Does everyone agree that hooking up to pc sucks? - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I found out my new Razr I couldn't use the SD card as a mass storage device, I was disappointed. I thought oh well, I guess it'll only be a problem if I ever want to take or dump files to friends computers but since having to rely on Moto's own device connection ways I'm getting a bit annoyed. First of all, if you want to "Move" a folder from for example, the root folder of the SD card into another folder, it's as if it's copying it bit by bit and takes AGES even in my USB 3 port. USB Mass storage has always treated the SD card like anything else in windows and will just move in a millisecond, but not this Also, I noticed upon transferring a folder which had 98 files, only 90 showed up on the properties once it was on the sd card I like to make sure transfers happened ok by comparing file sizes in bytes so this obviously throws it way off.
Has anyone come up with an alternative solution I wonder?

An alternative is a simple card reader
I think there were some experiments to get mass storage back, but i don't now if they succeeded...
But the new MTP - technology is better for the android system, it doesn't have to unmount the sdcard. and pc and android can parallel access the sdcard.
gesendet von meinem Motorola RAZR i rooted+unlocked

I guess they are some good reasons alright and yeah, I might have to start carrying a card reader so

Personally I like MTP, it's much faster than USB connection, but still it would be great to be able to choose from two options. I've read somewhere that even Motorola had problems with creating USB drivers, so it will be miracle if we see that option on our phone.

Airdroid.
There, i solved all your problems.

Never heard of airdroid, will check it out, thanks
MTP seems a lot slower than USB to me? Just the fact you can't "move" like I described is enough

Ok airdroid seems cool, but it seems not to be working properly for me, I've managed to view my sms on web.airdroid.com and the phone details etc come up right, but the internal and SD storage are both showing as 5.13gb with 1.34gb free when my SD card is 32gb.
Also it's giving errors on trying to open photo/video/app folders.
Like the idea so if it can work it'd be great.

Agree
I agree, it sucks!
It´s so slow the cable connection, that it reminds me my old moto V360´s one. Unbelievable!

It's strange because Airdroid works fine for me (expect the phone details but it's not a big bug)

Works pretty well for me. Maybe you modified something?

Did you test it today? I saw great ratings for it this morning when I downloaded it first but then later today I checked back and the latest ratings were saying it wasn't working.
Didn't modify anything at all really, tried both with an account and without an account and same issues.

Hooking up Razr i to PC really sucks cause you always need to install drivers and Motorola application when you plug into a new PC (and remove they after, when PC is not yours). But I think wi-fi transfer sucks too cause it's slower. =(
When I need to transfer small files I use X-Plore app on Android. X-Plore can access shared folders on your network. It works like a charm!
When I need to transfer big files, I preffer to plug on USB. There's no other way...

How safe is data on MicroSD/SDHC?

Every once in a while I'm having the same sort of problem whith my storage card, whether it's MiniSD, MicroSD or SDHC. To be more precise some/all files disappear leaving nothing but some bloody FILE*.CHK files, which seem to be completely useless. I did some google-search and there seems to be no practical way of retrieving the lost data.
I'm curious: why is it happening in the first place and has anyone been successful in combatting this issue? (don't tell me about backups )
I have yet to have a problem with the mem card in my Kaiser. it is a 6Gb Sandisk. Do you have an off-brand?
My old HTC Sable had issues like you describe...
arent .chk files left over by scandisk on a windows box?
this could be due to not ejecting the hardware before removing it from the pc!
under what circumstances are you experiencing this
Yes when combatting this issue I find that handguns are useless and shotguns are all the rage. When trying to do the official combat I like to taunt the problem a bit with the pistol (which just makes it mad) and then go all out with the shot gun. It's always good to have someone else at your side with a missle launcher or something, ya know, for the hardcore combat.
.CHK files are recovered file fragments from Scandisk. I would try a low level format of your SD card and then reformat as FAT32 (for the love of ____, do not use NTFS). NTFS is not designed for removable media and will give you nothing but headaches.
How do you low level an SD card. You only really hear about that with SCSI drives now days, Or do you mean a full format?
im not sure that the post that says dont format ur sd card as ntfs is accurate, while it may be true that a windows mobile device will probably not recognise this disc at all, i use an sd card formatted as ntfs in a laptop with no problems!
try hdtune @ www.hdtune.com/ this might be useful!

You can use an SD card reader with a PC and use a program such as Boot/Nuke to do a DoD-certified erase of the contents.

You can format removable media with NTFS, but you need to be extremely careful since NTFS is constantly caching data from the drive. Unless you disable write-back caching or eject the card each time prior to removing it (which cannot be done on a phone), you run a high risk of corrupting the data on it.
The problem with NTFS on removable media seems to be a windows issue. Not sure if that is windows mobile as well but it also seems to be fixed in a service pack. If I were having problems I wouldn't be using something with user rights and permissions on a device that does nothing with that.

Forgot to mention when trying to fix this I used the windows disc-check utility, but initially problem started after I installed one of the games (Tomb Rider I think) and the battery power was down to 2-3% when I turned my Kaiser off. I couldn't access the programm files folder from ppc, and it was empty when I opened it on pc...except there was tombrider.exe left...

Hmmm, interestingly it doesn't display the file system in the properties menu like it would for the hard drives... but I'm pretty sure I didn't format the card...unless was formatted NTFS when first inserted in a device...

You installed the games in the MicroSD, right?
I experienced it twice, sorted out that it happens when I'm using an application that installed in the MicroSD and then turned the device off. The strange thing that it is only occurred when using a large sized and resource extensive application (especially games), it doesn't happen when using light application such as YahooGo!, MapKing, etc. I end up to install all apps in main memory, and lived peacefully (finger crossed)
I hoped someone could explain why this happen, even better cured it

Actually you still can save your files, it still there just with mixed up name and extention
1. Sort the file by it's file size, you could get an idea what file it was by it's size
2. Change the file extention according to what you think it supposed to be judging by its size, ie:
small file to *.txt and open it with notepad, read what's in it and change it to what it's supposed to be .pwi, .xls, etc
2 - 6 MB files to *.mp3
etc
I know it's painful especially with my 2GB data, also you cannot saved your application this way, but I saved my most recent and important data this way, for the rest I just have to satisfy with my 1 month old backup
If anyone could suggest better way, pleaseee let me know
Just happen again
[email protected]!!! me and my big mouth... it just happen again this morning, same thing, install app in storage card, device turned off and wham!
But this time I did some googling and found this utility really helpfull

Well, anyone could explain what caused it and how to prevent it?
Any information will be appreciated
Thanks

Yes mate! Sounds very much like what happened here - after intstalling Tomb Rider (4-6MB) in the MicroSD I launched it and then soft reset - my program files vanished...And I dont think I could do anything about that, the .CHK files I got after running the checkdisc utility were all the same size - 32kb, something to do with the cluster size I think...
I guess the question of the cause and the way to prevent it remains open...
Bump
No one can help?
Anyone also experienced this problem? Please tell us your experience, who know we could sort out something

internal Storage Problem

Hello, I have an HTC Touch diamond from Telus, i've searched around these forums, and can't find quite the similar problem I have. My device only lists 102.55 MB of internal storage in the settings, and when i try to the Clear Storage program it says it can't find the mass storage, is this fixable or do i have to take it back to Telus.
Are you sure? If you click on "memory" in "settings" the first screen you get ("main" tab) only refers to the ROM and RAM available. You need to click on the "storage card" tab to find the 4Gb of internal storage

I am experiencing the same issue with the Sprint version I received today. Same issue with the Clear Storage program. When I go to settings, memory, storage card, it says "Total Storage Card Memory: Not installed"
Thanks.
Can you find the internal storage using file explorer on the HTC and explorer on activsync on your PC? Have you suceeded in copying something to it using activsync? If you can it is there. Why it is not being reported in memory is not so clear
A problem which I had a few times ocured when I tried to start a programm on the internal storage whil it was conected to a pc as a internal storage then the Diamond gives the internal storage a other name such as internal storage 1, 2 etc
Have a look at your file explorer you maid find it there.
Willem
Slight variation on this topic but related.
Can someone tell me if there are hidden files or something similar on the internal storage?
When I look at All settings -> system -> memory, it says that there is 2725MB in use but if I total the individual values for each folder in my internal storage it only adds up to 2122MB. It's driving me mad as space is limited enough as it is...
In a response to an earlier query, if you plugin your device as a mass storage device, the Internal Storage is unmounted from the phone's system so you cannot use it, and when you try to launch an application which requires this internal storage you can run into big problems of it "creating" a new Internal Storage. By this time when you unplug your device from the computer it will then rename your actual Internal Storage to Internal Storage 1/2 and you will have to go into file explorer and delete this, then reconnect your device to the computer and it should be ok again when you disconnect it.

A good point. To give you an example of how this works. I installed TT6 by putting my (legitimate) CAB file maps etc onto the internal memory by setting it as a USB device and using drag and drop in Explorer. The moment I disconnected the phone from the PC it re-recognised the internal memory and ran the TomTom auto-installation app. It is exactly the same as inserting an SD card into an SD slot of any other PDA.
Having same issue. I deleted the contents and the folder Internal Storage and am doing a hard reset. Will post results.
BTW - HTC and Sprint really should have a better solution to fixing this rather than all this mess. Even the ipod is easier to remount when you unplug during sync and I thought that was annoying....

I think you may have misunderstood what we are saying. This problem only occurs when you choose the (non-default) option of the PC recognising the internal storage as a seperate USB drive rather than as an activsync connection when you make your connection to the PC. If you choose that option then no automatic activsync activity will occur when you dock because activsync will not start. On the other hand file transfers will be much quicker and easier and you can use drag and drop in your PC's explorer.
If you decide not to use this facility then activsync works fine and you should have no problems with automated syncing and unplugging whilst that is happening (although that latter action is not recomended with either Windows or Apple based phones or PDAs).
The main advantage that Windows based PDAs and phones have over Apple based ones are that they are much more easily changed (as most of these forums show!) and "tweaked" to suit what the end user wants. Apple is more "technology for technophobes". However the disadvantage with the Windows system is that there is more for the end user to bugger up - hence all the cries for help on this forum.
No I understood what you meant. I was just comparing the issue. When Internal Storage still shows up under My Device but does not show up under Memory it tells me that the phone has "un mounted" the memory. The question is how do you re-mount this? Unless i am missing something which I very well may be....this appears to be the issue. At least the one I am faced with.

You remount it by returning the HTC to its standard activsync setting, via its settings menu You can do that while it is still connected to the PC and when you hit OK activsync instantly starts and syncs. In addition Explorer recognises it as a mobile device rather than the removable storage when it was in USB mode.
I do not think it is correct to compare an additional Windows feature (that the Apple does not have) with the standard feature that the Apple does have. A more accurate comparison would be the two in the same activsync mode, in which case they are similar, and neither has this problem
At the end of the day if anybody does not like the extra facility the HTC has to show and use its internal storage in the same way as a memory card when hooked up to the PC (because of its disadvantages) then they should not use it and they should stick with activsync. At least in Windows world we have the option.
WOW!
Dropping the ipod reference and my apologies for stepping on toes by mentioning it.
Setting it to active sync or hard drive has NO affect on this what so ever. I wish it did as it would be an easy fix. Apparently during any kind of disconnect the memory module freaks out and it corrupts the file system. That is apparently why the phone will not recognize it. Some people have had success connecting the phone over and over to a computer until it mounts the drive and then via the computer they format the drive and then hard reset and its fixed.
In this case its very similar as the HTC device will not remount the memory module. I contacted HTC and they verified that its a problem and have recommended an RMA to sprint.
Personally I don't even buy the HTC response. There has to be a way to remount the memory back to the phone as the drive will occasionally show up even in windows. It just wont allow a format as it locks up.
Oops sorry if I sounded a tad touchy... . I really did not mean to upset.
It is just that I think that Apple are really good at marketing to the "cool fool" market, and persuading people that they are technologically more advanced than they really are. The classic example of this is the iphone that was trumpetted as having lots of "new" benefits, which had been on other competitor's phones for ages. The only thing cutting edge about them is their ease of use (which is I have to admit very good)
However I do not have the problem you are describing with my HTC touch diamond, and nor, I suspect, do the vast majority of other users. My memory module has never freaked out and corrupted my file system no matter how many times I connect or disconnect and no matter how I do it. So I suspect it is not a universal HTC problem, but one limited to the way that Sprint and maybe others (I assume in the US?) have implemented the software, or maybe on a rogue batch of hardware or software?
No worries...text does that some times.
Yeah I think its pretty much a US thing. PPCGEEKS has a thread going about it and it appears to be all sprint phone related.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=37485
So far what I have is this: When using file explorer, under My Device Is a folder called Internal Storage. When I go into settings to check memory, I have Storage & Program, 102.55MB and 203.84MB, respectively, that's Total. In the Storage card tab, it says Not installed. And when i try to clear storage and format internal storage it says "no Mass Storage found"
So I hopped over to PPC and this is what I found, unfortunately i'm going to work so no time but will try and report later on.

No go, Vista won't recognize my diamond as a drive hence no format...
I now know what I did wrong, I copied the internal storage to pc then back again using the disk function instead of AS. I now have internal storage2 showing and can't access any programs.

delete the Internal Storage folder (which will just be a folder) with total commander, resco explorer or file explorer, then connect ur phone to ur pc in disk mode, then disconnect and it should rename back!

MicroSD Car Messed Up

My SD card has started acting up on me. Recently, a ton of folders with gibberish symbol names showed up. I can't delete these folders in either my phone or my PC. These folders have nothing in them. I can't transfer files to or from it. While in my computer, the card window will occasionally freeze and tell me the thing has stopped responding. I have made sure the lock switch is open on the adapter. I'd like to flash a new ROM but the card won't even open in my PC. Says I need to format it before I can use it, but no method (freeware, Explorer, CMD) will work. I get thrown messages about how it won't work or whatever. In fact, I was trying diskmgmt.msc while typing this earlier but I got a BSOD memory dump. First time I've had one on this PC. Anyway, anyone know what I can do? I just want it to work, I paid a lot for this card. I have a feeling it's because I let the device format it, but I dunno. IF it helps, I'm running Win7 x64. Thanks.
Like you said, your MicroSD is probably done for. You might try to format it using your PC. But it probably won't work.
Some manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on flash memory so you might be able to swap it for a new one since this obviously isn't your fault. I've done so with at least two memory cards before (but then again I'm from Europe so it might be different for me).
I'm on my second MicroSD card, after I started getting warnings that certain files couldn't be accessed.
Actually, the second one (both are 8gb: first was a SanDisk, 2nd is a Kingston) gave me a warning yesterday.
Never has this problem with other phones... I don't know if the MicroSD format is prone to this sort of thing, or it is an interaction with the X1 - but it doesn't inspire confidence.
I think I will do a weekly copy of all files from the card onto my PC.

While connecting the phone to the PC it is possible that a program intended for synchronizing or importing media file to PC can delete the files from SDcard. So does "PMB Sony" for example. You can change it in options.
Same issue with samsung Galaxy s2
Same issue here. My device keeps deleting video files from my external 16gb microsd.
I put video files inside a folder (/media/video) and after some time the files disappear. The only thing that I do is plug and unplug from a pc mounting usb storage several times a day (i do not use Kies).
I also used a freeware program to recover deleted files from the microsd and found out that the files were marked as deleted (i had success in recovering).
This thing is starting to be very annoying.
I'm on MIUI 1.12.9.
Thanks

This is true and I also can confirm this. I did not notice that my videos were missing until I saw this post and checked for my videos on my XD card and they were all gone What was odd was that the video which were transferred over from another computer to the XD card did not vanish but the videos which were recorded with this Samsung Note did all vanish WTF
I never did a sync either.
I really don't remember the used application 'cause I did it on a pc that i can not acces anymore. In any case, the application was free and i really found it on 5seconds search on google.

I'm thinking of two things, neither of which are probably right
Firstly, I recently installed Window7 alongside my Linux Mint installation. On this I've noticed that if I copy files from Mint to the windows partition that Win7 often does a chkdsk thing on booting up and goes and deletes all these files ! I've never had this happen with any other version of Windows (Xp, etc). I'm wondering is there some filesystem 'tag' on your pc that makes the system think that file is corrupt or something and results in the files being hidden/deleted.
Secondly, I was looking on Amazon for a Sandisk sd card and I saw a review by a guy who said that many sd cards are fakes and not made by Sandisk at all. Apparently a lot of these have a much smaller capacity than claimed and as you add data they fill up and older data is destroyed. Here is the link

Same issue here..
First of all, I don't think it's a resolution issue because I have two similar videos, one disappeared while the other is still there.
Second of all, my videos are on the phone's memory and not an external sd.
If I go to folder details and check last modified date I notice that all folders from which videos have disappeared have been modified at the same time.
No solution?!
did anybody contact Samsung?
and could it be app "smart lock" causing this disappearance?
thanks
all of you developers out there.. anyone to help??
I might be wrong, but i think that those files aren't deleted at all. You may have a FOUND or LOST dir on you micro SD card with files in it that are the same size of the lost Videos.
I think this problem occures when you turn the phone off while it searches for media files on the card.
Try making a .nomedia file on your SD Card root folder, Stock players might not find any Videos after you've done that but you can easily open them with a Filemanager (ES FileExplorer).
.nomedia helped me

maybe I do not understand your proposal, but the problem persists if I put video in the memory of the phone (not external microSD) adn I do not find the file with File Explorer, so I think it is lost...
I remember some people complaining about this when the EVO 4G first came out as well & for some it seemed to be bad SD cards but there were also a lot of firmware changes happening so unclear about the determined cause. This is troubling & would not like to still have to worry about this if I purchase the SGNote. Sounds like backup & keeping an eye on this is necessary. Has anyone emailed Samsung?

Transfering files without Hisuite

Hi there!
I am a new member, recently bought P9 (L09) coming from Note 2.
I can't find a way of transfering files to PC without Hisuite.
I just came back from the holidays and took about 500 pics.
When I connect a phone via USB I can see only about 10 last pictures in DCIM folder on SD card.
I've searched the web high and low, but couldn't find out the conclusive answer.
Please help me!
Thanks
Probably the photos are inside the phone internal storage, not on the SD card.
The camera mode has an explicit option (you can check by swiping right) named "Priority save on SD card", maybe it changes or it changed by itself.
Anyway when you connect the USB you should see the SD card storage but also the "Internal storage" that contains another DCIM folder, which probably contains the other 490 photos.
Hi ScareIT,
thanks, but photos are on the SD card (size is 2Gb).
I can see them on the phone in Files app.
Obviously, Huawei wants me to use their Hisuite.
It's something to do maybe with correct driver? I know there are different file transfer formats(MTP,PTP). And I have even enabled USB debugging, but to no availability.
I haven't had any problems with Note 2 before.
How do you guys transfer files or pictures between PC and a phone?
I have the same problem, connecting with MTP protocol via HiSuite, creation of folders is extremely slow, and I found it impossible to move files from the phone (be it on internal storage or external SD) to the phone in a different folder.
I'd like to use USB mass storage option, but it's nowhere to be found in settings, only PTP, MTP and several other useless options... On top of that, i've lost a file (voice recording) trying to move it from one folder to another... should have saved it on PC first. But with mass storage i'm pretty sure i could recover it.
If anyone can help, would be really great.

There's a program on PlayStore called "wifi file transfer pro" It's the easiest way to transfer files between any mobile/computers, anything that has wireless connection. Give the free version a try first.

You can ignore hisuite by selecting "files"in the notification shade. It will be MTP like any other Android phone.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies!
I know its possible to transfer files with a third party app over wifi, but that's not what I am looking for.
And Marsou77: It's not working for me: when I choose Files in Notification menu- I can view Internal and SD card, but all I can see is only 24 pictures out of 500 in SD card.
And another thing I just tested: I've took a new picture and I can see it on SD card fine now. So I am not sure where all other pictures are?! Maybe some sort of corruption of SD card? But I had transfered all pictures with Hisuite fine. Anyone?
I'm having the same problem. I've already connected my P9 to my PC and transferred a whole load of images about a month or so ago, but now I'm about to run out of storage on my phone and I can only see about 10 images in my DCIM/Camera folder where I know I have about 1000. I'm also missing a whole load of files in my download folder including a big video file that I want to transfer to free up space.
A load of other folders have missing files on my PC but I can see them on my phone and I can double check their location in file details. It seems that I'm only able to view about 20% of the files that are on my device.
If you have password or fingerprint active, you have to keep the phone unlocked for the transfer to work. Just keep the screen on. I had the same problem and now it works.
Just to confirm: I have no passwords or fingerprint scanner set on...
Same here - only some files are visible. Unlocking the phone is not solving this issue.
Ok so this is odd: I've connected my phone to my work computer and I can now see 450 of my 1000+ photos that I've taken on my phone. I moved about 30 images from the phone, deleting them from the internal storage but when I check my phone the images are still there! What's going on? I feel that I'm missing something important here, but I see no other options on the phone regarding USB connection settings.
I don't know if it makes a difference (why would it?) but my home PC is running windows 10 whilst my work one is still windows 7.
Are there any drivers I should be updating to allow Windows to see files on the phone?
I tried searching the phones internal storage for ALL .jpg files and I can see on my phone that I have 1000+ photos that I've taken and around 100+ images that have been downloaded from various places but when I search for all .jpg files I'm only getting 700 results in total. Something strange is going on and I hope I'm just being an idiot here and that I don't have a problem with my phone.
Did you try what Marsou77 said, when pluging phone into pc, on the phones screen, select files, not pictures, you should then be able to browse the whole phone from PC

Yep, that's exactly what I'm doing. Tried keeping the screen on too as has been suggested but I'm still only seeing some of my files. Installed a different file manager on the P9 to double check where the phone says they are but they just don't appear on the PC.
Good news and bad news.
The good news is that I can now see my 1000+ photos and all the videos I've taken with the camera so I can now copy them off and free up more space on my phone. Very relieved that I can access all the files on my phone again.
The bad news is that I have no idea what has caused this sudden change in access. I'm using my work computer which is windows 7 and I haven't changed anything with the phone or done anything different today, just connected the phone and selected "files", as I have done each time. The only thing I can think of is that I deleted a few things from the phone yesterday whilst at home. I went through the installed file manager and decided to delete a few large-ish, downloaded videos that I decided that I didn't need to keep. Perhaps this increased the freespace on my device to a certain level in which allowed me to access all my files? I have no idea, and that's frustrating because this account can't really help anyone else that comes across this issue.
Since you asked, I install Flickr on my phone which uploads all images automatically at full resolution to its online server. Since Flickr gives 1 Tb free, it generally a no hassle solution. I have never connected my phone to my iMac so far. Plus the Hisuite has no OsX option.
Today just happened a strange thing: I connected my phone to download few photos (stored in the SD) and I found them in their place ("DCIM" folder), but I also found a lot of other photos were missing (and I immediately thought about this thread): I still found them inside the SD but inside the "Pictures" folder, not inside "DCIM" one.
I don't remember I actived any option, but that's it.
Just hope it can help some people in my situation.
Hi all!
I think I know the answer.
Basically its to do with a Memory storage settings>Default Location>Internal/ SD Card Storage and emulated storage.
Basically what's happened I was still playing with a settings and customizing my phone and set Default Location to Internal and then SD Card storage. And location of pictures became kinda scattered. I am still learning/reading how Android storage works for SD cards and also emulated storage. Now I set default location to internal storage, phone gave some warning about encryption and it restarted and now I can open SD card on my PC and all the pictures are there! Happy days
Hopefully that will help some people. Cheers
