Good evening,
This isn't really a huge deal but I do want to get to the bottom of this.
Does both Z and ZL have OptiContrast Panel? I've checked both white papers and theres only ONE line that mentions it:
The OptiContrast™ panel makes the phone seamlessly, strikingly black when turned off.
Click to collapse
like what is that even supposed to mean? I thought OptiContrast was supposed to be better? Explanation of OptiContrast Panel
anyway so I went to dig deeper. I've used to own 2 ZLs C6506 and 1 Z C6602, currently with C6603.
Both Zs (C6602/3) back of the box clearly states "OptiContrast Panel"
whereas,
if i do recall clearly, both ZLs (C6506) has nothing mentioned on the back of the box.
SSs below, the two without it are ZLs and the one with it is Z, as you can see the water drop picture on the side stating that its water resistant.
1) Does Z and ZL even have OptiContrast Panel? or does it mean something else for Xperia line?
2) Is OptiContrast Panel limited to only Sony TVs? or is Sony throwing us off, part of marketing scam?
Going by the description you posted for the term, I'm pretty sure it just refers to the bezel around the display.
On the Xperia Z regardless of colour choice, when the display is off the entire front glass is black.
On the Xperia ZL the bezel is the colour of the rest of the phone. So you don't get one black sheet of glass when off.
Just compare the white version of each and you will see what I mean.

ahhh that would make a bit more sense, but its really a shame that they cant bring the tech to the phones. Sony couldve thought of a better name for this rather than using "OptiContrast" Panel -.-
all just seems like a marketing scam sigh

I do know there are many debates around the Web about whether to use mobile protective or not.
Personally I love my TX without case.
What do you guys think about xperia's build design when it comes to drop resistant and the quality.
I apologize if this thread should have been posted under Q&A thread. Please move if need to be.

I have a T, not a TX, and I don't use any kind of case. I don't like phone cases as a general rule.
I'm usually careful with my devices, so I've never needed one (touching wood...).
The T (and I suppose the TX) seem pretty solid; mine is 5 months old and looks like new.

I am using a case currently. It makes my T look less sexy because now it looks fat and has no curves (much like a fat lady ). But yeah I dropped my phone from below chest height back-first onto a tiled floor and nothing happened. Soo build quality should be good.
I just bought a new Xperia z, few hours later my kid scratched it.. He never told me until I found the scratch... What a waste.... Is it a bad screen...??? Never found scratchesin my Lumia 920!!!!

The Xperia Z has many features, this is one of them:
The Xperia Z features tempered glass and anti-shatter film on the front and back, and high levels of dust and water resistance.

Your son scratched a plastic surface.
Take it off, buy a screen protector, and replace.
The xperia z has a glued on anti shatter film that you can remove and replace with any screen protector of your choice. The only downside is that you lose the Sony logo
Press thanks if I have helped

Yeah it's only the anti shatter film. But if you do remove it you will loose the Sony logo. Some people find that a plus. Also some reporting more responsive screen.

Why the Sony logo does not come pressed on the screen but in the film?
Screen Technology?

This. This is my guess. Sony doesn't have a history of cheating so I doubt that's the reason now.

In another forum, a guy said he was part of screen technology, which because it is thin, it would be impossible to press the Sony logo.
He had posted a picture explaining!
Yeah really hate the fact the Sony logo is pressed on the film. It's the only reason why I haven't removed mine. I have a hard enough time already telling which way is the right way up. Just hope we don't see another omnibalace design from Sony. The bottom bezel looks much bigger than it should be.
I prefer on screen buttons but I thought that was meant to help reduce the chassis. Maybe Sony was absent at that meeting because the Z is certainly taller than it needs to be.

If you look closer, you'll notice it has symmetrical proportions, so i guess sony guys had that on their minds... ZL is living prof that extra dimensions are here just cause pure esthetics. My only complain... they could have put larger battery also then...

I cant find anywhere on the net if the xperia logo on the back is pressed into the glass or the 'shatter-proof film'...the reason I ask is that I have protected my screen, but the back has small scratches. Ide hate to loose the xperia logo in an effort to renew its original luster with a new film...anyone know?
The Xperia logo in thw back doesn't come out while removing the film.

Check with your country's sony store if removing asf does void warranty before removing it.
Since Sony doesn't want people to remove the screen protector is there any type of anti fingerprint coding on it? I mean If I remove the screen protector will the screen be nice to use or will it just get all smudged in fingerprints that are impossible to remove?

No coating, just straight glass...but I'd recommend getting a matt finish (anti smudge) screen protector if u are going to remove.. Or unless ur screen is already scratched, simply apply it over the top of the factory one. Couldnt personally tell a difference in responsiveness by doing so.

Hi guys
Currently I'm using an s3 .. But am going to buy a new phone next month and I'm confused between Xperia Z and the Htc one
The only thing which I dont like about the Z is that when using the anti shatter film , the phone doesn't have good display from some angles ..
So I've searched alot to see if there is a difference in display after removing the anti shatter film .. But I found nothing
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance

I have still got mine on and sorry can you tell me what angle is meant to be bad because I can't find it (if you understand what I am saying)
I cannot fault the XZ I have just had it over 2 months and extremely happy with it

" the phone doesn't have good display from some angles "
I think the Z's display is fantastic. The fact that the viewing angle is somewhat narrow has an upside in that ambient light seems to be blocked out more effectively.

not only that, but there are 2 things i don't understand with this "viewing angle craze":
1. what person uses their phone while looking at it from a narrow angle ?
i'd say that probably 99% of the time, everyone uses their phone looking more or less straight at the display.
2. when i look at the prices for extra foils that secure the device from people looking over your shoulder... i'd say we already have that feature for FREE !!! (you know, it's not a bug, it's a FEATURE ! ).
Also, from what i could see (and read) about FW .253 the "problem" seems to be mostly gone or can at least be minimized through the new display balance settings.
More importantly: as long as you don't have another phone to compare it with you, you most likely won't have as much of a problem with the display as everyone says.
At least i know that i don't have any problems with it, i actually love the display (but i had a Xperia Arc before, so the bigger, brighter screen with its hd resolution is rather impressive in comparrison :cyclops: )

i agree with you,, 99% smartphone users tend to view it straight on..(including me)
IMO for bad viewing angles as they say, well for me its a very good thing,, of course i dont want my seatmate or anyone reading what messages im reading on,, what if you have some transactions with and will probably they will knew about it cause of the better viewing angle.. privacy issues right..
when watching movies or photo viewing, ur not watching a movie tilted..always dead on..
and on topic with ASF,,,i suggest not to remove it.. protection for unwanted scratches yes, but the best thing to do put thin screen protctor on top ASF.. if it wont bother you..

Hi,
Yeah ok I haven't searched if there's a thread on this (if so, don't worry Mods I'll close it). Quick question,
Those with the white Sony Xperia Z, Do you use a case and screen protector? I'm worried my XZ will change color in my jeans or black trousers... I'm particularly worried in the sides. Sony's quality is much better than HTCs so im just worried as im an ex HTC user.
Am I just worried over a silly matter or is it a problem?
Edit - They give us a screen protector... Do they know something we dont?

That's because there is a factory-applied anti-shatter film on top of the glass which is easier to scratch than the glass is (obviously), so they provide the screen protector because of anticipated higher demand of it.

You can rest easy on this one. I've had mine since the day 3 launched it on their network. No screen protector and no case, although I have a Poetic stand type case for watching videos but that's only been used twice, and not a scratch on the glass or a colour out of place. The only thing I would say is watch the plastic trim around the sides, luckily on the white one its hard to notice but of you drop it a few times the surface comes off.
Mines been dropped off a ladder at work onto concrete, fallen out my pocket whilst mountain biking and been run over by another bike, it's been pressure washed (although the little water sensor things did all turn red at that point) and it's been stood on.
I've never seen a phone that holds up this well to abuse since the old Nokia 3310.

If you want it in percentage, then I'd say it will be around 0.25%
0.00001% will the screen crack without a reason.
Just make sure you have a screen protector and/or a case. I've got a case which protects 90% of the phone (only the sides are open and i've got a glass screen protector. So I'm not afraid AT ALL! when my phone falls.

Hi,
I got my Xperia Z1 Compact yesterday. I even left the original screen protector on the device (untill I get the clear screen protector). And I put a Case-Mate Tough Case on the phone. So its safe I would say.
Within 24 hrs (10 of which were sleeping hours) I noticed a crack in the screen. The phone just lies on the table getting charged.
I contacted the retailer, and as I'm writing this message, I'm waiting for their answer. Anything less then new phone will statisfy me.
The phone hasn't actually been used, exept for a few whatsapps, and 3 calls.....
So, they say it is a great phone.....it is, but with cracking screens i don't know. As a matter of fact, I searched for Z1 Compact problems, but didn't find the self cracking screen issue's.....
Mine cracked from being carried in my pocket with case and screen protector. I think Sony is just inconsistent with build quality I would get something from another manufacturer even though I really liked the Z.
