Does anyone else's camera do this even when underexposing by -2?
anyone? nice to confirm if it's not right.
I've also noticed issues when taking pictures where there is very low overall light and a single bright light source as well as very bright photos (outdoors with Sun reflection).
The phone seems to have an issue balancing the light exposure. It appears to be software related. I can usually find the happy medium after tapping different areas to find better auto focus/expose areas. Using HDR mode also mitigates this problem, but introduces blur sometimes.
I'm confident it's a software issue that will be resolved.

Digital cameras are inherently god awful at high dynamic range shots. What our eyes see is many levels of awesome better than what a camera can process. Go find a point and shoot and take that same picture and you'll find the same problem. Either it will blow out the light or it will under-expose the frame.
HDR modes are helpful in mitigating this problem, but they're still a cheat.

An Slr would have no problem. Lol

It really depends on how much brighter it is outside than inside. But yeah, SLRs have crazy big pixels so yeah, they tend to be better with dynamic range.

Camera remains my biggest disappointment. Videos good with the high gain mics though but this over exposure or whatever the issue is with light sources ... GRRR

Hey guys, recently i have noticed that on my phone, when taking pictures in low light settings, It has these weird "lines" across the image. Whether the "lines" are horizontal or vertical, they are there.
For example, the images i have uploaded. This one has the horizontal "lines"
I have searched across the net, and I am not able to find any low-light settings with these problems. So... Do you guys think my Captivate has a bad camera? maybe, a bad sensor or something like that :O
P.S. Yes, i know i need a new keyboard xP
I didn't see any lines on that picture
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Its on the bottom of the picture. Its not like a black line but it is like a line of noise x.x
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
It's a bad camera, but it's not just you.
There's a reason why high end phones have LED lights. You can't create light out of nothing.
Wait... so is it a bad unit, or is it normal for the camera in low light conditions?

dude your keyboard is disgusting....i think i would have to wash my hands after using it
on another note....my first phone had a pink dot in all the pics i took, att store exchanged it without a question. no lines, but to me it kinda sounds normal
OP, I took a picture last night and it had the same effect. Disappointing because it was alot worse and it my favorite out of 70. Ugh.
I can't really provide any input on your Q though. I assume mine was just a fluke, but you say it happens every time for you.

Lol, well I still haven't gotten a definite answer x.x is this a problem, or is it normal for the camera in low light conditions? >_>
Btw, if it is pass the 30 days and I go to at&t, will they exchange it, or would have to go through warranty with samsung?

My phone does it too... its normal.

Ah, I see those lines. They are normal even in high end DSLRs. You have to increase the ISO quality, that means use the lowest number say 100. However, when you do this, blur is more obvious.
However, I also noticed that our camera's sensor isn't really good. I tried ISO 100 and timed. I also was not holding the camera. It took a sharp picture but it still produced the noise on dark parts of the image. Taking pictures using DSLRs on ISO 100 doesn't produce those noise. I'm really not expecting too much from this phone since it's got a very small sensor.
Ok. Thanks. My camera lenses was also kind of dirty and I cleaned it and it helped a little. But thanks for all the help

What is everyone's thought of the camera? I've read a couple of articles and they just don't rate the camera well. Thanks for anyone who can give an honest response to whether the camera is just all hype.

In my opinion I don't think it's something to get exciting over. Yes it does perform well in lowlight, but lacks detail in well lit images compared to most other phones. I'd honestly prefer just a regular 13 megapixel camera, but I really don't take many photos so it doesn't bother me much. If I want great images ill take a dedicated camera with me. Besides the lack of detail, I think all the features that it comes with and Zoe is really cool. Once I get my hands on the device ill know if the extra features it carries will be enough for me to forget about the lack of detail in images in well lit images.

Having used it for a few seconds I think the sensor is great, definitely a step in the right direction. The problem is HTC's overly aggressive noise reduction algorithm that smooths over all of the details inherent in the picture. If you could turn it down so there was some more noise/grain I think most people would say that this is the best camera phone sensor on the market besides maybe the Nokia PureView (which I have not seen in person). The dynamic range is seriously point and shoot good and the low light images speak for themselves.

instead of posting "awesome" pictures this phone takes, can we face it that the camera is not one of the best and maybe somebody can help modify some values in order to fix it? if one uses motorola stock camera for example it is obvious that it takes way better pictures than the stock camera our phone comes with, especially in low light environments. thanks!

It's not one of the best and neither has anyone claimed it to be the best. It takes decent quality pictures. And frankly for the price it sells it has
a pretty good performace to cost ratio. If you want bette camera's you should look at HTC One, Xperia Z which have better sensors in them.
Picture quality is mostly dependent on sensor used and not much can be done by changing couple of values here and there.
On a side note, Vic Gundotra has said they are planning something big with camera's. So lets wait and watch what they do.
Have you tried using her mode for low light

Just because you typed [REQ] at the front of your thread doesn't make it any different than the dozen or so camera threads that already exist.

Does anyone feel like Nokia lumia 520 camera in low light conditions is better than Xperia ZR ??
Even though we have 13 megapixel, i somehow feel under low light XZR isnt doing that great :/
13MP
Ye i too am very disappointed with the camera..Compared to my previous 8MP Incredible S and 8MP Sensation this is by far inferior.
can only do 9MP 16:9 otherwise make do with 13MP 4:3 and images are very grainy and there is no sharpness at all. would rather have a lagging shutter with good quality images than lag free with noise. the moment you try to zoom.. that's it the whole image distorts.. for my first xperia i am disappointed and thought sony camera would be far more superior than HTC's.
The camera isn't that bad but I agree it isn't the best considering its meant to be Sony's bread and butter. Low light conditions are not as great and may require you to adjust the settings. I know the xperia t and v has better picture quality but I'm sure this could be fixed in a firmware update much like the xperia z had. If you want bad you should try the nexus 4.

Settings
Manual settings are far better than the superior settings they gave,
How about focusing?
Any suggestions on the settings for better pictures ?
how do u or what are the so called recommended manual settings?
Manual/Automatic
I have tried various options with very slight changes. It just seems the overall quality is average at best. my sony ericsson T650 3.2megapixel camera from years back produced much better photos than this.

noise depends on the ISO setting usually. a higher setting tends to cause more noise. so u cant compare 2 completely different pix unless u know for sure they were taken under the same lighting conditions, same amount of shake while pressing the camera button, etc.. the auto detection feature may sometimes detect the same situation differently. so it would be better if u take pix of the same subject in manual mode with different settings n then compare them.
also, HDR can cause noise coz it has to take 2 pix in different exposure settings. so if ur hand moves by as less as a millimeter in the time frame required by HDR, there will be a considerable amount of noise. try takin a pic of a moving subject in HDR mode n ull c what i mean
I'm on 4.2.2 and I just tried taking a few pictures indoors on superior auto and they look terrible I'm not sure if it improved from the previous firmware. It's like this camera turns itself into vga mode as soon as the sun goes down. These shots made my old galaxy s2 look like the best camera phone around. I'll just have to play with the settings and find what's best for now. Anyone got recommendations for indoor settings?

The camera is just not very good it seems. Funny Sony is doing many of the other flagshipcameras this year for other companies but can't het their own app upp to par...
I found that moto x camera is faster and I can't see any big differences in quality and the camera JB + with punchfilter normally gives a little more nicety. Off cource perfectly Clear (etc) from playstore does also work good
Hopefully they'll do some wonder in the next update...

Excellent in daylight!
I found the camera to be quite exceptional in daytime. The stock camera app processes the photos to increase sharpness. The details while zooming in are good in proper light.
However, the noise increases significantly in low light. The picture is fuzzy when zoomed in.
From my experience, Using the HDR mode is the only way to significantly reduce noise. The "Backlight correction + HDR" mode also works quite well.
Funny thing that the ''Night Mode" gave darker images then normal mode for me.
I just had the best camera experience for night mode shots yet.
I changed the settings to normal with auto flash on and HDR off with EV +1.
The pictures were much sharper but requires you to have a steady hand still it's much better. Got the idea off the Xperia Z forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397058

Maybe it would help....
It seems that funky camera credits goes to Exmor RS sensor which uses a "stacked structure" that layers a pixel section over a circuit section, which removes the need to confine the pixel and circuit section into a tight space that limits the size of each element. By fitting bigger components in the same area, the sensor has a more efficient design that captures a higher quality image. Higher noise too, I'd say.
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201208/12-107E/
Its the same camera as in S4 so it's most of all the driver/hardware behind the sensor that's not very good. Sony's just not very good putting stuff together. I have had a few and none is spectacular. Well see next generation of soft and updates, hopefully they'll put some effort in. To have a bit nicer photos indoor the same approach as in my S4, hdr is working ok.

So what you guys think about the ZR's camera. Is it good or not ?! I plan to buy it next few months but consider more about it first.
Depends on your budget and if U really need a wwaterproof phone I'll presume. The camera is not the best but the phone is nice.

Hello, I thought we should have a topic like other devices do. In general I'm not happy with quality of pictures, so much noise especially indoors, also lack of ios is visible with most shots.

I actually really like the quality of pictures, I previously had a M7, and I can tell you that you really can see the difference between the ultrapixel and the 13MPX of the mini 2. Maybe indoors pictures with low light are a little bit noisy (that's where the ultrapixel goes better, of course), but I wouldn't say it's a problem.
Yeah, the pictures are quite alright, the camera app tends to go crazy for a moment then you get a all white out picture, maybe the problem lies in the fact that I was moving the phone around and it didn't have time to automatically focus and the other stuff it does before I took the pic.
Alright after couple days spent with the phone and ota updated recently I still reckon that pictures quality are far from good. I can't take a still picture all the time, every single picture is moved.
It is slightly better when 2 seconds countdown used.
When anti shake mode used there is a lot strange artifacts that looks awful.
Maybe my hands are shaking a bit more than others but consider that pictures are of still object, when shooting moving object pictures are much worse. Maybe some of you guys have an idea how to set manual mode to get pictures at least off acceptable quality? Many thanks

I am not getting moved photos in my case, i don't understand very well. But I have noticed that you have to leave it on the object 2 seconds before taking the picture, so that it can focus, otherwise sometimes the picture is moved
Can someone post more pictures taken with One mini 2, I would like to compare amount of noise, many thanks
