Hi All,
Devs and Members,
I have recently purchased the NC for my wife as a plain ol' e-reader, but after reading about rooting and all the cool stuff you can do with it I have been testing it out on the NC we have. I have to say I am impressed, not bad for buying the NC for $200 off of Craigslist. SO after reading for days on this awesome forum, I took a leap an jump right into rooting the NC using auto-nooter 3.0.0. After a few days of messing with around with it, I installed Nookie Froyo 6.8 emm 3 last night. WOW what a difference it is now compared to when we just got it. I havent had any issues with it, but if there is any opinions or advice on what apps to install next or what should I try next.....please feel free to leave me some comments. I will happily try it out and post some feed back as well as giving you thanks for your thanks meters!!!
Thanks In Advance
Ray.
Well now that you no longer have any of the NC B&N Apps I suggest getting some eReader Apps.
-Nook App (If you want Nook Books, but Magazines and Kid Books won't work)
-Kindle App (If you have Kindle Books or Mobi books)
-Aldiko App (For Reading PDFs and EPUB, also supports Adobe DRM so you can get Library eBooks)
-Titanium Backup App & Buy the Pro Key (For Batch Backup/Restore of Apps and Settings in case an App update brakes an App or you Switched ROMs)
That's a Good Start.

HI,
The NC is my first real eBook reader - and one of the most useful/interesting
apps is an opensource PC/MAC program Calibre - and eBook library management
utility. It will download covers, reviews and convert many formats. It will also
d/l to your device etc. See: http://calibre-ebook.com/
There is a (paid) app in the library that can link to Calibre as well: "Calibre Library",
but you can also use other tools with Calibre to get your eBooks onto device.
Not mentioned above is FBreader, another eBook reader app. which has a syncing
tool available on the market: FBSync, to keep bookmarks and books in sync - useful
when you are trying different ROMs.
ROM: Cyanogenmod7 (Gingerbread) nightlies work very well for me.
I use Button Savior as my soft key application, it has worked well for me. The
on screen buttons are quiet reading in bed at night.
I bought Repligo for PDF reading, the text reflow seems to work 'ok' for me, but
NC is not an ideal PDF reader.

You know I am pretty interested in this Cyanogenmod7 but does it work well? are the devs still ironing out some wrinkles with this ROM? Gingerbread....so this is android 2.3? Is there a way to speed up the NC......maybe overclock?!?!?
HI,
Yes Cyanogenmod 7 works well, even though they haven't released the stable
final release yet. Weak areas are video playback and battery life. Both sound like
they will improve. The Phiremod version based on CM7 is a bit easier.
There are over-clock kernels for all versions of Nook Android, see:

Aldiko works fine. It supports Zooming too.

the CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) ROM comes with an overclocked Kernel, once you start it up you can go into their options and up it to 925mhz, which makes this thing run GREAT! Also, battery life isn't bad. If you use it mainly as a reading device (meaning wifi off, bluetooth off, screen fairly bright), it will last you I'd say 8 hours MINIMUM, if you're doing other things, I'd still say it'll last you 6 hours (this, of course, is actual usage time. I only charge mine very other day or every 3 days)
I love Aldiko and it is my preferred reader. The problem is epub is not as popular as it once was. I've actually heard that many amazon books do NOT have DRM and, therefore, can be easily converted to ePub via Calibre. Check out my full post (and ever growing post) about the Nook as an eBook reader in the App's and Themes forum.
Also, B&N has said that they are working on making the Nook app better to include magazine support among other things.
OK, so today I am going to flash the internal memory and install CyanogenMod 7. Is it safe to just overwrite the nookie froyo 0.6.8 I have installed or must I first bring the nook back to system default, then root it again and then install CyanogenMod 7? So any ideas which mod to install, or should I say which one has the least quirks to fix....lol If there is an easy step by step guide anyone can recommend I will go ahead and review before making the jump
Thanks again everyone....truly a great site when your lost in the clouds!!

Flash it right over it, no big deal. Just make sure to follow the directions and do a full system wipe from inside CWM. I also throw my vote in that CM7 is great. I never read mazagines or newspapers from BN so the standard nook app off the market works great. Also, make sure to get the gapps zip because you will need to flash that after the nightly if you want to have the google market.
cyanogen wiki: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
A really easy way to get this process going is to use the following bootable CWM SD card, load the zips on there and flash away : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
Thanks For the links "very informative" a well written guide. But no instructions for windows install....I mean is it the same as installing nookie froyo 0.6.8? Just burn on the sd card, turn off the nook color, and insert to sd card?

If you go the route of using a live CWM sd card, you make it the same way you make the original SD to root the nook, I think it's winimage or something along those lines as the windows program to make it. Just make sure you download the correct CWM for that SD card size.
I'll try and condense the steps as best as possible, but please read all the guides linked to get more information
1. Download the newest Cyanogen nightly from the website I posted, download the newest google apps zip, and download the correct CWM live SD card for the size of the card you're using
2. On windows use Win32DiskImage to create a live CWM mod sd
3. Place the nightly.zip and gapps.zip on the sd card
4.turn off nc, place the sd in nc, when you turn it on it will boot into cwm
5. use CWM to wipe the data on the NC
5. Choose install zip from sd card
6. install nightly zip
7. install gapps zip
turn off nc, when you turn it back on you're on cm7
also this is a link to the gapps

Your help is truly appreciated!
UPDATE!!
Well installed CM7 nightly from 3/26, installed GAPPS, and also installed the updates OC Kernel w/fixed IO Pref. and it works awesome.....overclocked to 1100mhz and its way faster than when I first got it!!! Amazing.

So working with the CM7 nightly builds and the nook app for android, I'm struck by how much I'm finding I like the nook app better than the nookcolor home and reader. I can read my bought books, sideload books and everything else. On top of that I get pageturn animations that don't exist on the stock reader. The font selection is a bit more limited and some of the interface doesn't seem as refined, but it really doesn't seem that much of a tradeoff.
Anybody else running CM7? What are your impressions of the nook app?
I use the nook app on my phone, so that is what I was already used to. It did run sluggish on the NC the first time I used it, but I realoaded it and it is fine now.. mainly slow page turns.
does the Nook App have the same features as the Home one - Notes, Look Up, Highlight? what are the real limitations comparing to stock? that's the only thing that stops me from upgrade now, the whole reader integration on stock.
Does the nook app require you to import your sideloaded books like aldiko or is it like the nook home, and uses a file manager to locate books?
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
I only did a quick try using the Nook App, but the one major downside I noticed is no support for magazine subscriptions. However, not much of a problem for those of you who don't have them. Also the look up, notes, highlighting etc built into the NC stock aren't available in the app. Everyone is entitiled to their opinion, but the only thing I consider better on the Nook App are the page turn animations and that really doesn't improve the use as much as the additional support and features available on the stock app. That's why I'm waiting for CM7 sd image, guess I'll have to stick with my stock emmc for reading and nookie froyo sd for tablet features until them.
I wish you could tap to turn the page in the app (or am I doing something wrong?).
With the Android Nook App (not the Nook Color Stock Reader/Library) - is there a way to move sideloaded books to the "Library" ?
Or do they just remain as "My Files".

I am able to tap to turn the page.
I like the look and feel of the stock Nook Home but I definitely prefer the performance increases in CM7 vs stock Eclair.
I much prefer the Market Nook app. In fact when I first used the nook my wife commented on how "slow" the stock reader went through pages.
I don't really use the nook app either way myself (prefer Amazon), but I must admit that without the Market Nook app I couldn't tell people I have a tablet because the first thing they ask for (to demonstrate) is page turn animations. iPad set the bar there, and B&N out of the box didn't deliver....
I am having a problem importing epub files into the Nook app I am running phiremod nook V4.1 rom. I copied a epub file into the my files folder but it doesn't show up in the apps my files.
I don't really get the page turn animations? What's the point? Doesn't it slow down page turns?
I used the stock rooted setup for a few days, and then installed rom along with Nook App.
I didnt like the Nook App because of the lack of magazine/newspaper support.
The stock Nook setup is better IMO, it just feels better overall in terms of really getting the most out of your nookcolor. Magazines, newspapers, etc..
Oh and turn page animation? really? LOL c'mon ppl. I'm going to pay an extra $300 for page turn feature??
Is there anyway to use the stock nook setup with a custom rom?
"Also the look up, notes, highlighting etc built into the NC stock aren't available in the app."
I just tried these things and they work fine in the app. It would be nice to have the dictionary built in but hey, I have the dicitonary.com app if I really need to know. (On CM7)

How are you getting the app to work on the nightly builds? I am able to get in the app click stuff but if i download a book it just says file not supported. Also I had a couple of books on my sd card and moved them to the books folder for the app and it doesnt work either. Would you mins telling me how you got it to work? Thanks
I admit that of the Nook App for Android versus the Nook App for Stock that I much preferred the stock one.
But I really love the Nook as a tablet rather than a simple eReader, so I cancelled my magazine subscriptions this last week rather than having to go back to stock to read them.
b&n, if you actually read these forums, PLEASE give us magazine and newspaper subscriptions with the Nook for Android app, I promise that I will subscribe if you do!!
The Nook app won't download the "Read to me" children's books I bought. Otherwise I'd stop using the ROM on SD.
I too like using the Nook App on CM7 but has anyone figured out how to get the covers to show up for sideloaded content? Most of my stuff is copied over from my Calibre library, all covers show up fine in Aldiko but in the Nook app, no covers. Not a big deal really but just thought I would throw it out there in case someone has a fix.

It gives you that nostalgic feeling of yonder days I know we are trying to save trees here but some of us still want that feeling of flipping through pages.
RE
I figured it out..
Hi folks. Yes, I'm another newb but not quite an idiot, and I would love your advice. We've got a new NC for a teenager who loves books but would also appreciate videos and some applications. It's just out of shrink wrap.
From my preliminary reading it sounds as if (a) only NookieFroyo provides Flash support including Flash video, and (b) B&N may be pushing Froyo shortly as stock ROM.
1. Is there any likelihood that B&N will or could in some way use this update (or any update) to prevent subsequent rooting or other hacks?
2. Are all the various mods reversible? Our concern is being able to, at worst case, revert to stock in order to have all original Nook functionality restored, including brick-and-mortar store compatibility (e.g., in-store borrowing) and especially warranty service.
3. Regarding the B&N store, the AutoNooter threads recommend registering with B&N before beginning any changes. Is this necessary, and/or absolutely required, and why? If you register and then root, will that allow you to purchase books, whereas you would not otherwise have been able to?
4. Is there a substantive difference (look, feel, or function) between the process of buying books on the original stock NC versus installing the Nook app for Android on a rooted or modded NC?
5. If one "merely" roots the device and doesn't install CM or NookieFroyo or other ROMs, can one still install apps at will? I'd be fine with sideloading if no Market app were functional.
6. My impression is that the stock NC supports very few applications but that with the upcoming upgrade B&N may be featuring a store. Is it accurate to say that in its stock form the NC is not (yet) much more than a book reader?
7. Regarding AutoNooter, it seems to have forked based on the 1.1 B&N update. Is it better to start at 1.0.1 with the original AutoNooter or to allow the 1.1 upgrade and use the GMPower fork?
8. Is an AutoNooter or other rooting procedure required before CM is applied? I assume so, but only ask because the CM procedure at Cyanogenmod.com (I can't post links yet) doesn't have a rooting step. Maybe it's the case that AutoNooter is for rooting the existing B&N image but that other ROMs can be independently booted from SD? (Told ya I'm a newb.)
9. What, if any, of the stock device's capabilities are lost (reversibly or irreversibly) by rooting and/or modding? (One I wonder about is in-store "free" reading at B&N locations.)
Obviously I'm all over the map, and I apologize. Just trying to figure out the best approach to make the kid happy (e-reading, Youtube, and web browsing would probably suffice) and not end up with a funked out device that can't be used or supported for its original purpose.
Thanks very much in advance.
1. Is there any likelihood that B&N will or could in some way use this update (or any update) to prevent subsequent rooting or other hacks?
To be honest, maybe. But, once you autonooter or install a custom rom B&N cannot OTA update your nook.
2. Are all the various mods reversible? Our concern is being able to, at worst case, revert to stock in order to have all original Nook functionality restored, including brick-and-mortar store compatibility (e.g., in-store borrowing) and especially warranty service.
Yes, there are flashable images that will revert the nook back to out-of-the-box state. look through the Dev forum.
3. Regarding the B&N store, the AutoNooter threads recommend registering with B&N before beginning any changes. Is this necessary, and/or absolutely required, and why? If you register and then root, will that allow you to purchase books, whereas you would not otherwise have been able to?
I think it's something to do with being able to connect to google's services. yes it's necessary when you stay with eclaire, not wirh froyo/CM7/honeycomb. yes, the store works with rooted eclaire.
4. Is there a substantive difference (look, feel, or function) between the process of buying books on the original stock NC versus installing the Nook app for Android on a rooted or modded NC?
you use the store the same way on a rooted-stock nook as you would on a stock one. I don't know how the look feel or function is for the b&n app, I have an original nook for reading.
5. If one "merely" roots the device and doesn't install CM or NookieFroyo or other ROMs, can one still install apps at will? I'd be fine with sideloading if no Market app were functional.
The market works with rooted-stock, but you'll eventually want to install CM7 or Honeycomb, trust me.
6. My impression is that the stock NC supports very few applications but that with the upcoming upgrade B&N may be featuring a store. Is it accurate to say that in its stock form the NC is not (yet) much more than a book reader?
A stock NC is pretty useless for anything other than reading/web surfing
7. Regarding AutoNooter, it seems to have forked based on the 1.1 B&N update. Is it better to start at 1.0.1 with the original AutoNooter or to allow the 1.1 upgrade and use the GMPower fork?
Auto-nooter 3 works just fine for 1.1.0 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942424

No, you do not need to root to install Froyo/CM7/HC. The nook is hard wired to boot the SD-card first if able. You can go straight from stock to CM7 with one flashed micro SD-card.
9. What, if any, of the stock device's capabilities are lost (reversibly or irreversibly) by rooting and/or modding? (One I wonder about is in-store "free" reading at B&N locations.)
This I don't know. I don't use the NC as a reader at all. My Original nook takes care of that.
Hope this helps. Happy modding.
I think all of your questions are easily answered by the FroYo SD card image. You can keep the Nook stock for reading books and warranty purposes and if you want the extras, stick the SD card in. Basically, if you haven't come across this one yet, the NC will boot off of the SD card first, then internal second. So if there's an SD card with a bootable image, you're up and running in froyo. If no SD card you're booting stock. It's a beautiful thing I tell you
So it really is that easy? It will just boot off the SD card out without any modification? Amazing.
That's the kind of thing I'd be worried about them changing or locking (vis a vis my question #1 above). My anxiety is whether to hack NOW to prevent future lockdown, or try to hack LATER after the authorized Froyo push.
Obviously the hacker community has made the NC a very hot item, but if the history of every other repurposed device (video games, DVRs, etc.) is any precedent B&N may not see it as valuable to encourage or allow it to continue.
Edit: But I'm also seeing reports that you do need to root the device in order to boot off the SD?
Thank you for the feedback, woot1524 and devis.
Running any version of android off of an sd card is EXTREMELY slow. You can reverse any hack root or mod made to the nook.. as long as the mod isnt physical ie. You scratch your name into the back of the nook no teenager will want to wait for the time it will take to run it off the sd card.. theyll just get frustrated and give up.

Your answer for number 1 and 8 apply to each other. Since the Nook is hardwired to boot from uSD, there will almost surely be rooted ROMS for it. Hope that helps clarify this point.
Oh yea, and as far as what to do for a teen...
I would go with Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 eMMC. Download and have the image to return to stock ready to go, just in case. And then be patient for when CM7 is finally cooked.
Be prepared to do most of the tinkering with NF to get it right BEFORE you give it to your teen. Once you get everything working(market, youtube, etc), then it should be ready for him/her. I have been using NF for a bit now, and once I got everything working it is great. read the forums here for a bit and you will get an idea of just how good these babies can be.
be prepared for the usual ....it's not the Xoom, an ipad, etc arguments and complaints...it's a teen you are dealing with(basing from my experiences only, with my daughter...aren't they great?).

Not for me. I find it quite fast and very usable. No issues whatsoever with it being slow.
One thing to do is to install LCD Density and change the screen density to 200 or 220 for added smoothness. It doesnt change the resolution, just the size of items on the screen to bigger and everything flows together very nicely.
The SD card 0.6.8 is my daily driver lately, I use it for work and personal email, news, reading, games, Slingbox watching... it's great. not sure what is this slowness you're talking about.

Not for me. I find it quite fast and very usable. No issues whatsoever with it being slow.
One thing to do is to install LCD Density and change the screen density to 200 or 220 for added smoothness. It doesnt change the resolution, just the size of items on the screen to bigger and everything flows together very nicely.
The SD card 0.6.8 is my daily driver lately, I use it for work and personal email, news, reading, games, Slingbox watching... it's great. not sure what is this slowness you're talking about.[/QUOTE

That is what turned me off of froyo for Nook

SOD nope... not at all. Have yet to experience it. WIFI disconnects, yes... well, mostly the WIFI dance when it switches itself from off to on and to off and back to on again. But a reboot fixes it, so no biggie. There is actually a fix for it but me being the lazy bum that I am haven't gotten around to fixing it. And i'm reluctant to change to the newer image because this one runs so well why fix what ain't broke.

Btw, not all sd cards are alike. The ones who are complaining about Froyo running slowly off the sd card are probably not using a fast enough sd card. I suggest getting the Transcend 8 gb class 6 microSDHC card. I'm getting 13 MB/s write and 15 MB/s read speeds which is above class 10 specs.
I'm still in slight shock that you can dual boot without making ANY changes at all to the device, without so much as a BIOS tweak.
So it sounds as if you could even grab the display model or a friend's device, boot it off your SD to use Android for a while, and then just hand it back COMPLETELY unchanged, with all original functionality and data intact. That's just too easy!
The gist I'm getting is that even if B&N root locks the internal storage's OS in future updates, it's unlikely the SD card boot option will go away?
Thanks to everyone for all the feedback. (I ran out of Thanks credit.)
I have been trying to install CM7 on my NC, but I keep getting assert failed error. I can install Nookie Froyo without issue and restoring stock. I am guessing that I am doing install from CWR/SDCard all wrong, as when I use SDCards that I write with Win32Diskimg it always works fine. My guess is that this is because when istalling from this method, you don't need to worry about the state of your /data and /system.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

hi,
Not sure what you are doing wrong, but I found this post very detailed,
a bit dated now, but should still work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960542&page=16
From your comments below: you do have to reformat several partitions,
CM7 uses a different file system, EXT4. This also requires more recent
CWM versions and different kernel on the recovery boot (follow instructions
in one of the links in the thread above)
Hope this helps,
Peter

Oh for Pete's sake!! I had no idea the install was that involved. I thought you could install directly from CWM 3.0.0.5, I had no idea you had to prepare your SDCard in this manner... and that you had to install market separately. I am glad I asked because I would not have figured this out for myself, especially with the instruction set 16 pages into the thread, I'd have given up long before getting that far.
Thank you very much for your help... I am in the process of doing this... cross your fingers.

Ok! Installed CM7 without a hitch...
I must say, very nice... once I was able to get the instructions for the install and do it the right way it worked first time out. I didn't install the OC Kernel, but I may in the near future.
Does the CM7 Still have issues when going to sleep? Guess I'll find out for myself.
migrax
CM7 doesn't sleep so you will see the battery drop much quicker. Get an app/widget to toggle wifi and this will help preserve your battery while it is "sleeping".
I would also recommend getting one to toggle brightness as well so you can easily set it to whatever is appropriate for your lighting situation at the time.
Wow, I love Playon and Audiogalaxy.
This is the reason I wanted an Android Tablet. I wanted to be able to read books and use video and audio on demand. After I installed Flash 10.2 this thing has become the multimedia machine I wanted.
I am watching Hulu!!!!
Now if I can get some really cool games to run, I will be a happy camper.
Can you recommed an app to toggle wifi? Also I notice that while watching Hulu that the audio is kind of chirping in my headphones. I'll have to see if aI can adjust the audio properties.
Thanks to all for helping me get this far.

HI,
Sounds like you have everything running well!
One tool that I really like is an open source eBook library management
program that runs on PC/MAC - Calibre. It downloads covers, reviews, and will
convert to different ebook formats. There is a paid app in the app store
to access it directly: Calibre Library, or you use Calibre along with Nook as
an external disk drive (or via Dropbox even)

If I have no need to ever return to stock Nook, do I have to do a "nand backup"?

Should I still use this one as recovery? It seems a bit dated?
Thanks for any help.
I have a nook color with stock 1.3 on it. Thinking about rooting it, if I do will I get better web browsing performance?
I tried a nook tablet today and the web browsing experience was night and day. The think was very fast.
If you just root the stock rom, you can at least overclock and/or install different browsers, which should help. If you install CM7 though, you should find a lot more options. I realized I was having some wifi-drop problems (not playing nice with a hidden SSID), but I'm pretty happy with the browsing experience on CM7 now.

If I boot CM7 off an SD card will it run slower than just flashing it over the nook software? I feel like it probably will but I don't really want to lose the BNN software.
If you will use a Sandisk class 2 or 4 sd card, I think you will be pleased at the performance.. then you can always decide to replace the stock BN rom if you are sold on CM7.
I run CM Stable 7.1 on a class 4 SANDISK.
It runs really well. I have no Wifi issues on the stable release. I use DOLPHIN HD for browsing.
I also run CM nightly 253 (just for playing around) on a class 4 SANDISK and I have wifi issues.
I was running CM7 n202 off of an 8Gb class 4 Sandisk, and recently switched to n253 from the internal memory. There was a reasonable improvement to speed, although more with navigating the OS than with web-browsing. I never much used the stock browser (only while in the store shopping) and I've also switched over from DolphinHD to Opera - they're both good browsers and pretty snappy, but I'm using Opera pretty exclusively now - it takes a tad bit longer to load on the first launch, but I like the reflow and zooming better, and it /is/ really fast.
The other option (which is what I did) is to copy the stock rom to an SD card and flash CM onto the Nand. It depends on which one you plan to use more.
I wanted the tablet portion more, but I still wanted the ability to view DRM restricted ePub/PDF files.
Any good guides out there to boot CM7 off a SD card? I remember seeing the thread before but now can't seem to find it.
Thanks guys!

Is there any way to get flash on opera on CM7? I cant seem to figure it out.
And whats the best way to read books? I guess I cant use the stock BNN software without taking the SD card out like I could when I had it auto nootered so should I just dl the nook app on the market I guess?

Depends. If you have your own Epub files then Aldiko is good. If you bought B&N books then you can download the Nook app from Market. If you mischievously bought Kindle books then get the Kindle App.
As for Flash in Opera, I don't use Opera so I don't know, however what you can do is get this App(Choose Browser) and when you get to page with flash Choose "Share Page/URL" and then select "Choose Browser" to open the page with the Stock browser.

If you're running CM7 off uSD you can hold the "n" button while it is booting... it will bring up the boot menu... select eMMC... "Normal" boot and "Boot Now" it will boot you into stock on eMMC... you can read your books with B&N stock firmware and reader

If I remember correctly there is an option for flash in the standard options in Opera, You have to have Flash Player installed separately though.

I find the Nook App to be superior to Stock (with a slight gripe about categorizing sideloaded ePub format books). When you put CM7 on your Nook, you need to then download the Nook app from the marketplace (free). You enter your account info and then it will sync all of your purchased books from B&N. The Nook and Aldiko reader apps are better than the stock Nook reader app (nook page turn animations, both have more brightness settings which is great for night reading, Aldiko seems easier to load ePub books and offers more bookshelf customizations)
Hi All,
First post! I just got a Nook Color from the Overstock sale and bought two as gifts for my mom and gf. I figured I'll learn all the tricks and how-to's on mine and be able to help them Christmas day. So far, I got myself a SanDisk 16GB Class 4, followed koopakid's awesome tutorial and have successfully installed the latest RC version of CM7. I ran into a bit of trouble getting the Google Apps to install, (just wound up manually adding Gmail from marketplace), and am really happy. But I have a few questions from where to go from here...
After getting CM7 off the SD card, how can I add files to the additional 15GB or so of unused data? And is it possible to do so without constantly removing my card?
I thought I read somewhere to "lock your screen" or something to prevent lag, but what does that mean?
Is it possible to download an app on my PC and install it to the Nook?
What's the best app/settings to tweak a rooted Nook?
I don't mean to be "that guy", but I didn't see a general help thing and don't understand some of the stuff I was reading earlier. Any help and advice is appreciated!

Yes, just plug your Nook into your computer via USB and then select the option in your status bar to mount as USB. It should pop up on your computer as 2 different drives one for your SD card and one for EEMC.

Yes, just download the apk file and then either transfer it over and use a file explorer to install or just email it to yourself/use dropbox.

I'm not really sure what you want here but I would suggest getting a new browser such as Opera or Dolphin first. Another good app to have is Nook Screen Recalibrate for when your screen get a little wonky.
For reading I use Aldiko.
For watch videos I use Mobo Player
And if you haven't yet download tge Amazon Appstore for a free app every day.

Thank you KK! I'm definitely going to trying moving stuff on there once I get home! So far, the only thing I did was go through the Android Marketplace to get the Dolphin Browser earlier, but was hesitant on any of the other apps like e-Reader stuff, (heard great things about Aldiko), music, and videos.
As far as that lock screen, I have to find that post. It know it mentioned something about the screen behaving laggy or something if not locked when putting it down. That or I could be way off and misread it.
One last question: I got 2 more Nooks as presents and don't want to open them, but would it be possible to follow the same basic install using SD on my Nook and simply including those pre-made cards in the unopened Nooks or does this stuff have to be done Nook by Nook so to speak?

Yes, the cards are not specific to one Nook so you can go ahead and make them before.

So… I went ahead and tried some tweaking. And now I think my stupid is showing.
I was browsing some apps and figured I’d give the Nook Color Tweak one a go since it’s specifically made for rooted NC’s. After I downloaded & installed it, I noticed I can’t overclock the CPU, (heard it’s stable even at 1GHz) or enable USB Host Mode (so I can drag-n-drop eBooks and app files while the NC is connected to a PC). Apparently I need the “Dalingrin's OC kernel”. And that’s where I got intimidated.
I was thinking about this and I think I’m having two “issues”: 1) I’m not sure how to continue tweaking the NC and 2) since this is my first introduction to Android, I think I need to bang through some tutorials and guides for the OS itself before getting myself overwhelmed with the NC stuff. Time to research…

First off what CM version are you using? Dal's overclock kernel is included in the latest 7.1 stable.
Also, USB host mode is not dragging and dropping enabling its for connecting USB devices like flash drives to the Nook. To enable dragging and dropping on your computer just plug it in via USB and then select the option to mount as USB.

As far as the Kernel, I'm actually using the RC 7.1 from the instructions. Everything I read mentioned that it was included which is a large part of why I'm a bit confused on that stuff.

I'm pretty certain that the kernel was added around nightly 150 whitch is after the RC release. Updating is a pretty simple procedure.

Thanks KK! I did some searching for a nightly and how to flash, but I'm actually thinking about just starting from scratch if only for reference. Since I'm giving 2 as gifts this Christmas, I'd like to have a little handy document & files on a thumbdrive I can follow and get this going. I'm thinking about starting from scratch with a nightly in place of a RC and going from there.
Now I just need to figure a PDF reader that allows me to pinch-zoom.
