets and rooted. As soon as I am comfortable with my choice and feel prepared will take the plunge and try flash a custom ROM. More than likely several through ROM manager of some kind. I really like to looks of the four tap lock and other features only a custom ROM is going to get you. Besides I am a “power user,” which my wife thinks translates to “if it works, it doesn't have enough features.” My wife has a few widgets & apps as well as my mother to a lesser degree.
In the last 90 days we all three have been experiencing something that I describe as a “loop soft rebooting.” Started with my wife, she described it a “loop rebooting.” Every weekday from 10:00 to 10:20. Once I had a chance to observe I found it does not do a complete reboot. It does not show the shut down animation like a controlled shut down. Or the turn on animation like a power up after a complete shut down or OS crash. I would describe it as more like a “soft boot.” Almost like a launcher crash, but it also has to rescan the SD media. It vibrates once with the screen off or on, in use or out. then twice more, another 8 to 10 seconds another vibrator alert then the launcher appears and starts to load widgets, apps & scan media. Completely unresponsive to any key input until after the launcher reopens. The wife has never used anything but the AT&T/Samsung stock launcher. I did all the usual things. Backup, factory reset, restore. Still does it. Backup, Hard reset, restore, still doing it. Hard reset, rebuild from scratch, no restore, stayed completely vanilla, no apps or widgets at all. It still does it. Then mine started doing it. I was using ADW Launcher, switched to Launcher Pro, have even dropped down to using the original launcher since it acts like a launcher crash. No affect. Went through all the above same process with the same results. Mine does it's act between 5:00 & 5:20. About a week later my mother reported hers does the same thing between 4:00 & 4:20. Interesting side note, if we turn off the radio (airplane mode) it does NOT do it, completely stable in PDA mode. But when we turn the phone back on, it then starts the process and runs for 20 minutes and stops. I have been collecting logs off my wife and my own phone but work duties have not given me the opportunity to read through the thousands of lines of logs to find a “smoking gun.” Now in the last week we see the same activity more often and for longer periods. Because turning off the radio stops the activity there has to be a trigger from the network. It also uses lots of data during these periods. Maxed out my wife's data plan the last 3 months. We have Lookout Security installed on all three phones and it reports no Trojan's, viruses etc... Also the Hard reset should have killed anything like that. I have done hard resets three time on my wife and my own phone and rebuild from scratch now. We have left her phone completely factory fresh only adding back her contacts through Gmail. I have Titanium Backup and have tried “freezing” & unfreezing” everything I can think of. Nothing but turning off the radio seems to effect this issue.
Has anybody out there experienced anything like this???
Damn dude, can I get the cliff notes?
If you're thinking of taking the custom rom plunge, I would say to go for it. The reason I suggest this is that most custom roms will also flash a different modem, which might allow your phone to connect to the towers in a way that will prevent the hot reboots you're seeing. Just make sure to do the normal backups (Titanium backup) of stuff you want to save before flashing.
^ +1
sound74145,
yeah since ur rooted, i would suggest flashing a different modem (radio) if u don't want to flash a Dev Rom yet.
What is ur Baseband version now... i897uckb1 ?? If so try i897ucKH3.
Check the modem stickied thread. It should be attached behind the paperclip at the title of the thread.

Freezing and bootloops.

Anybody else having these problems? 2nd day to have it and it would freeze up and bootloop. At one point it was off for 2-3 hours and I couldn't get to fastboot. Finally I got it to factory reset twice and its doing fine for now. Unfortunately I'm on shift for 24 hours or I'd make Verizon give me a new one.

Could it be some app that you installed? Haven't had any problems myself with it.
Have you switched from dalvik to art?
I've had zero issues with bootloops so far.

none here
Had one this morning. Phone froze during a phone call, and then got stuck at the boot screen before the animation. Rebooted it by holding the volume and power button and it's worked since.
No problems here, have played games for several hours straight with no issues and have been playing with it all day.
Mine was solid for about 4 hours and its starting back up again. Maybe I have a lemon.

sounds like a defective unit or something.
i'd do a wipe, dont install any apps, see if it works fine or not. if it does, probably an app issiue. if you are getting problems even after the reset, its the phone.
Same issue here. Kept randomly rebooting, but only occasionally. Did a few factory resets, installing only essential apps each time thinking it was one of my apps that didn't play nice with Turbo (even though they played just fine with my Razr Maxx and Galaxy S5) to no avail. Last night, did a factory reset, didn't install any apps (nor did I update any of the pre-installed ones) and this morning, endless bootloop. I can't get it to stop. I'm really starting to hate this startup sound. LOL!
My phone locks up occasionally. Always restarts itself. I'm not sure what has been causing my phone to lock up but I haven't been able to pinpoint an action that is specifically creating the issue.
Sent from my XT1254
So I couldn't figure out a way to just power it down (all the usual button combinations just kept rebooting it, which then continued the bootloop) so I just figured I'd let it bootloop until the battery ran out. After about 3 hours of bootlooping, it just finally booted. I didn't touch anything. Weird. Maybe it's like a 4 year old temper tantrum, just let them get it out of their system and all will be better in a couple hours. Hahaha!
I have a phone that it's going this as well. I can get into recovery and reset but that didn't work. If I try to wipe cache the phone reboots and freezes which seems abnormal. I never had a phone reboot after wiping cache. I loaded the phone into fastboot and using RSD Lite I flashed the original software into the phone to no help. I did notice though that in the fastboot option that my baseband is blank. Might just be a bad device.? Does anyone know where I can find stock firmware 21.44 (that has the VoLTE option)?

With four turbos there seems to be more of a user error than system. you either disabled a needed apk, installed an apk that doesn't play nice, or you took an ota and havent completed an FDR. Its recommended and has been posted on here multiple times throughout this site/forum that always, always do a FDR with an update.

I'm not running any additional apks at this point and haven't since the second replacement device. Apparently, I just have good luck with this phone, that I now despise, and wish I could get rid of. I followed all the disable guides for what was safe, and I'm not sure what an FDR is, but if you tell me I'll give it a shot. Last replacement came updated as well. At this point this current model doesn't even receive phone calls, because it just doesn't work correctly.

m7 sprint - random reboots only w/non-sense roms

Alright, I have an issue that's been getting ridiclious the past few months. Ironically it all started when trump took office, but that's another subject....
On any rom besides a sense based rom, and i've tried alot, AICP, CM, Lineage, candy, etc etc. I'll have random reboots when getting text messages, or random reboots when trying to send a text message. I've tried all these roms wiped, with and without gapps, and i end up with the exact same result. Straight up random reboots.
The moment i wipe and restore the stock sense i imaged immeditately unlocking, no issues. I flash badboyz, no issues. I've been experimenting the past few months, and i can honestly say it only happens on non-sense roms. I thought it was because of gapps. So i ran CM11, which has been flawless since 2014, and without gapps, after a fresh flash and boot, the 1st text message i receive, instant hard reset.
The phone was s-on when i bought it, i took the latest OTA to grab carrier and OEM software and radios, then i did only the bootloader unlock, flashed TWRP, imaged my system. that was back in 2014 when the phone was first released. Since unlocking i've been running cm11 flawlessly for several months, at times a week or so of uptime, and i use my phone heavily.
Now it's to the point, when i flash a clean CM11, no gapps, just sitting on the table with the tethering on, either USB or wifi, it'll reboot. Sometimes itll get into a reboot loop and it'll take up to 10x of hard resets until it gets android fully loaded (mind you no gapps, no 3rd party, just the rom itself) before it's usable, that's if it doesn't run itself dead with the bootloops.
What's blowing my mind, if it's hardware, then why no issues on sense? Why only issues on non sense, and why now and not before? and the differences are all i can think of is software from: htc, sprint, google
When those 3 are removed, stability issues. but why now and all of a sudden?
anyone want me to supply something from adb? this has truly got me interested. I'm willing to copy and paste and upload some info. I'm really wondering what this issue is.
Thanks!
Bump.
Could a weak battery have something to do with it?
Does sending a text message require a moment of amp draw over the radio transmitter?

Here's what I would say:
Because non-Sense ROMs don't have the same drivers, HTC developers, etc, they tend to be less stable as a group. The developers work hard to mitigate that, but the random reboots are the hardest for them to figure out. If you go through non-Sense ROM threads for years, you'll see that common complaint.
Now, as for CM11 being solid and now it's not, my guess is that updated firmware, radios, etc caused it. CM11 is quite a few years old and was written under older radios.
When the m7 was my daily driver, I had good luck on these three ROMs. They had the occasional reboot, but it was about once a week at most and rebooted right back in.
Resurrection Remix
PAC ROM
NusenSeven (Sense based from the m9)
I would agree to that... Except...
Ive been running the same firmware/radios for the past 4 years.
I got the phone, did the Ota update, unlocked, never changed.
Since then cm11 (the same zip I've been using) has gotten ridiculously unstable since the beginning of the year. Just so odd when it's been flawless, sometimes a month of uptime, and in a month I'll suck in 400Gb through mobile data. And in all this "all of a sudden" unstableness, stock rom work ok.
Just coincidence removing HTC/Google/sprint software gives issues, when before it didn't matter.
As I was typing this, I got a sms reply, instant hard reboot.
I'm going to replace the battery and see if that makes a difference.

I've been also considering if the memory needs to be trimmed?

I would agree to that... Except...
Ive been running the same firmware/radios for the past 4 years.

Misread and thought you updated radios recently. Not sure how replacing the battery would help, but you never know.
I had been running the three ROMs mentioned above with minimal issues when I used the m7 as my daily driver. I had run the latest RUU (see development section) to update to the latest radios, firmware, etc first. As I recall, all three were good. NusenSeven being stock based was most stable, but the others were good too.

Worth a shot, but your instability seems relatively reproducible. Personally never done it. So I'm not sure that would help, but like I said before, you never know.
Well, tonight I'm going to replace the battery.
If that diesnt help, going to relock and ruu just to make sure, unlock and flash the same zip I've been using for years.
If there's still issues, something is going down regarding big brother not enjoying his stuff on my phone.
That's my take and opinion.

Apparently it was the battery.
Ive Had zero issues since the swap.
Sent/received over a 100 messages total, tethering to ps4 and roku for Netflix, Bluetoothing pandora from my phone itself playing a 720 mkv,
Working the **** out of it, no reboots.
Odd why sense roms were not sensitive. Must be something in the kernel?

Great! I'm glad it worked. It is odd, but what you say makes sense. Maybe the Sense ROM had something optimized in the kernel or ROM that the non-Sense ones don't. That's why I love this site; I learn something new everyday. Thanks for putting the results of your work in the thread for future members who may have the same problem.:highfive:
Well, update
It eventually got back into its old habits of randomly rebooting after ending phone calls or sending /receiving messages.
Soon after that it had issues if not coming out of airplane mode, which would require a hard restart, soft restarts were unsuccessful.
About week ago my son wanted to play on it, so i enabled airplane mode so he wouldn't accidentally call anyone.
Enabled airplane mode.
Handed phone to him.
Within 30 seconds I took it back, and in this time frame all he was doing was holding it/touching screen.
The phone now endlessly reboots to the initial HTC logo for maybe 5 seconds, goes black, and repeats. It will do this until the battery is dead.
Plugging in charger results in no battery charge state, screen or LED. After several moments of being plugged in with no signs of life, it'll light up to HTC screen, only 5 seconds later to go black and repeat, endlessly.
Holding power + volume down I can access the bootloader, which before it resets again I can pick recovery option.
It'll then reboot into HTC screen, saying entering recovery up at the top, but never doing so, and continue with boot loops.
The power button is not stuck, as holding only volume down will not encourage bootloader initialization.
Ideas?

It seems to have gone beyond the Sense working but non-Sense not working issues it started with. At this point, I'd probably try to RUU the thing back to stock and see if that fixes it. If not, I'd venture something hardware related. I wrote a guide on how to do this mainly because I kept forgetting all the steps. Hope it helps.

This is useless. It won't respond long enough to select fast boot, let alone stay without restarting.

That's too bad. I don't know what to tell you my friend. I saw you could access the bootloader and select recovery, but if it's not stable enough to stay in fastboot, then that's beyond my knowledge capability. At this point, if it were me, I'd buy a new device or take it to a repair shop.
I'm investigating surface mount memory readers and the like.
I'm hoping to solder up something to pull the memory in binary.
The phone wasn't encrypted. There's a handful of photos I'd love to recover. Not having an external sdcard is stupid.
