Trouble Flashing Kernel - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I can't seem to get a kernel to flash. I'm running ARHD, unlocked bootloader, rooted and I have CWM recovery.
I run the installer, go through all the steps of the AROMA installer given the phone time, not rushing through, and only using the hardware buttons to prevent crashes. However after pressing the final step to start the installation the phone reboots immediately without installing the kernel. This has happened on two separate kernels, teaMSeven and ElementalX, both times after pressing the final install but in each respective AROMA installer I reboot without any changes.
I'm think I am overlooking something but I can't seem to fathom it. Any help is would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried using TWRP?

u need to have S-OFF to flash a kernel I believe...

I can assure you that S-ON or OFF has nothing to do with flashing the kernel. I'm trying to remember which recovery I used. I,think it's clockworkmod but I'll have to double check.
I'm not on that phone right now but I was able to flash a elemental x and it's a great kernel.

I've tried several kernels on my HTC One with S-On. To OP , try flashing a different recovery . Use different Kernels try Elemental X , Faux kernel etc

i've had CWM and it flashes fine. sometimes aroma does that for you. are you getting the reboot happening at the exact same time everytime? or are they different. if they are the exact sametime i'd say your recovery maybe borked or have an issue or something. if its at randoming and different times then i'd say its aroma being aroma lols. the HTC one does not need S-OFF to flash kernels just fyi

[Q] what am i doing wrong?

hey there everyone
i have s-off,bootloader unlocked, updated to hboot 1.85.2525, root enabled, usb debugging, wcx revocery
im coming from stock rogers rom. sick of waiting for ics.
but whenever i install a custom rom i get boot loops. did i miss a part? i've tried 3 or 4 of the main custom roms. all the same, stuck at boot loop or hangs there. i've done everything right from the bootloader unlocked to s-off(wire trick) then updating hboot, flashing a recovery (wcx), installing superuser
do i have to install an att or bell gingerbread ruu then update from ota? then install a custom rom? shouldn't just installing the custom rom work?
coming from a nexus one.. so much more stuff to do just for a custom rom....
I was having the same issue with my friend's Rogers HTC Raider. (When he was running the stock Gingerbread)
Last night, we put everything back to normal (Bootloader re-locked, etc.) and installed the stock Bell ICS. ( RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_BM_3.38.666.2_Radio_3.04.4740.11_34.29.701040.22_release_255916_signed )
Then did the usual procedure of unlocking bootloader, installing clockworkmod recovery, and installing a rom. The rom we did was Desensed 1.1. It booted fine and is pretty feast. Wifi isn't working on it (I think mainly because his phone is S-ON and that causes kernel issues when flashing).
I hope this helps.
S-on or s-off does not effect WiFi working or not, they are 2 different things.
If you are s-on flash boot.IMG thru fastboot, flash Rom thru recovery. Sometimes u have to reflash boot.img

No, he was right. With S-On, when you fastboot flash, modules are not usually included. Thus, when he just flashed the zip, the kernel wasn't flashed, and the ROM's modules most likely don't match.

Can't flash any kernels

Hey guys, yesterday i got my htc one and decided to root it and to install a custom rom on it. The custom rom i'm using is trickDroid.
I then saw this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255160 and wanted to flash the kernel to be able to use the htc logo.
I Tried flashing the performance zip file from cmw, it worked fine but then when i try to reboot the htc logo appears and then... nothing, the screen remains black...
I tried to flash several different other kernels after having to constantly press volume down and power button for 30 seconds and then to reflash my rom , do one boot and then go back to recovery and flash the kernel... Whenever i try to flash a new kernel it won't boot to the os anymore :/
Does anybody know why and how to fix it?
Thanks
Hi,
I presume you use the last Trickdroid rom (based on Android 4.2.2), the kernel you want to flash is for Android 4.1.2...
You can try these ones (for Android 4.2.2):
[KERNEL] [July25] ElementalX 3.4 |OC|UV|GPU OC|S2W|L2W|DT2W|L2M|THERMAL|BLN|4.2.2
[kernel][Jul21][sense4.2.2|GoogleEdn]teaMSeven2.1.5|TapWake|S2W|BLN|OTG|Hotplug|OC|UV
EDIT: I misread your post, you can't flash any kernel . Are you sure you don't try to flash a kernel for AOSP/CM rom, or another 4.1.2 kernel?
Hey, thanks for the quick reply.
Indeed it was a version problem. I would have bet i checked it many times before doing it.
Now it's working like magic. Thank you!

[Q] Flashing kernel through recovery problem

Hi.
After unlocking my HTC, installing recovery and a custom ROM (ARHD 13.3) I have a problem with flashing kernels through recovery. Every time when it starts, phone reboots into system, just after the flashing starts, withough flashing the kernel. Any ideas?
Anyone? :-\ tried reflashing Rom with full wipe, tried other roms, changed the recovery...always the same.

Sounds strange! What kernel are you trying to flash? Did you also make sure your download's MD5 is correct; could be a bad download.
Yes, md5 sum is correct. I'm trying to flash anything strange is that after full wipe and reflashing Rom I can flash anything before first boot. After first boot can't flash zip files, like Rom cleaner or kernel. Phone always reboots just after flashing starts.
Once I've found that someone had such problem and formating something through adb helped...but can't find this info again
I tried flashing almost every kernel available.

I think Rom Cleaner should be flashed before first boot anyway, but not the kernel. Are you clearing cache and dalvik before trying to flash?
Yes. I even clean cache through sdk :-\ yep, the Rom cleaner should be flashed before first boot, but anyway it shouldn't reboot even later as I think.

Weird
Just for the sake of trying, a couple of ideas:
1- wipe the cache from recovery (not fastboot) and also wipe dalvik, then immediately flash kernel
2- perhaps there's a permission issue with the zip(s) / folder(s)
EDIT: perhaps you need to update recovery?
I reflashed recovery, tried CWM, TWRP...same on both think about going back to stock with RUU, then trying everything again from the start:-\
First advance...tried.
Second...U mean fixing permissions? Don't know if it's related to that problem, but of course will try.

Though I don't think custom recovery would have issues with permissions (since it's su privilege), it could be the folder where your zip files are doesnt have rw permission, and the recovery attempts to access the folder, is unable to, and therefore just reboots.
Try putting the zip file in a different directory (or maybe even the root folder) and try again.
In root folder? Don't understand where exactly...tried to place it on different locations in storage.

Obvious question, but the kernel is for your version of Android isn't it? You're not flashing a 4.3 kernel on to 4.2.2?
of course not I'm on android 4.2.2 and flashing the 4.2.2 kernel version
---------------------------
as for now everything's ok. Frankly speaking I didn't do anything new. reflashed recovery for the third time i believe, did the full wipe also few times, flashed arhd, rom cleaner and the kernel one by one and it works...for now
---------------------------
and no..it's still the same. After first boot, I rebooted into recevery, tried to flash different zip and what....and reboot just after flashing:/ it makes me sick...:/
Thanks to one and all. I was facing the same issue of being unable to install the Bulletproof kernel on my HTC One having ViperOne 4.2.0 custom rom and TWRP 2.6.3.3 recovery.
I followed the advice here and wiped 'Dalvik cache' and 'cache' and (without rebooting) directly dirty flashed the Bulletproof kernel which did the trick.
Hope this helps someone else too.
Got the same problem. Tried with TWRP 2.6.6.3, 2.6.6.4 & actual CWM with failed tries to flash kernel, bootscreens, themes & the 360 camera fix.
Also tried to flash these recovery via fastboot and at least the m7&m7ul versions.
It happens suddenly
Btw: i'm on an tampered,unlocked hboot 1.54
Any help or ideas are much appreciated

Twrp reboots when installing kernel problem

I've tried to install 3 different kernels. I go through all the kernel options and when I hit INSTALL, the phone immediately reboots not flashing the kernel.
Tried to find on Google but not enough info.
Can anyone tell me what to do?
Thanks.
By the way. I have viperone Rom.

I don't install from pc. I was trying to install directly from the phone.
Should i do it from pc? I was trying from phone cuz it's more convinient.
This was the steps.
In Twrp, wipe cache and davlik. Next I go to install and flash the kernel. I choose all the kernel options and hit install. Right away the phone reboots. Without installing.
Is this some known issue?

This guy had the same problem, don't know if he ever got it solved:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2423817
I have the same problem all of a sudden. Never seen this before. I have flashed multiple Roms and kernels in the last several days with no issues.
I just flashed ARHD 13.4, let it boot and set it up. I then booted to recovery and tried to flash Bulletproof 4.4 and the Aroma installer works fine until I hit install. I see it starts to install but then it reboots into safe mode.
I have re-downloaded and no luck. Not sure what's going on. I'm gonna keep testing stuff.
ARHD 13.4
TWRP 2.6.1.0
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Update: I flashed back to a 4.3 GE ROM and Bulletproof 5.3 flashed fine. I wonder if this is just an Aroma installer problem...
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I solved my problem by reflashing the rom.
But this time i made sure to have taskmanager or task. (dont recall exact name) installed so i wouldnt have the "sync is having problems right now. It will be back shortly"
So not sure if that also affects in something.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I think its Aroma installer problems. I flashed ARHD 13.4 again and had no problem flashing Bulletproof 4.4 this time. Aroma was updated recently I think, might be a new bug since the problem only happens in recovery and its only started happening recently. Can't be ROM or kernel related.
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Also here with two HTC One's, reboots on start flashing.
TWRP 2.6.x.0 (tried 2.6.1.0 & 2.6.3.0).
Flashing Viper Kernel (Stock Kernel) works.
'fastboot erase cache' & 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' (custom kernel, boot loop) doesn't help.
I think dirty flash the ViperOne 2.6.0 and then flash custom Kernel works.
One thing, has a working ViperOne Rom with stock kernel (2.5.0, 2.6.0), flash in recovery a custom kernel (bullet, faux123, etc) and it works. Then flash stock kernel, works. Boots fine. And now starts the problem. Reboot in recovery to flash custom kernel and nothing works with custom kernel flash. Only back to stock Kernel work (flash kernel zip or dirty flash ViperOne Rom).
I have the same problem running CWM and ARHD 21.0. Tried reflashing, wiping, other kernels, no luck.
Possible solution from here:
Enter TWRP, connect with "adb shell" and write this:
Code:
e2fsck -fv /dev/block/mmcblk0p35
"It will fix system partition errors if there are any. This was the problem for me. Any attempt to write to corrupted sectors was causing reboot."
* Send with much love & Android. * ( HTC One )
I had the same issue about 2 weeks ago on ARHD 22. I was on stock rom before that and could flash Bulletproof and TeamSeven kernels just fine. In ARHD22 whenever i tried to flash a kernel with Aroma installer it immedately rebooted my phone.
I tried wiping all sorts of cache-s and factory reset but nothing worked.
What worked for me which i discovered by pure accident was that i did a nandroid backup of my ARHD22 setup and restored it. To my suprise after that i could flash again any kernel with Aroma installer just fine.
So if nothing mentioned here works for you give this method a try and maybe it will work for you too.
Btw i have latest TRWP installed.

If u are S-ON u have to flash the kernel Manually from fastboot......
Did u do that last time........?????
You do NOT need to be S-off, and there is absolutely no need to flash the boot.img or kernel separately. But Unlocked is necessary, also latest TWRP recovery is required.
As always, do a Nandroid of your current ROM.
GPE is a different matter, though. I am not familiar with GPE ROMs as I never tried them. The One with Sense is too good to miss! But not relevant as both ROMs you mentioned are Sense ROMs!

Because the recovery was not yet adjusted.
You should do regularly a Nandroid...it is easy enough, and keep it on the internal storage.
For now, flash the latest TWRP recovery in fastboot mode, then flash any Sense ROM, and boot up first into it to check that all is good., then do another Nandroid of the now successfully booted Sense ROM. (OTG cable and USB drive come in handy here as you can Nandroid directly to external storage, or to have a collection of different Nandroids to free up internal storage space, as well as added security as you can always flash also a ROM from USB drive should things go wrong!)
After that you can try different kernels if you must.
I am running InsertCoin 7.0.5 with ElemntalX 10.4 for several weeks now and this combination has fantastic battery performance as well as it is totally stable!
