Hey all
I have been so frustrated with the camera on this phone as it takes barely passable photos in daylight but low light its almost impossible to take photos that are focusd and aren't full of noise. The HDR shot is quite good but nothing special.
Also the photos are a little zoomed in and squashed down if compared against objects you've take the pic of.
So i searched around and came across Lg camera in the market.
It has a free version which seems fully featured which bugs you for purchasing it every now and again. The aspect ratio of the pics is correct and tt takes excellent low light shots especially with flash on and has less noise and focuses perfectly.
Just thought I'd share it see what people thought.
Cheers.
Tried it. Didn't notice a difference. Tried camera zoom fx and all three took the same photo. The autofocus algorithms on this phone are horrible.

Sorry to say but its totally different pics on mine to stock camera. If you cant see the difference then maybe there's a fault on your phones because lg camera is perfect for me in low light and has no focusing issues at all even in a pitch black room with flash on.
You can also set infinity focus which eliminates all need to focus at all so for me lg camera fixes the problem
Also the aspect ratios in the photos on stock camera are totally different when compared to lg camera so maybe you need to compare the pictures side by side. Lg camera is true to the scene, Google camera squashes everything down. Also the Google camera is zoomed in further than lg camera.
My phone has no focusing issues with this app now.
Camera zoom fx isn't really a camera app more of a toy but anyway hope it helps someone as its sorted the camera form me and I'm very picky.
Ill update the thread with comparisons over the weekend to highlight the difference between the two cameras

Please do!
I tried lgCamera as well as other camera apps and saw no significant difference.
There are several aspects to the bad pictures problem.
- One is the limitations of the camera module which no app can fix.
- Then there's camera calibration. The LG Optimus 4X HD has the same camera module
but produces photos with less noise. There's room for improvement here but it is most
likely going to happen with a firmware update.
- Proper metering and scene evaluation will no doubt increase the picture quality.
Manual control is one avenue to peruse this but I haven't come across and app that
gives exclusive control over ISO and shutter speed. Some apps let you select one and
then automatically adjust the other.
Check out Camera FV-5.

because you cant see anything that means your phone must be faulty!
The camera app itself doesn't really matter.
All the actual focusing/picture taking/etc is done by the kernel module. There is a userspace driver which translate commands from the camera API (its just ends up being a string that defines parameters in plan text) and based off of that it tells the kernel module to make those changes/perform those actions. It even defines the jpg compression quality and whatnot, so there isnt much the actual app itself does.

Level of compression certainly is set by the app. My FV-5 files are twice the size at the same resolution.

The camera app *suggests* the compression it would like, it doesn't do the compression itself. The userspace module instructs the camera kernel module to do the compression, and the build in DSP in the Qualcomm chip does the actual compression.

Does anyone feel like Nokia lumia 520 camera in low light conditions is better than Xperia ZR ??
Even though we have 13 megapixel, i somehow feel under low light XZR isnt doing that great :/
13MP
Ye i too am very disappointed with the camera..Compared to my previous 8MP Incredible S and 8MP Sensation this is by far inferior.
can only do 9MP 16:9 otherwise make do with 13MP 4:3 and images are very grainy and there is no sharpness at all. would rather have a lagging shutter with good quality images than lag free with noise. the moment you try to zoom.. that's it the whole image distorts.. for my first xperia i am disappointed and thought sony camera would be far more superior than HTC's.
The camera isn't that bad but I agree it isn't the best considering its meant to be Sony's bread and butter. Low light conditions are not as great and may require you to adjust the settings. I know the xperia t and v has better picture quality but I'm sure this could be fixed in a firmware update much like the xperia z had. If you want bad you should try the nexus 4.

How about focusing?
Any suggestions on the settings for better pictures ?
how do u or what are the so called recommended manual settings?
Manual/Automatic
I have tried various options with very slight changes. It just seems the overall quality is average at best. my sony ericsson T650 3.2megapixel camera from years back produced much better photos than this.

noise depends on the ISO setting usually. a higher setting tends to cause more noise. so u cant compare 2 completely different pix unless u know for sure they were taken under the same lighting conditions, same amount of shake while pressing the camera button, etc.. the auto detection feature may sometimes detect the same situation differently. so it would be better if u take pix of the same subject in manual mode with different settings n then compare them.
also, HDR can cause noise coz it has to take 2 pix in different exposure settings. so if ur hand moves by as less as a millimeter in the time frame required by HDR, there will be a considerable amount of noise. try takin a pic of a moving subject in HDR mode n ull c what i mean
I'm on 4.2.2 and I just tried taking a few pictures indoors on superior auto and they look terrible I'm not sure if it improved from the previous firmware. It's like this camera turns itself into vga mode as soon as the sun goes down. These shots made my old galaxy s2 look like the best camera phone around. I'll just have to play with the settings and find what's best for now. Anyone got recommendations for indoor settings?

The camera is just not very good it seems. Funny Sony is doing many of the other flagshipcameras this year for other companies but can't het their own app upp to par...
I found that moto x camera is faster and I can't see any big differences in quality and the camera JB + with punchfilter normally gives a little more nicety. Off cource perfectly Clear (etc) from playstore does also work good
Hopefully they'll do some wonder in the next update...

Excellent in daylight!
I found the camera to be quite exceptional in daytime. The stock camera app processes the photos to increase sharpness. The details while zooming in are good in proper light.
However, the noise increases significantly in low light. The picture is fuzzy when zoomed in.
From my experience, Using the HDR mode is the only way to significantly reduce noise. The "Backlight correction + HDR" mode also works quite well.
Funny thing that the ''Night Mode" gave darker images then normal mode for me.
I just had the best camera experience for night mode shots yet.
I changed the settings to normal with auto flash on and HDR off with EV +1.
The pictures were much sharper but requires you to have a steady hand still it's much better. Got the idea off the Xperia Z forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397058

Maybe it would help....
It seems that funky camera credits goes to Exmor RS sensor which uses a "stacked structure" that layers a pixel section over a circuit section, which removes the need to confine the pixel and circuit section into a tight space that limits the size of each element. By fitting bigger components in the same area, the sensor has a more efficient design that captures a higher quality image. Higher noise too, I'd say.
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201208/12-107E/
Its the same camera as in S4 so it's most of all the driver/hardware behind the sensor that's not very good. Sony's just not very good putting stuff together. I have had a few and none is spectacular. Well see next generation of soft and updates, hopefully they'll put some effort in. To have a bit nicer photos indoor the same approach as in my S4, hdr is working ok.

There's no rocket science here.
It's the same with every Xperia flagship, from X10 till Z.
It's the result of terrible post-processing handled by default Xperia camera software, which tries to artificially remove noise and then terribly compress image, to achieve as lower file size as it could. Which again, is terribly wrong, and only Sony developers know why is this like this.
In a world of huge internal storages, and generally cheap 32+GB microSD cards, they are trying to compress images to the lower limits.
On my last phone, Xperia Arc S, I partially solved this by using CameraZOOM FX app, that doesn't compress images that badly, and it produced overall better images than default Camera app, and larger in size also. It was especially noticable with macro high detailed shots, like text or similar.
But, on Xperia T, for some reason CameraZOOM is not providing 16:9 aspect ratio option, so you're stuck with standard 4:3 ratio images, which is deal-breaker for me to be honest. So unfortunately I'm stuck with default camera app till CameraZOOM devs fix this issue, or till some better camera app appears.
Attached are 3 pictures from 3 different sources. Camera zoom, Android 4.3 camera, and stock Sony. Can anyone tell the difference?

First, images you uploaded are downsampled to 1032x774 resolution, therefore unusable for any kind of comparison.
Second, if you haven't done that already, set image quality in Camera ZOOM to 100%.
Third, find some object with clean and defined lines/shapes (ever saw gsm arena photo comparison sample?), as only that way you can see difference if there is any.
And then upload those photos to imageshack in FULL resolution, and then share them here, and ask for opinion.
And even if you prove to be right (which I doubt you'll be), I never said that Camera ZOOM will surely provide better results on Xperia T too. I know it made a difference back on Xperia Arc S, and in some situations quite a huge difference.
Maybe one more thing to add is, I'm working with graphics on daily basis, so I know what I'm talking about.
Thanks for the information. I obviously don't know what I'm doing and didn't know it sampled down when attaching. I'll clean this thread up and do some more comparison on my own before posting given your helpful advice. Thanks again!

i see no difference in that three pics, upload photobucket full size maybe
my observations:
when i was on CM in past, i used camerazoom and procapture, both are nice. negative for me was the time it need for procapture to shoot+save a pic, a bit too long. but many options, also 16:9. i not installed camerazoomfx since it cannot 16:9 on sony stock here
iam quite satisfied with sony stock camera (no cybershot mod). i play around with manual settings, so i make quite good shots for daily use.
only for panorama i bought me propanorama, its simply a sexy panorama app:silly:
Ok, I did a quick comparison this morning, and unfortunately with undesired result.
Maybe the object of shooting wasn't ideal because of lack of colors, but I think it could give us general idea about comparison of stock Camera and Camera ZOOM.
So, I took a shot of tech magazine, from same angle and same distance, as much as I could, and there's no big difference to be honest.
There's no difference in file sizes, and in quality of pictures too. I remember though, that back on Xperia Arc S, Camera ZOOM provided bigger files for about 20-30%.
So here are the full resolution shots:
Camera ZOOM:
http://imageshack.us/a/img513/9871/ky.jpg
Stock Camera:
http://imageshack.us/a/img11/2116/w1lx.jpg
And this is a 100% zoom cut-out I did in Photoshop:
As you can see, there's no big difference, if any at all. If you try hard, you can see some small difference in edge sharpness, on big letters "S" and "U", but nothing spectacular. Also, on upper part of picture, you can see that letter "H" is a little bih cleaner and sharper on Camera ZOOM, but this could be due to un-ideally aligned focus on both photos, as they are not taken from 100% ideally the same angles/position.

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?

Hello!
I have installed AOKP 4.3 ROM on my Xperia Z. When I need to take a fast picture, I just use auto ISO/Exposure...
When I wanna get better picture in low light, I just use a little bit tweaking In low light, when I'm taking picture of some close object, I just put ISO on 100/200 (max), use flash and that's it! When I'm taking picture a little bit further (3/4 meters), I use 200/400 ISO, and use flash if I can (very big con of our device is bad flash). When I'm doing night portrait, just put ISO on 400 and turn on HDR, photos will look awsome believe me
Tonight I could upload some pictures from my Z, just to give you some clue.
P.S. When you're using front camera, turn on HDR you will get a much better photo quality

Did you turned off 'soft tan effect'' or something like this? It helps a bit on stock ROM (Honami camera app)
I'm using AOKP ROM and I have better front camera picture quality than my friend (Galaxy S4), I just turned on HDR

I just flashed the ROM after aloooooooot of work and I currently have the PAC-MAN ROM and the picture quality is amazing. It takes pictures in JPEG automaticallly and the files aren't that big! If anyone wants to do this I can deliver some links which actually unlocks bootloader, roots and flashes ROM, looked for the right downloads for ages.
