Yippie! After I managed to create a true dual boot kernel, now I am finally able to unpack the ramdisk from a zImage to modify it (add custom recovery to it etc.) and repack it back! So there you have it lazing Safe Stock Kernels (or B Safe Stock Kernels for short)!
Features:
- Pure stock kernel! (yup, straight from Samsung, only the ramdisk is modified and nothing else)
- Can be flashed through stock recovery
- CWM 6.0.3.2, TWRP 2.5 or Philz 5.08.5
- Both recoveries modified to support preload partition
- Init.d support
- Custom bootanimation support
- Custom boot sound support
FAQ:
1. What do you mean by a "safe" kernel?
- Since I only modified the ramdisk of the kernel, the kernel part is left intact, so it's all Samsung's settings! And Samsung should know best about the device (they made the phone anyway...or not? )! So things just work out of the box (exFAT support, SOD free (maybe? Lol) etc etc)...
2. How do you set custom bootanimation?
- Just place a bootanimtion.zip in /system/media
- To restore original bootanimation, just delete the bootanimtion.zip in /system/media
3. How do you set custom boot sounds?
- Just place PowerOn.ogg in /system/media
- To mute, create an empty file named "mute" in /system/media
- To unmute, create an empty file named "unmute" in /system/media
- To restore original boot sound, create an empty file named "ori_sound" in /system/media
4. Why is there a weird kernel version in Settings->About device?
- In custom kernels, the kernels are compiled with the verison name coded into it (e.g. -blazing-v10) and the second line shows who compiled it (e.g. ryuinferno @ Acer-Aspire-v3-571G)...since the kernel is pure stock, the version and compiler's name is set by Samsung...
5. I would like to have the kernel of the xxx firmware repacked, what should I do?
- Well, just tell me the Android verison and firmware version and upload the zImage here...I will do my magic then...just that simple...
6. I wanz OC, UV, everything else in custom kernalz in tis kernalz!!!!!
- It is just a stock kernel (yes, straight from Samsung, I just modified the ramdisk), so do not be silly and request stuff like OC, UV, fast charge etc etc which is impossible...
Instructions:
Flash via stock or custom recovery:
1. Choose your recovery type: CWM6 or TWRP.
2. Download the corresponding zip package.
3. Place in sdcard (external sdcard for those running stock recovery)
4. Flash the zip.
5. Reboot.

Do the ICS kernels have BRICK bug? I am very conscious about that...because my device has this bug

Can't say for sure as Chenglu didn't mention...but it's patched in custom ICS kernels...JB kernels are safe for sure (MMC_CAP_ERASE not present in source code)...
EDIT: Removed ICS kernels until I find a way to patch it... thanks to @Fsu0413 for reminding...

Owh man, no one likes a stock repacked kernel? I thought that there were many people asking for XXLSR/DDLS3 kernels with custom recovery...now you have it (took me tons of time)...but the feedback seems low on this (even the download count is low...lol)...or maybe you guys need more explaination on how this works?

*shrugs*...well try another version...I am sure that a ramdisk edit won't affect the kernel...what you get is the original kernel by Samsung...

[Q] Complete Newbie - advice required

All,
I've been using the official Samsung / Vodafone UK version of 2.3.6 (I believe XXJW4) for a while now (updated via Kies) - and slowly but surely my phone seems to be dying a slow death (incredibly laggy...literally sometimes taking up to 30 seconds to respond and apps not working at all).
I've come to the point where I need to do something about it...
I've read lots of threads about flashing kernels, roms, etc...but I think I've read far too many and confused myself !
I've chosen the ROM I want to try (SlimICS) and have downloaded the 2 recommended files. I have also downloaded Odin and a CM9 (nightly) ROM. I'm really not sure where to go from here.
I know I need to root the device..but my understanding is I need to choose a relevant Kernel to root with...and I'm not sure what I should be choosing ?
Once I'm rooted I believe I need to install the CM9 ROM before then installing the SlimICS Rom and then the essentials addon. My issues is that I'm a bit stuck at the first point (flashing the kernel).
I'd very much appreciate some advice on this...I know there's lots of info out there - but I think I've just read too many different threads and got in a bit of a muddle !
Thanks in advance !
Hi man!
Yes,you have to flash an other kernel which allows you to install custom roms via recovery.
I advice you to flash CF-ROOT 4.4 via Odin putting your phone in download mode, connecting it to PC(vol down+home+power when your phone is off),select only the PDA folder where you put the .tar file of the kernel.
After that, put the .zip file of the rom you want to install on your sd-card,go to recovery mode(vol up+home+power when your phone is off),select with the volume selectors "wipe data/factory reset","wipe cache","advanced-->wipe dalvik cache" and "install zip from sdcard"
Good luck!
P.S: this is the kernel(extract the .tar file from the zip)http://download.chainfire.eu/155/CF-Root/SGS/CF-Root-XX_OXA_JW4-v4.4-CWM3RFS.zip
P.S2: if Odin doesn't find your GS,install these driver---->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929

Thanks for your reply...i will give that a go later.
Out of interest do the custom ROMs generally have alternative kernels as part of them or do people flash a different kernel once they have put a new rom on?
I presume the kernel you have recommeneded is a stock kernel but rooted? Does this work ok with ICS roms or will I be best flashing a different kernel once I have ICS up and running?
Thanks again!
I've also been wondering about this...

Yes,it's a stock kernel with root permissions and it's ONLY for Samsung firmwares..
There are different kernels for ICS rom that doesn't work on GB
Usually a custom rom has a modded kernel but you can flash an other one created for that Android version.

[Q] Help me out!! flashing custom ROM

Im currently on a rooted stock ICS (DDLPA) with speedmod kernel k3-3, and im a newbee to flashing a custom rom:fingers-crossed:, just want to know how to flash a custom rom that is safe from bricking in simple steps, and i want to know which rom is best also with some stock holo theme flavors on it?? please members help me out:crying::crying:
What custom rom do you want to install? Read its first page and you should get instruction on how to install it.
PS : consider using the "search" button
First of all, please do flash custom ROM. You lose so much using Samsung's bloated firmware... If you're after Holo Theme, you're after AOSP based ROMs. The best options in my opinion are:
- CM9 if you want fast, clean and smooth rom.
- AOKP if you want rich options etc.
- Paranoid if you'd like to use Tablet/Hybrid UI.
How to flash ? Look any of those ROMs up and follow instructions. Usually what you have to do is:
- Root and install CWM via automated Zergrush script, so it's really a one-click operation.
- Flash a .zip in recovery
- Do a wipe ( if on safe kernel )
- Reboot and enjoy
It's not difficult, simply follow the instructions in ROMs thread, and if you need any help - just ask.
Just use titanium backup to remove unwanted apps. There is a list in the themes section on which apps is safe to remove.
Alba rom is stock and runs fast on speedmod k3-3. Again, you can remove whatever app you wish to.
There is a script on themes section to automatically remove all the bloatware.
Keep on reading.

You can surely flash Rocket Rom V7 from Sepedmod kernel coz its a safe kernel...Boot in Recovery....Do a full wipe (Data,Cache,Dalvik) den flash the RRV7 zip...Nd you're done....You might lose root....So after a reboot flash the attached CWM SuperSU zip without any wipe.....ND REMEMBER NEVER WIPE ON ROCKET ROM WITHOUT FLASHING A SAFE KERNEL AGAIN....coz RRom installs CFRoot kernel which is not that safe....so its better to flash a kernel like franco or speedmod after flashing the rom....nd also before flashing a custom kernel use the jBroid cleaning script attached....just flash it before flashing the kernel....(Press THANKS if helped)

Its written Abyssnote kernel bcoz earlier that was the only custom kernel considered safe....but now with the kernel source code being released Speedmod and Franco Kernels have MMC_CAP_ERASE removed which triggerred the brick bug...therefore its safe to wipe from these kernels....Just follow the steps I mentioned....and if u wanna use abyss kernel (i.e. method b2) then okay....but you are just wasting ur time....Coz speedmod is SAFE....(press THANKS if helped)

Good to hear that....
:cryingooo,, gotta problem, everything seems fine, but after sometimes my note is freezing and restarting, is it because of the kernel which i use? waiting for your solution:fingers-crossed:
its possible, some users have mixed reviews about franco's kernel, try an alternative like speedmod.
did you do a full wipe before changing roms ?
you cooled me down azzledazzle!! just now flashed speedmod kernel and yet to see any reboots,:good: and one more noob question, apart from custom rom, what else can i do to my note to get the best out of it? some points can be helpfull
what cant you do ??
you can tweak the **** out of it, install a load of init.d scripts, theme it, add a ton of mods. just keep scanning the themes and app section for new mods

[PRO][KERNEL] Riyal-based kernel with better touchscreen precision & SE logo

Hi, this is my first kernel, this based on the latest Ultima ICS kernel from riyal, with two minor tweaks
-now touchscreen reponse while swiping is 4px instead of 9px, so no more bumpy movements while draging items
-official "Sony Ericsson" boot logo
Information about the touchscreen problem (if you have not noticed it):
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/40474
the problem is present in latest FXP (but probably not in next's) and also in stock kernel ICS
The solutions was 99% done by nicklas lof, here:
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/22164/
Works in Stock ICS, 431 and 587, it should work with FXP releases too
Installation:
Flash kernel using fastboot
Flash original Riyal wifi Modules using CWM
Riyals kernel thread is here
I do not deserve any credits on this, I just moved a line in code to compile and changed logo. :good:
What is Stock ICS 538? or you mean 587
the recovery are same or did u update it too ?
I have to install the img with fastboot ... And I have everything right???
Thanks for this kernel. will give it try one of these days

So just to clarify. Everything is the same as Ultima ICS Kernel v1.4 with the changes you made for the touchscreen precision and SE-X logo. The WiFi modules to flash are also of the v1.4 too right?

You are right, this is based in Ultima ICS v1.4, in fact Riyal already has this in his sourcecode, so next's versión should already have this fix, you have to use v1.4 modules

This is based on latest riyal changes, I think it has voltages messed up, so I will have to build it from stock kernel someday. I dont know how to add recovery to it.
I am, but not exactly when disconnecting the charger, only when its charging and very randomly, I think the source I am using has a messed up voltage table, I need to find the original voltage tables to fix it.

OK - after reading more it sounds like there has been some structural change to the driver model (something that needs fixed at a deeper level). Anyway, it would be great if you could additionally provide us with a ROM set at 2px just so we can see for ourselves.
Ext4
Does this kernel support the Ext4 partition? Great kernel by the way...
Edit : and.... Swap partition?
Even better than that, I notice that the Touch Move app has a "tune" mode which allows the user to tune the sensitivity themself. It's currently only compatible with a couple of GSII custom kernels:
http://tegrak2x.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/touch-move-tune-compatible-kernels.html?m=1
It would be interesting to see if we could get Touch Move Tune working on Xperia devices too.

flashing kernel (Pacman rom)

Hi there,
i got currently on my 4x: pac man rom so cwm, root, bootloader unlocked...
now i want a new kernel, so is the pac man rom compatible with an other kernel? and if, which ones are best and stable for my device and pacman rom?
And last how will I install them (most kernels i found got intruductions)..?
if i fogot some information ask
Thx
Try it out. PAC is based on three different ROMs so I don't know exactly if cm based kernels work but I would try werewolf.
You can install the kernel through cwm flash if there's a flashable zip like in the werewolfJB thread
But don't forget to make a full backup ,
just in case

Hey noobiei5,
werewolf kernel seems to work with pacman rom (at least for me )
You find a link to a flashable .zip in the 3rd post in the kernel thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256899 ). Make sure you choose the CM-Kernel and flash it via CWM.
If mobile data doesn't work a full wipe in CWM might help

Trying to flash Lean Kernel w/o success

Hello people. I have a I9305XXUEMK1 and i had a problem trying to flash
Yank555.lu-SGS3-JB-kernel-v3.3-aroma-I9305_by_ausdim.zip
I did a backup using twrp recovery, wiped cache etc, and flashed the kernel,it said ok,and when i rebooted all o got was a black screen.Any suggestions? The reason i wanted to flash a custom kernel was to overclock CPU

I had that problem too, the only way i could get out was to reflash my ROM and directly after that the custom kernel (and the G-apps)

this kernel is not updated for a while now and may have been incompatible with latest firmwares. you might want to check another kernel like this one here JB boeffla kernel 5.3 beta7, fresh and recently updated if you gonna use this, you will need to download boeffla config v2 app also for overclocking or undervolting options
of course you could also try another custom rom/custom stock rom who has a kernel that supports OC and UV by default (kerneltweaker)
just look in the development thread for those kind of roms

No not necessarily, but if you want to donate you are free to do so. Here you can download the latest B.config v2 app.
Note: be careful, dont flash Samsung stock based kernel on AOSP based roms, and dont flash AOSP based kernels on Samsung stock based roms
Can you guide me through the installation? Cause i do the wipe and i install the kernel and the boeffla app..
