[Q] Camera - Sony Xperia ZR

Does anyone feel like Nokia lumia 520 camera in low light conditions is better than Xperia ZR ??
Even though we have 13 megapixel, i somehow feel under low light XZR isnt doing that great :/

13MP
Ye i too am very disappointed with the camera..Compared to my previous 8MP Incredible S and 8MP Sensation this is by far inferior.
can only do 9MP 16:9 otherwise make do with 13MP 4:3 and images are very grainy and there is no sharpness at all. would rather have a lagging shutter with good quality images than lag free with noise. the moment you try to zoom.. that's it the whole image distorts.. for my first xperia i am disappointed and thought sony camera would be far more superior than HTC's.

The camera isn't that bad but I agree it isn't the best considering its meant to be Sony's bread and butter. Low light conditions are not as great and may require you to adjust the settings. I know the xperia t and v has better picture quality but I'm sure this could be fixed in a firmware update much like the xperia z had. If you want bad you should try the nexus 4.

If and when someone upgrades with the 4.2.2 please report what you think of the new camera/drivers

Settings
Manual settings are far better than the superior settings they gave,
How about focusing?
Any suggestions on the settings for better pictures ?

how do u or what are the so called recommended manual settings?

Manual/Automatic
I have tried various options with very slight changes. It just seems the overall quality is average at best. my sony ericsson T650 3.2megapixel camera from years back produced much better photos than this.

Yeah right! Such a troll.

Single focus...hdr on, pictures are somewhat better...check these 2 pics...first is far better than second..

Yea well..i was jus asking for tips..still the best was the setting I mentioned above..like if u zoom in these pics, first one does not have that noise as second one..i thot thats a factor to compare them..

noise depends on the ISO setting usually. a higher setting tends to cause more noise. so u cant compare 2 completely different pix unless u know for sure they were taken under the same lighting conditions, same amount of shake while pressing the camera button, etc.. the auto detection feature may sometimes detect the same situation differently. so it would be better if u take pix of the same subject in manual mode with different settings n then compare them.
also, HDR can cause noise coz it has to take 2 pix in different exposure settings. so if ur hand moves by as less as a millimeter in the time frame required by HDR, there will be a considerable amount of noise. try takin a pic of a moving subject in HDR mode n ull c what i mean

I'm on 4.2.2 and I just tried taking a few pictures indoors on superior auto and they look terrible I'm not sure if it improved from the previous firmware. It's like this camera turns itself into vga mode as soon as the sun goes down. These shots made my old galaxy s2 look like the best camera phone around. I'll just have to play with the settings and find what's best for now. Anyone got recommendations for indoor settings?
Sent from my C5503 using xda app-developers app

The camera is just not very good it seems. Funny Sony is doing many of the other flagshipcameras this year for other companies but can't het their own app upp to par...
I found that moto x camera is faster and I can't see any big differences in quality and the camera JB + with punchfilter normally gives a little more nicety. Off cource perfectly Clear (etc) from playstore does also work good
Hopefully they'll do some wonder in the next update...

Excellent in daylight!
I found the camera to be quite exceptional in daytime. The stock camera app processes the photos to increase sharpness. The details while zooming in are good in proper light.
However, the noise increases significantly in low light. The picture is fuzzy when zoomed in.
From my experience, Using the HDR mode is the only way to significantly reduce noise. The "Backlight correction + HDR" mode also works quite well.
Funny thing that the ''Night Mode" gave darker images then normal mode for me.

I just had the best camera experience for night mode shots yet.
I changed the settings to normal with auto flash on and HDR off with EV +1.
The pictures were much sharper but requires you to have a steady hand still it's much better. Got the idea off the Xperia Z forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397058

Maybe it would help....
It seems that funky camera credits goes to Exmor RS sensor which uses a "stacked structure" that layers a pixel section over a circuit section, which removes the need to confine the pixel and circuit section into a tight space that limits the size of each element. By fitting bigger components in the same area, the sensor has a more efficient design that captures a higher quality image. Higher noise too, I'd say.
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201208/12-107E/

Its the same camera as in S4 so it's most of all the driver/hardware behind the sensor that's not very good. Sony's just not very good putting stuff together. I have had a few and none is spectacular. Well see next generation of soft and updates, hopefully they'll put some effort in. To have a bit nicer photos indoor the same approach as in my S4, hdr is working ok.

So what you guys think about the ZR's camera. Is it good or not ?! I plan to buy it next few months but consider more about it first.

Depends on your budget and if U really need a wwaterproof phone I'll presume. The camera is not the best but the phone is nice.

Sony Xperia T Camera

I Just got my Xperia T and wanted to compare the image quality to my HTC One X I'm getting rid of (God awful phone by the way)
These pictures are in no way 'the best' the camera can do I'm sure and I hardly used a good subject... in fact it was just what was in the corner of my room
All pictures however were taken now (11:10pm ish) in a fairly dullish room so all had to use the flash feature.
See for yourself

^^ I had to do it like that as it wont let me post a link, so I do apologise to any forum admin I'm not doing it to break the rules.. sorry!
Excellent shoot. Xperia T's camera definitely has a greater contrast.. which is the most noticeable thing that popped out to me. The shadows were darker, etc.

It also picked up the varnish shine effect that the cabinet has where the HTC one x made it look dull. So far I'm very impressed with the Xperia t,for once I'm using the stock keyboard as its actually very good. Normally I install swiftkey but not this time.
I have both phones aswell and SXT has the far better camera and video and video sound quality too and I like the fact that the videos arent so zoomed in like on the hox, htc really need to do something about that because it is a horrible feature.
I like my HOX but seriously Tegra 3 really lets it down, phone has a tendancy to be zippy fast one minute then snail slow and laggy the next and not to mention it overheats like crazy when playing games or on the internet for even three mins which my sxt doesn't
How fast does your xperia t take shots, i came from a gs3 that was lightning quick at taking pics. I get some amazing pics with the xperia t, but sometimes it just seems sluggish at focusing if at all. Would you mind sharing detailed camera settings for everyday use so we can get the best out of the Xperia Ts Camera?
Thanks

I have the stock settings only got my phone yesterday. When I press the capture button it takes about 0.5 to 1 seconds for the picture to flash in the gallery icon in the bottom right.
I always have my camera in normal mode as opposed to auto scene mode because auto scene mode it is too slow to focus and I use touch focus instead of auto focus.

The scene selection seems to take a while. I leave mine in normal mode but let auto-focus do its thing and select a specific scene mode (landscape, sports mainly) when needed. I only use touch focus when I want to focus on a particular area of the shot I'm taking.
If I helped, hit Thanks!
I left mine in auto for everything

today my focus froze completely when trying to take a picture of some christmas lights, I had to exit the camera and go back into it before it focused and btw that time the lights went off. This is kinda the same issue i had with the xperia s but the s was worse. Please, please, please SONY just stop it. why cant the camera focus straight away like on the HOX or SGS3 for example.

Unfortunately Xperia T is not the leader in good quality pictures. I would say my T makes awful pictures!! I have it now for a few weeks and I am really really disappointed in photo quality by my new Xperia. I had Samsung Galaxy SII before but I didn't like it due to network signal problems so I sold it after a few weeks and I decided to go for Xperia T. S2 was making way better pictures than Xperia T does. I wanted to by S3 but I didn't like the week network signal in S2 and I have used Sony Ericsson for many years before so I picked Xperia T. I was very disappointed when I noticed after my first shot how noisy it was. It is hard to catch focus, many pictures are blurred. Making a shot in bright sun is fine. But as soon as You will get inside and use a lamp as a light sources even with LED light it will be hard to make a nice clear shot. I had SE Satio before and it was making much better pictures. I also compared shots in the same room and lighting with my friend's Galaxy S3 and Samsung was making much better pictures without that much noise. So If you are looking for a good camera with your smartphone Xperia T might not be the best call.

Yeah coming from a Nokia N8 I have to agree that the image quality is just not to the standard I've been used to. I got camera zoom fx app but even with uncompressed images @ 12.8mp there is far too much noise in low level lighting. There is a mod you can get that will probably give you a real uncompressed JPG but as far as taking a decent shot without any motion blur it's almost impossible..The Video capture on the other hand is good.
I may have to wait a bit before trying this mod out as need to root the phone. Personally I would prefer if Sony wouldn't handicap the camera quality as the images are re-sized for sharing online.. The phone can store 14gig plus 32 gig of expanded memory.
IMHO if you want good camera hardware in a phone go for the Nokia 808 or the 920.
Irrespective of operating system. If you want a good photo you need good hardware and I never needed to buy extra software with Symbian to get a good shot every time I used the camera on the N8.
I don't know why Sony made such a poor quality camera/pictures. I am not sure where the problem is - is it the hardware or software, but pictures out of Xperia T are barely usable. I can compare pictures to old but good Sony Ericsson C902. Compared to Galaxy S3 Samsung makes much better pictures. If camera would be better T would be the best phone. For a plus is that videos are quite decent.
And most of the tests show the opposite as well as many other users say the oppostite too.
Another thread in loop. One likes this, another one likes that.
Truth is, that the image stabiliser needs to be turned on, to make not blurry photos in low light conditions. Noise is normal on this kind of cameras. If another phone has no noise, then it's only post processing.
Btw. this camera is perfect scanner of documents, even in low light conditions. It proved to be very useful for me.

But the stabiliser is a digital stabiliser right ? Do you know how does it work for pictures ?
edit : by taking multiple picture and keeping the sharpest one a suppose
So the image stabilizer is most likely "off" with the auto setting ? Why they don't choose to keep it "on" if its better ?
I also have been surprised by how much chroma noise the pictures have.
So maybe Sony just made the choice to apply less chroma noise reduction than its competitor. (but having chroma noise at lowest iso setting feel weird for sure)

Just a prove that it's not possible to make photo without noise in low light conditions with this optics. ISO is not everything.

Not sure about the xperia t, but on my sgs3 when i turn on image stabilization all it really does is increase the iso therefore producing a faster shutter speed...which is what you want to prevent blur. The exif data of each photo shows this.

In the default app, can you change jpeg compression? it is reported to be very high
What app do people use?
Image compression - can you set the shutter button open a different app?
B
Why do some reviews show that you can change the ISO, whilst others report you cannot?
Is this option "lost" in an update, ie has Sony removed it?

It's not one of the best and neither has anyone claimed it to be the best. It takes decent quality pictures. And frankly for the price it sells it has
a pretty good performace to cost ratio. If you want bette camera's you should look at HTC One, Xperia Z which have better sensors in them.
Picture quality is mostly dependent on sensor used and not much can be done by changing couple of values here and there.
On a side note, Vic Gundotra has said they are planning something big with camera's. So lets wait and watch what they do.
Have you tried using her mode for low light

Xperia T - Grainy Photos

I've grown increasingly disappointed in the camera on this phone. 13mp photos are compressed, grainy, and look just awful up close at full zoom. Are there any workarounds to improve image quality?
Sent from my LT30p using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There's no rocket science here.
It's the same with every Xperia flagship, from X10 till Z.
It's the result of terrible post-processing handled by default Xperia camera software, which tries to artificially remove noise and then terribly compress image, to achieve as lower file size as it could. Which again, is terribly wrong, and only Sony developers know why is this like this.
In a world of huge internal storages, and generally cheap 32+GB microSD cards, they are trying to compress images to the lower limits.
On my last phone, Xperia Arc S, I partially solved this by using CameraZOOM FX app, that doesn't compress images that badly, and it produced overall better images than default Camera app, and larger in size also. It was especially noticable with macro high detailed shots, like text or similar.
But, on Xperia T, for some reason CameraZOOM is not providing 16:9 aspect ratio option, so you're stuck with standard 4:3 ratio images, which is deal-breaker for me to be honest. So unfortunately I'm stuck with default camera app till CameraZOOM devs fix this issue, or till some better camera app appears.
Attached are 3 pictures from 3 different sources. Camera zoom, Android 4.3 camera, and stock Sony. Can anyone tell the difference?

First, images you uploaded are downsampled to 1032x774 resolution, therefore unusable for any kind of comparison.
Second, if you haven't done that already, set image quality in Camera ZOOM to 100%.
Third, find some object with clean and defined lines/shapes (ever saw gsm arena photo comparison sample?), as only that way you can see difference if there is any.
And then upload those photos to imageshack in FULL resolution, and then share them here, and ask for opinion.
And even if you prove to be right (which I doubt you'll be), I never said that Camera ZOOM will surely provide better results on Xperia T too. I know it made a difference back on Xperia Arc S, and in some situations quite a huge difference.
Maybe one more thing to add is, I'm working with graphics on daily basis, so I know what I'm talking about.
Thanks for the information. I obviously don't know what I'm doing and didn't know it sampled down when attaching. I'll clean this thread up and do some more comparison on my own before posting given your helpful advice. Thanks again!

i see no difference in that three pics, upload photobucket full size maybe
my observations:
when i was on CM in past, i used camerazoom and procapture, both are nice. negative for me was the time it need for procapture to shoot+save a pic, a bit too long. but many options, also 16:9. i not installed camerazoomfx since it cannot 16:9 on sony stock here
iam quite satisfied with sony stock camera (no cybershot mod). i play around with manual settings, so i make quite good shots for daily use.
only for panorama i bought me propanorama, its simply a sexy panorama app:silly:
Ok, I did a quick comparison this morning, and unfortunately with undesired result.
Maybe the object of shooting wasn't ideal because of lack of colors, but I think it could give us general idea about comparison of stock Camera and Camera ZOOM.
So, I took a shot of tech magazine, from same angle and same distance, as much as I could, and there's no big difference to be honest.
There's no difference in file sizes, and in quality of pictures too. I remember though, that back on Xperia Arc S, Camera ZOOM provided bigger files for about 20-30%.
So here are the full resolution shots:
Camera ZOOM:
http://imageshack.us/a/img513/9871/ky.jpg
Stock Camera:
http://imageshack.us/a/img11/2116/w1lx.jpg
And this is a 100% zoom cut-out I did in Photoshop:
As you can see, there's no big difference, if any at all. If you try hard, you can see some small difference in edge sharpness, on big letters "S" and "U", but nothing spectacular. Also, on upper part of picture, you can see that letter "H" is a little bih cleaner and sharper on Camera ZOOM, but this could be due to un-ideally aligned focus on both photos, as they are not taken from 100% ideally the same angles/position.

[Q] XperiaZ1 cam noise

Hey, I finally got a Z1 couple of days back and really disappointed with the cam noise. It is in 8MP 16:9 mode and the noise is too much.It is the best low light cam I have seen in Xperia range but I havent seen such amount of noise in the ****ty chinese phones either. I updated the firmware to the latest one based on JB 4.3 before I install my apps. Even when I zoom images on the PC, they are really blurry. Will provide some samples and other info soon.
Are there any fixes that I can apply? I tried the manual mode too but that doesnt really help. Btw, this is my first 1080P screen.
Thanks.
Here are samples :

The quality of the pictures was improved a bit with the update .136. Also I saw few confirmations about improvement even on 4.4. More space in MB per JPG but less noise. It's all about software so it will be better and better gradually with the updates. Just a bit of patience.

Well, I think Sony focused on create something new, rather than improving their previous work. IDK.
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
If you don't want noise with Xperia Z1 shots, use Manual Mode and set the ISO preferrably to 50, or a little higher if the image would otherwise be too dark. At ISO-50 the images are basically noise free.
I can't mention enough how this supposedly "Superior" auto mode is far from superior. Try not to use it, unless you need a picture of something quickly or don't mind the quality.

Any other camera app better than stock one for xperia z1?

Have you guys found any other camera app better than Sony's stock one? I bought z1 few days back, but was shocked to see that when you are in full resolution mode, you can't even select some scenes. That's pathetic. Why sony has given a 21mp cam, when it only wants us to shoot in 8mp? I agree that this device is old, but shiny could change this setting in lollipop update.
Nevertheless, I tried few apps like camera zoom fx, google camera, camera fv-5 but noneof them were better than stock (with default settings). Please share your experience and tips regarding photography with Sony xperia z1.

A Better Camera app seems to apply edge detection absed noise removal, structure filter and change some parameters like gamma, contrast and brightness aswell as saturation. Several BTC photos in that video really look way off. You could pratically mimic this in Snapseed with filters and changes to stock cameras photos. However I do like in some photos how the structure and edge removal noise filter is applied. These filters are used by Samsung galaxy mobiles except on the S5 and S6 gives blurry detail but then those cameras there dont match up to the Z1+ series detail capturing. In the end a post processed photo from Z1+ series mobile will look better and give more opportunity to hit the right balance.

it dosent even have ISO and focus control
I use the app Camera FV-5. Full manual settings and the long and long+ functions are working great for me with lowlight shots. One thing I still don't like is the flash on the z1
FV-5 with "Long" mode or "Fast" mode or ProCapture which pretty much allows SA with 21MP (Night scene, Portrait scene and so on). 21MP or max capture resolution in ProCapture and selecting 16:9 aspect ratio makes it supersample the image and also increase clarity, detail and calculate higher ISO than-is-shown for exif. Final image is 15MP but it has more detail and better lit than 4:3 21MP.
