Just flashed Pacman, and it lags like crazy. Unless I can get ahold of that lagfix zip that everyone's talking about, I will flash to Clean Rom. I've looked for good instructions on how to flash the stock kernel, but can't find any. How would I do this?

I'm currently running the ROM & kernel you see in my signature.
Obviously I've already got the FroYo radio, and the kernel mentioned... do I have to get rid of those to use a different ROM? If I want to switch to a different ROM (just to play around) do I just flash it? What, exactly, do I have to wipe before doing so?
Just rooted a few days ago for the first time, and though I'm getting the hang of it, I sill have much to learn.
I was hoping to flash Paragon tonight, but it said to flash to stock first and I had a few questions.
Why do some ROMs have you flash to stock while others you can just flash through ROM Manager?
Is the Stock backup I made through ROM Manager sufficient as a subsitute for an Odin flash?
If not, are there any Mac alternatives out there?
I'm trying to get a good understanding of what I'm tooling around with so I don't brick my phone.
Thanks for the answers
I wish I could answer all your questions, I'm guessing it's because the recovery uses a zip file and it does not update everything that odin would. Anyways, if you need any help flashing to stock I know that the FAQ page of the cognition rom found here has directions.

It is not needed but many think it is best. Depending on the rom you are on you have a cocktail of lag fixes and kernels. Flashing stock gives a clear slate.
You can disable lag fix, delete davlik cache, clear cache. You should be fine but you may run into issues. May.
What are you running?
It's some sort of ancient lore past down from priests of captivate forum antiquity.
As for 'cocktails of lag fixes and kernels,' there is no reason your cwm install can't format those partitions, particularly in light of the fact that it has built-in support for ext4. I don't know why people think the stock flash functions are particularly better at dealing with it.
Do yourself a favor, make sure you have a working download mode combo, purge your mind of the flash to stock FUD and obliviously commence to flashing one froyo ROM right over another. You'll be glad you did.
So if I'm hearing you correctly, it's more of a this will make sure you have no issues and are starting from a clean slate. It's not 100% neccessary to flash to stock before flashing a new rom?
Meanwhile, I was furiously trying to get Odin to work on an old laptop I scrounged up to no avail. Sometimes my need to tinker creates so many problems.
Thanks, guys!

It is like a default disclaimer to flash stock. If you flash the rom and have an issue, one if the first things they will ask is did you flash stock. As mentioned almost all lag fixes use some form of ext 4 filing and most clockwork recoveries can now handle ext 4.
So in summation you do not need to, if you flash and get stuck in a boot loop you need to. I would make sure you can get odin up and running, and recognizing your phone in either case just so you know you can use it if needed
Absolutely no need at all to flash to stock
Would you install Vista in order to install Win7?
As long as you format everything in CWM before you flash a new ROM, then everything is a clean slate. It'll wipe your stock install, so why install stock first?
This and the 're-calibrating' your battery are the two biggest FUDs about Android.
Hi, I have ran into a small problem that might be solved with me flashing a custom rom, but I don't really want to do that. I have searched and didn't find anything, so here we go. I was recently on BeatMod GB and I enjoyed it for a while but from my experience in terms of what I am looking for, the stock 1.6 rom beats all I have used. What I want to do is be able to keep the custom recovery image that I have flashed numerous times without it going back to the stock recovery and I'm afraid to flash kernels because of the same situation. It is rooted as I have superuser and setcpu and both are functional so I know its rooted but nothing else I do seems to want to stay. Is there anything besides flashing a custom rom that I can do? Heh, this is to ultimately overclock my phone to 700mhz and hopefully play angry birds without lag. All the other roms won't run angry birds from what i have experienced..... unless I did something wrong haha. Thanks in advance for your help
I looked around a bit more and found that if I used a "defanged" base then all the stuff that is flashed won't revert back to stock, but will this work if I use the stock 1.6 rom? Thanks again for help.
edit: Alright, I think that I have everything under control now, I used the defanged base and Amon RA's recovery is still there along with root and all of that.... So I have just one more question, hopefully someone can answer this one :] is there a kernel I can flash for overclock for stock 1.6? I cannot find one that I think would work... Thanks for the help :]
I was wondering the same thing. :3
I have a friend that want's to flash a custom ROM to his captivate. He has it rooted but hasn't done anything else.
I said I would install CM7 or something on it for him. I had a Droid and Droid2 and am now on a Thunderbolt. So rooting and flashing ROMs aren't new to me. But, as with all three of my phones, things are a little different on the Captivate.
I see there's this Odin thing and I think no permanent clockwork recovery? How do you install ROMs on the Captivate? I see there's a new CW that doesn't need what ever Odin is. He's on the stock kernel and everything. So do I just boot into recovery and flash the clockwork update.zip and then flash normally through CW?
Also, being as he doesn't know how to do any of this, which is the most stable and bugless ROM that everyone uses. He won't know how to flash something else, so I need something that is as close to 100% as possible, speedy, and close to, if not ASOP.
Thanks
Hello,
Please post in Q/A as this is not a development topic. Suggest mod move the post.
I suggest that your buddy do some reading. Are you going to be there to hold his hand every day if something goes wrong with his flash? Tell him to educate himself. And if flashing is not new to you and your 3 phones, you should know what section a question like this goes in, is it "android development" related?

Most stable rom I have ever used is firefly 3.0. But your friend should see u do it and at least know how u did it to his phone. And yes from stock just do the clockwork mod update.zip and then flash through clockwork mod, there is a little more involved in flashing cm7 and it is not the most stable rom anyways. Good luck and I hope u take my advice on firefly you won't be dissapionted
The flashing procedure will vary depending on what ROM you want to run.
CM7/MIUI have their own set of procedures.
Flashing a Froyo based ROM you'll have to flash CWM 2.X then the ROM
Flashing a Gingerbread based ROM you'll have to flash the updated Gingerbread bootloaders first via Odin then flash the Kernel or CWM 3.X or higher, then the ROM.
Post in question section plz
I advice you to start flashing a not complicated rom (2.2) , once you get the hang of it then you go advance.
Moved to proper forum.
Odin is a program that is ran in the computer to flash a rom, bootloaders, and kernel at once. For it to work your phone has to be in download mode. Clockwork works with rom manager in the app store, some roms have it in the kernal.
Sorry, the forums I used before all root related things, including questions, went in the Root section. I thought Q&A was for non-root/development questions.
Thanks a lot Dustin, Kyuta, and bassplayer for the information.
I am going to show him how to do it. But I'm not going to hold his hand every time. That's why I wanted something stable where he wouldn't have to flash something else to get functionality that was missing.
Hey guys:
Ive been doing heaps of reading, and I just want to make sure I have something correct before I go much further.
Im flashing Kings from Paranoid.
From what I understand, certain ICS kernels are no good. So flashing Abyss will ALWAYS make it safe to flash a new, safer kernel, correct? And thats why they recommend doing all of the wipes in Abyss?
The thing that trips me up is Ive heard people say its even safer to go back to GB, but I dont understand why: If the infected kernel is completely gone, it shouldnt matter which Android version, right?
I know Im asking a lot of questions, but I really want to be on the other side of this, being able to help newer people eventually.
Short answer.
If u planning from ics rom go to based cm9 rom, always back to gb and root it then flash thru recovery mode.
If u planning from ics go to ics custom based rom, u cn flash abyss 4.2 kernel, completely reboot into abbyss recovery(touch mode) do full wipe and install your prefer ics custom rom.
For myself, no matter which rom I go, I'm sure will go back gb thru pc odin. Cz I'm prefer clean install. Although the step and time involved will be more and long, But that was the safer way to flashing new rom.
I'm sure you don't want your lovely g.note get hardbrick right?
A lot of flasher able and success without any prob do full wipe with speedmod , cfhain and franco kernel. But this granted for nothing.
Good luck mate.

Oh cool.
Yeah, one of the things that makes this difficult is that people say 'it worked for me' but I know the chance of an emmc brick is quite low.. so what works for 20 people might not necessarily be safe.
But thanks lee yun khong, Ill just bite the bullet and start flashing the prerooted GB rom before I do anything from now on.
