has anyone figured out how to open ebooks in it?
You need your ebooks (pdf) to be on your SD card I believe on the top level directory. I usually just find mine in Astro and it'll ask if you want to use Adobe to open them then it'll save them as documents you've opened.

Thanks, I just need to find a current version of ASTRO.
Aight, i have adobe reader 10. it does everything i need but can't find the reflow option (make fonts bigger). I dont want to have to downgrade to 9. too slow and choppy. Any help?
So far, the best pdf reader I have found is ezPDF. I use it on my Archos tablet. Has anyone tried this on the NC?.

Works w/ bugs. Getting Special Characters on screen, making the book un readable at times.
ezPDF, Adobe, RepliGo.
Since I bought it as a reader, first thing I did was check a bunch of pdf reading apps. From experience RepliGo works, Adobe works, and ezPDF works. The best of the three is ezPDF, but you need an SD card for the cache. The next best is Adobe.
I don't think any of them have an open feature that allows you to browse for the file you want to open, so they all require a file manager. Adobe and ezPDF both have a recent feature that remembers what pdfs you have opened recently, so that kinda helps.
Could anyone comment on the native PDF app? Does it work in landscape mode? And how well do panning and zooming work? I know in the original nook that zooming didn't really work, but it looks like reviews of the NC say that PDF handling is much better.
I've got a whole of math class notes as PDFs, and trying to reflow on those would be a pretty epic failure.
Thanks in advance!

What do you mean i need an sd card for cache? Will that fix the problems with the special characters? if so, can i just sotore the pdf on the card and u can view it normally, without those secial characters coming up?

Perhaps, I am wrong, but I could not get ezPDF to work without an SD card. ezPDF creates a folder on the SD card where it keeps information on the opened pdfs, configurations and settings. It also has a temp folder which I just assumed to be for memory purposes.
I have tried many pdfs and they look no different than on a computer, save for the occasional LN, which stands for a link. Those special characters don't really interfere with anything since they reside at the bottom.

The native PDF is QuickOffice. There a few things that bother me about it. One, there are certain formats that it does not like for pdfs and will just display a giant x. Two, it does not save the page where you left off. Three, to switch the page, you must swipe down to up as opposed to right to left or tapping the right side. Four, it does not have an indicator to display whether the page is loading or completely loaded. I sometimes find myself waiting on blank pages to do something. Or used to, since I use ezPDF which has an indicator and fixes all the mentioned problems.
To answer your questions about the native app: It works in landscape. You can fit the pdf to width or zoom in and out by using the pinch gesture or tapping the (- +) that shows up on screen. The pdf handling is much much better. The native app does not give you many options, so text reflow is out of the question, which I presume is not a bad thing in your case.

+1 for ezPDF with an SDcard.
Night mode with reflow is great, but I have problems tapping the bookmark button successfully.
Maybe my version of ezPDF is different than yours. I am running it on an Archos 101, not an NC. I am here because I am looking for a smaller tablet and deciding between the Archos 70 and the NC.
My ezPDF has a tab across the top that allows me to select either "recently viewed PDFs" or "all PDFs". The "all PDFs" tab lists directories and can expand the directories individually to select PDF files.
In my experience, ezPDF is way better than Adobe's reader for Android. Adobe's works pretty well, but is pretty basic. There are many, many features in ezPDF that are not in Adobe's.
OTOH, from what I have read in this and the B&N forums, the built-in QuickOffice PDF reader is less than basic. It has no reflow, for example, which I think is required for this type of device. It also seems to not support some common image types or compressions, or at-least folks are reporting pages with red x's across them. The feature set has been reduced from what QuickOffice offers in the actual product.
I find ezpdf to be too slow when it comes to going to the next page.
The stock reader works in landscape but I can not get it to remember where I left off.
I'm still looking for one I like. I wish there was an Android version of Annotate. That's my favorite on the Ipad.
I agree it is slow, but I can't read that fast. For me, the page scroll at the bottom more than compensates for that. The 101 is a bit faster than the NC (1GHz vs 800MHz), but I consider ezPDF so superior that I won't look back.
I assume you mean iAnnotate, and yes, I agree.
sin7, thanks for answering my questions about QuickOffice. That actually sounds like it should work for my needs pretty conveniently, since I'm using it for math references which don't necessarily need to stay on the same page.
I've seen a few people in other threads mention that vudroid works nicely for PDFs on NC once you've installed the softkeys app. Mine is still in the mail, so no personal experience, but that might help some of you still looking for the best app?
Could somebody stick up Adobe Reader 10 apk somewhere? I'm having the devil of a time tracking it down, and I cant seem to find the damned APK file on my phone to pull it off...
Thanks.
- Will.
You can search for the Adobe Reader on freewarelovers.com.
For some reason 10.0 is listed as an old version apk, but you can still download it.
I love the fact I can drop a SD card into my Nook and change the whole thing. But one thing I could use a help. I want to put something on that will mainly allow me to read PDF's I possess, keep notes and if I could, even write on the PDFs. But it's got to be all on the SD card, I don't want to flash my nook. I figure there's something that fits this description, I could just use a little help pointing me in the right direction.
I'm still learning a lot about all this Android business. Including the market place and such. I'm very new to all this. Thank you everyone.
That's exactly why i FIRST got my NC - just for PDF. About a day later i started hacking it but that's beside the point ;-)
NC's stock PDf reader is definately nicer than kindle (ha ha) but leaves a lot to be desired. I tried umpteen readers, but by FAR the best is ezPDF (it is a pay for app, but really, for a couple of bucks). the only issue is that default is fullscreen which nixes the soft buttons (but then again you only need these to get out of reading a file), and this behavior can be altered in the settings, or you can use softkeys (which really you need anyways for other naught fullscreen apps)
I have a huge library of PDFs that i need to keep synced for work - I use a PC program called viceversa for syncing across desktop, laptop, encypted portable drive etc. I also use this program in combination with SAMBA on the NC to sync PDFs between my PC and the NC over wireless. This preserves folder structure and everything, It's a beautiful seamless solution.
There are now instructions surfacing for transferring CM7 to an SD boot - but with the speed this is changing that might be premature.
I use Nookie Froyoy as my stable backup. It is very easy to transfer apps and settings between the installs using titanium backup and samba (slower, but easier!!!). the disadvanatage of Froyo is that it does not work on anything bigger than an 8gb card, and you lose some space to the system.

I' also a happy user of the Ezpdf reader. You can add notes, underline or cross out portions of the text and save them to the actual pdf. Very stable and easy to use.
I'll have to look at ezPDF then. A friend of mine was showing me a PDF reader that allowed him to write notes on the PDF and I forgot what it was called but it was also on the iPad, not Android. Figures that Android would have an equivalent or at best, it's the same app just ported to both platforms.
The main issue I'm having now is that I'm currently using this image on my nook but I'm finding that I'm having problems with email and GChat (chat doesn't seem to work at all and email is erratic at best)
I like honeycomb but it seems like it's still not quite ready for prime time. Plus the one SD build available (This one) Hasn't been updated in a couple weeks, not that it needs to be, but I had problems with it as well.
In general, I like the idea of a Nook color running custom android software but I'm still new to all of this, period, so I'm stumbling over a lot of things.
Hopefully the CM7 I've been reading about will come with a SD version I can test drive soon.
I use the same SD bootable image with no problem whatsoever. Very stable [and fast if you use the overclocked kernel-1.1Ghz is fine]. Email works without problem though I haven't tried GChat yet.
Btw be sure to try RepliGo Reader too. It's a bit faster than the Ezpdf but lacks the nice interface.
Hi All,
Devs and Members,
I have recently purchased the NC for my wife as a plain ol' e-reader, but after reading about rooting and all the cool stuff you can do with it I have been testing it out on the NC we have. I have to say I am impressed, not bad for buying the NC for $200 off of Craigslist. SO after reading for days on this awesome forum, I took a leap an jump right into rooting the NC using auto-nooter 3.0.0. After a few days of messing with around with it, I installed Nookie Froyo 6.8 emm 3 last night. WOW what a difference it is now compared to when we just got it. I havent had any issues with it, but if there is any opinions or advice on what apps to install next or what should I try next.....please feel free to leave me some comments. I will happily try it out and post some feed back as well as giving you thanks for your thanks meters!!!
Thanks In Advance
Ray.
Well now that you no longer have any of the NC B&N Apps I suggest getting some eReader Apps.
-Nook App (If you want Nook Books, but Magazines and Kid Books won't work)
-Kindle App (If you have Kindle Books or Mobi books)
-Aldiko App (For Reading PDFs and EPUB, also supports Adobe DRM so you can get Library eBooks)
-Titanium Backup App & Buy the Pro Key (For Batch Backup/Restore of Apps and Settings in case an App update brakes an App or you Switched ROMs)
That's a Good Start.

HI,
The NC is my first real eBook reader - and one of the most useful/interesting
apps is an opensource PC/MAC program Calibre - and eBook library management
utility. It will download covers, reviews and convert many formats. It will also
d/l to your device etc. See: http://calibre-ebook.com/
There is a (paid) app in the library that can link to Calibre as well: "Calibre Library",
but you can also use other tools with Calibre to get your eBooks onto device.
Not mentioned above is FBreader, another eBook reader app. which has a syncing
tool available on the market: FBSync, to keep bookmarks and books in sync - useful
when you are trying different ROMs.
ROM: Cyanogenmod7 (Gingerbread) nightlies work very well for me.
I use Button Savior as my soft key application, it has worked well for me. The
on screen buttons are quiet reading in bed at night.
I bought Repligo for PDF reading, the text reflow seems to work 'ok' for me, but
NC is not an ideal PDF reader.

You know I am pretty interested in this Cyanogenmod7 but does it work well? are the devs still ironing out some wrinkles with this ROM? Gingerbread....so this is android 2.3? Is there a way to speed up the NC......maybe overclock?!?!?
HI,
Yes Cyanogenmod 7 works well, even though they haven't released the stable
final release yet. Weak areas are video playback and battery life. Both sound like
they will improve. The Phiremod version based on CM7 is a bit easier.
There are over-clock kernels for all versions of Nook Android, see:

the CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) ROM comes with an overclocked Kernel, once you start it up you can go into their options and up it to 925mhz, which makes this thing run GREAT! Also, battery life isn't bad. If you use it mainly as a reading device (meaning wifi off, bluetooth off, screen fairly bright), it will last you I'd say 8 hours MINIMUM, if you're doing other things, I'd still say it'll last you 6 hours (this, of course, is actual usage time. I only charge mine very other day or every 3 days)
I love Aldiko and it is my preferred reader. The problem is epub is not as popular as it once was. I've actually heard that many amazon books do NOT have DRM and, therefore, can be easily converted to ePub via Calibre. Check out my full post (and ever growing post) about the Nook as an eBook reader in the App's and Themes forum.
Also, B&N has said that they are working on making the Nook app better to include magazine support among other things.
OK, so today I am going to flash the internal memory and install CyanogenMod 7. Is it safe to just overwrite the nookie froyo 0.6.8 I have installed or must I first bring the nook back to system default, then root it again and then install CyanogenMod 7? So any ideas which mod to install, or should I say which one has the least quirks to fix....lol If there is an easy step by step guide anyone can recommend I will go ahead and review before making the jump
Thanks again everyone....truly a great site when your lost in the clouds!!

Flash it right over it, no big deal. Just make sure to follow the directions and do a full system wipe from inside CWM. I also throw my vote in that CM7 is great. I never read mazagines or newspapers from BN so the standard nook app off the market works great. Also, make sure to get the gapps zip because you will need to flash that after the nightly if you want to have the google market.
cyanogen wiki: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
A really easy way to get this process going is to use the following bootable CWM SD card, load the zips on there and flash away : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
Thanks For the links "very informative" a well written guide. But no instructions for windows install....I mean is it the same as installing nookie froyo 0.6.8? Just burn on the sd card, turn off the nook color, and insert to sd card?

If you go the route of using a live CWM sd card, you make it the same way you make the original SD to root the nook, I think it's winimage or something along those lines as the windows program to make it. Just make sure you download the correct CWM for that SD card size.
I'll try and condense the steps as best as possible, but please read all the guides linked to get more information
1. Download the newest Cyanogen nightly from the website I posted, download the newest google apps zip, and download the correct CWM live SD card for the size of the card you're using
2. On windows use Win32DiskImage to create a live CWM mod sd
3. Place the nightly.zip and gapps.zip on the sd card
4.turn off nc, place the sd in nc, when you turn it on it will boot into cwm
5. use CWM to wipe the data on the NC
5. Choose install zip from sd card
6. install nightly zip
7. install gapps zip
turn off nc, when you turn it back on you're on cm7
also this is a link to the gapps

UPDATE!!
Well installed CM7 nightly from 3/26, installed GAPPS, and also installed the updates OC Kernel w/fixed IO Pref. and it works awesome.....overclocked to 1100mhz and its way faster than when I first got it!!! Amazing.
Is there anyway to FORCE the apps to use the MicroSD memory instead of the Internal storage?
It seems every app I've installed ( Dropbox, Google Docs, Evernote, etc) uses the internal memory. I have a 32GB MicroSD that seems to be useless right now. I tried moving all the apps to SD, but they still use the Internal Memory to store cache/files
I have yet to see a fix for this as well. The way I work around this is if the app saves files to the internal storage there is usually a setting in the settings menu that will allow you to change where it saves files. For instance with the TapeRecorder app. It automatically saves files to the sdcard (which Motorola stupidly named the internal storage for). I go to the settings and change the "sdcard" to "sdcard-ext", then it works!
For the time being, you can use the SD-EXT microsd card for music, videos, pictures, TiBU backups, downloads, etc., but in some cases you need to change some settings to do so. Apps cannot be installed on the external microsd card for now and you should make sure you 'move to phone' any apps which are check marked in the 'media' area or you are subject to losing them.
Sorry this next generation android phone just like Droid X it has dedicated app memory. That memory is used strictly for those apps. U can put 500 apps and not run out of room. SD card is used for media music movies etc

Is this why When I selected "Move to Media Area" the application shortcut disappears from the "All Apps" menu?
I moved 2 games to the "Media Area" and now they are gone... they are still installed, but I have no way of accessing them. (I know they are still installed because when I went to reinstall, it said something about it replacing an app thats already install)
After researching more, and fumbling through the phone I discovered that Motorola has deemed the 8GB of Internal memory as an SDCard.
Another FAIL for Motorola, and I doubt there will ever be a fix for this. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
Stated on the Motorola Forums:
Folks, it's the storage naming system in Android. If you go to any forum for any phone with internal and external memory you'll see the same complaints. There are multiple threads about it here.
Even though in Motorola's file manager you see "internal phone memory" and "SD Card", the internal memory is actually "sdcard" and the external is "sdcard-ext". Like I said, it's like this on every brand of phone with this set up.
So, what's happening is the apps are saving to the internal memory because it is, in fact, the SD card. Motorola has tried to remedy this confusion by discontinuing to say "move to SD" and instead now calls it "Move to Media area".
And no, your external SD is not useless. You can still set your photos from the camera to save directly to your external, you can still put music and movies and all kinds of media on your external and your phone will see them just fine. This is why there is a 16GB card included with your phone, so you can use it for media and if you want to move your apps off of the system memory to save space you move it to the 8GB internal area. Of course 8GB is still plenty of space for apps and other media as well

EDIT: BFirebird101 stated this to, I don't know why, but when I was scrolling it passed over his post. Didn't mean to restate what he said.
I've been *****ing about this problem for weeks and nobody seems to care, and it also seems to not bother anybody either.
Its a crock of sh1t. Yea you can save media files on the real SD card, but how many apps actually find them? Smooth move Motofùckingrola!
Fortunately with some coaxing and about a month of messing around, DoubleTwist can find media files on sdcard-ext. Its about the only worthy music player that can.

The Stock Music App seems to find the music files just fine on the MicroSD (just add some to try) and the Gallery Finds the Pictures. But I don't give a damn about Music or Pictures.
I have 123MB of the "Internal Memory" (SDCard) left - after I loaded all my work documents (spreadsheets, powerpoints, etc) & E-books. Right now I have to Move the file from the SDcard (InternalMemory) to the SDCard-Ext(MicroSD) after I've edit it and reuploaded it to Google Docs, then if I want to Edit it agian, I have to move it back to the SDCard(Internal Memory) Just so Google Docs will see it again.
Stock? That's okay, I'll pass. I froze those apps with TiBackup.

i use videovault and when i pulled my video vault folder from my old backup and loaded it to the external SD, the VideoVault did not find them. There is no way i will load 4GB of videos into my Internal 8GB card just so i can haz my pronz!
What I noticed is this seems to be very similar to how the Xoom and Honeycomb handles sdcards and internal storage (minus the fact that we still cant write to sdcards on stock honeycomb....) so it could be Motorola setup the phone this way for a smoother migration to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out?
If ICS looks anything like the "leaked" video then ill pass.
It seems that MOTOROLA Android devices are the only ones with the MicroSD issues.
I have an Asus Transformer android tablet that has absolutely NO trouble at all when it come to read/write access of the MicroSD.
Motorola seems to fudge everything up. But verizon doesnt off any better phones (IMO)
You would think with all the Smart/Nerdy People on this site, someone would come up with a way to Rename the partitions Motorola has setup.
If it was just possible to rename the "SDCard-Ext" To "SDCard" ...
The reason you have no issue is Asus did a hack mod to get the SD card to work. Moto did the same on European xooms but on USA version its a google product there fore moto has no control on software manipulation. As for apps to SD card there is no need the device has dedicated app storage stritctly for apps.

Yes, but do you mean the size of the apk itself, the running RAM overhead, etc.?
If I had to guess I would suppose it was the resident reader designed for the device. Readers with more capabilities and bells and whistles would most likely consume more resources. I've only used the resident reader and the Kindle app and find them both about the same as far as performance (maybe the Kindle is a little sluggish on page changes and the text seems sort of spidery). I tried Cool Reader once but it just had way too many options for me to even want to think about.
I agree with you. Resident reader in Nook is very good one.
It has (probably) only one disadvantage.
When i end (discontinue) reading of a book, i cannot turn off the app.
It hasn't "exit" function and continue to run in memory listing...
I personally use the modified version of Cool Reader mentioned here. This version of Cool Reader at least has an "Exit" option in multiple places. I use this on my Nook Glowlight Plus. I have yet to try it on my old Simple Touches, but perhaps I will try that today. If I do, I will report back on my success (or failure).
UPDATE: The version of Cool Reader linked to in this post will not install on a Nook Simple Touch or Simple Touch with Glowlight. Apparently it requires a higher version of Android.
I do switch back to the resident (stock) reader for large books, like Bibles or collections. Cool Reader is much too slow when reading book over 1500 "pages" or with very many notes (links) in the text. I am not sure if this is because of the amount of memory it takes up, or because of how it handles links.
I tried to re-configure ReaderRMSDK.apk, using mergesmali, provided by RenateNST and these instruments from her page :
/system/app/ReaderRMSDK.apk
ReaderMainView.smali – dictionary lookup of word
ReaderActivity.smali – allow back key on reader
Products.smali †allows "More" button to work with any book
ReaderCommonUIConstants.smali – sensible font sizes
After this i created new key for the app, using keytool and signed it. At the end did 'zipalign'.
Everthing was successfully, but when trying to "install -r the newReaderRMSDK" thru adb, i receive error message
[install parse failed, unexpected extension]
rm for -f failed, read-only file system...
What is the reason?
Any opinions ?
Did anyone modified ReaderRMSDK, using Renate's tools ?
Someone did modified ReaderRMSDK.apk using the tools, provided by RenateNST ?
