THIS INFORMATION HAS BECOME OUTDATED.
There are probably newer and easier ways of accomplishing your goals that are now available. Read the entire thread for tips from other people about how to get your phone rooted - their suggestions are likely to be better options for your needs. Hi. I had trouble getting my Optimus One from Koodo Mobile rooted. So, here is some info that I hope will help others get through the process a bit faster. I mainly followed the instructions in various threads from XDA, but I needed to do things differently.
!!! REMEMBER, THIS IS INFORMATION FROM A BIT OF A NOOB. I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP.
!!! ALSO, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR ANYTHING GOOD OR BAD THAT COMES FROM APPLYING WHAT IS SAID IN THIS THREAD.
!!! THIS INFORMATION IS ONLY INTENDED FOR USE ON THE OPTIMUS ONE FROM KOODO MOBILE RUNNING FIRMWARE VERSION 10v.
It is probably not worth asking me any questions, since I barely got through the process properly myself.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Drivers
So, first I installed the LG PC Suite software because I think that gets you the USB drivers needed for this phone. I think LG calls it "Download LG Mobile Support Tool to PC" on their support site at:
http://www.lg.com/sg/support/product/support-product-profile-mobile-redux.jsp?customerModelCode=Optimus%20One%20P500&initialTab=drivers&targetPage=support-product-profile-mobile-redux
Telus 2.2 firmware version V10G_00
So, since android 2.2.1 is not rootable on Optimus One, I had to downgrade to android 2.2. I found a link to a Telus version of P500h that is android 2.2 at the following link (make sure you download the one that ends in "V10G_00.kdz"):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12253960#post12253960
Installing Telus firmware using KDZ
I followed steps #2 through #8 from the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875881
KDZ worked well, just so you know.
Rooting
Now I used "z4root" to permanently root. It was super easy (way easier than rooting my MT3G Slide). z4root is NOT in the market anymore so you need to sideload it onto your SD storage, then install it with any apk manager.
This site:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901247
led me to this site, where I downloaded z4root from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
After that, I was all rooted up... finally.
So, I obviously am NOT trying to take any credit for the real efforts made by others. I want to say thank you to all people involved with the links and programs I referred to. I really appreciate what people do for others here at XDA. My phones would not be rooted or other kinds of fun without those people.
THANKS!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a bit of a side note, you might want to unlock you phone too... so you could use it with FIDO, etc. So, I used a site called "mobileincanada". It was $20 and took less than 24 hrs to get the code. I was happy with that.
Nice write-up, I had to follow a similar path. The most trouble I had was finding a firmware that worked.. I ended up using the same TELUS firmware. It works great, much faster than the original Koodo firmware.
Sorry for my question: what is the difference between your P500h and the other P500 devices? is it a branded device with special firmware?
I thought, all P500 can be flashed with every P500 *.kdz (for country) or XDA ROMs
for P500
I wished you wrote this yesterday but thanks. I figured it out yesterday . This is the sickest 150$ phone I have ever had. I get 1100 quadrant score :O
If you want a stock, rooted 2.2.1 (Telus V10S - same as Koodo's stock V10v)
You'll need a custom recovery to flash it: [DEV] Custom Recovery P500/Thunderg

Thank you, I thought I broke the phone when I flashed V10A_00, it wouldn't boot into screen. Telus one indeed is nicer than Koodo's.

Thanks Kwen! This is very useful - now no need for the kdz updater.
Edit: or now we can keep the Koodo version of 2.2.1 and just root it using Gingerbreak (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765) - no KDZ needed, no recovery needed (prior to root). Obviously, recovery is still recommended after root.
the only question that i have is where can i GET the stock 2.2.1 for my provider? i'm with Koodo, and i live the custom roms, but i need to flash back to stock to see if i can get my mms working correctly again. and i apologize in advance if this is the wrong thread.

Thanks for your honest answer. I will keep me updated about CM for X2, and then later root when the build get's more stable.
And thank you for the links as well.
Install Superoneclick 1.7 on your PC. Connect your phone to your PC. On your phone goto System > Developer > Enable USB debugging.
On Superoneclick 1.7 click root button. Then near the end it will says 'do you want to test' click yes. Then on your phone you will have the rooted app.
root OK
superoneclick 1.7 worked well for me
rooted P990
I will take a look at Superoneclick 1.7 as well. Thanks all.
superoneclick 1.7 worked for me and my friend every time
I couldn't get z4root to work for me but SuperOneClick worked without any issues
One question from me. If i root, disables a few pre-installed apps and i.e. rename/change icons for other apps, what will happen when LG release a new update?
Can I just update as normal, and root again and do the same changes or do I have do enable all of the apps og unroot again?
I also want to install this; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027291
I'm in Mexico, and use p970h with Telcel, but at the start of the month I wasn't able to root it, and I don't know if it's rootable yet

Ok look it is exactly the same method. But you have to press the link for v20a and once you redirect in the russian forum press the link from the 1. step. Then you will be redirected to the download. Next to the 218.71 there are 2buttons. Press the left and on the next screen press the button that will appear after 5seconds. Those are the bin files you need. And then do the procedure for the v20b but instead of the bin files it says there use the bin files you downloaded.

You are not gonna be able to root if you update to mexican V20a. I tried with my countires rom. It's a no go. Individual versions for countries does not have a root method unfortunately. LG made sure of that.
But, in the first link which gsal given you see there are 3 patched ROMs. V20"a","b" and the last one is "n" (not e, it's a typo). If you want a rooted Gingerbread, you're gonna have to flash one of these. I'll say go with V20b, thats what 'm using and its good.
You could try downloading the ROM from here and using this guide to root it.
I've tryed SuperOneClick, Esteem and Gingerbreak without any luck. None of those seem to gain access to root files.
I dont want flashed ROMs, I got official 2.3.4 (V20A firmware) update and just want to get root access to fix the button lights and some other stuff.
Please Help, Thank you!
(and Yes, I searched this forum without any luck)
If you have searched and not found, it is not prompting you to think that this is not possible?
It is possible, just that he doesn't know how to search properly.
Trolling in the deep
I do think it is possible, but this firmware has been recently released so there may be less people asking about this.

You can also inject the official updater. You dont need r&d tool, just select the other process of lg updater tool. Then you get root with the same method. Or flash v10a with smartflash, root it with gingerbreak.apk and then install a custom rom. Thats probably the easiest way.

i have the same problem i update my phone with LGMobile Support Tool and now i cant root-it i try many metods super oneclic, Injecting CWM into any kdz update, Gingerbreak nothing works model version LG-P970 android 2.3.4 kernel 2.6.35 build number GRJ22 software version LG-P970-V20f can help please?

Injecting works when done right, you have to boot into recovery and flash superuser to get root.
Your next method is grab smartflash and the files provided and use that.
The answers are there, keep at it.

Make sure you have Android SDK installed and ADB drivers.
But if you have installed the LG Drivers for your phone it will work just fine.

I believe this is the only way to root successfully any new firmwares of LG. By Flashing... I guess I was just lucky in Unlock Root on my v20e.
It depend on the rom.. every version have different root strategie to be done

fls file , right ?
Or you guys have a look into my noob how to, cause there is a general way of rooting, although the unpacking is already being done automatically meanwhile by the extract program. So you only need to set up a virtual Ubuntu follow the instructions, flash it, install superuser and you have made your own custom rooted firmware.
Have fun
