Nexus 7, OTG and a 250GB Portable External Hard drive - Nexus 7 General

Hey guys,
I just wanted to share my excitement!!
I bought a cheap OTG cable of eBay for £1.29. I thought I'd see what it could do, and at best thought it would only work with a USB flash drive.
I downloaded the free Nexus Photo Importer and plugged in a 250GB Seagate external hard drive. The only power this unit receives in through the single USB cable.
To my shock, my Nexus 7 powers the external hard drive!!!
Straight away I bought the full app, Nexus Media Importer, and I'm able to play all the movies and music located on the drive.
I'm able to copy files from and to the external drive!!
I just think that is amazing!!!

Haha, I never knew it was possible.

Cool, I didn't expect it to power a disk drive. That'll come in handy when traveling.

I got my 320 GB WD external to work with my N7 as well. The thing is im not as successful with other drives that I tried. :|

If u can root ur device use stick mount it's free and u even will be able to use mouse and keyboard

You lucky bastards, I have 250GB Passport and that sucker needs more then 650mAh and OTG only can provide 500mAh so every thing works but not the HDD for witch i got the cable for

I've got a 120GB external drive and it can't supply enough power to power it unfortunately. The drive is a couple years old (it's a laptop drive inside an enclosure).

What would be handy would be a list of external hard drives that can be directly powered by the nexus 7.
Can anyone who has one of these drives please say what Manufacturer and exact model they have and I will try to make a list and post it in the Accessories section.

doesnt work on my N7 which is running rooted 4.2.2. :crying:

Only harddrives with external power suply will work.

2.5" drives need >1W to start and then run using around .5W so that's around 200mA and 100mA and can explain lights/ noise but no action. The current draw is within USB2 specs but I don't know what standards are met by the hybrid OTG port - I think there's requirement for a sustained 150mA in the OTG spec.

There may also be a need to format the drive to fat 32 for best compatability.

With my 1TB WD My Passport, I added a Y-cable allowing me to attach a small external USB battery pack which provides the necessary power. Now it works just fine, formatted NTFS. Here is the cable:

Hey i have same WD My passport 1 TB external drive, Can you please send me pics how did you do that as unable to get it with your post.

Anyone having an issue where they are using a 1TB drive and have 100gb of just music files and only like 20% of the artists/files show up in Google Play, PlayerPro, etc? I know the drive operates properly, receives enough power from my hub, and all of the artists/files show up under File Manager/File Explorer.
I am using StickMount, Timur Kernel, OTG charging/hosting, and have NTFS read/write set up properly.

the n7 supports OTG through root!!!

Tech site the verge has asked Asus about otg and MHL and was confirmed that jelly bean and the nexus 7 does not support it. It does however support USB host. Here is the article
http://mobile.theverge.com/2012/6/29/3127278/nexus-7-mhl-usb-otg
EDIT: thanks to RMXO we have now confirmed that OTG does work once your device is rooted. Plug in your flash drive to a USB otg cable and you can now transfer your content.
so with usb host support does that mean i could for instance plug like a game controller in using like an adapter.

According to the verge mouse and keyboard work so a game controller should work. I'm pretty sure you can buy a bluetooth game controller.
my xperia s has OTG , i know some phone dont eg one x ( out of the box ) but I cant see that being a huge stumbling block .. XDA will sort it out !!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, so this still isn't very clear. Is the lack of MHL and OTG support on the software side or hardware? The only thing that article states is that "Android 4.1 Jelly Bean" doesn't support it.
Where's an ifixit tear down when you need them?
Not really news, we know the software was made to not support it. But with root and an app, does the tablet have enough juice going to the micro usb slot? That's the question....

It can be outrageous on the pricing but if you're patient & lucky you can get it for $20-50 markup. Those are the people that I love dealing with since they aren't asking too much and willing to sell right away with no BS.

Yeap, I had to download & install "StickMount" to get my flash drives to mount.
The drive path when you mount is:
/mnt/sdcard/usbStorage/sda1, sdb1, sdc1, etc....
Nexus 7 with StickMount reads NTFS & FAT32 but not exFAT. Also I'm unable to write to NTFS either.

Yes, I have the model that was handled out at Google I/O with the White back
Following this thread like it's a championship finals, being able to mount a usb stick is what's gonna make me buy it or not.
the title of the post should be edited to say the nexus 7 doesn't do mhl and usb otg natively, seems misleading.
RMXO, you are the shizzle! this is what I've been agonizing over since news came out of no micro sd slot. 13.something gb useable is a drop in the bucket without a micro sd slot. i can live without mhl, but not with a measly 13.something gb. i paid $120 for the very first 16gb micro sd card when it first came out. if they offered a 64gb or even a 128gb nexus 7 i would have gladly paid more for it. you can never have enough memory, but can definitely have too little. i bought the 1st gen ipad 16gb wifi when it came out from a friend for $300 bc it was such a good deal, then realized how useless it was. ended up giving it to my mom to play games on it.
i can deal with reading ntfs and fat32, and writing to fat32. considered cancelling my pre-order if usb otg didn't work, or just giving it to my mom so she could skype with my sister and niece, since the 1st gen ipad doesn't have a ffc. thanks again RMXO, i am grateful, and Google owes you! lol

thx.
Waiting your OTG results.
Here are my results when trying to playing video files from a flash drive via OTG.
I sued the following three apps (MXPlayer, Dice, MOBO Player) to play AVI, MKV (720 & 1080p) with.
All three apps couldn't play the video files. Dice would FC (I used a TiBU version since Dice shows as incompatible on Play Store). With Mobo Player I couldn't get it to recognize the ARM7-neon plugin even though I downloaded & installed it. MXPlayer would give me a video problem error.
So most likely those apps are incompatible with JB & I'm able to play those video files on my S3 with Dice to verify these are not corrupted files.
Any possibility to transfer the files from the usb to the internal memory and try opening from there?

A Crazy Idea for a New OTG Way to Access Data Outside Nexus (and non-cloud)

TL;DR I have a cool, but hypothetical, idea for an alternate non-cloud way to access your data
There are many threads in which people are asking (and a few hyper-ventilating and a few ranting) about how they are to access non-cloud data on an N7 in light of the Nexus 7's lack of an SD-card reader. Just to name a few threads, there are: OTG USB cable, Questions About Specs OTG or WIFI Direct, The N7 Supports OTG Through Root, HDMI out and OTG Support and For Those Worried About Lack of Storage (USB-OTG Discussion Thread). And that's just for starters. As of this writing (which may be expired, null and void by tomorrow), the options seemed to boil down like this:
1. OTG (on-the-go) use of USB-based storage. Whether this refers to a way to read a memory card, such as an SD Card, or reading from a thumb/jump/flash drive or from an external USB HDD (hard disk drive) or external USB SSD (solid-state drive).
Concerns and Disadvantages: We don't know yet the voltage of the USB port (or the electrical current load it can sustain), but it's starting to look like maybe 3.3 volts is all she wrote. If that's true, then virtually nothing that is currently available will run off the USB port unless you put a powered USB hub between the N7 and whatever you're trying to read-write from.
I don't know how you feel about dongl'ing a powered hub (or battery-powered hub) between your N7 and your storage (whether that's an SD card in a card-reader or a thumb/jump/flash drive or whatever) , but that's a lot of stuff daisy-chained onto your tablet. Perhaps acceptable when you're at home, but it's sort of Rube Goldberg-ish to think of doing that on the road, in a plane, at a coffee shop. at work....
2. PRIVATE CLOUD. Devices such as the Seagate Satellite (500gb) and the various models (64gb, 32b, 16gb) of the Kensington Wi-Drive have an on-board server and WIFI wireless access point. The Seagate claims 7+ hours (6+ in my experience based on heavy ues) and the Kensington about 4 hours. Other than turning it on, you can leave it in your pocket, backpack, purse or attaché, and it will serve, by wifi, whatever you want.
Concerns and Disadvantages: The 500gb Seagate Satellite is about $150 (if you shop hard). The 32gb Wi-Drive is about $85 and the 64gb Wi-Drive is about $180.
The Satellite is bigger than than the Wi-Drive, but both are bigger than you probably want to haul around with you.
I might... maybe... possibly... have a better idea. But it's hypothetical for the moment.
The Satellite and Wi-Drive have on-board computers (on a chip) and WIFI hardware, but their overall size is maybe more than you want. But if you removed the drive (on the Satellite) or the flash memory (on the Wi-Drive), it would not be so big, even with the battery.
What about a device like the Satellite / Wi-Drive that just reads SD Cards instead? The Satellite and the Wi-Drive are just Linux computers-on-a-chip with a battery. They're sort of like this, I guess. Anyway, what if someone manufactured a battery-powered device whose only job was to serve up, by WIFI (and to create the WIFI environment, as needed) whatver storage appeared on a memory card, such as an SD Card?
What would you pay for something like that?
Heck, I bet that many... several... a few people on this forum could take off-the-shelf components (a Linux computer-on-a-board, WIFI circuitry and a battery, plus a card reader/writer) and make it all work -- and sell it for under $99.
Google / Amazon / Apple / Big Brother, may want us to live within a "cloud envionment" but we don't have to accept that.

Hmmm... perhaps... maybe... I'm not quite the genius that I pretend to be. But thanks, though, I'll look into the AirStash. It seems just a tad overpriced, but it (and the Wi-Drive and the Satellite) is still a solution to nearly everbody's gripe about the N7 with respect to lack of an SD Card slot.

ES File Explorer will also allow you to do this. It let's you read from LAN, FTP, BT....etc. I was just streaming a movie from my laptop to my Cappy using ES before checking in here. So I'm thinking it may be a viable option when tethering the tablet to my phone except I'll be serving the content from either my phone's internal storage or it's ext sd card.

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't the USB standard 5V? Seems to me nothing would run, including the controllers and such that are supposed to work(?), if 5V was not there. Unless it is something nasty like proprietary accessories only.
As far as current goes, I would think it would support at least a unit load of 100mA if it is standard compliant. I figured this would be enough for sticks or card readers but surprisingly I checked the units that I have and apparently the card reader wants 250 mA, the 8 and 16GB sticks want 300 mA and the tiny 32GB stick I bought last week for cheap wants the full 500 mA. No idea they were so hungry (maybe they aren't and just set high amounts anyways), that might blow my hopes of hooking up that tiny 32GB stick on the go out of the water... I wonder what the guys have have been playing with hooking up mass storage have been using.

Thanks for not calling me a dumba~~. If I'd posted the same thing on Reddit.com/r/android, within 15 minutes there would have been 20 people calling me an idiot for being unaware of the AirStash.
While XDA isn't immune to the occasional flame war or troll, the level of discourse here and the desire to help each other is really fantastic. I am so thankful for XDA.
I don't get why this is even being discussed. Either 8/16gb is enough for you or this tablet is NOT for you. If you need more storage, you either need 3/4g or an SD card slot and you need to move on. Who is going to walk around with a wifi hard drive in their pocket (not to mention keeping both charged)? Who is going to use a tablet with a hub and a hard drive attached to it? Who is going to use a tablet with a flash drive hanging out of it held in place only by a fragile little micro USB plug? All these solutions mean you'd be better off using a computer.
Either tether it with your phone, only use it at home or forget about it.

I might just because I can.
For the most part I just want a bigger screen to watch movies, browse the internet, and remotely connect to my computer and server and display the x11 using nvc, my phone is too small for it.
16 GB should be fine. I have 2TB on my server for cloud at home and on the go.
But if I could just plug in a usb to the tablet then that would be fine too.

Does the usb dongle support 64GB USB Drives, and other questions?

1.) I only hear people talking about 32gb flash drive versions, is there a reason for this?
2.) I also see that a USB sd card reader is an option. Should I get a USB flash drive or a SD card reader? Is price the only consideration there?
3.) One more question, with these cases like the rooCASE Multi-Angle and similar, do you think there will be room in the back of the case to stick the USB drive into the case so it doesn't hang out? Is this what people are doing?
Thanks!

Sorry but that is incorrect. FAT32 can support much larger than 32GB. Many external HDD's that are sold and pre-formatted are done with FAT32. The limitation you are thinking of goes back to Windows 2000 FAT32 driver which couldn't create a partition larger than 32GB but could access a partition larger than 32GB.

Accessing or sharing your personal media has never been easier. With Wi-Drive, you can add 16, 32, or 64 GB of space accessed wirelessly from your mobile device. The content can be shared by three or more people so you are no longer limited to the space available on your portable device.
i am thinking about getting one of these drives, being that i has its own battery and does wifi, i figured i can charge it in the car, charge in office/home and use it all day long when i am outside
reviews doesn't look so bad, i plan on putting only media and nothing personal on it, so security won't be an issue, thoughts?
Wow great find! I'll have to think about getting one of these! Thanks!

I use a 500GB NAS drive with XMBC - allows me to stream all my movies, music to my Nexus 7 over my home Wi-Fi.
The only good thing about this is that you can take it out, although my NAS drive still could be moved to different houses.
Thanks to your review just ordered 1 but I made sure I use my Amex instead of gift card balance for double warranty
Edit @jdavet
Got the 32GB version - works great!
Good to hear. Let me know how it works out for you.

I just picked up a Pogoplug basic for $30 once all said and done. Since I already have a few external HD this was a good option for me. I signed up for one year of Pogoplug family, and get the device for free. Not exactly the same product, but might be worth checking out for someone.:good:
Root your 7 and use StickMount and OTG Mini USB cable to mount a USB Flash Drive. I got a Kingston 64GB USB 3.0 drive for $75. I got USB 3.0 to speed up transfers from my computer to the USB drive...obviously usb 3.0 doesn't do anything for the 7 (but it is backward compatible). Currently the only downside is you have to reboot after you unplug it in order for it to recognize it again.
Mini USB OTG cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
The Kingston Drive: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-DTE30-64GB/dp/B007PRHNJ2/
And you can find StickMount on the Play store.
Of course, this only works for one Nexus 7...so if you need more than one person to access the drive...the OP's suggestion is better.

The OP's suggestion also doesn't leave a flash drive hanging off the bottom of the tablet.

I picked up the 16GB on Amazon for $39 (now it's $49). I like to go camping and drive long distances, the size should be good enough for media to keep me and or the kids happy without tethering and risking using insane amounts of data.
If only I can access the files and folders DIRECTLY (AFP, SMB, etc) without the Seagate app, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
I've played with the WiDrive and it work pretty good. It was the 32gb version. They now make a 128gb version.
I wish they had a version that allowed you to insert an sdcards into it.

Can't be formatted into NTFS. It's stuck in fat32. Fail
I mentioned it in a similar thread to this as well, but I have gone ahead and ordered one since then. Look up the Patriot Gauntlet Node if you already have some loose 2.5in HDDs or SSDs sitting around. A tiny bit more expensive considering that it does not come with a drive...but worth it if you understand its flexibility.
Found it for $100 on amazon and I have a nice 320gb Toshiba that I took out of my laptop recently to start using with it. I will probably upgrade to a 256gb SSD once they drop below $150.

OTG USB Storage Works natively

So I was experimenting this evening and found that the M8 can't utilize my Meenova card reader (therefore, I wonder whether it will work with the equivalent Leaf product I saw announced recently).
However, when I pulled my USB OTG cable out, it read a USB drive just fine. That's a pleasant surprise, especially because it apparently does not require the Nexus Media importer (like my Nexus 7 FHD does) to access files on an external USB device.
I would assume, and I haven't tried this yet, that it would also read a hard drive (provided it was powered externally).
How was the SD card in the meenova formatted?

FAT32. It was a Sandisk 64g that used to run inside my Rezound and had worked with my Nexus 7 FHD via the Meenova previously.
Well I think it is because the M8 already have a SD slot and it can't adress the second.
Mine sees my meenova just fine with a sandisk 64, the red and gray ultra formatted FAT32. Try pulling the thing out slightly to where the hooks keep it from falling out and wait awhile, the first time it took a long time to mount but once it does it works fine afterwards.
It doesn't matter if a device has an external SD card, those are mounted as sdcard1 and so forth, OTG devices get mounted as usbdisk1 and on.
Lemme clarify that the phone can READ files from the meenova but can not write without modifying permissions.xml to reverse the 4.4 external media write protection.
that wouldn't have anything to do, I have no problems on my S3/S4 doing that
Unfortunately, I think it is the Meenova that is incompatible with the m8. I have an AT&T-branded m8, stock, and when the Meenova is plugged in, Android is cycles back and forth between mounting and unmounting it.
I take the microSD out of the Meenova and plug it into a USB reader in a USB-OTG cable and the m8 mounts it just fine.
I'm going to contact Meenova and see if they have any ideas.
I have both the Meenova and an OTG cable. I have tried multiple cards that work in my PC and tablet. None will mount on my M8. It just keeps flashing "Safe to Remove" and "Device Removed Unexpectedly" over and over.
Mine did the same thing of mounting/umounting also, until i pulled on it slightly because i thought the contacts were not making a proper connection. Pulled it slightly back to where the hooks caught it and it worked ok after. Probably not a great solution but just reporting that it does work with my meenova.

Same here.
ps3 pad now works using ElementalX kernel, hopefully he will add otg support
Just looked on the meenova site and they explicitly point out that HTC One M8 (2014) is not supported. It would have been nice to get an idea if they plan to fix this or produce a new model that will support our phones For the time being I am using a USB OTG cable to connect to a Kingston USB3, it works but is bulky an inconvenient.
Really need the meenova to work so I can get around the no writing to ext sdcard from Kit Kat 4.4.
I got myself one of these, works flawlessly!!!
i have this:

Ohhh thanx for that, I looked a few months back and could not find it, so got the Team M141. Have saved linked and will get one when I need it
Are you serious guys? Meenova doesn't work on your m8? Mine works fine. I tested it with a data transfer from meenova to internal sd card (2 gb file) worked good. Only thing is i can't use the meenova and headphone at the same time. Not enough space to put the headphone plug in with meenova inserted.
I can chime in and say that i found some old cables for hooking up internal drives yesterday. Hooked up a 2TB hitachi drive, worked like a charm.
Streaming from drive to chromecast didn't pose any problems either.
