High Data Usage - Android OS - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently have a 3GB data plan with AT&T and have been charged an extra 2 GBs so far for excess usage. I stream music like no ones business and stream at high quality and watch YouTube at high quality, so I can account for that. What I don't get is what the hell Android OS is doing eating up so much data, see screenshot. This is only two days worth of use, I click into it and can't get any other details.
Anyone have a clue?

Syncing, browser syncing, Google photo syncing and most importantly if you have phone backup turned on, it increases data usage. Disable that first and see how things change.

I had instant upload on but only when on wi-fi, I did have an HTC backup account registered but I had sync-off. I just now disabled my Google account backup, this is all I can think of other than email but that would show up as a mail app and not Android OS. It's weird, I've set up my previous Android phones just the same and I've never had this kind of problem before.

It is mostly google backup that tends to eat data with my phones. More so since ICS and JB. It is different for different people but it is general trend. This is the reason I prefer doing manual titanium backup every week instead of google backup.

Thanks for the tip, I'll leave Google backup disabled for a few days and report back with an update.

Prefer TiBackup to Google Backup... what? Does google back up even back up anything? As far as I can tell it backs up your WiFi settings only. What is Google Backup actually supposed to do?

It does nothing. It just backs up the market links. But even that for some reason eats up lot of data. Mine eats anything upto 50mb per day if I have google backup enabled. Turn that off and Android OS uses less than 15mb in a day.

It backs up some of your settings such as wifi passwords, your wallpaper, and a few other bits and pieces.

I'm currently at 318 MBs since yesterday. Something is still eating away at this thing and it's driving me nuts. I do notice a sync icon showing up every now and then in the notification bar. I don't know what else to remove... Email?

There must be a better Data-Monitor than the built-in.... get an App for that.

I think so too. I've tried two different ones but they both just say "Android OS". Anyone know of a good data monitor that can drill down further?

I honestly don't remember what I was using. I'm currently on Android Revolution HD 20.1
Hope that helps.

Solved (Temporarily)
Found out that the issue is not persisting on nexus 4 and only in nexus 5. (Thats very strange.)
Temporary Solution until Google fixes this. Just root your phone and freeze Android System Update.
That will fix the mysterious data consumption issue.

I have a friend using Nexus 4 and he too has started facing the issue since 4.4.3 upgrade.
It cannot be completely solved but can control it so some extent.
Try flashing different kernels and see which one uses less data.
Or if that doesn't work, Root and intall Bloat free, Titanium Backup or any such apps and freeze Update Service, lge.com.update.
After these changes I've seen only 1-3mb of data being used per day by Android OS.

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.
Hope this helps, Press THANKS if it did help you

Downloaded and installed this app, applied some of the tweaks (3g boost, battery save, etc), just some of the general tweaks and when everything applied successfully, I lost 3g and now I'm constantly in 'roaming' Any idea why?

That happened to me too. And removing all the tweaks didn't help either. So i did another clean install, tried again and same thing. Was in roaming. So i did yet another clean install and didn't tweak 3G or WiFi and it was fine after.

Only thing I had issues with is applying the 3g tweaks. After the reboot my 3g was game and I had a "R" above my bars and the remove tweak option didn't fix it. Had to reflash to fix it.

most "performance apps" just add things to build.prop, system/etc/init.d/****, or just mass-force-stop apps that just restart due to programming, most things apps liek those, and pimp-my-rom do can be done by the user, they just make it easier with a snappy UI for the
uneducated root-user" with no offence to any lol, even before i built my rom, and some apps, ive done more then the tweaks for stability that these aps do since i was brought up with linux, mid-early-to-newer windows(95-7), and have been observing codes since i was 7 (and im currently 18 as of now), so if u look at different Tutorials for linux-distros, and compare to Android alot are basicly the same as android is based of linux, just some terminal commands are different, and we use superuser/Super SU, to do root-commands like linux's sudo, but not all codes can give 100% positives for all things, or even 100% false (unless it was just a scam paid app that gives random official apps like facebook, gmail, google play store once, a false positive; most newer "official security apps", arent really coded to do as they say they do, some look at their permissions and if say "android.permissions.ACCESS_SUPERUSER" is one, it counts it as generic malware, because it reads its a root-capable app, even if its just a blank package with only permissions, no images, no operation codes "src/", just a blank package with no XML's but Androidmaniefest.xml for permisssions+package name/versions lol i always hated when people use the common day paranoia of viruses now a days, but linux-based devices are least likely to get viruses, as androids newer versions have bug-fixes, securities, and detections, +most of the apps that ARE malware need root, that the common user doesnt know what it is lol, i bet u if u have with people who ARE NOT developers, and just use it for games+phone/texting if u ask them if their phones rooted, ask what their operating software for their computer is, or even what android:IOS(apple) version are u on, the most common answers ive been given here in Parkersburg, are(in question order):
-whats rooted?
-umm, idk what that is, i was told it was a windows 8 computeror has a windows 8 sticker)?... idk
-?...?....what?...
so most average-day people arent educated on the true purpose androids can give u when a Root-User(SU) since its almost FULL Linux!, like pin-testing software or networks, computer network analysis, Syncing files, Virtual Distribution Testing, OTA USB Triggers to reprogram Computers OS On-Computer-Boot, Reverse tracking Locations/Numbers, Re-Routing where people can Ping you on windows/linux/Mas OS to ANY location path (fun when i have people do it and it makes it look like in in the United States FSA Headquarters, Google Headquarters, then to the NASA Building), Nintendo Zone Hotspot for free special Gold-Bottomed mii's if u cant goto a official Zone, MAC-Address spoofing on-boot, FULL VPN-Capabilities not just location+site unblocking, DNS Location Changing(so any website sees u dont exist/different Global location/Full Network Privlages, even adding more things then BusyBox could ever do! and more then 99% of people dont know that the $100+
USD Device they have in their hands can do more things then an average Super Computer of the mid-to-late 2000s sometimes even better then super computers today even, just not as fast as the super computers ive messed with had 12*16GB Ram-sticks and a 200GB Swap backup XD
u think high-speed internets fast sometimes, u try downloading 5TB(1024GB*5) of files in under 2 mins with DSL connections XDD, so basicly what im trying to say is that not all apps are what they say to be, some work, some dont, some are just scams for a quick buck to do something that will just make it worse, or somethign u have to test longer then the Google Play's 15Min refund period that if its past that, they dont have to give refunds lol

btw... why are u flashing roms on a Note2 if this specific forum is for the Samsung Fascinate SCH-I500 (fascinatemtd code_name)? if u flash roms in this forum no1 is paying u for a bricked device u didnt read the disclaimer from the rom-developer is its for a FASCINATE, but we are a friendly forum where critisism is to be done lightly, and family-friendly, Root-Apps always have the default disclaimer whether posted or not of
"USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!, Not all tweaks/mods/features are meant for EVERY DEVICE, there is over thousands of device models and cannot be tested on all, MAKE BACKUPS, AS I AM NOT RESPONCABLE IF U BRICK YOUR DEVICE FOR NOT FOLLOWING THIS DISCLAIMER!"
as rooting your device/Flashign a rooted rom is a "USER ACTION", meaning u made the choice to do it, so nobody else is responcible for the damages cause when u voided your warrenty due to user modifications if u arent using a "DEVELOPER_EDITION", like i use, all-in-all user modifications whether its Hardware, Software, Add-Ons, or even accidentials, its still done by user actions, and nobody else is responcible for refurbishing, remanufacturing, or repairs if done by the owner of the device itself, with or without approval of others
*Edit#1*if u really want me to prove it to you, u can post the APK file u installed, as i can run whats called a Signature_test, and compare the sizes, MD5-Hash, and everything u might need to see if its the official Pimp-My-Rom App, and not a Uuser-Modded version of the open-sourced app as it is

DISCLAIMER AS PER USUAL: YOU DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Oki doki. Time to come out in the open
Prelude. I was hard pressed to get 4h screen on time in 10-12h off charger. Then i screwed something up (irrelevant ) and had to reflash stock images.
Now my next findings are sure to attract so flaming from more experienced users that will say "it's placebo", "it doesn't work like that" etc. While I don't have screenies to confirm pre flash stats, i have gathered a few post flash stats. Here we go.
Some cycles are missing, since i either accidently deleted screenies or forgot to take them. But that should give you a general idea. WiFi used mainly, apart from last cycle, where 12 were on data only and the rest was while connected to wifi and reading a book in fbreader.

And this is ROM/KERNEL i used before and after flashing images. Note, kernel has been updates since, but it didn't make much difference.
So for me it's fairly conclusive, reflashing stock images has GREATLY improved my battery life. I had a few chats and we came to a conclusion that it is possible that at the factory device has simply not been flashed "properly", mass flashing differs from your usual .img flashing normally.
What you think...Well, it's up to you for decide. I know few more people who've done the same, and while their improvement is not as drastic as mine, it is still an improvement.
Please vote AFTER you try it, and after min of 2 cycles.

Simply follow this great guide by efrant. Keep in mind it will wipe your storage, so backup all the pics and other stuff.
Before you do it, take below quote into consideration if you use google wallet.

efrants guide
People who are more experienced will know how to cut corners If you don't know what you are doing, I suggest you follow efrants guide to the letter. This way you'll learn a fair bit too.
Same process for every images version. Also, I ALWAYS do it for any images update, since I'm not a believer in patching. I might be wrong, but hey, it works for me. So my personal recomendation would be to redo this after every new OTA.
So:
1. Backup your "SD" contents.
2. Flash ALL stock images as per efrants guide (or any other way if you know how to)
3. You are most likely to get stuck on boot. Hold power button, shut down, reboot into recovery. Once you see broken droid hold power button and tap +vol. Once in recovery do factory reset. If you don't get stuck on boot, still do it.
4. Boot on stock. It's a good idea to transfer your rom and kernel onto sd now since you can't mount sd in recovery.
5. Reboot into bootloader and proceed to push recovery and then flash your previous setup (ROM/KERNEL)/
How to push recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-image-name.img

All on auto, the only two things i have disabled is gnow and location reporting (which is primarily used for gnow anyway) and had that disabled from day one. The rest of the settings are irrelevant, since they are the same from before i reflashed stock.
Interesting, be good to see what others report.
If i hear a few good reports, i might take the plunge next week.
Edit: might just be Rasbean jelly giving you good battery life!

Re: [BATTERY IMPROVEMENT] Works 100% so far.
The thing that's helping battery life here isn't the reflash, it's the factory reset that happened when you did it.

I would tend to agree. But which would be the cause, removed culprit user installed app(s) or something not set as intended from factory as a result of mass flash/ reset etc at factory? Or both?
Maybe even a difference between OTA updating new units after setup or before?
Would be easy to test the theory by just doing a factory reset without re-flashing and see if it makes a difference.

I did think of that. Thing is flashing ROM fresh IS factory reset. Factory reset doesn't do more than delete all the data and maybe reflash /system. So i disagree with you here Rusty. Think about it. I took my time to carefully evaluate changes, and you might know from my time in Sensation forum that I do look into things before posting it.

See above.
Also, apps have nothing to do with it, since my (and other people) setup is identical to what it was before doing that.
And thanks to the person voting NO. I guess following simple request is too difficult.
If you guys are sceptical, do it before you do next fresh install since you don't lose anything and report back.

I can vouch for this experiment that we somehow agreed to without even hesitating lol.
Personally, i manually installed EVERYTHING. no nandroid or titanium back up. Before i would get roughly 9hr phone usage with 2.5-3 hrs battery. After going through this i now get 13-14hrs phone usage with 4-4.5 screen on. I know that's normal for some but compared to what i had before, is an improvement. This was just in the first cycle. I'm on my second and wool report back when I'm done

Not sure. But someone already had very decent battery life and extended it by another 0.5-1h screen on. I guess you wouldn't lose anything if you tried. Just a half an hour of setting things up.

+1 I've seen their posts.
Make a nandroid. You have nothing to lose but time. It's the weekend anyway.
Dont want to say anything but on screenshoots there is practically no apps other than browser or taptalk, play a game, watch a clip on YT, listen to some music ohh and switch off WiFi. Phone is to be used outside where you dont have a WiFi, At home I have my Laptop that is far much better than than a phone to read stuff, and XBox that is far much better for gaming....
I could probably pull 8h screen if I switch everything off sans WiFi and just have web browser opened on one page.
Ohh And I'm on stock since day 1 + had to reflash image due to kernel net being compatibile with screen sensitivity driver .... No changes, What you have on images wont repeat itself outdoors.
Look at that screen where you dont have WiFi on. Your usage dropped by 8hrs screen time by 1hr and still no phonecalls, txt, nothing really.... just chrome
I get 3hrs 30min screen + 17hrs usage with music in bacground, quick game + and reading, no reception for about 8hrs or if there is any its 1bar....(and that drains the battery)

Ok. I think I have to explain something. This is absolutely not about how or what for phone is used. I used it in the same way before I flashed images.
Concentrate on the MAIN thing. Same usage, same rom and kernel, same settings, same apps. The only difference is battery life after flashing stock images files. Immediately.

I am loosing my mind! Note eating battery and superslow

Hi!
My Note has for a quite long time now been slow, laggy and eating battery.
Didn't mind, had a car charger, suspected old battery and clogged storage.
About a week ago it came to a complete stop, taking 30 sec to open facebook.
And typing in Swiftkey an impossibillity, having keystrokes on a 5-10sec lag.
So finally i got a new battery, whiped the phone clean.
Flashed the phone with a fresh rom (Team Union JB XXLT4 V7)
Installed my apps manually, making shure no crap cache was brought.
Formatted internal storage and got a new 32Gb SanDisk Ultra card.
Fresh start, fast phone right? no.
Apps still unusably slow, typing on swiftkey impossible without lagging.
Battery from a full charge last about 6h with light usage.
Would like to stay on TW only for the MHL capability, but now i am open to anything.
Can't really afford a new phone, so if this can't get resolved ill switch to my old 3GS.
What do i do now?
What can i try?

Just listened to som music, and some light surfing, thats about all. Battery blames is all on the screen and os about 33% & 33%.
YOu should try AOSP/AOKP Roms!!!
I think one of the apps you have is causing the problem.
When i had the same problem it turned out to be the podcasting app i had.

Or go to the terminal and run top, see whats eating the cpu.

Well, yeah couldn't find any original though, and don't want to wait weeks for a shipment, so got a copy brand "ENERGY" spacy logo and made here in Thailand. Only 2350mAh compared to the original 2500mAh.
Found that the new battery didn't really make any difference, about the same.
So worried i got new but crappy battery I'm now back on original, without any noticable change.
Considering getting a external charger and carrying the spare battery, that is not really a solution either.
Got get this phone working reliably soon, or i need to find a replacement.
Appreciate the tips, and ill try and make a study with "top" and get back to you guys.
Maybe i have a energy hog after all...
It's a pain in the butt, but it looks like the only way to resolve it is to do a clean wipe, then install each
app one by one, giving yourself a day or two of usage. Sucks, but it sure sounds like one app is
screwing up another one. Any chance you can (shudder) use a "memory cleaner/program closer"
after you use each app, to make sure it's closed as a test? Sounds like something sure is
interacting with something else.
USe Greenify and hibernate all apps!!!
Check your Google account settings. If you have sync Internet ticked disable it.

Really?
I thought my battery life was bad. 7h15m with 45 min screen time after charging my battery is at 67%
That is with wifi and bluetooth (with music playing) on and connected.
GPU overclocked and lowest step 200mhz(from 133 and max 400) and cpu up to 1550 Mhz.(okay, i did reduce the voltages, sue me)
and google location service on.
On original battery (dec 2011), that is about to die (screen starts glitching around 30%)
Somehow you are doing it wrong.
You would be surprised at what a speed deference you will get and battery life with aosp roms I have used tw and aosp and always go back to aosp based when tw starts to get laggy. But as most have said most likely a app causing your problem you should try install new Rom with all wipes inclueding preload I think thats what its called and make sure that media scan is not always running

Just an update everyone:
I'm currently at 7h15m with 2 hours screentime.

I will have to chalk this up to a worn battery being replaced by a real Samsung battery and not a knockoff 3rd party battery.

How about reading the first post AndroidSlave?
What's this snarkyness that's infected xda?
Shure wasn't around back in the WM days.
This is and or was a very "General" issue with my phone, as i am still not entierely shure is a plain software issue.
However i've made the switch to a or the PA-rom out of desperation.
Still too early too tell, as it is first day after flash, but feels smoother.
What is driving me mad on PA is the lack of lockscreen-homebutton-torch.
Also a bit dissapointed in "Screen Mode" dynamic mode missing.
Missning SPen->screenshot->notetaking is bugging me aswell, but i'm shure ill find some replacement thing for that.
EDIT:
You, know what.
I apoligise if i posted this in the wrong place.
And no bad intentions towards you AndroidSlave.
I just feel that it's the place of a MOD and not of a user to make these claims.
Please just use the report button in if you feel like this, instead of posting a retorical question.

Um.. bought a second hand unit, i think i need help.

Hi guys of xda!! I am jumping off from Symbian OS to Android! Bought myself a second-hand One for 300$ and I love the build quality, Boom Sound and all that!
However, it appears that I have been somewhat cheated by the previous owner, he's told me that it has a remainder of 3 month warranty left with HTC, but it expires next month. :X So I kinda have to look around my phone to see if there are any issues that I can highlight on when I send it (please do tell me if the problems I am about to mention are worth sending to HTC and leave me without a working phone for weeks)
Current issues I am encountering are:
1) It LAGS when playing games, watching Youtube and using the Facebook app, I am unsure if this is normal, but from what I see on the reviews, it should be close to buttery smooth, right? Come on, I didn't think the frame rate would drop to (roughly 20 fps?) on Jetpack Joyride! It just keeps stuttering! D:
2) I have triple checked with the previous owner on the rear camera issue on whether it'd have the tint problems, he had informed me that he had already gotten it fixed, which I believe it is. HOWEVER it did not occur to me to check the front-facing camera.. here's how the front-facing camera looks like (please forgive me if I am violating any image size limit on this forums. :\).

It is WAY worse in lower-light, really, really RED. Tried Googling about, not much complaints on the red tint on the FRONT camera, should I get it fixed with HTC? Tried fiddling with the settings, doesn't change much, red tints are still present, is that normal?
3) Err, don't think there's any more other than the issues highlighted above, could you please suggest me to check on any common issues that I might have left out? So that I may request for a warranty-covered repair.
P/S: The lags and red tints are present no matter the phone's temperature, I've tried it in both coldness and warmth.
I have not attempted on rooting the phone or anything at all, here are the versions:
Android 4.4.2
HTC Sense 5.5
Software Number 4.20.707.6
HTC SDK API level 5.69
Kernel Ver. 3.4.10-g499e571
[email protected] #1 (uhhh HELP! is this phone rooted? Because I see the word root in the kernel! Just noticed this omgomg)

Also to note: When I booted this phone for the first time, there was a welcome page to set up and things, and the camera image count was from 0001, but it came with an extra app called Wechat (it's a popular Whatsapp alternative here in Malaysia) I am unsure if the phone has been factory reset before it was handed to me, because if it was, I don't think resetting it again would help much, right?
Thank you so much for your time! Would really appreciate any help I could get!
You can try to factory reset the phone and see if the lag is still there. Both my htc ones have red front camera in low light. You can't tell if your phone is rooted that way. My phone is also not rooted and shows [email protected] Check if there is supersu app installed, if there is that means its rooted

hello snoopy! May I ask if there is a way for me to backup my apps and settings into my laptop before I attempt a factory reset? Would HTC Sync be enough? I do not see any supersu app installed. Thank you!

Use HTC Backup. Just do a backup before you factory reset, then when you're setting up the phone again, just choose the "restore from a backup" instead of starting fresh.
The red tint issue is just really random and you either have it or not. There really is nothing you can do about it other than talk with HTC and get a replacement.

sorry, i think this is a stupid question, but wouldn't changing ROM be considered as rooting? or requiring a root? That would ultimately void the warranty right?

That's a tricky question. If your phone has a hardware defect, I don't think HTC can legally get out of honoring the warranty (but I'm not sure). The problem is, if you've rooted, it will be much harder for you to argue that it definitely is a hardware defect. I would have it serviced if you can get warranty service. And BTW, on my phone (rooted, custom ROM), Jetpack Joyride has occasional frames of lag (mostly in the beginning of the level), but gameplay seems smooth after that.

Crazy battery drain when Idle

Hey guys, I am having issues with battery drain and not sure what to do, my note wil lose about 30% battery overnight(about 7-8 hours) and last night it lost about 50%
At first it said that google app used alot of battery so I disabled the reccomanded things online(it's location and such), now it isn't draining as much.
Also my location doesn't use GPS, at night I always have maximum reception and yet I lose alot of battery to cell reception, also the other 2 you can see in the picture.
Hope someone can help, and thank you!

Factory reset only helped me for a couple days. Just the other day I lost almost 75% overnight with minimal apps installed and debloated. I've tried many combinations of WiFi on/off, HD/WiFi calling on/off, but the drain always comes back. Factory stats and gsam don't show anything out of the ordinary. It's been like this since Marshmallow.

Nope, all packages enabled before accepting the MM update. I forgot to enable them for this last small OTA just the other day, but I haven't noticed a change.
That's surprising. I've had better standby after mm. Hardly 3% in an 8 hour night. 5.5 hours consistent screen on with relatively heavy usage.

I have the impression that completely stopping Location services makes a difference, inclusive this option to Scan wifi.
I now have, on idle(!) 2.1 % per hr loss. Sync still on and also Wifi. But no automatic updates.

Correct, I forgot to enable the disabled packages for the latest OTA from Verizon. Everything went fine, as far as I can tell, but it wasn't a "major" update (still 6.0.1, no version change/update), just a few bug fixes.

Yeah. On lp it was an easy ten percent + every night. I think the combination of package disabler and the dose on mm got something right going on.

Hi guys, i'm actually from over on the s6 edge plus part of xda and a lot of us are having the same issue with idle battery drain
I fixed this on my s6 edge plus by installing greenify and activating aggressive doze. It's by no means a permanent fix but it does the job. Since the note 5 is like the s6 edge plus's brother in terms of hardware and similar software give this a go and let me know if it helps
