Unlock? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to unlock my cappy that isn't going to cost me? I don't have a computer and I tried vibrant unlock and it didn't work. I dropped my note 2 and the screen is FUBAR. So I was going to use my cappy until I get the 175 together to submit a claim on the phone insurance with T-Mobile. I have a good sim to use just can't find my unlock code.

You still have to pay for the unlock code. I cannot afford it as of now with having to save to pay for a new note 2. Also not available from the play store in my country so it says.

If you read the "download" section in the linked OP again it might clear it up for you.......The nv data thing is normal. Just do what it says.....backup efs (then it can read nv) then unlock twice. Once for partial unlock twice to fully unlock.
Once it is unlocked and your thinking, wow this was actually really easy, consider a donation to the author for making it so.....even if it isn't until after that note2 is paid for

If you cannot access it from the Play Store would you like me to upload the apk for you to just download and install that way? You shouldn't have to pay to unlock your device, at least with all the options on the captivate. Another user requested the same check his thread in the General section, m1batt1 also posted another, longer but still effective, way to unlock if the app doesn't work.

So it worked. I am now using my cappy in T-Mobile. Thanks for that. My note 2 uses a micro sim and the cappy takes a regular sim. I used my old straight talk that's no good anymore because I ported my number for it over to T-Mobile and cut out a guide for the micro sim. Is there a better way or is that about it?

Nope, this is a common misconception, and one the mobile phone companies (unsurprisingly) aren't keen to dispel. The confusion arises because unlocking and unblocking are often mixed up, yet mean different things.
Unlocking is totally legal. It just means making the phone work with any Sim card.
Unblocking is illegal. This is the practice of making a phone work again after it's been blocked by the networks, usually as a result of its being reported lost or stolen. Unsurprisingly, It is thoroughly illegal and should not be attempted.
If you are in a contract and got the phone from them at a discount with it then maybe....But then why would you be unlocking it.

hmm people still sell these "illegal"? codes, and what if you bought your phone used off ebay for example. There goes any resale value and in turn less interest in a contract phone.
If your concerned about it, you should lock your phone, what else can I say.:good:

Unnecessary. I also found out that there are at least 3 bills in congress to address that specifically. They also cannot tell when it was done. Nor do they much care.

That's not insane its just being greedy, the other side to the story is this phone is old and I got an upgrade that replaced the T679. Just want to give the phone to a friend so that he can use it but they still charge you a flat fee of $75.
That Bell Canada for you
$75 is outrageous! I've looked around a few months ago... Average price for this phone is about $30

Can I SIM unlock the phone once rooted?

Ah, I thought there would be some special way to do it (for free) once rooted. No worries, I'll contact Three at some point.
I have heard of owners obtaining a SIM unlock code for £15, but there wasn't any need to wait three months

What choices do I have

Sprint has a policy of switching costumers to a different device after 3 exchanges. I'm waiting for my 3rd HTC one, all for the same reason with the SIM card error. I can't imagine that this replacement will be any different. With that being said what choices will I have for a new device

S4 pretty much. Maybe a Note II.
Quick question, are you taking the SIM card out at any time, or are you not touching it? Because I only ever had problems with mine after I removed it from my phone and put it back in.
I also have the sim card error but it comes and goes every once and a while. When ever I get it it usually goes away after 15-20 min. Even with all the issues the HTC One has I would never trade it in for any of the phones available atm.

Same. I haven't had the sim error, does it just deny LTE? If thats all it does I'd suffer for a bit (if you don't have a time restraint) and see what the Nexus5 announce says. The word is it has the CDMA bands for Sprint use and I've been itching to get my hands on a true nexus phone.

I've never touched it. My thought I'd that I shouldn't have to do quick temporary fixes on the phone. That and possibly giving Sprint a reason to deny liability.

I dunno, maybe it's the advantage premium plan I'm on that changes things. It's nice because it's less than most of the plans, but I've got to go to a repair center for anything, I can't just switch things over the phone.

Have you tried updating your Service profiles?
Just contact Sprint via chat, and ask them to re activate your device. They should ask you for your IMEI number.
Make sure they ask you for it. I had this happen to me after I got my phone's board replaced. The chat guy kept telling me to get a new SIM card, and I kept telling him it was pretty much the same phone, and exactly the same card. So yeah.

From what I remember when I worked there it had to be a manufacturer defect every time and the 3 swaps have to occur within a 6 month time frame. Not sure if yours fell into that. If they did then your store might be more screwy than others. Or you just weren't upset enough

Seriously? An S3? That doesn't make any sense to me. It should definitely be an S4. When we had the EVO and Epic come out a lot of EVOs had issues and several people were able to do the swap and we got them into Epics. A phone a year older with much lower specs shouldn't qualify as a comparable device.

Scotch tape fixed it for my wife's phone also make sure SIM surface is super clean. My wife's phone had a big greasy finger print on contact side and recurring issues but after scotch taping on plastic side to keep it tight it's fixed. But I never had this issue on mine, I did however blow a speaker and swapped it a month ago.
I wouldn't take another phone over this still.

It's probably either a scam that MAY work for some devices with similar exploits or actually works similarly to the way OEM's would flash a device. Not sure about everyone else, but I'm definitely leaning more towards the first option seeing as no one has root yet...
Definitely bs!!! If root had been achieved for our device you would read about it on every forum and every tech website example being android authority and def xda!!

I think it does not work that way. We must have the box or dongle to run the software, you may have a payment system for unlocking attempts.
Is a slot machine to unlock.
I do not like dongles.
Who knows it may work? But the device itself costs $115-$135. So who's going to be the guinea pig?

Seems a little risky though, it says "Root by flash" whereas that could mean what I believe was done on an older version of the S4's firmware, where a temporary recovery was flashed in order to root. For the S5 and newer S4 firmware on AT&T and VZN, this would be impossible with the lockdown.
The software will only work with the dongle. It's not flashable to the phone itself.

I'd be interested to see if we could get our hands on that app. I've got some friends from Taiwan and Mainland that I could reach out to... Maybe one of them can grab it for us. Anyway, hope I'm not posting **** information here; definitely not my intent. What we do know however, that there is a factory unlocker out there. Whether it can work with our region is an unknown but, it might be worth a look.

This is definitely good info. I might try and get on chat with Samsung to see if they'd have a download link...probably a long shot, but worth it.
I won't hold my breath, but I'm interested in hearing how this goes as well. The lack of root on the Note 4 after being out since last year is keeping me from swapping out my s5 for a s6 edge.
This would be great, but alas I am sure Verizon has made steps to ensure that it wont be that easy for us!
